You didn't have to mess with the timing chain? 1997 Dodge Dakota 5.2 should be the same?

No you don't even have to brake the timing cover off, unless you plan on changing the chain too, the chain only turns the camshaft Wich pushes the pushrods for the valves, so you only have take the pushrods out.
Yes the 1997 should be the same
