History lessons? FUN?! Actually, yeah, especially when you can pretend to be visiting from the future and ride around on horsies! Here are a few ways Discovery Tour makes learning that little bit more fun (and be a pretty cool tool for the History teachers out there).
I'm looking to work at Ubisoft Montreal one day. But now I'd rather become a history teacher so I could sit and play Assassin's creed in front of the kids. Everybody wins!
It's a wonderful idea, but sadly one that won't reach most children. Most primary schools that teach the Ancient Egypt topic will be able to afford to upgrade their school PCs every five to ten years, and that is when budgets are actually honoured. This will go the way of Minecraft Education and robotic Lego - you see them at BETT fairs and piled up in free school computing rooms, and if it costs more than £0 you never, ever see them again.
I really hope this type of developer behavior doesn't go away, games are by far the most flexible median of entertainment and with a large company like Ubisoft making something like this, really springs hope that more developers will teach the world through their creative genius.
When Ellen says "It's a step up from stomping around in your bedroom while wearing a bedsheet toga, ordering imaginary gladiators to be put to death", you know it's way too precise to not have happened IRL (Don't worry, you're certainly not the only one)
At first I wasn't sure about getting this, but I became really interested when you mentioned that you can actually take part in the activities instead of having to just watch them. Also, seeing this video makes me want a game like this based in the world of Horrible Histories.
This is the next step in education in schools, roaming a massive interactive world full of history lessons presented in an entertaining fashion...no more listening to teachers give long winded lectures on history and no more watching slow paced videos on a set lesson list.
So cool image AC remasters getting this mode. Renaissance Italy and Victorian London. Even future game like Feudal japan. Sign me up. Well played Ubisoft well played.
The idea to break the Tours up into 70+ separate pieces is *Genius* I would love some Oxtra / OxBox episodes featuring the tours. We can all learn about Julius Caesar & ancient basket weaving
I won't be playing it but my grandpa who is a huge ancient history buff has been waiting for this since the base game came out... So im kind of glad the controls are simplified for him.
The Discovery Tour (and the pyramids quest) was actually the Main reason why I got the Game for 100€ instead of waiting for it to drop to 20€, it just sounded so very fascinating to me. I‘m not regretting it
As a Classics Major I find this addition immensely satisfying and helpful. I’ve already used past Assassins Creed games to make more detailed observations of art and statuary in situ.
I just started the Discovery tour (at long last), and this was super helpful! Especially the bit about interacting with the world; I don't think I would have ever noticed those white circles if it hadn't been for this video. Thanks, guys!
This is actually amazing. Very few things lately make me exited to live in the time we do, but having the capability to wander around a painstakingly crafted virtual render of another time complete with interactive and narrative history lessons is absolutely incredible
Honestly AC originally got me into history and I still love history. Frankly if they used some of AC in history classes, students would probably be more receptive to learning. Even just images, a few cut scenes or the tours like this would’ve made some of my classmates who struggled with history have a more fun and easier for them. But you know schools, always refusing to get innovative to help their students- well at least in the southern part of USA.
This is SO cool.... As a kid I dreamed of becoming an archeologist... This just sparked that interest all over again. Can't wait to try it out. (yeah...nerdy, I know.)
Now I want a discovery tour mode in all the games, even in fictional universes! Skyrim, The Witcher, Breath of the Wild... so you can add flavour to your History classes with fictional facts! "And then, Alexander the Great rode upon his mighty griffin." So cool, amarite?
Playing origins, it actually shows. Like when you enter alexandria and you have a fues with the friend that abandoned the egyption ways to prais the greek gods.
How is that a question, of course its fun. Learning about history, especially about other cultures, is always extremely fun! It also has the added bonus you'll always have random, and questionably "fun", facts...
We need an AC game set in ancient Greece or Rome, Alexandria gives us a little taste of what it would look like. On an unrelated note, Feudal Japan...please Ubisoft...please!
I remember when they tried implementing ''learning'' on pc into my primary school. I don't remember the ''educational game'' but when the teacher left the room we'd put in ''G-Police'' in and fail miserably at that instead of our education. An idea like AC: Origins discovery mode could be great for kids gaining interest in not just history but other subjects too. Interactive learning soaks in so much better. I've learned so much about the cyberpunk world of G-Police!
