    Here is my story in short form (well..). I became a Queen fan in 1976 after my brother introduced me to Bohemian Rhapsody. I was 11 at the time so me and my friends were listing to teen bop kind of stuff. Donny Osmond, Bay City Rollers and the such. Hearing BoRap was a life changing experience for this 11 year old. I became a man that day. It was like nothing I had ever heard. My days of listening to teen bop were numbered! So I delivered a sh*t ton of papers and went out and bought a Queen album. My first ever "adult artist" album. Before that is was just radio for the most part.
    That album was none other than Queen 2. By this time Queen had 4 albums and I chose Q2 because it was in stock. Had to run to the record store in those days and unless you wanted to travel downtown you had to buy local where selection was often poor. So I place the album on the turntable and drop that needle. The next 40 minutes go by like an acid trip. Truly mind expanding for what was still a young innocent mind. Those screams Freddie belts in Ogre Battle, that awkward hypnotic beat in Master Stroke. Those grand guitars in Father to Son to the ethereal beauty of White Queen or Nevermore. It is my personal favorite Queen album. Has it always been? Yes and no. There are times when other albums have taken the top spot. But if pressed to stick to one album. It is Queen 2. Second favorite is where the choice gets more muddled. Very very muddled.

      We had identical childhoods! lol
      Seen them live twice in the 80's, they had an album every year which was amazing for the time and highlighted the amount of songwriters in the group, they all eventually penned hit records. They struggled with sales at that time but that all changed with Live Aid where everyone on the planet sat up. Never be there like again.

    There are a number of Queen songs that have a Tolkienesque / Medieval theme. Freddie invented an imaginary land called Rhye with Queens, Ogres etc. The first three albums are full of this stuff. It's wonderful.

    Check out White Queen live at Hammersmith and it will blow you away! Music was changing in the 70’s. The look for men was anthropomorphic girl/guy looking. The lyrics and music was getting more complex and interesting from the light, simple music of the fifties and then the rebellious 60’s. The 70’s was for mystical rock and later disco. Since all four members of Queen wrote songs their music was eclectic and early Brian and Roger sang until they decided to let Freddie sing everything because his voice could sing anything. No auto tune and fewer tracks, less production equipment. No computer fixes. So bands had to be damn good!

    There a two songs not included in their first albums, Queen1 ( Mad The Swine) and Queen 2 ( See What A Fool I've Been) As a Queen fan and a musician I agree with You Sir on The Fairy Fellers Master-Stroke! Just crazy...so many things in a short song...wow! Brian guitar orchestrations are unique till this day! His guitar can sound like a violin, trumpet etc...and even trombone, but its from the other album))) Hello to You Sir from Ukraine, thanks for the reaction and cheers to You!

      Brian’s “guitar orchestrations”, sounding like other instruments, was made possible by The Deacy Amp (hand-made by bassist John Deacon from circuits found in a dumpster and his own innate genius in grasping the possibilities.)

