OMG WQOOHOOOOOOO FINALY FIGURED THIS CRAP Problem with the non selecting out after 2hours of Fiddling with settings and boxes. RIGHT PEOPLE! :D. Select a sphere in materials window > Click Blinn Basic Parameters (click the grey box on the right of 'Diffuse' > Select your material from the list (you should have already saved your material to the library), click Ok and now click the 'Assign Material to Selection' icon under all the spheres (third from left) and click 'Show Standard Map In Viewport' (fourth icon from the right) and EUREKA!!!! sometimes a struggle is good. Makes the reward so much sweeter haha. Hope this helps others. GL : ]
@AnchorheadMedia The top button on the right coloumn next to the sample windows lets you display your material as spheres, cubes or cylinders. What people use is just a personal preference and doesn't affect the material at all
Great job on the videos, they're teaching me everything i know about 3ds and its helping a lot. But did anyone else notice you were able to right click in this video? I thought it was freezing your recording the the rest of the videos. Just a random thought, keep up the awesome work :)
@WithLoveFromKay Press "M". In the upper left corner of the window that pops up, there is a button called "Modes". Click on it, then click on "Compact Material Editor". You should be fine and have the same as in the video.
Why can't i apply any material? I can apply self made colors but when i try to use a material from the material list, i can't press the "Assign material to selection" button, nor drag it. Help please.
OK this is very helpful and you present it in a very clear manner, but I have a question. I found that I am able to apply different colors to my object using the way you've shown, but when I use the same method with textures, i.e. 'Noise' (as you have picked) and others, such as 'Wood', the object remains the same. Is there a different method for applying textures? Appreciate your feedback, tks!
I haven't seen all the tutorials yet. But I'm wondering if this program has a "bone" animation technique. It's where you have skinny pyramid lines and you can move them around to control a kind of skeleton thing. When you render it out, the skin comes out on top.
can you help me, please ...i must apply a material in only one side of the Plane (standar primitive) ( as a page with an art in one side and white in other one, but it's look impossible...i did tried a bunch of things, but no sucsses.
@pijanykrolik hey i gut my image how do I set it as my backgroup (as refrence only), not appling it to a object, i dont even have an object yet i just wana put in in my background, any idea ??
Hey newboston, good job! a question: How do you move an object from a specific point in the object to say the endpoint or a corner of another object? Like in architecture, we have to move a wall from one of its corners to the corner of another wall. thank you
@thenewboston I'm using 3ds max 2013 and i went to material editor. I picked one of the default thingies and selected noise. Then i added custom textures for the a and b colors. Now I can't seem to apply it to anything because the options are shaded and not letting me click on them. I can't drag and drop, i can't apply to selection, or put it to the scene. I really need to texture the planes I'm working with otherwise they look to CGI being only one color. Can you help? ~Thanks
@soloshockMedia There are 2 views. I was confused by this myself. But you go to modes >> compact view. He is using compact view, and 2012 has the other view on by default.
Hi, when I try to drag and drop the material to my object, it doesn't allow me, my cursor turn into the small grey box with a little black circle and a line through it. Please respond so I can fix this quickly. -Thanks
my "assign material to selection" button is greyed out when I try to apply a material from the "get materials" button. I'm trying to make a handle with a wooden texture, how to I assign it?
Hey, is there any chance how i can transfer JUST the material settinggs from material #1 to another one (material #2) and overwrite so an existing material (#2) from the scene in one or two clicks (instead of always use find selected materials and re-apply the desired material to them .. that method is working but quiet annoying and takes ages ... Thx
Right this has pissed me off so badly now. I have a BMP file of a snake skin tile (offset it in Photoshop)I want to apply to a sphere. I have saved it to the Materials library and I find it under 'Material' > 'Get Material' > [Tick] Mtl Library (first option on my list), double click it so it shows on the selected material sphere (which it does) and try to click and drag....nothing happens. I try to click 'Apply to Material Selection' icon (third from left right under all the spheres) and STILL nothing. I'm at my wits end. Was REALLY motivated to get some work done today but Googling this problem has solved nothing :[
lol, Any of the tutorials you make , make all others look like cr@p (no offense others... but..) . Nice job. Makes me feel more confident and less confused.
Hey there "thenewboston" i have a question: i use Zbrush 3.1 , when i export the .OBJ file from 3d max to Zbrush and edit it and all , etc.. i have to make a "normal" map with it , so it can work on 3d max , however when i export it to 3d max and load the .OBJ file it already comes with the normal map on it , but the normal map is more "pixelized" why? , and how can i avoid that?
I need help. I have 3ds max 2012 and im trying to add metals to my object but theres no metals on my maps in material editor. i looked it up on help and it only shows matels in meterial/map browser if currently active render supports it. also i cant find mental ray and dont have any thing for autodesk meterial liberary. can someone help me please.
I need some help guys! I made a rectangle and then I extruded one of it's corner top faces to make a wall. I applied texture on it using material editor. But while having the texture ok on the floor, the texture on the wall is very stretched.. what should I do?
I have checked out many tuts on this, none of them very helpful. One major issue and difference is I do not have that 'Blinn Basic Parameters' section available, where the Diffuse option is. Really annoying. I am using 3ds 2014. Anyone know why I do not get that damn section in my material editor?? Or anyone know a tut vid that starts from the beginning, showing me everything to do to set this up? All of these videos appear to be for ppl already relatively fluent in 3ds. My skills after only 2 weeks of use are not that advanced.
im having a problem here n it freaken me out i keep opening my material editor n click on the get material button but when my material/map browser shows up but my side options are not showing and all i see are the default materials and maps standards . can someone plz tell how to fix it
Standard menu: Rendering menu > Material Editor > Compact Material Editor Enhanced menu: Materials menu > Create/Edit Materials > Compact Material Editor

Hey guys, do you like my profile pic? :3
When I drag and drop my materials onto my objects, they don't change colour in the viewport. It only shows when it is rendered.
VLunarFangV Make sure the "Show Shaded Material in Viewport" option is activated in your Slate Material Editor.
I have that activated and still no response on my objects, is there a setting I'm missing?
if you wanna assign "noise" to the selected object. how do u do it? it doesnt work with mine :S
@pijanykrolik I am reading your comment right after I figured that out lol. Thumbed up.
