The Unity Axon Sync has a fatal flaw

- The new Axon Sync switch from Unity got some guys excited because of its potential to greatly improve the usability of a Surefire Vampire light paired with a standalone laser. I was one of those guys, but it turns out this setup has some fatal flaws and some irritating design choices that make it ultimately worse than the Modbutton Lite dual lead switch.

Unity created long leads due to GBRS request, they posted about it. So it will work with their hideous mount
That makes sense. Gross.
highly plausible
@Hoplopfheil know where I can pick up a CQBL?
@@chaoticcaninejb I do, but for your own good I won't tell you.
@Hoplopfheil lol I know I know, just need a lightweight vis laser only for short gun for a women. Tacswap has a couple but one was a scam
The more Hop I watch the less I actually understand what the ideal NV setup is.
A CTF-2 with nothing else
Now you're getting the idea.
Illegal out-of-band full power Chinese lasers
the more i watch him the more i understand focusing too much on gear often comes from people that dont train, you wont get any sizable benefit over your opponent after a set of accessories you got, say you get thermal and nvg + passive aiming you are already set to the top if you train
I think the goal here is build a setup that is comfortable, practical and most importantly makes hop sick to his stomach
I can’t believe that we as a consumer base allow them to sell a button with 2 leads for $150+
It's beyond ridiculous. I build stuff like this for my projects by scraping other things.
You're looking at 5 dollars in wholesale parts for these buttons.
@@chistinelane I dated a girl whose father owned a firearm part company, his retail price was about 3200% of his landed cost.
I think this is $5 landed or less, likely 3-4 dollars. cost of goods / manufacturing is probably $1
Especially when you notice the material and quality of the build. It’s cheap plastic. Not even aluminum. Not one of these things have lifetime guarantees and at its price point, it’s at the mark where lifetime guarantees are handed out
But its sold to civilians with NODs that alone should tell you there customers have big money and give no fucks
Just say you’re poor
There needs to be a 12 step program for people who try to make this shit work.
I just completed one. I bought everything for my rifle 12 times, until I found out that nothing works.
Once again topics that I'm not into, but I find myself enoying the video because I enjoy your commentary. It's evident you've experienced the products, and enough other products to have valid opinions. This is the type of commentary that people need.
Graham what he’s saying is don’t into night vision. It’ll ruin your f$&@ing life 😩
And also thanks for getting me into into night vision Hop and Brass 🖕🏼😁
I disagree on the complaints of functionality and ergonomics. I run mine without any real issues and I find that while the angled bit is a slight gimmick, the real selling point is that it's shorter than most other options you have for two switches. And running mine with a Modlite and a PEQ-15 functions pretty great, I've never had the issue you say where you accidentally can click the forward button.
What I WILL complain about is the cheap as shit materials they used for key components like the rail mounts and the plugs. The little rail cross bolts have to go through SOFT PLASTIC and so if your nut and bolt aren't perfectly clean and fit well you'll just end up stripping out the little indent that's supposed to provide resistance. The bolt wasn't even IN yet and it was stripping the plastic, which is complete cheap dogshit design. The Surefire plug isn't much better, it doesn't seat properly and if you bump it the connection gets knocked off.
I like the concept, I don't like the execution, and I wouldn't buy the product again nor would I recommend it just for build quality vs what you're paying. It's WAY overpriced.
yes why cant they make it out of metal
Thank you for going through these frustrations so we don't have to. Also, hearing you get more and more frustrated with the product as the video goes on is both relatable and telling of how badly this thing should have solved a problem but instead it just... Didn't.
Hop: _“My $400+ light and laser setup doesn’t live up to my expectations.”_
Me: Looks at Bic lighter duct taped to my Mini-14.
You've really saved me a lot of money and helped me improve muh guns Mr. Hop. I actually was looking at this thing a few weeks back and considered getting it, and on top of that I was going to butcher splice in a Perst lead connector to use this to activate a Perst 4 and SF Vamp simultaneously, so I'd not even have been able to sell the thing on the used market after I'd have been done with it. Glad I waited until you shook it down. Thanks fam.
