Arisaka's Upgraded DesignateIR Laser Module

  • The USNV DesignateIR series is a relative newcomer to the civilian IR laser module market, and a welcome one. The early models had some weird jank and durability problems, but the manufacturer has been working with Arisaka to implement some much needed improvements. It may not be better than a DBAL D2 but at least it costs more.

    Heh that's my DIR-V with the broken clamp in that reddit shot. I will say that 3EIR was awesome to deal with, not did he fix/upgrade my unit and have it back to me in less than 2 weeks he listened to my feedback about making the clamp out of aluminum, going with Arisaka was not my idea but I think it was a great move, they make solid stuff. Just shot with my DIR-V last night and I'm still in love with it.

      I agree with you 100%, but let’s remind ourselves who these multi billion dollar companies are. Let’s talk about the biggest one being L3/Harris. I work in the military industrial complex and we are a big vendor for L3 in other aspects of things they manufacture. I got chatting with an L3 rep one day and asked “how come you don’t take a lot of what you make to market for civilians?” The answer was simple. “Why would we sell a few lasers to retailers when we can just sell them to the government for however much we want and make millions off one order vs maybe a few thousand to civilians.” They “care”, but not for us. We don’t pay as well as the Us government does. L3 also doesn’t just make cool guy ground troop gear either. They make radios, spy satellites, and more. Lasers are the least of their worries. Their entire company encompasses what the US DoD wants. Not what the civilian market wants. Contrary to popular belief most likely, there’s more money in selling to the government than there is to civilians. It’s not even a “ciivilian” market, it’s a “night vision” market. Go to your local range and tell me how many poverty poneys you see in a firing line. Maybe you’ll see a few Daniel Defenses with a UTG red laser attached to it. You’re probably the only guy out of 40 at that range who’s Into night vision and IR lasers. That REALLY condenses down the market for stuff like this to even bother considering taking a product that’s sold to the military, have to rework the entire device to not go over the legal limit of an IR laser, then bring it to civilian market for only a few to be bought. It’s not worth it to them

    I volunteered myself as a test monkey for the Designate IR-V when arisaka first released them a few months ago. So far so good. Only problem with mine is that the IR Laser has a vertical artifact, but it’s only visible with laser only. The laser is also suspiciously powerful, but with the VCSEL Illuminator it’s not overpowered at all and works great. My only real complain is that the adjustment don’t have any clickyness to them. But they are good and tight at least. Love the button and I’m running a UNITY AXON Sync to my Cloud 3.0 Legacy.

    Went to an airsoft event where they inspected everyones lasers with a meter to make sure they were within Class 1/3R limits. The DesignateIR-V that came through ended up being around 6mW on both Green Vis and IR, so this is unsurprising to me.

    • @ctrackthezer0
      @ctrackthezer0 Год назад +8

      What airsoft event was that? Most of the events I've seen don't seem to enforce any power limit which kinda freaks me out. Doing force on force with full power lasers seems like a great way to get unscheduled eye surgery.

    • @TheHelghast4life
      @TheHelghast4life Год назад +9

      @@ctrackthezer0 Gun Gamers Productions does. They have two test meters they use to check both teams before event start (one even came out of an optics lab). Laser status gets written on your wristband so staff can spot check if needed. Surprisingly people have been pretty receptive to the idea of lasers being tested and only have had one or two people who were upset they couldn't use theirs. They suspect probably half or more of what they test end up getting left in cars before games.

    • @Muricanwerewolf
      @Muricanwerewolf 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@ctrackthezer0 I wouldn't be too worried, you would need to have the laser shined into your eye for longer than is likely to happen, at a close distance. Part of the reason these IR lasers are designated as dangerous is when shined into your eye you won't have the blink response, someone would have to be trying to shine the laser in your eye maliciously to harm you.
      That said do I think that laser safety should be taught and enforced like in the OP's story? Absolutely.

    Another IR-V user. Orders mine from 3eir directly. Newer version. As mentioned. It does seem more powerful than stated. I did have an issue where my vis and IR we’re not co aligned. Sent it back to 3eir and had it back in 48 hours. No questions asked. Spoke to Mike, the owner of 3eir. Great dude.
    He did say they tested the IRV inside of a paint can inside of a paint mixing machine for multiple rounds. Also mounted it to FA Scar 17 (known to eat optics) and was fine.
    Mine has been durable over the 2 8 hour NVG classes I’ve taken. But time will tell.
    Illuminator is square and is brighter and cleaner than the fp peqs ive tested it against.
    If they can get their QC tighter, it would be the go to laser imo.

    I got the newest iteration from arisaka of the designate IR-V. It’s been on my bren 2. Initially I did have to send it back as my constant on stopped. But since I got my replacement it’s been through two night shoots, and has been solid. Roughly 1k rounds through 11 inch bren 2, hbi gas regulator installed. I also have a NGAL, multiple Fp peqs, and a holosun LE221r (got that one for my mp5k with a vampire head for cqb) and I can tell you, I’ve never seen output like I’m getting from this unit. The visible alone is like a lightsaber. I’m happy they made the diffuser cap captive, as well as the upgrade to the button and clamp, but god damn, I was in the woods and flipped the diffuser down and boom, instant day light. I agree, the numbers are “funky” and even compared to my buddies MAWL DA and another buddies d2, it blows them both away in output. Not necessarily a good thing, not necessarily bad. I’m just happy there are more offerings. I can say that this does just about everything the mawl can do, except it’s half the price, half the weight, and you can still shoot and use it with support hand. Try transitions with the mawl. It sucks. And that price, well hey, that’s GOV contracts for ya. Great video as always Hop.

    Phantom Hill needs to do a CTF3 with the following changes- click adjustable windage and elevation so that your laser doesn’t come out of adjustment under recoil- it happened to me; compatible with 18350 rechargeable batteries so you can run a Surefire M300 Turbo head, an off switch for the laser, and maybe make it take remote switches, though I can live without that last one.

    The money for these things are absolutely insane.... Paying 2 grand for something that can easily break on rail from slight torque.... I'd like to know what it costs these companies to actually make one of these.

    So if I have a 556 upper with a Dbal D2 but have a 300 blackout gun that I want a laser for, would the DIR-ONE be a decent option for the 300 blk upper that wont be shot out past 200 for sure realistically? (Edit) Also want a laser for the 300 because I have the RPNVG's and can split the tubes to singles and go night shooting with a buddy or something.

      I’m thinking the same thing. If you just wanted close range NV setup seems like this paired with a vampire would be about ideal. I can see the advantages of the other systems for outdoor but for CQB this seems ideal unless this laser is overpowered by the vampire illuminator

    If I had 2k for a laser I would just save another 1.5k for a MAWL. I hate that it seems like every fucking IR laser and illuminator is designed to be mounted at the 12 o’clock. My setup is meant for a 45° offset at the 1:30 and only the fucking MAWL is meant to be mounted that way.
