The Spider-Verse franchise is proof that we are not tired of superhero movies, we are tired of bad superhero movies.
yeah basically, Spider-verse just actually had emotional sincerity that it wasn't always trying to ironically undercut like the MCU does
Yeah everyone loves superheroes. Just when it’s done right
It’s a bad superhero movie….
@@deadschooled Literally everyone disagrees with you
@@CulturedDegenerate not everyone
This really shows that comic book fatigue isn’t really the thing happening, it just takes real passion that doesn’t feel like an algorithm made it.
This, and Guardians Vol. 3. We’re 2/3 right now. Hopefully The Flash can be 3/3 (highly doubt it so far).
this comment is literally a copy paste but i still agree
@@BerettaBoy211 thought I saw it somewhere, but the statement does need to be spread to get more awsome movies like this
@@Infinite_Ethan_03I mean I don’t think it’ll be awful , probably pretty good besides the batflash suit
We need quality over quantity. That's it
The water color backdrop of Gwen’s universe was so beyond beautiful damn they stepped up their creativity in art for this movie .
I am absolutely in love with the watercolour style of Gwens world.
the moment where gwen’s dad drew his gun and the watercolors perfectly described how he felt on the inside with the the warm color contrasting the cool blue, absolutely stellar.
I would love to see a Spider-Gwen origin story movie. That would provide so much more opportunity to utilize Gwen's mood ring visuals.
The ending credits was also beautiful.
The color changes were so emotive too! And when the colors started running together was really cool.
I really hope Across The Spiderverse gets nominated for best picture. The animation felt it came out in a Renaissance art museum
My farts are better than Karsten’s farts.
bro what the hell 💀
It won’t, it will be categorized for best animated feature but it won an oscar back in 2019
@@juanchoresultay2704 they should stop doing that though. Animated movies are just as good as live action ones and deserve the same respect
@@juanchoresultay2704 that's the thing, animation being limited to that category sucks ass.
First one was amazing but this one blew away my expectations of what an animated film could be! A must watch for sure
My farts are better than Karsten’s farts.

@@p-__I’d smell them both
close but 3d will never top ghibli imo
@@bennett4789 it’s a mix of 3d and 2d animation.
IMO if you watch the movie from the perspective that you are actually following Gwen's emotional arc things make a lot more sense and it makes the film feel much more complete.
If they had ended the movie on a Gwen moment then that might've come across more... wait did they end it on a Gwen moment? I can't remember the exact thing they ended on lol
@@minerman60101 I'd be hard pressed to reduce the ending to a moment of a single character, as it ends on multiple plot points. 1) miles does a lil lightning arc in his confrontation with himself as prowler
2) Gwen gets the true gang together
@minerman60101 Gwen's arc was the vehicle for this movie to find a solution for the trilogy, it ends focused on Miles' next predicament and the forces that gather to be there to help or hinder come the next part
now that you say that it makes so much more sense… and the fact that they were able to create an amazing plot for her too. I feel like we are stepping out of the bounds for wanting representation to now HAVING representation for women and girls, its really neat. And also how they are writing each character with their own story besides miles is amazing, I feel like they all connect and have their time to shine while still putting enthesis on miles story
If only they had actually structured the film that way. Pity
Saw it yesterday. It was a work of pure animated genius. I loved every frame, so much detail and style. Gwen’s painterly universe, the paper cutout feel of Spider-Punk. It’s pretty incredible what they can do to weave it all together into that massive web like they did. Cannot wait for Beyond.
Spider punks animations were blowing my mind
I saw the movie today. it was really good, and everything that you described here was literally what I would say. But that cliffhanger, though... :(
It makes me excited for Beyond the Spider Verse though.
If miles was written the way he was in into/across the Spiderverse years ago when he was created, he would’ve gotten so much more love. The turnaround for this character has been so great, it’s literally night and day. Really wish this was my introduction to him like it was for most people, and not the comics. People don’t realize how crazy it is to watch this be so great after years of miles not being written the best.
for real!!! so glad these movies (and the ps5 game to some extent) have really made him into an iconic and 3 dimensional character after his lukewarm introduction in the comics. kids are probably gonna grow up knowing his character just as well as peter parker and it’s so dope
So much of miles comic book personality was given to MCU Peter Parker that itsv kind of had to do something new with the character, which turned out to be for the best imo
This is what I also feel as a long time Miles fan. I love his original comics and they'll always have a special place in my heart. But the writing with him as a character could've been way better. Everytime I think of Miles, I think of how his character should've been like his movie counter part and his Insomniac version too. I really love how invested and passionate Miles is about protecting Harlem after getting to know them through the FNSM app, I love how Spider-Verse Miles is a person who loves music and is a very talented artist as well as an exceptionally bright young man who is sadly burdened with being Spider-Man preventing him from going far.