Wow, just wow, how can so many gun people not know anything about simple electronics *you can make your own switches, even have someone print a housing for you or do it yourself or just buy normal motorcycle buttons or something.*
This video and it's comments really leave me shocked. Like, how is "I have all the features I need but cannot get them to turn on and off when I want" even an issue when there us literally wires already meant for buttons......sad
@@abstractapproach634If you know how, show others, unless you like complaining I guess.
@@abstractapproach634 When dealing with lights/lasers - actually using quality components significantly impacts light output, as the wires are "hot" in that current drop across a homemade switch will yield unacceptable resulting output.
How did you comment this 2 weeks ago when the video released yesterday 💀
@@Adidas_Altyn Subscribestar, homie, we get fresh Hoppy releases early, and also his cat's NSFW content.
Definitely seems like there's an opening in the market for night vision control systems that isn't being filled.
My money is waiting for whenever this industry can get its collective shit together.
Would be cool for Surefire to take notes on videos like this and do two things:
1: drop a new vampire “Turbo” that focuses on throw of white and IR for the light.
2: develop a basic switch like their dual pad that’s specifically designed around this light setup.
With our wonderful Fiat Currency not stretching as much as it used to. Having simplistic and even slightly more cost effective options on the table is gonna become more and more important for more people who want to do this but also have to live normal lives and pay normal bills. 3K+ for a MAWL, steiners ever increasing prices, or the eventual OGL isn’t realistic for a lot of people after spending 3K+ on just trying to get a PVS14 setup that doesn’t suck. That’s more than a lot of peoples cars are worth. Including mine.
Maybe I’m just optimistic, because I know at the end of the day Surefire, despite making good products, is a military contract company and doesn’t give a flying fuck about the average civilian.
god the environments you get to shoot at are incredible
the snow clip looked cinematic as hell. throw in black bars, color coding and generic royalty free tactical music and you got a movie
East coasters forever coping (this is me)
It seems more and more like the best way to run the 117 and vamp is to just embrace the limitations and keep it simple with the SF dual switch. You don’t get to activate both with a single click but that’s the trade off for trying to tackle it on the cheap.
Or, you know, learn just the tiniest bit about working with electronics and make your own button or repurpose one for a motorcycle horn or something. But whatever floats y'alls boat.
@@abstractapproach634mao, have fun with your janky piece of shit that I’m sure you’ve totally made and used
Sounds like you've never tried that yourself
@abstractapproach634 Damn you sound neckbeard as hell
I have mine set up where I index the laser with my thumb and the light with my for finger and l just press them both at the same time it is really not difficult.
If Steiner could just make a lighter and slimmer version of the D2, they could dominate. Also very glad I got a 9007 back in the day!
Now that's what I call value
$180 for a switch. LOL...
Good video Hop!
So you'd be OK with a SPDT *MOMENTARY* [not click-in] forward button (IR flashlight + Laser), and SPST momentary rear button (Laser only).
That seems like it would be pretty easy for Unity to do, just offer a different button (or have setscrew to lock out click -- some of these exist).
Although no idea how you stop (double-tap-to-stay-on Laser).
I just really like the KIJI and centerline over bore lasers. My setup is a Holosun LE117IR with a KIJI and Surefire M300 Turbo on an Echo monolithic twin body. The laser and KIJI are controlled with an Axon Sync and the Turbo is controlled with a ModButton Lite. I don’t mind that the angled button clicks. I can always click it off right away. Oh, and what I like about having the angled button vs the flat button is it makes it really easy to differentiate between the two with gloves on when it’s cold. Dream product- Phantom Hill CTF3. It would have click adjustable windage and elevation instead of just janky friction screws that lose zero, and it would accept 18650 batteries so you can use a Surefire M300 Turbo head. It would also have an off switch for the laser so you don’t have to take the damn batteries out between uses. I had a CTF2 and sold it because its shortcomings (adjustments lost zero, anemic white light performance, no off switch) were just too much, no matter how great its form factor was.
I use the axon with a D2 and modlight and love it. Once zip ties are applied, I dont have an issue with the cords. The ergos and functions are great for me. I like having a constant on option for both buttons. In my opinion, if you wanted momentary on, but you accidentally clicked constant on, that means your thumb is still on the button and just needs a quick follow up press to get it off again. Your milage may vary.