I remember calling on things I learned in "Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego" all the way into high school, particularly that case with Hatshepsut. I'm jealous of the kids of today getting to say, "I learned about that playing Assassin's Creed!" whereas I kept my childhood sneakily-educational gaming to myself. 😂
I have become interested in all the historical installments of Assassin's Creed. Some kind person has given us a play through in game of the Acropolis in the time of classical Greece. However, Ubisoft might have twigged people like me have no interest in the game, hence the walking tour of Egypt. The amazing thing is, I have visited many of these sites in person, but the tours put that experience into context. This time-travelling option would even be a good user case scenario for a VR headset, something I've never previously felt the need for.
lol i love how william sits and contemplates for a few seconds at 8:38......"hmm, shall i take this hammer out of my ass here or not? is there anyone else around to witness it?" XD
Okay but is cat-petting one of the interactive options? ;) Seriously though this looks amazing. The more you and Oxbox talk about Origins the more I want to try it out one day.
7:40 I've heard Reda is one of the kids. Khemu is an obvious choice. That leaves Shadya and I guess Kawab. Or one of the children in that hyena den-tomb in Siwa. But most likely Kawab.
As an archaeologist (mainly working with prehistoric Scotland/Britain) I feel terrible saying I have little interest in ancient Egypt as it's really common for this to have inspired others. However Origins has been great fun to play and I'll certainly be getting involved with the tours, the game actually took me much longer to complete than usual because I was enjoying all the amazing archaeology on offer.
Damn, this looks so much better than I thought it would be, I thought it would be text or something like that. I think i'll use it to teach my son about Ancient Egypt.
3:54 I see that scholar is metaphorically knee deep in the existential and thought-provoking readings of...table cloth? Ah yes, often has the great Alexandria pondered upon the deep interwoven intricacies of that which confounds all of mankind to this day: clothy...table ornaments.
8:05 honestly, the only flaw I see in Discovery Mode being a teaching tool is that Assassins Creed Origins is rated M for Mature here in America and 18 in Europe, which makes Discovery Mode have to jump through some hoops to get to the audience it should get to: children
Oxus The Otaku honestly, if I finished college and got a teaching degree I would probably use discovery mode as a teaching tool (both legitimate teaching and an excuse to get paid to play Xbox)
this discovery tour being a thing makes me excited especially since it's gonna be all about ancient egypt, which is the single most fascinating thing to me
Well, my inner history nerd is freaking the hell out. I'd like for more games to do this... or just have a more diverse set of locations. Like Ancient Maya. Anyone else see they found, using Lidar, that we've been grossly underestimating the size of the Mayan Civilization? Seriously, they're saying the Mayans were closer to societies like the Ancient Greeks and Chinese. That's, I mean, that's just Freaky Deaky.
My kids are going to love this. They mainly stick to Lego games but this will be a great bit of fun for them. Doubt they'll stick to the tours though 😋
Its fun because you wouldn expect it to be, you go in with extremely low expectations increasing the chance of you being pleasantly surprised. Rockstar even takes it one step further and uses these small gameplay elements/features for marketing, like for GTAV they released an entire trailer all about relatively small side-activities, and im sure they will do the same for RDR2 (hunting, farming, mining etc.) as long if its something completely separate from what the game is about, chances are high we will like it because we consider it a high quality side activity or a cherry on top if you will..
sounds cool, kind of different. reminds me of a more interactive version of the galaxapedia in Mass Effect where it had a history of all the different aliens in the game world
You can go inside....the library...of Alexandria!? Now I'm definitely buying this game! (Crying inside over the destruction of the great library of Alexandria. RIP Hypatia)
History lessons? FUN?! Actually, yeah, especially when you can pretend to be visiting from the future and ride around on horsies! Here are a few ways Discovery Tour makes learning that little bit more fun (and be a pretty cool tool for the History teachers out there).
Is this coming to console as well or just PC?
I'm looking to work at Ubisoft Montreal one day. But now I'd rather become a history teacher so I could sit and play Assassin's creed in front of the kids. Everybody wins!