I love both versions of Miles in the movies and in the games. His comics have been exceptionally better since Bendis has stepped down as his writer and currently his new run is just really good and *SO MUCH BETTER* than Peter's run at the moment. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who's looking to get into Miles's comics!
@@cowboysonfilm That's what I love about these movies and the games. People will grow up with Miles as they're Spider-Man since they know who he is and how much of a great character he is. That and he's far more relatable than Peter at the moment.
Agreed. Miles is my favorite Spider Man.
super cool video! another thing I noticed is how miles saying “bake two cakes” to have your cake and eat it too lines up so well with the rest of the movie, from the two cakes he brings to the party for his dad to the overall theme of trying to save everyone
oh wow this is a great catch. love how much detail there is in these movies, the rewatch-ability is CRAZY
FACTS I saw that too. It’s like the writers had the theme written out on a giant billboard in front of them the entire time, and they kept thinking about how they can make all the dialogue situations reflect that theme
I was so sucked in I never realized over two hours had passed. Felt so surreal, haven't felt this way about a superhero movie in a long long time.
Same! When the movie ended I was so sad. I can't wait for Beyond The Spider-Verse!
If this doesn’t get a best picture nomination then we know for a fact that no other animated film will come close for years, this is the chance for real change at the oscars imo.
i really hope it gets best picture, not just best animated picture
Idk dude. I haven’t taken the Academy seriously for years. But if they acknowledge this movie, I just might
@@kairinaminemix Same man
Oscars hate animation and relegate them to the kiddie corner, so this movie won't be anywhere near that prize.
The first one didn't, and this one probably won't either despite it being genuinely incredible as a film in the technical sense. It'll most likely still get best animated picture tho
As a Spot fan, I was very happy with what they did with his character, and how they made him as funny, sympathetic, and threatening at the same time
Average Spot enjoyer 🗿
He became SO creepy and I loved it. Wanted to see more of him but he kinda fell off at the end of the movie..
Just wait until the third movie…
Something abt ASTV just made me think “they love animation” from the story to the style and each frame of animation made me just so happy to be an artist while watching it. Miles story is just so relatable right now and watching that in one of my favorite mediums and one of my favorite superheroes it’s just AUGH god
I'm going to be honest, I really liked this one, but I still enjoyed the first one just a tiny bit more. I have a feeling they really wanted PT1 and PT2 to come out as one long movie but that would've been basically impossible, and I'll probably enjoy PT1 a lot more once PT2 is out
My farts are better than Karsten’s farts.
That is actually what happened lol, the writers said they had a lot of ideas for just one movie
Completely agree, this movie felt a little underwhelming because of that, but I can't wait to see part 2 and judge the series as a whole.
Atsv felt like a whole setup for the next film beyond the spiderverse will be like 2hrs of climax and epicness. It might be the most insane movie of all time
@@danielkamalingin2322 I agree, I think the next one has potential to be the best superhero movie ever made honestly. They just have to not fuck it up.
yesss, that’s the one thing people haven’t been talking about enough with this movie is how hilarious it is. the humour felt so natural and real, had me laughing out loud
just curious, which part had you laugh out loud? I broke a slight chuckle when they introduced spot but nothing in the movie was quite as funny as the first, which is disappointing because it easily had over twice the number of jokes in it
Fr it's all in the little details, not just the memes. The gag of Spot and Miles jumping in the background while his parents' are at the school counselor's office, him not counting until 3 against Webslinger, him fumbling in bad Spanish that causes Miguel to give us the driest "que maravilla" (which is funny in its own right, Miguel himself has a lot of hilarious moments because of his Straight Man's reaction to whatever nonsense the Silly Man facing him does (it can be Lyla, Gwen, Peter B...)), the Spot himself is super funny as well (which makes his transformation into an Eldritch Creature of Time and Space all the more terrifying by contrast)... It's not just the memes in this movie, but also the way the characters interact and react to each other and the world around them. The jokes aren't in-your-face like they do in too many Super Hero movies now (which made me stop watching such movies because I dislike bad/forced comedy that tries too hard to make me laugh).
Miles makes me love being black and speaking Spanish so much !Hes such good representation for black and Latino people. His Jordan’s , where’s he’s from, his family , everything. I got chills from every part of the movie. And the end when he met himself ( with a Puerto Rican accent jaja) it was so fire. Love him so much ! Best multiverse movie and I love Wanda lol.