    Excellent reaction! Queen fans have different favourite albums, some people love Queen II, for a lot of people their favourite albums is Sheer Heart Attack, A Night at the Opera, News Of The World or even albums such as The Works, a lot of people also lists Queen's last album Innuendo as their favourite. I have seen at least one person list every Queen album as their favourite, expect for perhaps for The Miracle. Queen only released their material on studio albums so it is easy to follow their discography. I personally really like the first Queen album, Innuendo and Jazz, but your taste can also change depending on the mood. All of Queen's 70's albums are top notch, and of the highest standard. These albums are all before my time, but it does help sometimes. There is the infamous Hot Space album which is very often hated by people who were around in 1982, if you don't have that background you can just easily listen to the album without preconceived notions, I wasn't around to read what the critics wrote at the time. (Queen were always hated by the critics they received some of the worst reviews from "top rated critics" that you can find).I quite like the Hot Space album, I have seen younger fans tends to like the album a lot while older fans do not like it all. lol
    There is a rumour that Freddie was writing a fantasy novel at this time, which is why he wrote so many fantasy types of songs. The Seven Seas Of Rhye for example is based on fantasy story that Freddie often told his sister, this was also Queen's first successful single in the UK. The song is connected to My Fairy King from Queen's first album. It looks at the battle from the view of the attackers.
    You can check out the Seven Seas Of Rhye live at the Rainbow 1974.
    The Fairy Fellers Master-stroke is based on a painting from Richard Dadd (who was in a mental institution for killing his father), the painting hangs in the Tate gallery, Freddie loved the painting, he was the artist, he studied graphic design and he designed Queen's crest. He describes the painting perfectly in the song.
    The song also features a polka, how many rock songs will you ever hear that features a polka?
    Ogre Battle is early power metal, it is one of the very rare songs that Freddie wrote on the guitar. But the live version is even better. I would love to post links but youtube deletes my comments if I post links in them.
    Ogre Battle - Queen live at the Hammersmith Odeon 1975.
    Freddie was a master at playing with dynamics, as you have noticed how some piano sections are louder and softer. He had the same expression in his voice as well. A great example is the beautiful delicate touch he uses on the White Queen.
    Father To Son is another great epic song from Brian May, this is another song that is better live, Father To Son - Queen live at the Rainbow 1974. Roger does a good job with his one song on the album, Loser In The End. In truth you should just watch the whole Queen live at the Rainbow 1974 and Queen live at the Hammersmith Odeon 1975. They play a lot of these songs, there is an especially amazing live performance of the White Queen, far better then the studio version.
    The song Funny How Love Is features the wall of sound production that was very popular in the 80's, from Phil Spector. It is a song that could be sung by a girl group at the time. There is a short story behind it. Trident studios was brand new in 1971, the engineers wanted to recreate the wall of sound technique on two songs, they had everything organized, it was two cover songs Comin' Back and I Can Feel Music. But they did not have a singer. They wanted a very innocent type of voice, because these songs were originally sung by women. Queen's demo types were lying around the office, and one engineer listened to them. He thought Freddie had exactly the voice they were looking for, they called Freddie in and he soon called Brian May and Roger Taylor along as well. These songs were released as a single, and it almost charted in the US, But it was released under the name Larry Lurex. Funny How Love Is was recorded as a acknowledgement of that original engineer who loved the wall of sound technique.
    You can listen to these songs, it is interesting to hear how young Freddie's voice sounded on these songs;
    Goin' Back - Freddie Mercury
    I Can Hear Music - Freddie Mercury
    Queen did focus and work very hard at production, their 70's albums of course have no synths either. The meat or basic foundation of the song were always done live. Depending on the song, they would record the drums, guitar and bass or piano live in one take, and afterwards they would add details to the track. Creating that live feeling is very important and it adds something more organic and human to the music, there are sometimes even small mistakes that creeps in, but it could not always be changed or rectified. Production these days are more about perfection, and in all honestly all of the top hits on Spotify for example always sound fantastic from a production point of view. But a lot of the human elements have been removed. Queen used 18 track tapes on this album, you need a lot of planning to record this much information on 18 tracks. Some of these song have 50 different cords, in today's world they can easily use 140 tracks on a song with 3 different cords. I suggest you search for the making of Bohemian Rhapsody, there are a very documentaries that goes into detail about how Queen produced their music, Rick Beato recently did a nice one.
    And yet, despite all of the hard work in the studio, a lot of people just like live performances more. Queen have often been voted as the best live band, they changed the songs for live versions, but it really works.

      Thanks for all the info, I love comments like these!
      I've seen the Beato video on Bohemian Rhapsody, cool dude. And you're right about today's production, there's this chase of perfection and trying to craft the perfect catchy song which I've really grown to appreciate more and more over the years. It's all about perspective and not having preconceived notions as you said. Thanks again!

    Thank you so much Terry for appreciating our favorite group of all time!! There will NEVER be another like them... thank you so much for acquainting this fabulous band to yet another generation of future musicians...
    The song "Some Day One Day" (the ballad) was sung and written by the guitarist, Brian May... the song "Loser in the End" (the funky drums) was indeed written by the drummer and sung by Roger Taylor...
    Some people think this album was a concept album of Freddie's fantasies of "The Seven Seas of Rhye", a story he wrote for his little sister as a child in Zanzibar...
    ruclips.net/video/VPLVqmRhj7o/видео.html
    Here is one man's idea of why this album was a concept... rather interesting interpretation.
    The highest falsetto voice (like the screams in "Ogre Battle" is not Freddie, but Roger Taylor, who Freddie affectionately referred to as his "dog whistle"... This album has a "white" side and a "black" side... All songs on the black side were written by Freddie, songs on the white side were written by Brian or Roger...
    Thanks again Terry, you are a wonderful reactor and am looking forward to all your future reactions to all 15 albums!! Blessings to you.

    There were parts of this album where everyone would just stop and sing along for a moment, and then just go back to conversation. No one ever skipped from one song to the next, it was a full experience album. It's interesting this decade to learn more about the background of the songs that we didn't know, for instance how Freddy is describing a painting with the masterstroke. 🎵 👑 🎸

    Fairy Feller's Masterstroke has such a strange title I was curious about whether Freddie actually created the title? I researched the title and it is based on a painting by an artist. If you see Queen's Official video on this song the actual painting is in this video. Nevermore also written by Freddie is directly linked to Fairy Feller Master Stroke. If you find the time take a look at the history of the artist who painted the actual painting. It is quite bizare. I suppose Freddie learned about this artist as a Graphic Art student in college.

