    For us older fellas who have hearing difficulties it would help greatly if you eliminate all the background noise, ie the radio. I’m in the same situation as you in that electrical takes full concentration and the background sounds distract enough to be problematic.
    Thanks for the video.

      Thanks. They are.
      Just tore the top end and base off today. Got new head and cams from GS guy. BIG help again. Having the head redone, cylinders honed, and engine bead blasted. Not going to be a show bike, but I hope to ride it to Sturgis rather than my Harley. :-)

      Victor, I know your post is old but I was not getting notices.
      Anyone who needs expert help with these Suzuki bikes needs to log onto the GS site:

    I have a 1980 gs1000e and I have some serious issues. I am just not getting any power whatsoever. How could I ask you for help?

    • @dougfresh1341
      @dougfresh1341  6 лет назад

      First, Thanks for viewing. Will try to help. I always direct everyone to go to the GS website: thegsresources.com/
      Also: members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/
      Do as much reading on this site as possible. It will help you know your bike.
      MUST READ: members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/images/GSR_Greeting.html
      This last link will tell you the 10 must repairs for the GS bike. I've done all of them except the Stator change.
      You say not getting any power... Questions:
      How many miles are on the bike? How long have you owned it? So it starts, but doesn't move? Have the carbs been touched?
      Look at that list of 10 issues to deal with and tell me how many may be an issue.
      Hope that start helps.

    Would the stator, rectifier also cause issues with the headlight? My battery dies and the headlights dont work on my gs650g 1982

    • @dougfresh1341
      @dougfresh1341  4 месяца назад

      Sorry, my YT comments have not been coming through. Yes, the headlight can be affected by the rectifier. When that is defective, it will not send the necessary 13-14.4 volts the battery needs. So your charging system will be running down your battery power.
      Use an electrical tester and check the stator and regulator. That's easy.
      Thanks for watching!

    Did u ever fixed it?
    What was the problem on the GS ?

    • @dougfresh1341
      @dougfresh1341  2 месяца назад +1

      Yes. Followed the process of creating a single point ground. That advice is one of the 10 items to address on these GS bikes.
      See GSresources website if they still have it.
      Thanks for watching.

      @ I don’t know what u mean by that but assume u made 1 ground to engine or chassis ? What other 9 issues I need to be aware of if u could give me some light. I bought a GS650G 1982 n looking to build it. Got it for $250 not bad huh lol

    This made me a little crazy. Did you figure out why the black ground wire from the battery ground caused it NOT to charge? That made absolutely no sense to me.

    • @dougfresh1341
      @dougfresh1341  4 месяца назад

      Sorry so late. My YT notifications weren't loading. But no, I didn't. However, after connecting a single point ground as suggested by the GSresources guys, I had no further issues. The bike was a blast to ride. I sold it a couple years ago to another old biker. He loved it but has since stopped riding.Good luck and thanks for watching.

      I’ve almost finished this project. The website thegsresources.com and guys associated with it provide huge help.
      Mainly there is a list of 10 issues to address when restoring these bikes. And of course making them road reliable.
      I highly recommend the advice from that site.

      Hey Josh, admittedly, electrical problems are difficult for most of us. That said, first Google how to do an electrical check on your bike or similar. They are mostly alike. Motor turns the stator, stator produces a charge, sends to regulator, which in turn dials down the charge to be used throughout the bike. Have a good volt meter and make sure the stator is producing correctly. Then test the regulator. And the battery.
      Also, go to www.thegsresources.com website. Search the threads for your model. There are guys on there who have fixed them and there's a lot of knowledgeable guys there willing to help.
      And perhaps the best site of all is found here:
      members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/
      There is a manual for your bike. And the guy who runs the site is a GS god... yes, god. Good luck.

      Sorry about late reply. Wasn't getting RUclips notices.
      No. The motor was in pretty good shape. All the usual problems of the GS needed attention. There is a list of items you must address on these bikes to make them run right and reliable. Here is a link to the GS bike website. A lot of info that will help you.
      www.thegsresources.com/index.php
      There is a guy who will rebuild the carbs very reasonable if you ship him the set.

    Dont know the reason why ? but there is definately a reluctance with owners of old bikes like these NOT to replace old worn items like this for new, i have the identical model colour, year bike to this one if id gotten charging issues with it id have bought a NEW genuine suzuki regulator/rectifier unit for it, items like this are STILL available new from Suzuki nothing lasts for ever !,
    i wouldent say these bikes suffer from electrical gremlins , NOTHING lasts forever regulator rectifier units are popular for failing and going faulty on old bikes these are all 38 years old now cant help thinking you'd have saved an awful lot of time and effort there by just buying a brand new genuine Suzuki unit for it ,

    • @dougfresh1341

      Sorry about late reply... However my reply is a quote from the GS Resources Website. Managed and attended by guys who know these bikes as good as anyone in the World.
      "There is one serious problem that probably affects all GS models: the charging system. This problem, usually ascribed to the stator, is in fact caused by the regulator/rectifier. You can read more about this in "The Stator Papers".
      This problem is so serious and so devastating that it contributes greatly to the GS having a very bad name as far as electrics is concerned -- as someone said "with an electrical system so bad that it makes a Yugo look good".
      You may want to look at the sight.

    would be cool if we could see what you are talking about and not a close up of your seat.

    • @dougfresh1341

      I hadn't noticed the seat was in the way. But if you look at the view at 02:50, you can see the ground connection for the solenoid that I was talking about.
      Maybe in your video, you can be sure to detail that.