Such a celebration of black culture in particular, I'm not black and I hate the identity politics of replacing arielle or whatever with a black character, but Miles is just so relatable and organic and original, it's amazing.
@@fancywrong6405 I believe he’s good representation of Afro Latinos like myself and agree that everything is organic. He really shows the world what we experience and see around us. Also the little mermaid was amazing , Halle did a amazing job
@@fancywrong6405 I feel like identity politics is important for representation in media.
I thought it was weird that his mother spoke Spanish all the time, like everyone knew they were Puerto Rican…

@@iluvtonyhawk nice man!
Interstellar is my favorite movie of all time and this creeped up to top 3.
That final long shot of Miles and Gwen sitting rightside up looking off at upside down New York. That was the first time in ages I've audibly gone "woah" while watching a film lol. And then it happened like 5 more times as it went on.
Whether or not you agree, a 4.68 average is an insane feat for an animated movie.
The shoot to the top of the Letterboxd 250 is just... bonkers
Ehh it's mostly recency bias. Not particularly uncommon for new movies that get a lot of hype to temporarily shoot up the list at first when all the people most excited for it watch.
@@alexjohnson6192 Ya I had the same thought. It’s still going to have a high rating, but I suspect it’ll bump down to a 4.4-4.6 in a couple of months/years. I’ve also noticed the first movie has gone up in average rating after the second was released.
@alexjohnson6192 It isn't recency bias, that's not how LetterBoxd works. It's not like it's gonna be at 4.7 then randomly drop to a fucking 3 in 5 months.
@yqco6 Yeah, it went from 4.4 - 4.5, that's why I think AtSV won't drop. It'll stay at a 4.7.
Recency and CBM bias
This film is likely going to floor every single other movie this year artistically, and it will still only get a single nomination for best animated picture at the Oscars. Guillermo Del Toro said it best: “Animation is a medium, not a genre.”
I am actually pretty confident, that "across the spider-verse" will be nominated for best screenplay, best music and best picture (and is obviously going to win best animated feature). Music especially seems like a likely win, the score is just mindblowingly good.
As someone who enjoyed the cameos (but does not condone yelling in a theatre) i wanna say the fanservice is the best way for the writers to nod to all of the material and history that makes projects like these possible. It's the writers extending a hi-five to the fans for their shared excitement about the characters and worlds; and i think that's very important.
the first movie changed my life, and this one did it again. by the time the third one comes out we will have by far the greatest trilogy cinema has ever seen. remarkable film.
Spoilers
Went in thinking Spider Punk was gonna be an annoying romantic rival for Miles. I never would’ve expected him to be the actual coolest person in the film. He’s the only one trying to help Miles.
when miles was getting extremely upset at everyone and hobie encouraging him was great
yeah I thought they were gonna do the "romantic rival" trope or have him turn out to be kind of like Killmonger in Black Panther where he's arguably morally right but then they have him do nonsensically evil things
i'm surprised you praised the voice acting without mentioning oscar isaac as miguel o'hara. casting live action celebrities in va roles is kind of a hit or miss, but he did such a good job portraying miguel's viciousness and increasingly tenuous self-control
This film is a pinnacle of animation, what an accomplishment to the team of 1000+ animators that worked on it! Definitely the best understanding of the spider man character to date as well!!!
the scenes when Spot is talking about his background & everything turns black & white is so so hauntingly stunning, def what impressed me the most
since the fanbases seem to collide a lot have you seen arcane? it's kinda the other animation media on par with spiderverse quality-wise. Would love to hear about it
Hailee Steinfeld is also in that.
@@jonathaneilbeck2263 gonna make a playlist called "movies where Hailee stienfield plays an emotions damaged character in a beautifully animated piece of art"
I think he's mentioned it in a video before. Can't wait for S2 whenever that is
Ah, two of my favorite works of film/TV.
@@payt00n Spoilers for ATSV
the scene at the start where gwen walks away from her bandmates was so so Vi Arcane
there's this one scene of spot where the animation is so sublime and unexpected that it just made me cry. i couldn't believe movies could look like that but they do and it was happening right in front of me and i felt overwhelmed by emotion and teared up. mind you, that happened in the span of like three seconds.
I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, it’s just such a breath of fresh air to have an animated movie this creative and artistic
I had a feeling this movie wouldn’t disappoint and wow was I right. The scene where Miles is talking to his mom and she ungrounds him… such a simple scene but carried so much emotion in it in such a beautifully subtle way. Voice acting was great, art work was great and slightly more daring, the focus of the movie was never lost…. Just an over all enjoyable time. The twist in the end was not what I was expecting which feels amazing, not being able to predict how it ends. In hindsight, maybe it should’ve been obvious but the set up was so to the point that any clues to the twist went right over my head.
