bought my first banjo a few weeks ago largely because of JD. Specifically his performance on “I’m on my way back to the old home” on BGAB volume 1 immediately blew my mind. I think he is just the most tasteful bluegrass banjo player. The tone, the note choice, most importantly the timing, it’s perfect bluegrass banjo playing to me. transcribe JD for bluegrass and Bela for everything else, that’s combo represents the same thing Scruggs did for older generations
Hoss you better study Earl first and foremost, then J.D. Bela can play the crap out of single string jazz type stuff. But he does not have the type of right hand to play bluegrass with.
@@EricEllis-b2m his right hand on white freightliner live in Japan is more impressive than anything JD or Scruggs did Bella just gets bored with bluegrass because it’s too restrictive for him, but he owns that too
@@rjmoney9 You have good bit to learn about bluegrass banjo playing. If it's that simple and boring why do you bother playing it? And I'd much rather hear Courtney Johnson play White Freightliner Blues. I would rather hear a groove player than some one that just tries to see how many notes they can get in.
@@rjmoney9 Ignorance? You're more than likely one those guys that can barely play a roll. And about as big a fool as the fellow that said Earl Scruggs wasn't a good banjo player by today's standards. You talk a big game.
Fabulous. We were so lucky to see Tony with JD many times back in 1974/1975. The NY Times article inspired me to look for some of this music. I just downloaded the New South album on iTunes. Hope they both see some royalties from it.
I didn't realize how close lonesome river bands version was to this. this band was all about the groove, man. who's grooving like this right now? I gots to know.
I really like the ending. Tony is a beat late on his G-run, and then JD copies that mistakes just after, causing everybody to break down laughing! THAT's funny!
Sweet. Possibly the only version of this song that I like. Might have something to do with Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs, JD Browe and the boys (is that Bobby Sloan on fiddle?). Awesome.
Sometimes I just listen to JD Crowe's amazing mastery of the banjo and weep softly.
Tough and hard to beat!!!
Ahhhh, the language called bluegrass! The mess up made it even more awesome!

Would someone be kind enough to tell me where to get the notes that Crowe is playing at the 2:23 Mark ?
He did something he seldom does, he slipped a little chromatics in there.
Its kind of a scale type banjo pickin.