    I still think the first 5 albums from Queen are the best work, With Sheer Heart Attack Brian May was out with hepatitis and then an ulcer for much of the recording, but the rest of the band went ahead and Brian filled in the gaps later, John Deacon played some of the acoustic guitar parts, First time Queen recorded using 24 track and although the album is somewhat erratic in style it is nonetheless brilliant

      For the most part I agree with this statement. But I have to say. Every time I listen to NotW I am inclined to add it to the legendary list. So many unrecognized gems on that album. My Melancholy Blues, It's Late and Spread Your Wings are deserving of more recognition. Hidden behind WWRY and Champions of course. Almost every song on that album has been a favorite of mine at some point. But yes. The first 5 were full of diversity and experimentation. Before they got into more radio friendly songs and albums.

    Way late to the Reaction, but sooooo happy I found you! I scanned through comments, but didn't see anyone explaining that "March of the Black Queen" is often considered "Bohemian Rhapsody's" sister. Add "The Prophet's Song" and you have the trio that many Queenies (myself included) love the most. Those three are definitely the most musically complex and possibly also the most lyrically complex and confounding. Your face while listening is glorious! You get it!

    Since I 'discovered' Queen and Freddie after the movie (although I'm their generation...I must have thought then that they're too Pop), I have concentrated on live performances because I'm so fascinated with Freddie's energy on stage. And while I've seen all performances umpteen times and still get the chills and stuck-in-the throat excitement every time they burst on stage, I have not yet explored the albums, as if I wanted to have endless discovery after I get tired of the concerts, which is just not happening. So, thank you for doing this!

    Have to apologize right off the bat for this being a lengthy comment. First, love your channel and what you are doing with it (and this is my first time checking you out!), so well done! Second, here is my history with the band. In the fall of 1975 I was working in an office here in Vancouver. One guy I worked with went for a vacation to the UK and came back to tell us that while there he heard this crazy song that had been #1 for like twelve weeks or something by this band called Queen. I had heard of Queen only because "Killer Queen" had been a minor hit on the radio here. Every week I haunted my local record store on the day new albums arrived looking for a new LP from Queen. In early January 1976 "A Night At The Opera" arrived and I bought it and rushed it home and played it to death. Shortly thereafter I decided to see about any older albums and in one fell swoop bought Queen I, Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack. I loved them all instantly and still consider them the best three Queen albums. My favourite is Queen II, mostly because of side Black, but honestly I love and have always loved all three. It kills me that so many music reactors on RUclips read to their "greatest hits", while ignoring these three early gems. I have not seen your reaction to Queen I yet, but will do so soon, and I very much look forward to your reaction to Sheer Heart Attack! By the way, have you reacted to or heard any Supertramp yet? Even as early as they were in their career, so many songs had an incredible, insightful commentary on various aspects of life. Just read the lyrics to Father to Son - amazing musicianship, but even more so when you actually listen to what they were saying. And that never stopped throughout their entire career, epitomised in the just incredible anthem Innuendo.

    QUEEN has been my favorite ever since , but that wasn't until late 74 early 75 . My first album I bought was A Night at the Opera . Since Sheer Heart Attack' is already on your next played list , I would like to recommend A Day at the Races .🙂

    The reason why the first album, Queen, seems "rougher" and "less polished" than Queen II is how it was recorded. If you read up on the history of Queen, they basically recorded the first album for "free" as the studio was testing new equipment, and Queen were offered to use the studio to test said equipment. So they were given basically free studio time. The issue was the time of day, it was either very late at night or very early in the morning as they had to let the more well known or popular artists use the "prime time" for recording. But with the success of the first album, for Queen II, the band had "earned" the right to record during the "prime time" now. They were able to be more polished and really learned production. My favorite years of Queen are 73-77, their first 6 albums.

    One difference to the first album is (acording to Queen themselves) that while they had great songs, they couldn't do their thing productionwise because the just got their contract and the record company forced on them how they have to produce the album. With Queen II the band could fulfill their own vision.
    BTW:
    thanks for the shout out! 😁😁😁
    Actually it should've been just "moribund" after a song by Peter Gabriel, but the name was already taken.

