Im an Ex Royal Marine, im now a joiner. I also been in northern norway for many months living out of tents everything roger is saying is exactly right. Heat up from the inside out, if your feet and hands are cold a hat is your first port of call. Great video roger.

Layers, plenty of them. An old motorcycle courier trick is to wear wristbands, as that's one of the points where your blood is nearest the surface of your skin. Keep your wrists warm and your hands will be warmer. Same goes for your ankles so get your 80's ankle warmers out. Or wear longer boots. 😉

Don't smoke - when I was young I smoked and my hands and feet were always stone cold in the winter. Gave up smoking and since then have never suffered with the cold. Because your circulation will be so much better I believe.

I think it would take more than a day to make the video but I drove up to Finnmark (no longer?) and ended up in Berlevag. We bought an old pitch pine fishing boat Fiska Skip and sailed it around the North Cape and down the coast in the dead of winter in the dark.
We had no navigation skills just a book and no seamanship.
We were a news item. Nobody (including me) thought we would make it.

Always makes me laugh how people spend £150 on a pair of trainers and £25 on work boots then complain... we spend majority of our time in our work boots, so look after your feet and invest a little more money.... always get composite safety boots instead of steel as they won’t sap the heat on a cold day... I use Dunlop Purofort thermo wellies and after a few days of getting use to them they really are amazing.. probably won’t suit everyone but worth a try in cold wet weather

You certainly know what you're talking about. Air circulation is the name of the game. Wool socks and it's better to get a pair of boots one size up and as wide as you can find. It's always been a mystery to me why footwear is designed as if we have pointed feet, we no longer travel on horseback and don't use stirrups. Crushed toes with tight socks is asking for trouble. Goretex boots don't dry quickly on the inside so they're no good. Keeping the liner or inside dry is essential so wax the outside with nikwax. I personally find the non laces slip on steelies type with the elastic up the sides are the best.

In Finland, Lapland, -17 is a mild day. -25c and nature holds her breath! old finish proverbs; "theres no such thing as cold weather, only bad clothing" "If your feet are cold, wear a hat." Ushanka designs are one of the warmest. Windstopper Polartec are good too. The windstopper Polartec is excellent for fleeces and jackets. A proper base layer, long sleeved and polo neck with a decent fleecee and windstopper jacket will keep you warm all day at sub -10. If you want to go high tech, ARRIS heated vest or jacket is the only one I've found that can get hot enough to make you flinch. Whatever trousers you are wearing, (dont use jeans!) nick a pair of the wifes tights and put them on underneath. (The thick wooly ones are great, fishnets not so much).

Also use thermal underwear made from wicking materials. You can usually pick them up in camping shops or Aldi sell them now and again either as ski wear or hiking gear.

@@SkillBuilder sounds great. I used to be a fly fishing guide in northern russia and BC/Alaska, been sailing all my life got rid of our Nicholson 303 couple of years ago. Returned to UK to behave myself, have a family and get a real job as a spark.

I cycle to work all year round and it is very true. You must keep the core WARM. Gloves are a must though due to the wind chill.

Hard to work in, you end up cooking but I have one for sitting in my cold basement

    A little tip from me;
Going on a run in the morning, and focusing on being 'open' with big swinging arms during the run. Will really set up good circulation for the rest of day, making you less prone to cold.
It also helps you work at a fast pace once you start work , with which you can actually stay warm.
In addition to this, eating huge meals that contain a lot of protein with warm you up even if it's cold food.

Old school felt insoles help (got ours at the Army surplus store) as do inner socks that wick away perspiration. I am diabetic and my circulation is relatively bad. My extremities get colder than they used to, one other thing is the wear mittens rather than gloves, if you can. And a hat with a chin strap. It was below zero Fahrenheit this morning when I was out for chores. I know cold, well drillers son, in the US we say colder than a well drillers bum (though we don't say bum).

Did your dad really call it his "core" or did he say something else?

Out there looks pretty cold and you are dressed like it's Summer...I guess your core must be pretty warm!

I use crisp packets in my shoes when road cycling, it works by reflecting heat and reducing wind chill.

Talking if steel toe caps in safety boots. Rogers's old enough to remember steel and aluminium toe clips and leather straps for racing bicycles. That was a recipe for cold on a wet sub-zero ride in February north of Newcastle!

Ah Stephen you stir memories there.
My classic black cycling shoes with the holes in. My wife threw them out. I loved those shoes with the nail on shoe plates and toe clips. What were those toe clips called? I am thinking it began Christo

You have to suffer for your art. I would love that trip to a nice pub. I am not a big drinker but it is a part of British life that I miss.
