i really feel like crying rn bcs this video makes me feel happy once again. after three years of choosing a career that had zero % of creativity, aka microbiology, and not even knowing what i wanted exactly or who i am as a person, this year has been a re-discovery to myself after being lost for so long. thank you for making this video and i hope that i'll stay up late now to binge watch all of them lol. for anyone who is going through a period of time where they feel lost to which career they want to pursue, take your time, know that you're not alone, and know that u can take as much time as u need even if it's 3 years or more, just never settle for something that seems less and that isn't your thing.
also I think I would so love to study something like graphic design but I'm so scared I'm not creative enough bc most of my art work is based on taking other peoples ideas...
AnnabelleCMS I think there are lots of different techniques and exercises etc.(that art schools and such might teach you) to help get your creative ideas to the surface. Cause everyone has lots of creativity in there somewhere. Sometimes it just can be hard to find.
you should read the book Steal Like an Artist. Most artists start by taking ideas from others. The difference from being a straight up thief is then expanding on those things, finding their own style etc. The book is really inspiring and can be a big confidence boost if you don't feel 'creative enough'
Just recently graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design. Loved every minute of it and miss taking classes and doing projects a bunch. I wish I would have taken more printmaking courses though - I took one my last semester of college and LOVED it. So much fun! If you're into illustrating, lettering, and things of that sort, it's a great way to get away from computer while creating cool stuff and also add lovely hand-made textures to your work. I miss using the studio to do silk screen printing, as well as the press for linocuts. Take some printmaking classes!
It's so crazy that you're going into your junior year!! I've been watching your videos since you were accepted to Chapman & now I'm starting my freshman year of college in the fall!
I don't know how long I waited this for haha I just love your graphic design related videos, I just finished my first semester in GD and I love it even more than I thought I would! And to come home and watch these GD related vids makes me sooo happy
it's so awesome that you're persuing you passion! Did your parents have a problem persuing an art major bc it's usually seen as a not very stable job market? Also all your projects are awesome can't wait for more graphic design videos!
I'm Norwegian, and when checking out your portfolio, I thought it was so neat how you designed The X-Games there! Your work is fantastic, please keep it up! All of your designs are great, and you REALLY did put in a lot of research!
It's so incredible to find out that someone you really enjoy on RUclips study the same thing as you. I'm a graphic design student here in Brazil, your college seems to be amazing, it covers many specific subjects that in mine doesn't have. Loved your project for the macaron packaging design, it's so cute!
Hey Lindsey, would love to know about your favorite or must read books for people who won't go to art school and want to study graphic design on their own.
Check out Aaron Draplin's book, Pretty Much Everything. It's a good read! Also, I love the site Skillshare. Great tutorials on there for so many things!
Radwa El Maghraby Graphic Design: A New History by Stephen Eskilson is great if you want to delve into graphic design history 😊 also, watching tutorials on the design programs is super helpful!
omg i just found your channel and we are literally the same person. i have been a part of my yearbook for three years and love it so much. but my high school one is literally the worst so i dropped it because no one has any experience or cares about it like i do. i love photography and now developing a passion for graphic design yet don’t know where to start. i’m trying to take a college class this summer and hopefully that will give me some guidance. so excited to dive more into your channel :)) xoxo
Oh my gosh, this is completely unrelated to the video content but the way your eye makeup matches your hoodie is SO GOOD 😍 Edit: just finished the video and congrats on your internship! So exciting!
I am currently a web design major at community college..art school is $$$ and it's really great. I was in the same position as you not knowing any software knowledge and let me say your UI design is really great!