It's a wonderful idea, but sadly one that won't reach most children. This will go the way of Minecraft Education and robotic Lego - you see them at BETT fairs and piled up in free school computing rooms, and if it costs more than £0 you never, ever see them again.
More like be a part of history as opposed to just murder it and rewrite history
Dom Morgan yes
7:06 so Layla gets to be Lara Croft if Lara Croft did some actual archaeology
The most important question is "can you still pet the cats?"
cold fusion You can, I checked.
Alex O'Connor WAIT HOW??
@@yaraaref8984 Just crouch near them and wait.
Yup
I really hope this type of developer behavior doesn't go away, games are by far the most flexible median of entertainment and with a large company like Ubisoft making something like this, really springs hope that more developers will teach the world through their creative genius.
I had dreams like this game when I was a kid. That’s just awesome.
I am right there with you!
enkarta was there...
same
In my case when I was a kid, it wasn't a dream. It happened. Its name was Encarta lol
@@domenica3639 I forgot about Encarta! Boy that's been a lot a years ago. That was a few years past 'kid' for me though.
NEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRDDDDSSSSS!
Ahem.
**Goes back to writing his thesis**
Ha Ha you have to write a... oh right, I still haven't finished mine...
Lol nerds have to write for school. I bet you go there to learn stuff! hah! *throws football around and trips*
Dom Locke I feel your pain, my brother.
ashtherion retards goes back to setting his hair on fire again
When Ellen says "It's a step up from stomping around in your bedroom while wearing a bedsheet toga, ordering imaginary gladiators to be put to death", you know it's way too precise to not have happened IRL (Don't worry, you're certainly not the only one)
*quietly puts away my toga from when I was little and pretended I was a king and told my siblings/cousins what to do*
At first I wasn't sure about getting this, but I became really interested when you mentioned that you can actually take part in the activities instead of having to just watch them. Also, seeing this video makes me want a game like this based in the world of Horrible Histories.
By Terry Deary or the TV people? Or indeed both.
TheHutchy01 Either one, not fussed tbh. It must have a stupid deaths segment though.
They're funny coz they're true!
Frodo Baggins That segment formed the basis of my sense of humour that lasts to this day.
Outside Xtra Hope next time it's not you!
This is the next step in education in schools, roaming a massive interactive world full of history lessons presented in an entertaining fashion...no more listening to teachers give long winded lectures on history and no more watching slow paced videos on a set lesson list.
Now make it VR and boom. Basically a holodeck.
Cobra, you don’t have any control in video teaching.
So cool image AC remasters getting this mode. Renaissance Italy and Victorian London. Even future game like Feudal japan. Sign me up. Well played Ubisoft well played.
Or the AC games that takes place in the new world locations (the Americas, Caribbean, etc)
The Great Courses meets video games. Without that one professor that kept saying my man Ramses.
you could use this as a substitute: ruclips.net/video/DGiRRTi_hJk/видео.html
I am TOTALLY getting this. This is too cool! Now i can cross going to Egypt off my bucket list!
The idea to break the Tours up into 70+ separate pieces is *Genius*
I would love some Oxtra / OxBox episodes featuring the tours. We can all learn about Julius Caesar & ancient basket weaving
I won't be playing it but my grandpa who is a huge ancient history buff has been waiting for this since the base game came out... So im kind of glad the controls are simplified for him.
Learning? Fun?? That's freaky deaky
Freaky deaky? Really? That's hardly period appropriate language. *cough cough* Oh, I feel terribly ill all of a sudden.
Sounds like an ol' case of dancing fever to me.
That's pretty amazing! I hope more games in the future have this feature. It really could be an excellent tool for teachers!
I support this notion. ;D
WOW!! I'm 74 and am absolutely astonished by this!!!! Thanks. I shall look into it.
Wait, wait, wait...why did the British Museum never mention Egyptians' issues with pots clipping through one another?
As an art history buff, I'm fangirling harder over these virtual tours than Ellen over Piglington in the last Show of the Weekend 😍
Well, you say there are no repercussions, but I stepped om a butterfly and now there's only two members of Outside Xtra. Poor Sam.