Run the box laser on a jagerworks A1 with an eotech + ngal. Ultimate NVG setup for me. You can popoff the magnifier and lighten the rifle at night and the magnifier (vortex 6x) can be used with NVGs to PID at night. Never found a more versatile setup
@Hop, I run a few OTALs and vampires with laser press pad at 1200 and the Vampire pressure pad at 130. The combo is useful for a light weight setup and is easily ran with a C Clamp grip. As for the Surefire while floodier, if that's even a word vs a 9007, A3, etc it does have a little more throw. Great vids keep up the great work.
Have you seen the focusable IR led light head from z-bolt? It has awesome output, but seems like there's no way to use it without a super jank setup.
Yep. Same problem as any of those things.
Your videos on these set ups really helps for someone like me who likes to plan it all out before diving in. I'm trying to plan a WL/IR set up for my B&T TP9. Any advice is appreciated.
BrassFacts is putting together a vampire/otal combo on his TP9. It makes more sense on that gun due to how limited all the rail space is.
Thank you for making this. I was genuinely curious why I wanted to avoid this setup.
My biggest issue with my attempt at this setup was the incompatibility between the LS117's laser plug port and the crane plug on the Dual Lead Modbutton. I had a buddy attempt the same setup and his worked fine, but I broke the contacts on my Modbutton's crane plug trying to bend them to fit into the Holosun laser plug port (his was a super tight fit that barely made it in). Modbutton told me "sorry, you're SOL, we don't support Holosun lasers". One very LONG and frustrating Holosun RMA later, I had a fresh new LS117 that also would not accept the Modbutton crane plug, the dimensions were wrong on both the plastic and the contacts. So either Modbutton's crane plug is too big, or Holosun's crane port is too small. Somebody got their tolerances wrong. I'm not ruling out the Modbutton as the cuIprit, becuase the plastic and hardware for mounting the button seems kinda cheap and weak and I wouldn't be surprised at all if their plug is out of spec. I have one thing left to try, cutting off and splicing plug from the Holosun factory pressure pad onto my broken dual lead button. Haven't bothered yet, because I abandoned the build and went with other laser systems, but I might try it just to see if I can do it.
For balling on a budget, I highly reccomend the CTF2 paired with the Zbolt IR head. It's roughly as big as a D2 and the buttons are a little small, and it needs to be run top centerline on a flattop with no FSB, but it has plenty of output, sits low beneath optics, and runs really good. Also it costs about $1100 for a complete setup with Zbolt and E1HT heads, half the price of a D2 plus a white light and tape switches.
is it possible to modify these to remove the constant on feature I wonder? there's a guide of someone doing it on an airsoft surefire knockoff out there, not sure if this is mechanically similar.
10:41 "sell em"
...
He sold them to me, and then I made the exact same setup functionally.
As a person who simply right now just owns a surefire vampire light, whats most logical things forward to get if i ever do bitr the bullet for night vision (ie tape switch IR unit etc)
They do make a shorter lead version BTW. Modlite is the exclusive retailer of it to my knowledge, it’s a 4.5” lead vs the standard 7”
I have had issues with the Unity Axon Sync and Unity were dicks about it and were difficult to deal with on getting it replaced. Finally, they wanted me to send it in for "evaluation" and said it would takes weeks.
So I just sent it back to Primary Arms and had a new one sent to me. That took 5 days, including mail both way. Did I mention how difficult Unity was to deal with?
So, my dream of a Holosun 221 and Surefire Vampire will not work due to phantom double click. Correct? I was planning on using this for my GHM9 as I do not need a lot of range.
“Hey guys, Javier” 00:00
I use an AXON. My angled front button activates my white light and the flat button activates my IR desig & light. Works perfect for my grip. But you're not wrong about the cable length and forward vs rear grip position and C-clamp. And you're especially right for us giraffes with long arms.
Are you using a LAM or a separate ir laser + designator as shown? In which case what model are you using of the axon?
Hey hop. What mount do you have for the light and laser at 36 seconds and can it be mounted to the gun like that?
Could you disassemble the device and disable the "clicky" feature to turn it into a permanent momentary only switch?
My issue with the Axion is that with a Surefire/CQBL-1 combo when you let off the white/laser button the light goes away immediately but the laser stays on for a half second longer. I wish it were easy to just make switches that are tactile, momentary, and function without delay but it seems like no matter how expensive a simple circuit is it will never be as fast as using the button on the laser unit itself.