OMG I feel like you've taken the words right out of my mouth. I'm going to be a senior in Graphic Design at Penn State (not an art school :[ poo) next semester and I miss so dearly the hands-on projects of my first two years. And OH MY LORT I use black and red (and more black) way too much in my own designs, yikes. And it sounds like we have some of the same classes and projects in our classes, how FUN!! Thanks for the tips and good luck for next semester! Congrats on the amazing internship, I'm on mine right now (:
I'm going to Savannah College of Art and Design in the fall to study production design and I am so nervous! This video made me feel a lot better to know I don't have to know everything before I get there, you're a true gem Lindsey 💎💕
OMG I DIDNT KNOW YOU WERE A GRAPHIC DESIGN STUDENT im going to be a freshman in college declaring graphic design as my major andive already done it for four years at a tech school and im so excited
I'm earning a BS in Graphic Design at NewSchool of Architecture and Design, Downtown San Diego. I have always wanted another perspective / insight of how other schools handle the major or whether or not it is different, but it sounds exactly the same at Chapman!! In a way this is relieving?? Im about to be a sophomore- it's so nice to find someone, especially on youtube, that shares the same interest, id love to hear / see more!
So excited to see this video from you! I'm about to be a senior in HS, and I'll be applying to graphic design programs then! I'd love to see a video about your current portfolio :-)
I love graphic design and it is my passion but that is it graphic design. I'm not good at art that is not graphic/digital like drawing. is there anything to get around that?
I would love to see how your School is set up and organised. I went to uni for graphic design for 2 semesters and I was so disappointed. It was so expensive and we had next to no classes it seemed like a total rip-off. I'm a graphic design apprentice now and I am really enjoying it. I'm so happy that I make the leap to dropping out of uni. If you can it would be great to see a day in a life of your school day :)
I am an incoming freshman majoring in graphic design, they consider it a BS instead of BA or a BFA, would you know why that is? Also, it's funny you say about the "staying up all night" because everyone who I have talked to in gd already says that they have spend several nights in a row napping under tables, they even had couches put in the lab. What are your tips on how to stay awake on those nights? lol I am a go to be early wake up early type.
Any tips on getting into a career in Graphic Design when you're a bit older? (23). I studied Graphic Design when I was 19 but dropped out due to personal issues, now I'm in a completely different field that I am extremely bored with and I keep thinking about picking it up again. But I can't afford to do another course.. and I feel like the Graphic Design industry usually only wants younger people or people who have just finished their degree..
i work with a small firm in NY now and can tell you that it is all about portfolio when it comes to design. If you have a good set of pieces that reflect you, but also can show what you can do for different applications (print, digital, video if possible, etc) that is what firms and potential clients will look at. Try to have options and experiment with different styles too. There are also some really terrific books and blogs you can follow to further your education on your own. You can also always try to free lance to start out to build your portfolio, and if you don't feel like your ready to make the jump yet. best of luck with all you do!
Jade you're still at a great age where you can still apply for gd jobs and go back to school if you want. Agreeing with the other reply. It.s defintely all about portfolio and what skills you have. theres tons of free resources online as well as online courses you can take like lynda from linked in or skill share or code academy or tons of tutorials on youtube. just get to creating and find your style best of luck to you!
Is it really about age? I’m 24 and starting college from zero after graduating from high school 5 years ago I decided to go to college with graphic design in mind will that be too late for me too?
This was so interesting, and then listening to things you've learned how to make! Incredible. You should've vlogged it as you made the chair or book! Haha
I really wanted to do a film degree but because I didn't really know that much about it I didn't know if it was a risk doing it and listening to you say that you didn't know tonnes about graphic design but just trusted your passion for it and did it at college makes me wish if done the same...
On a different perspective, having to still carry both the giant folder with the 2 ft t-square and the 5 kg laptop everywhere i go for 4 years, being an architecture major is easily my main workout
wow you have such detailed classes specific to one thing, all my courses are general and go over so much info :( i wish i could do marker rendering that would be super useful to my degree tbh
I literally went into the desing instagram about 4 weeks ago and i have the purple macaroon thingy as my phone lock screen backround and i absolutely love it
Hi lindsey, im going into uni for design and i was hoping you would do a video on what you use to make your creations, i dont know much about design yet and i would love to know what kind of tech you need, or programs you use to create your projects. Thanks! Love your videos so much!
I've had some classes with Illustrator, Photoshop etc and I'm in High School on "Advertising profile" and it's time to figure out College. Thanks for that inspiring video 😊

yeah true that's such a positive way of looking at it so thanks :)
