    True story: My first time in Rome over ten years ago, I was waiting for the Metro to arrive to go to the Colosseum. When the train pulled up and the doors opened, I saw that it was packed, and as I was trying to decide whether to try to squeeze in, a woman on the train saw me, grabbed me by the arm, and shouted "Dai!" as she pulled me on board. They're really not shy, these Italians! :)

    Grande Tom..sto imparando più Ingliese con te che in anni e anni di corsi :) grazie! :)
    Anyway, a tip for your video... if you dont mind I woud add also:
    1. Embé? = So what?
    2. Vabbè! shortened form for "va bene, ok, I dont mind, I dont care"
    3. Mah! = to express doubt, incredulity in a negative way, like "really?, I dont think so"
    4. Ma dai!? to express doubt - not too strong , and also a beatiful surprise ...

    Hey Tom! I've been studying Italian for 6 years now, and let me tell you, it's nice to know that I'm not the only American out there that can hold a full conversation in Italian! Ha! I love watching your videos to refresh my Italian, they are very helpful!! As I was watching the video, I thought of some other filler words that I, myself, use when speaking in Italian. Here they are: tipo, cioè, ecco, “diciamo..”, “che ne so..”, "eh già", "ehi!", uffa, mamma mia!, ma dai, vabbè, etc. Ciao ciao! :)

    I learn from you more easier than my Italian teachers here in Italy, grazie mille Tom, you are good teacher! Please make a video about the conversation in hospital. When a foreigner is sick, it's hard to go to Italian hospital, because we don't speak well Italian to discripe what we have and it's hard to understand the doctor. Also please make a video about open the credit card in the bank. Buonagiornata Tom and take care dure to the quarantine 😊

    Excellent, this is what I needed to sound a bit more natural in my Italian speaking. Having started learning Italian up to 8 years ago, (mostly parttime loosely with grammar rules) been exposed to Italian speaking ppl for most of that time and living in Italy for the last 10 months I can carry a simple to medium conversation pretty easily, including getting the formation of a sentence right most times, I've known or heard these filler words but only ever really use "forse" (or you could say over use) because I didn't really know exactly what they meant even when other ppl speak them.. Grazie tanto per questo video. Bravissimo :)

    Hi tom!! You're very very good in Italian and your videos are very helpful for me to improve my English. Potresti spiegare in un tuo video la differenza tra if e whether?

    • @Equilibrium36936
      @Equilibrium36936 9 лет назад +4

      Marco Valgimigli Whether is a strange word that is hard to define. The word "whether" is an alternative word for "if" but has a slightly different meaning. It is usually used in a situation where there are two possible outcomes, but it is uncertain which one will happen. It often comes directly after the phrase "I don't know", For example you could say: "I don't know whether i can eat this whole pizza or not". The two possibilities are being able to eat the pizza or not being able to eat pizza so "whether" can be used. Another example: "I don't know whether it will rain or snow". Whether can also be used at the start of a sentence to show the equality between the two possibilities. For example: "Whether we lose or we win, I will still be happy". I hope that helped :)

    • @MarcoValgimigli
      @MarcoValgimigli 9 лет назад

      Jake Cadders Thank you. Very clear! Surfing the web I found only confusing explanations.. D: But could you put even 'if' instead of 'whether' in the first two examples?

    • @Equilibrium36936
      @Equilibrium36936 9 лет назад

      Marco Valgimigli Glad you found it useful :) and Yes, in the first two examples "if" sounds fine but personally i think "whether" just sounds slightly more sophisticated. Although it could be different in different parts of England or the USA.

    Ciao Tom. Ti do qualche suggerimento da madrelingua.
    1) Nel video dici "ho voluto andare". Tranquiillo, qui sbagliano anche molti italiani. Il verbo volere in questo caso prende l'ausiliare del verbo che lo segue. Perciò, siccome si dice "sono andato" si dice anche "sono voluto andare". Anche potere funziona così, "ho potuto dire" da "ho detto", "sono potuto restare", da "sono restato". In grammatica si dice: "ausiliare dei verbi servili".
    2) Per mandare via un insetto, noi diciamo "sciò" non "sciù" :)
    3) Magari nel senso che dicevi nel video è I wish in inglese :)

    A word that came into my mind while watching this is Piuttosto. Is it similar to Comunque for changing the subject? Because the translator says it's like saying rather. I'm confused.

    • @andreaannunziata8268
      @andreaannunziata8268 8 лет назад +1

      Germán Buttazzoni
      It does mean rather, and you can use it to change the subject of the conversation. It's as if you were saying: "Rather than talking about this,..." but you just say "Piuttosto". So it's not exactly the same as "Comunque", which is a simple "Anyway"; if you use Piuttosto, you're kind of implying that you prefer to talk about the different subject you introduce. Anyway, it is a subtle difference.

      He say "weilà ragà" and it is an informal and friendly way used by we italians to say "hi guys" :)

      Ciao Gianlu ... Immagino che il tuo nome sia Gianluca? (Uno dei miei cantanti preferiti è Gianluca Ginoble de Il Volo.)
      L'inglese è una lingua di molte cose che non seguono regole. Pensavo che volessi sapere il modo corretto di usare la parola "dire":
      I say,
      you say,
      he/she/it says. ("it" as in "the sign says..."

    It miss "cioè" as a filler word!
    E un suggerimento.. The expression un po di più is used as "ne voglio un po di più" but if you want to say for example that some word is more used than another one you should say "questa parola è più usata di quella" or "questa parola si usa di più"

    Tom, ventoso si dice ma... è come dire "poco" non tanto! Altrimenti dici / diresti:
    C'era un forte / fortissimo vento, che ti portava via / ti porta via.
    C'era una tromba d'aria ( per dire proprio TANTO )