I have the Unity Axon SL sync for my surefire scout and Holosun LE117G (because I’m too poor for NV). I like it so far. It’s comfortable and doesn’t hum like my mod buttons. I’ve found that if I need just white light I can just turn the laser off and if I need just laser for some reason I can use the button on the laser unit itself. It’s simple and it works 🤷🏼♂️
Have you had any of the phantom double tap? Where the laser will stick on.
@@jsushko I have not but I have noticed there is a slight delay with the laser turning off. Maybe a millisecond or so. It doesn’t seem to be an issue with the switch however but more so with the laser unit itself.
Hop is there any laser modules for pistols that are not glorified laser pointers?
Hop, what setup are you running for your NV videos? A camera with a PVS-14 mount?
You gonna review Armored Core 6 lmao? I'd love to see another mech game review.
I was thinking about getting the Axon (not the Sync version) for an upcoming build. I am definitely second guessing that now. I have the Surefire dual switch on a different rig and it's ok but I wanted something smaller. Any suggestions? Possibly dual Mod buttons?
Dual mod buttons is okay. I still prefer the SF
When you gonna get the GBRS goober/hydra mount Hop lol?
Are crimson trace optics any good? I'm looking for a 1-10 lpvo for my Windham weaponry 308 and want know if the CT should be on my consideration list. Am I wasting my time looking for a fog proof lpvo?
I'm not sure what fog proof means in this context. Some of the CT scopes are good, but 1-10s are asking a lot. The best one I've used so far is the Vudu 1-10.
i dont understand any of this :3
The brightside is as NODs are more utilzed by civilians we're bound to see things like the civilian power output reduced and products geared towards more flexible night shooting. Same thing as AR15s in the early 2000's versus today. More civilian money drives innovation in the area.
Mine came with 7" leads. Works great if your running white light vis laser on the dual lead button then switch over for ir illuminator ir laser only on the single lead button. Also used some m lock wire keepers off amazon would love to send a picture if my setup if you can give me some info where to send it to.
Id love to just have a light switch. Like a flip forward for on flip back for off switch.
Instead of trying to double press under stress hoping the light stays on you could just flip it forward.
What do you think about their new gascap usb-c link system?
Are you OK hop? We're here to listen
$300 for a BUTTON? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I don't know, I have two OTAL-Vampire setups, one on a Q Sugar Weasel with Hydra Mount and TAPS, and one on a GHM9C with Hydra and Axon, and it my opinion it works amazing. Now the largest difference between mine and yours is my OTAL is mid-mounted with the GBRS Hydra, but works out perfect.
I run the non-sync axon with a peq and a vampire, and I love it.
I have a hot button mounted at 9 to fire my light mounted at 3. Every time I shoot ,I click it ON. If I used this set up for anything other than training, It would get me killed..
It is a fatal flaw
I'd like to see a video where Hop isn't complaining about somenthing. I'm actually being genuine - I'd love to hear his favorite peices of kit, gun accessoreis etc. and why he likes them
He's pretty happy in the Gemtech Smith and Wesson video and Leopold 2-10 videos on tfbtv.
Of course that's just his first impression, I'm sure if he actually got his hands on them he would find something to complain about.
I feel like you must have missed a ton of videos
@Hoplopfheil your complain-to-happy ratio is definitely off. Love your content no matter what you do but it seems like you've been more frustrated than satisfied with the industry lately.
@@thegoosejelly It might be because the industry is just trying to sell as much bullshit to the unknowing as fast as they can.
Primary arms now sales a 4" lead version of this, just picked it up.
I’d love some details on that rifle build, looks great
the welltool IR head is basically too bright unless you are throwing far. I have the cap that it came with drilled out with a peep hole when I was using it with an otal-c. I have the mod button. I now have a ls321 and haven't ditched the welltool off that gun yet but I might. I still like it when hunting an open field as it lights up eyes that I wouldn't see otherwise, but thermal is going to fill that role for me soon.