This looks like a great use for a painstakingly created historical environment.
This is the best game of 2017, i'm telling you...
what a terrible argument to compare 2 good games
If only Ellen and Luke could make a guide like this for london
I just started the Discovery tour (at long last), and this was super helpful! Especially the bit about interacting with the world; I don't think I would have ever noticed those white circles if it hadn't been for this video. Thanks, guys!
Time travel? Psshhh. I have had that down since day one.
Forward, at a rate of one hour per hour.
That’s nothing, I’m forward at a rate of *one whole day* per day!
"The voice you're hearing is Richard Kiley. Spared no expense!"
This is actually amazing. Very few things lately make me exited to live in the time we do, but having the capability to wander around a painstakingly crafted virtual render of another time complete with interactive and narrative history lessons is absolutely incredible
Geez....all we got was Oregon Trail and WE LIKED IT
Honestly AC originally got me into history and I still love history. Frankly if they used some of AC in history classes, students would probably be more receptive to learning. Mr. NoBody same man!!! Same!!!
Shannon Purgett I'm glad to see I'm not the only one.
A mode like this would be amazing in Kingdom Come: Deliverance!
Now I want a discovery tour mode in all the games, even in fictional universes! Skyrim, The Witcher, Breath of the Wild... so you can add flavour to your History classes with fictional facts!
"And then, Alexander the Great rode upon his mighty griffin." So cool, amarite?
The bizzare thing is, Ptolemyc dynasty is more Greek than Egypt.
Mulawarman yeah but u know how hard would it be to make a game of 1300 bc. Plus this is the end of the ancient Egypt
only in the North..
Playing origins, it actually shows. Like when you enter alexandria and you have a fues with the friend that abandoned the egyption ways to prais the greek gods.
Egypt was just like that, historically. One of the older Egyptian dynasties was Nubian.
Finally, a game that allows me to use 'cough* play with' a kiln without fear of somehow setting myself on fire.
How is that a question, of course its fun. Learning about history, especially about other cultures, is always extremely fun! It also has the added bonus you'll always have random, and questionably "fun", facts...
Coolest idea for DLC that I've seen in a while. :)
Absolutely amazing overview of the discovery tour Ellen. I finished the game and DLC completely, can't wait for this update next week!
I actually very much enjoy learning about Egypt and learning about this. I might have to get this just for the tours! Thanks for the heads up!
It'd be awesome if they went back and did this for Syndicate, Unity, Black Flag etc. Probably not gonna happen but we can dream :)
So - you can still interact with cats? ;-)
We need an AC game set in ancient Greece or Rome, Alexandria gives us a little taste of what it would look like. On an unrelated note, Feudal Japan...please Ubisoft...please!
Here is a nice idea for a featured list of games for Virtual Tourism. My personal pick is the replication of Kabukicho, Tokyo in the Yakuza series.
I remember when they tried implementing ''learning'' on pc into my primary school. I don't remember the ''educational game'' but when the teacher left the room we'd put in ''G-Police'' in and fail miserably at that instead of our education.

I literally have not heard a Cleopatra (comin' atcha) reference since...2000... Thanks for that!
Ellen: There's no enemies for you to worry about. *clip of her trying to start something with a random guy xD
Why didn’t this exist 15 years ago when I had to do a school project on the pyramids?
This has been a dream of mine since reading Magic Treehouse as a child. Looks super cool
the amount of effort put into this game is just amazing
I have become interested in all the historical installments of Assassin's Creed. Some kind person has given us a play through in game of the Acropolis in the time of classical Greece. Ellen, you’ve cracked it! It wasn’t aliens that built the pyramids, it was actually William Miles!
Will definitely be trying this when its out on the 20th.
Thanks for another great vid Ellen
This is amazing! I had no idea it did this!! I'm a history major and I will totally buy this for just those tours!!!
You can buy it alone? I AM SO IN! This looks so fun, been excited about this mode as soon as I heard about it.
"How about an open-top horse tour. Oh know that sounds horrible!" I died!
lol i love how william sits and contemplates for a few seconds at 8:38......"hmm, shall i take this hammer out of my ass here or not? is there anyone else around to witness it?" XD
As an archaeology student this makes me cry happy tears!!😊
Okay but is cat-petting one of the interactive options? ;)
Seriously though this looks amazing. The more you and Oxbox talk about Origins the more I want to try it out one day.