    So for me, 1974 I had heard of Queen with the success of Killer Queen. But it wasn't until 1975 and the release of what I consider the greatest song ever written, Bohemian Rhapsody, was released. I bought the 45 then the 8 track (YES I AM 61 LOL). So I had the 45 of BR and the Night At The Opera on 8 track, I was ready for a new Queen album. I went to the department store at the time and saw Queen II in the bin. I bought it home and put it on the family stereo, plugged in the headphones, and it was like angels singing as the heavens opened up and it was so amazing. Queen II is my favorite Queen albums and is one of my favorite all time albums.
    On another note, if you like Queen and the early 70's, check out another band in the same vein as Queen, imo, that band is Uriah Heep, still rocking after 52 years. Check them out. I recommend, well, most if not all of their records. With some emphasis on the early 70's, Demons and Wizards, The Magicians Birthday Party, their first album, Uriah Heep, Salisbury, man the list goes on!!

    The Fairy fellows master Stroke" I believe from what I have read was a musical interpretation of Shakespeare's "Midsummer Nights Dream". Where the Ogre battle, was Freddie's song describing a fantasy world that he created. I thought that the years of truly groundbreaking music, and REAL musicianship was gone , but I believe I have found a band that may have made me a believer again. I would love to hear your reaction to it . The band are 4 young Fellows, barely out of High school , but have already been nominated for a few Grammy's. You really need to listen to this song in particular. The band " GRETA VAN FLEET" The song is the official video for (Heat Above). This band almost channels the spirit of the 70's with a modern twist. Their lead singer sounds like a cross between Freddie Mercury, and Gedde Lee, with a little Janis Joplin thrown in for the Hell of it. Unbelievably talented band and singer, the likes of which I have not heard in Decades! That song (The official video for Heat Above, I think will blow your socks off and melt your brain.

      No offense but I really dislike that band, not the music in particular but just that it feels unoriginal in essence. They started as a Led Zeppelin cover band and when I hear them, an imitation is all I hear.

    • @headrushindi
      @headrushindi 2 года назад

      @@NimbusCloud95 you might want to hear the direction that particular song is taking them.It seems many were overly obsessed with their sounding like zeppelin , even if that was the case ..with a voice like that , frankly who cares .The pureists traditionally through history have rarely ever called it correctly. No one exists in a Vacuum , every artists designed themselves after a predecessor. It is just that not many are old enough to identify JUST who those artists all "sound like" . but after hearing that song I think they are on their way ..while others today are out there trying to be the next social media one night wonder. These guys are giving the up and coming artists free lessons in how to become the next Legends! I have been in the music industry Many years , as well as film . I have been around long enough to be able to identify the nexx trailblazer. In five years think back and see if I am not right.

    • @NimbusCloud95
      @NimbusCloud95  2 года назад

      I just listened to the song. I agree that it doesn't sound like a Led Zeppelin imitation anymore, and it's not particularly a bad song by any means. I guess I'm just not really interested in this band or sound at the moment.
      I never want to say anything too harsh or offend someone who watches my videos on what they like, so sorry if I came off like that. I just don't find it that interesting, something about this group just doesn't click for me. I don't doubt they'll have successful careers, but from my perspective it feels like they're doing a spoof on being a 70's group. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, just not what I'm interested in at all.
      The main thing that attracts me to a band or artist is sound and production, not usually raw talent or how well they can play an instrument or sing. In 2022, I want to hear something that's forward thinking or someone that puts a unique spin on a particular sound or genre that I like. That varies HEAVILY from artist to artist and can be super specific or completely arbitrary. Maybe I'll make a video on this subject 🤔

    • @headrushindi
      @headrushindi 2 года назад

      @@NimbusCloud95 Not every band is for everybody that's for sure , we like what we like. I was a teen of the 70's. The music that you are reacting to in many cases has been lost on today's society . I guess I became so dissolutioned with the artists today, who, if it weren't for over auto tuning their mediocre voices ,and over quantizing their tracks to hide the less than stellar musicianship , and prescision. Well , they can't hold a candle to yesterdays music. have listened to them enough , and know their backstory of where the three Brothers , and their friend (Drummer) got their love for the classic rock sound , blues, and such. They were raised on it .I do not see them as a mimic of the 70's sound , or a 70's cover band. They are the real deal. This is quite apparent to any musician who knows the Jeff Becks , and Duane Allmans of the 70's , and have heard one of their songs such as " Highway Tune" . They are writing original old school with all the talent and ability of the the Old schooler's. That's a far cry from a mimic of the 70's.They are bringing back the integrity , heart and soul to the genre, which is so badly needed today. Intelligent original music, powerful , and musically sound musicianship. Well not everyone will get them but like I said , I've been around the block a few times , and had my share of studio sessions with some pretty big titles. They are right there with the best of the best and are sharing it with a new generation.Keep on listening to the past it will guide the future impeccably. We have a lot to learn from the Aretha Franklin's, Michael Jacksons, Freddie Mercury's and Jeff Lynn's.