I run my cables forward and then back to the plug port. The light and laser bodies and mounts trap the excess cable so I need no zip ties and have very little exposed cable. I love both the axon and the modbutton dual lead. I use the axon on a dbal i2 9007 with surefire vampire for a tight low beam flood high beam kind of setup. I use the modbutton dual lead on a cqbl vampire combo where I get both with the pad and laser only on the top of the laser. I’ve had no problems with either.
this shit right here folks is why hop is a great guntuber. my autism would go wild with all the connectors and capabilities, but hop's autism objectifies it and makes a video. anyway, back to my 9000 incomplete gun projects.
So if not this, what dual lead switch would you recommend? Thank you for the great content!
Surefire SR07-D-IT, and don't try to pair devices.
I own an AXON for my NGAL. Thats really the only laser i feel this is good for or the dbal with the vis over ride.
The option when you hit the white light to have the vis laser turn on regardless of what the laser/illuminator is set at is nice if you flip nods up. Then, have the rear button to go back to ir mode.
For any other set up it isnt worth it. Imo
If your country or your availability can´t get a full power peq, would you recommend getting the otal IR laser + surefire vampire?
Nope
Hop, did you see the new Trijicom drop???
I love this guy. I always learn a lot, plus he's super chill and funny. I'm THAT guy who's trying to run an OTAL-C and a vamp M600 AA Scout Light on.... an AK lol. I'm up to the procurement phase of the pressure switch and the SF tail cap. I've got the Vamp Scout mounted on a Magpul M-Lok fore end and the OTAL mounted on a RS regulate barrel mount lmao. I know lol... I'm just refusing to go Ultimak, lest I'd sacrifice an incredibly titillating traditional AK silhouette. From a logistical standpoint, AA batts > CR123s
I'm content with my Vampire and OTAL-C setup with a hot button. It's fine for my shooting distances and is a decent setup for my pigfat X95.
CamoForm or Goon Tape for wiring. Just wrap them up. No more zip ties or clamps or whatever. Just stuff all the excess cable under them and wrap. Done. Painless. Plus it's nicer to hold and helps a bit with heat.
What if you used something like the hydra and then have a white light and dedicate IR light up front
That sounds awful, why would I ever do that
I have my surefire vampire paired with a Steiner tor mini ir laser on my B&T 45 SPC Pro. Other than switching, I feel it’s the perfect compact set up for a PDW.
Steve Fisher's low light carbine class talked me out of counting on the "momentary" activation of lights. So much of the complaints in this video become less of a problem .
Wym?
@@jamaicanomen Steve Fisher thinks we should condition ourselves to use constant on and off instead of momentary, for white light and IR. That's his teaching though. You do what suits you the best.
I'd like to dissect his reasoning for that. Given his background it wouldn't surprise me if that's a holdover from old experiences.
If you don't have true momentary, you should absolutely not rely on momentary.
@@Hoplopfheil Thank you for your opinion. I experimented with both techniques to see what suits me the best. While you are proficient in holding down the momentary button continuously without affecting the ability to shoot well, I find that tough to do with my mod button. @@Tofu1998 hand size and button choice could both be factors. If you have beefy fingers and/or are wearing gloves, getting constant pressure on a tiny modbutton or MB lite might not be a given. I prefer Surefire dual pad switches or Arisaka momentary tailcaps.

Can anyone explain to me why a standalone, focusable IR illuminator does not exist? Seems like a huge gap in the market for those where FP units are unobtainable or unaffordable
It does exist but they're governed by the same restrictions as everything else. Steiner makes a standalone version of their D2 illuminator called the SPIR. I might have found a setup you can try. Z bolt makes a dual switch tail cap compatible with sf and arisaka bodies and uses crane. This will let you use the dual crane lead switch that comes with the dbal a3. I use it on my streamlight and holosun and it works better than my dual lead modlite button on arisaka and dbal a3. Give it a try it might be to your liking.
Check out the unity tactical Axon SL. Same as the modlite but it’s the annoying button you hate.
As far as the axon I’ve been using it since the first month it came out and I don’t see any of your concerns. It’s a great product that works better than the big ass taps. Especially on a 11.5.
You should put the z-bolt IR surefire head on this setup or the CTF-2
I love these videos where you experiment with these weird bullshit setups. I use a PEQ15A, with a Malkoff tucked under it and no switches, and my ther is a PEQ15 with the same. Never had issues. But it still fascinates me to see other people go down this same rabbit hole.
