This is the kind of superhero documentary I live for. I don’t care about the cultural impact of heroes tackling social issues or how this book broke so many sales records or how this was a ripoff of that. I love watching DeFalco and Frenz talk about how the black suit caused so many changes to the book and how they started to switch costumes based on the type of story they were telling and how decisions changed based on fan responses. You can’t see that now with comics written for the trade and writers having a desired end goal in their heads that don’t allow any minor deviation they hadn’t planned for. I’m glad to see this live on and hope other people enjoy as much as I did.
I remember watching this on TV back in 07. This is what got me into comics beyond the movies and cartoons. Immediately after I picked up the birth of venom tpb.
Fans claimed marvel was ruining Spider-Man because they changed his costume? And threatened to protest outside the company? And said they would never read marvel again? Wow. Times have certainly changed havent they! I can't imagine comic fans acting like that today!
I don’t even know what the big outcry in comics was when this original comment was posted but it’s literally timeless that comic fans get mad at any changes 😂
The music in this always sounded so ominous and depressing to hear as a kid. Especially the credits. Which perfectly fits with Peter's neverending life issues and being hopelessly addicted to the suit that's slowly killing him inside.
16:05 Plus it gave him the opportunity to have a larger wardrobe that he didn't have to buy from JCPenney or the Salvation Army since he was almost always strapped for cash lol.
29:39 A brilliant creative idea that Todd says was also known as "my plan to get that goddamn black suit off of Peter Parker." He hated the black suit and had plans for the red and blue costume he grew up with.
Well that certainly explains the reasons for my long seated contempt for Todd. That costume was the reason I started reading Spider-Man as a kid. Issue #300 made my dislike for him official. The whole Miracleman mess he perpetrated only put the final nail in his coffin. Glad Neil Gaiman won that battle, too.
@starsdealer3473 without Todd Mcfarlane there won't be Venom as well Mark Bagley(aka our favorite artist),Carnage and many symbiotes including Anti-Venom all we know and love.
This is a very cool and interesting documentary. I didn’t realize it was so much backstory. I remember the suit from Secret Wars and thought oh cool he looks like a Ninja (SnakE Eyes) I was all for the new look.
I always liked the black costume (comics not Spider-Man 3) it just seemed more elegant n classy and would make him seem more mysterious I guess it’s just my preference though
No mention of the reader who designed the black and red costume in the first place and sold his drawing to Marvel ? It's a shame Randy Schueller doesn't get any credit

Very happy we could help preserve this cool documentary and share it with people online!
hey look its the guy with the subs

Thanks I used to have this on dvd when I was like five
You don’t even like The Black Suit/Symbiote You mostly hate it actually
How's the homemade costume you made? Still good?
R.I.P John Romita Sr.

Yeeeah.
Spider-Man 3 from 2007 is probably my favorite out of al of them. The suit just looked sleek as hell
It's good but I personally prefer the insomniac spiderman 2 black suit
I still have this on DVD, I didn't realize it was lost media!
@Tee Lotus Spider-Man: Origin of a Superhero, I believe.
Loved how they explained how the Black Suit came to be.

Same here Comcast on demand!
I remember watching this documentary online back in college, May 2007 in preparation for the then forthcoming Spider-Man 3! Ahhhhh memories

Never seen this before so thank you for uploading. Really interesting to see the history of the black costume!
Am I the only one who prefers the black cat from the Spiderman 2 video game? Hot!😍
So happy to run into this!!!
Tom Holland needs to beg Marvel to make his role as Spidey goes....going into Secret Wars....even add Black Cat for a new actress

DragonBatSpidey that’s how we got a high res copy to upload. Came from the dvd I used to watch as a kid
So 252 ASM came after Secret Wars 8?

no, Amazing spiderman 252 was, it came out 7 months earlier
Not necessarily its first appearance as Stephens pointed out but when he originally acquired it.
bruh nice

A fan made the black costume and sold it to marvel for 250$ In a contest they had at the time.
