    Don't be fooled, THIS was the film that started the modern-current big-budget superhero genre (it certainly didn't start in the 2010's). X-Men 2000, released when the Superman and Batman franchises were literally dead, and after a bunch of forgotten c-rate cheap movies of The Punisher, Captain America, Fantastic Four, and several box-office disappointments of minor superheroes (The Rocketeer, The Shadow, The Phantom, Spawn, Steel, Blade- which actually made money but was thrashed by critics).

      "started it all" i guess technically.. but until iron man, they didn't have the budget or the box office sales we expect today. it was iron man that made movie studio's understand how valuable the comic hero i.p had.

      @@jmc2830 that's why Sam Raimi's Spiderman in 2002 made more than Iron Man in 2008 (850 vs 540 mil). Spiderman made superhero movies blockbuster potential

    • @jmc2830
      @jmc2830 Год назад

      @@michiel1162 the trend started with iron man, before that they did use comic i.p some highly successful, but most being failures, certainly by comparison to recent comic films. but spiderman specifically wasn't highly successful because it was comic i.p. it had high sales because the names attached to it and the specific i.p was based on.
      i mean come on.. it's spider man, your point fails to address the context surrounding the movie. spiderman is the most popular comic character of all time, with one of the most popular directors of all time.
      the movie industry did not see the value in comic i.p until ironman because they took a relatively unknown character, with a previously washed up actor and created a movie which resulted in massive success considering the context.
      you can put spiderman on anything and people will buy it, producers, movie makers, etc knew this, all you have to do is look at the numbers. they did not think that success could be recreated with nearly any character until 2008 ironman. which led to the surge in super hero movies.
      you just have to look at the time line, if spiderman was the determining factor behind Hollywood's obsession with comic i.p, it would have started alot earlier then it did.
      you had the x-men movies, the original hulk movie, daredevil, spiderman and a few others before ironman only spiderman being considered a break out success with the xmen movies having moderate success. with every other attempt to use comic i.p being underwhelming in every possible way.
      you can't just point to big numbers and say "look this is were it started" because it ignores the context and the proceeding efforts.
      they didn't try to recreate spidermans success yearly by bringing in new characters or teams regardless of their popularity like they do now, because it was unique to that franchise.

    • @michiel1162
      @michiel1162 Год назад +2

      @@jmc2830 Spiderman did Kick start superhero movies. after that succes movies like batman begins, Ghost Rider, Hellboy, Watchmen, Superman Returns and fantastic four received green light. And even some sequels for spidey. Without Spiderman Iron Man would've never been made. Iron Man may have started the MCU but not superhero blockbusters. I would even say the point where the MCU really took of was The Avengers.

    Neither Sir Patrick Stewart nor Sir Ian McKellen knew how to play chess during filming. A chess master came in to teach them.
    Rebecca Romijn-Stamos' make-up as Mystique consisted of 110 custom-designed prostheses, which covered sixty percent of her body and took nine hours to apply. She could not drink wine, use skin creams, nor fly the day before filming, because it could have caused her body chemistry to change slightly, causing the prosthetics to fall off.
    Sir Patrick Stewart was the first actor to be cast as a mutant, and in fact, had been a fan-favorite for the role of Professor X since the 1990s.
    Most of the eye effects were achieved by the actors and actresses wearing special contact lenses. The cast found these lenses uncomfortable and dangerous to wear. Rebecca Romijn-Stamos could only wear her Mystique lenses for one hour at a time, and had only ten percent vision. Tyler Mane kept his Sabretooth lenses in for too long, and ended up temporarily blinded for a day. Halle Berry wore her opaque white Storm lenses only once, found them unbearable, and insisted she have CGI for her eyes.
    According to the official profile by Marvel, Wolverine is a very short character at 5' 3" tall. Hugh Jackman is nearly a foot taller at 6' 2".
    Wolverine doesn't kill anyone in this movie
    Tyler Mane wasn't familiar with X-Men before he appeared in the movie. He prepped for the role with his son, who was a big fan of the comics.
    Cerebro is the Spanish word for "brain".
    The cast includes two Oscar winners, Anna Paquin and Halle Berry, and three Oscar nominees: Hugh Jackman, Sir Ian McKellen and Bruce Davison.
    Anna Paquin dropped out of the lead role in Tart (2001) in favor of this movie.
    This was composer Michael Kamen's only comic book movie.

    This was actually an ATYPICAL trailer for back then - being that it was the first of its kind, it was trying to present as much info up front as possible and not being vague, like many trailers. Keep in mind, the superhero movie market back then, with the exception of Blade, was owned by DC. Marvel up to that point had a pathetic track record at best. The trailer may seem cheesy now, but back then it was spelling out that something very different was about to happen. The name-dropping at the end was the end-all for us long-time X-Men fans who had been waiting for this moment for years.

      @@bowbugs8855 but Rogue had her own arc that was both important and heartfelt, she is one of the most powerful characters, and I loved it when in the cartoons she fought against the X-Men with the powers she's gained and finally gets to her right sense of mind. she often fails and fails again, and they were both equally important. I wished they didn't make one important without downplaying the other one. like in the first movie, it really revolved around Rogue and Logan, meanwhile in the second and third movie it shockingly transitioned to the love triangle between Logan, Jean and Scott, and showed little to nothing significant of Rogue. yes, I do know my stuff. I was talking about the movies.

    Still impressed how Bryan singer managed to bring the spirit of the comics to life. Next to the mutants and their powers he keeps true to the core element of xenophobia, intolerance, prejudice, discrimination, and battling for mainstream acceptance into society. Completely fits into what’s our current social climate right now among different ethnicities, communities, and races.