It is crazy how much better Origins and Odyssey look than Valhalla... despite being PS4 games >.
As someone who loves history anyway, this just sold me on this game
7:40 I've heard Reda is one of the kids. Khemu is an obvious choice. That leaves Shadya and I guess Kawab. Or one of the children in that hyena den-tomb in Siwa. But most likely Kawab.

I see that scholar is metaphorically knee deep in the existential and thought-provoking readings of...table cloth?
Ah yes, often has the great Alexandria pondered upon the deep interwoven intricacies of that which confounds all of mankind to this day: clothy...table ornaments.
This concept.
This is the one concept where I think VR treadmills would be really cool.
(Of course minus the parkour.)
Very impressed that they made it available separately. Means it can be purchased as a study aid.
Very neat mode and as usual great video
8:05 honestly, the only flaw I see in Discovery Mode being a teaching tool is that Assassins Creed Origins is rated M for Mature here in America and 18 in Europe, which makes Discovery Mode have to jump through some hoops to get to the audience it should get to: children
The Discovery Mode can be bought without the game itself
Patrick, watch the *whole* video this time.
The Critigamer I wasn't aware this mode was available even without the main game
It’s also rated teen for the standalone, getting this for my kids
Oxus The Otaku honestly, if I finished college and got a teaching degree I would probably use discovery mode as a teaching tool (both legitimate teaching and an excuse to get paid to play Xbox)
Weirdly enough i am really hyped. I want to run around in ancient citys without fighting.
would've been awesome if this kind of feature had been introduced in earlier games. this kind of interaction in the Italy-era would've been amazing
this discovery tour being a thing makes me excited especially since it's gonna be all about ancient egypt, which is the single most fascinating thing to me
Well, my inner history nerd is freaking the hell out. I'd like for more games to do this... or just have a more diverse set of locations. Like Ancient Maya. I would LOVE this mode in Syndicate, although 10 year old Egypt obsessed me is super excited for this.
lets face it, the main reason Ellen was interested in point 6 was that she was able to play as someone her height in a video game
There's always something new from Egypt!
So stoked!!!!
I really hope Ubisoft Montreal makes a build of this to be used in schools as an introduction to Egyptian history.
i loved history at school, and ancient egypt was the best :D i want this
My kids are going to love this. They mainly stick to Lego games but this will be a great bit of fun for them. Doubt they'll stick to the tours though 😋

I always find learning something new fun but being able to do it in a video game, and in such great detail?! I'm tempted to buy AC just for this DLC!
This is really cool I just wish they still kept the database in the game... it was one of my favourite features and taught me so much
Do a video on the best performances in gaming...best stories in gaming...most emotional stories in gaming.
This is an awesome addition to the game. If only they can add the interactions in the base game like additional jobs for money.
As a huge history buff, this is actually REALLY cool
I'd love an Ancient Rome that can tie into the Brutus outfit and explore that fantastic piece of history
I saw this video in my side list of videos before I got the notification.
just the tour mode? :O I'll have to check this out! can I still pet and assemble an army of cats, though?
Discovery tours really need to be included in all future assassin's creeds.
"Onward stead to history." That sounds like a lot of fun.
So does time travel
I would love to bring this to my kids' school.
Such amazing games AC games are, I always wanted to explore ancient societies! O_O
sounds cool, kind of different. reminds me of a more interactive version of the galaxapedia in Mass Effect where it had a history of all the different aliens in the game world
I wonder if Ubisoft would be willing to sell a discovery tour only version in bulk to schools.
I now want to become a history teacher just to use this as a teaching material
You can go inside....the library...of Alexandria!? Now I'm definitely buying this game! (Crying inside over the destruction of the great library of Alexandria. RIP Hypatia)
Between the beautiful scenery in Witcher 3 and the vistas in this game, I'm really torn on which one is better. They did an awesome job on this game.
0:35 did anyone else feel heartbroken cos you’ve been pronouncing Cyrene wrong forever?