Watching the sequel right after rewatching the original really made it a fulfilling experience. It reminded me how groundbreaking that first film was and the heart behind. Seeing both Gwen and Mile's journey continue here just made me feel so proud of them. Thank god for Phil Lord and Chris Miller!
Man I'm hoping one of my theaters just does all the films back to back whenever beyond comes out, it might change the entire perspective.
I love how each versions of Earth has its own distinct vibe. Peter B's has straight hatchings, Miles' has dot shadowing, Gwen's amazingly beautiful watercolours, and my fav aside from Gwen's because it's so discreet yet awesome characterisation: Nueva York being eco-brutalist on the surface and a full-on Blade Runner nightmare under, as well as Miguel's having details that match with architectural/industrial design and that's brilliant to add characterisation without saying anything (in Miguel's case, it helps show his methodical/technical approach to things. Also the intensive use of straight lines and illusions of symmetry on his costume, combined with his build, makes him incredibly intimidating right from his first second on screen, I love it)
Absolutely loved this movie, first time in an entirely packed theatre in a while and I also didn't have a huge excitement for it cause I was scared it was going to be bad or not have as good a plot, but I was so happy with the movie. The animation, characters, everything. Favourite new addition was SPider-Punk, loved him. First time in ages people actually clapped when the movie was over.
Just came back from watching the movie and I gotta say, Spot has to be one of my favourite villains and I really wished he was a larger part of the second half of the movie. He's not trying to be complex, no expected sympathy due to a sad backstory, really funny, amazing design and he goes from being a joke to being extremely dangerous and you really feel the danger he is as the movie goes on. My only disappointment was that he appeared less in the second half as the movie goes on to talk more about multiverse. I would say the movie might be trying too much but since there's a part 2, I honestly can't say it's a flaw yet and I'm excited to see what they will do with him.
Love how Miles and Pavitr call out people’s mistake. Pavitr calling out people who call Chai, Chai Tea and Miles calling out people saying ATM machine even though the M in ATM stands for machine already 😭
Why did I get this video notification literally as I was looking at Karsten’s Letterboxd rating of this movie?
My farts are better than Karsten’s farts.
Agreed on the to be continued bit… this movie had full circle moments with all our main characters and it’s a perfect set up for the final installment.
Glad im not the only one who noticed the sound mixing was very quiet, I saw it again in a dolby theater because i just wanted to see it again but also because i wanted to hear that sound. Must say it is a night and day difference.
I'm hearing about several people experiencing on this on twitter. I wonder if it's an issue with certain copies of the film being sent to screenings, the theater themselves or is it on on the sound mixing department.
@@themadtitan7603 i've heard a lot of complaints specifically about the IMAX mix, and i can agree some dialogue is just way too quiet compared to the booming music / sound effects, although it was mostly relegated to the first half of the movie (i watched it in IMAX)
the only problem i have with this movie is that i cant get enough of it, and i want more now 😩
I know a lot of people didn't like the slow start, but honestly the first half was my favorite part of the film. The second half, while still being really good, just feels very mediocre in terms of characterization and story. The first half also felt more dynamic in how they mixed artsyles, while the second half just felt like pretty much the same animation from the first film.
It's less of a slow start more of a slow middle. The opening scene and then the scene with the vulture were out of control.
That's a take. I loved both the first and second half equally
Mediocre is a very strong word, but I can see why someone would prefer the first half.
I think middle part is probably the weakest part while the Miguel vs Miles and the Earth 42 stuff is some of the strongest Spider-Man content ever.
I’m perplexed by these slow beginning/middle comments because I only realized two hours had passed when my ride texted me asking if the movie was almost over.
I didn’t like the art style in the beginning but I did like Gwen and miles reunion.. the second half was def the best part to me
I’m glad you said something about the sound mix! I had the hardest time understanding dialogue during action scenes
i was waiting for your review :)
I think this is easily the best piece of animated media I’ve ever had the pleasure to watch and no doubt one of my favorite movies ever, utterly amazing
I know this might sound really left field, but I just came from watching across the spider-verse. I have to say.
Miles's mom doesn't seem a day after 30 years old, and I don't know why.
