I’m not gonna lie, I disagree with you about the Sideline story. My 2nd favorite song from him, the first is 4 your eyez only. But it's the beauty of making beats, we can't agree all the time as producers and I respect your opinion on the subject of this matter but still. Great beat imo ~ 🙏🏽🙏🏽

Cole has definitely improved a lot over the years. As far as production & rapping meshing together, The Off-Season is the perfect blend. He finally leaned into what made him popular in the first place with soul samples but also made sure to have the right trap drum grooves behind them to make his most accessible & fun listen yet
I loved Born Sinner. That’s my favorite album from Cole. Not sure if you’d heard both Truly Yours EP’s, you should give them a listen. Along with tracks like the cure and grew up fast. All love
Sideline story is by far my most favorite J Cole song. Simple beat maybe but his words give me chills til this day, and you can feel the emotion coming out of every word said. The talent this dude has is insane because listening to it I never really thought about how simple the beat is.

Not enough people were listening to J Cole until Wet Dreamz. The real fans know him since Dreams. Sideline Story beat is better than Hello. Hello just has more energy due to the drum pacing. This sounds like you wanted him to be 1 dimensional. Forest Hill is #1 but Sideline Story is #2 or 3.
Honestly maybe it’s the nostalgia but his first two albums weren’t that bad to me. But dear god that 3rd one ? Yea 2014 forest hills drive is easily my favorite album of all time. Right next to graduation
Sorry but your wrong. J.cole fans like his earlier work. Also I'm sure you weren't listening to any of this during the datpiff days. You sound like an outsider looking in.
A lot of story telling rappers like Cole, Eminem, Kendrick, etc use low key “boring beats” so you pay more attention to the lyrics and story rather than the beat. The opposite is true when you want to make a club record/radio hit. Banging beat with a catchy hook. It’s a choice and I think some do it intentionally
so he went from solid nice sounding beats to .... eh....we used to chill at a friends place and while we smoke and drink he be on the headphones making beats on FL and then after a while he was done and he put it on speakers and it was the most dysphoric pots and pans shit ever.. and we just try to hold in our laugh cause he had passion. Maybe my friend was a visionary... or a J cole producer...
I've been a fan of Cole's work since his earlier mixtape days (i.e Friday Night Lights). That said, I would be lying if I said he hasn't improved over time. He's gone from a promising up and coming artist with occasional misses to a solidified goat of his time in the span of a decade
it really isn't so much the beat in the case of j cole as it is his chorus and verses that go along with it. the beat may give him an idea of what subject matter to write about but we also overlook intangible things such as the environment that he is in at the time of hearing that could have influenced him to take it a certain direction. As well as other collaborators on the musical ideas. Personally I think he has gotten better along with the production that goes into his music. I do know he produces quite a bit but he isn't the only one. A common theme in catchy music is having a team behind the creation as the catchier it is to 10 people the more chances it has to be well received versus just one person thinking its hot.
I definitely think he got better over time. And I think that’s most of what you’re talking about in this video. It’s just overall progression on his part and subjectivity on the listener’s part.
I think "Sideline Story" is a better beat than "Hello" just because you add more detail doesn't mean it is great production. Sometimes less is more and to me the piano and drums fit what J.Cole was saying an the emotion he was trying to evoke. Just say you like more detailed production on beats doesn't mean it is necessary better some need more some needless plus "Hello" was the worst song on "2014 Forest Hills Drive" the drums sound offbeat as hell.
I don't think every well produced album needs to bring something new to the table Illmatic by nas is a great example The sample are pretty straight forward looped and the drums are not very special but the production was made near to prefection.
J-cole has top notch engineers to craft is sound .most of his albums were taken to a studio and recreated with hardware keyboards and live instruments from his demos /beats ..Its more that goes into making a beat .You are making seem like they just used a DAW.
cole's had good beats early on, it's a mixed bag though like any other artist. some songs work really well, others don't as much. but yeah, i don't listen to cole for the beats particularly, i listen to him because i like his raps, his writing, his technique. also, trying to find your way up in the industry is bound to come with some missteps and finding yourself. No sense in judging someone for the things they did along the way to get to where they wanted to be if their intentions were good.
Navie. Love you. But listen to Born Sinner again before grouping it with his first mixtape. After all he produced the vast majority of it and I believe it is on the same level sonically as 2014 regardless of mainstream appeal, which as a hip hop head you should know doesn’t really mean anything. 2014 had catchier hooks and overall different song structure choices which is what overall contributed to all of those songs popularity. But dude there’s some seriously impressive songs like “She Knows” on born sinner that are straight up production masterpieces in their own right regardless of how “safe” they are. Sometimes simple is okay, maybe even great with a lyricist like Cole.
