I've tried this quite a few times. It's OK if you're super desperate and live out in the middle of nowhere. I always end up buying new replacement packs on eBay for around $15. Buying a sub-C size battery with welded solder tabs hasn't been good for me because the pack cells always seem to be just slightly smaller and there's no spare room, so you need another failed pack to pull from. I've tried this method with 18650 laptop battery packs, too, and it's just not worth the effort (lots of delicate charging circuitry in laptop packs). I've had some luck scavenging from the battery recycle bin at the Lowe's store and also pulling high-quality solder-tab 18650's from old laptop packs (peel off the tabs, file the weld points). You might also try just going around the faulty cell with wire -- you'll only lose a fraction of the total capacity, and a good charger should be designed to accommodate the change. Just check pack and charger for overheating while charging.

It's the thermistor temperature sensor. It switches off the charger when the cells start getting warm - ie when fully charged and are dissipating charge current as heat. It's safe to use this method only with NiCad cells

individual cells from your non- working full set of batteries and from non-working individual multi cell batteries.................
What strikes me strongly here is that professional battery restoring or exchanging batteries never use a soldering or pencil iron to connect the batteries. They have a Quickflash soldering device which heats up VERY rapidly but doesn't touch the batteries long enough to destroy the individual cells as do the high heat soldering irons and guns which would linger too long on the soldering connection and to get high. This heat generally destroys the new cell .The only answer is to do as the battery stores do and use a flash soldering gun. The temperature is high enough to perform good soldering but doesn't last long enough to destroy the cell itself.
I have seen people buy the brand new cells and the heat destroys any cells that are exposed to the pencil's soldering iron's gun's heat whenever soldering is used.
The cell becomes ruined due to the temperature.
I'd be very wary of somebody who attempts to join these types of cells by a conventional soldering iron or soldering gun.
You are likely to destroy the new cell
However the SOLDERING would work great and is easy if you have the calibrated exacting flash soldering electronic device that the stores have.AND THE BATTERIES ARE NEW!
      Using a pencil solderer,
Its heat is very high and can solder well .But the length of time the heat is used to melt the solder, the greater risk there is to destroy the battery cell.

The nominal voltage of each of this cells is 1.2V, but the máx. Voltage is 1.5V (he says 1.4V), you múltiplo it by the amount of cells in the battery pack (I think there were 15), and since they are connected in serial you get a reading of 21V

The Heat of a soldering gun or iron may very well destroy the batteries. Professional battery replacement establishments use of very rapid flash welding in order not to injure the batteries. I would not risk using the method you described.

This man was very skilled with his solder and did not hurt the batteries.

No matter which, the process works for both. NiMH are better however, just don't ever replace NiCd cells with NiMH cells unless changing ALL of them at once, they do not charge properly otherwise. If you have TWO NiCd batteries and BOTH are sort of charging but not fully, replace ALL the NiCd cells in ONE battery with NiMH and hopefully find enough GOOD cells in total to make another good battery of NiCd cells. I have done this several times on all sorts of drills with pretty good success. Even if you are one or two NiCd cells short you can just buy a few new ones.
I have even converted old 12v NiCd batteries to 18V NiMH batteries (of the same case type) with great success.
There is a great video on RUclips of a guy (Russian I think) who does a superb job of replacing NiCd cells with Lipo cells in a Bosh drill, including power check meter built in! That's MY next project. Do a search for it.

Sometimes repairing something is replacing the part that doesn't work.
If your vacuum cleaner belt breaks, you still call it a repair when you replace the broken belt with a new one. You don't actually have to repair the broken belt to call it a repair