That's a fine latino mom for you:)
cant believe you left us on a cliffhanger in this review too
they basically alley-oop'd themselves with this film, if the next film is as good (let's be honest it will be) they'll have the perfect trilogy
Great review Karsten! As someone who hasn't been connected to comic book movies in the past decade besides the Spider-verse, i can really relate to your feelings in how this trilogy is doing things different
Spoiler Warning ⚠️
The writing of this trilogy is top tier and a perfect example of this is with the bagel Peter and Miles stole in the 1st film. I thought it was just a small joke the writers put in to lighten the mood, but it ended up playing a key role in creating one of the most powerful and fierce villains we’ll ever see in The Spot. I thought this was very clever and spectacular, and I hope in the future we see other films do something similar.
It's telling animation wise that my first thought after seeing this was 'I need to watch this frame by frame immediately.'
EVERY point you made in this summary analysis, I 💯 agreed with. I had the exact thoughts. 👌🏻❤️
was waiting for your video on this
Watched the 1st one when it came out and thought it was really good too, wasn't expecting much from this, had my doubts about changing the animation styles...but DAMN dude, it was MindBlowing. Overwhelming in the best possible way.
I wish Stan Lee could be alive to see this film.
I fucking loooooved it. As much as I desperately want more. I’m willing to wait because everything they have set up for the next one is SOO GOOOOOOD!!!
no matter what you think about the movie, we can all agree that this movie has changed the standard for big budget animated movies forever
The content is so good that it is impossible to miss a single video of yours 😘🥰
Best cliff hanger is a while. Got me so hyped for the next!
Beyond The Spider-Verse is about to be absolute peak animated cinema. Just look at how this movie is being called "2 hours of buildup" and is still getting incredibly high reviews. If they can do this good without even going into a real climax I can't even imagine how crazy Part 2 will get. This will go down in history as a perfect trilogy
In the UK, in my theatre no one errupted into screaming when a cameo happened nor pointing at the refrences and everyone was surprisingly quiet, and respectful.
Hell after the movie finished we all clapped simce we watched a piece of art.
The problem is that the multiverse is used as the main part of the plot instead of the general setting of where the plot is.
Here, it isn’t that the mutliverse is at stake and we need to save it. It’s that the multiverse isn’t the setting, and we need to save Miles’s dad.
Across the Spider-Verse heard the quote "Every Frame a Painting" and took that as a challenge.
This was an amazing movie. One of the best in my book. For the audio issue, though, I watched it at a theatre with iMax, and it sounded a bit loud at parts. It may be the mix for certain editions.
as far as the sound mix goes, i think it was your theatre. Where i watched it, it was nice n LOUD, and balanced, and crisp, and BOOMY
It’s so crazy you mentioned the sound editing! I thought it was just my theater and literally went as far as going outside and asking the theater to turn it up cause it was almost impossible to hear the dialogue at first… I wonder what happened with that.
So i manage a movie theater. We were sent an email from Lord and Miller that we needed to bump the sound up for the feature because of the way it was mixed. I have a feeling yours and his theater didn't do this
Miles really reppin' the exaggerated swagger of a black teen quite well.
I left the cinema feeling like an hour had passed and I just watched 5 episodes (the comic book titles really helped sell that feeling) but man, this was such a blast
I really liked how they didn't get hung up on the many versions and just kept their focus on the points that really mattered, and the worlds are amazing! The feelings that are painted on the background with every scene, the little jitters between art styles ✨
I do love how they made the concept of the multiverse extremely meaningful and teaches kids challenging morals. The love and care put into this visually and in the writing and directing is so apparent
I certainly can respect Karsten's criticisms on the overuse of multiverse and the over-abundant fan-service that accompanies it. However, when he talks about people who enjoy fanservice, he just talks down on them and insults them. Yea people being verbal in the theater is annoying, I want them to stfu too when that happens. But calling them man-children is just unnecessary and pretentious.
enjoying fanservice and shouting at an inappropriate time are two different things, and the latter is absolutely child behavior
It's more than just this video. So many times that fan-service comes up in videos, Karsten takes a moment to take a jab at people enjoying it. Like he's used the term man-children before just to describe the MCU's target audience. Notice I said I want the shouting ppl to shut up too.
im so glad you said was quiet. my brother and i were straining to hear the whole time. fucking awesome film tho - seeing again tmrw
You're a real man. Talking down on grown ups that have literally lived your life twice over for their excitement for easter eggs. Yes, you're the man.
YES!!! I personally don't see what critiques of the ending were getting at. The movie gives you a full arc of characters and a conclusion with more to look forward to. What more could you ask for?
Watching the Flash trailer before this movie made me realize how some studios seem to actually care about and flesh out the multiverse stuff instead of just using it as a cheap way of getting fan service, especially as a way to distract from the main actor for the movie being a literal war criminal…
I'm with letterboxd on this one. It's literally the best movie of all time.
Agreed Karsten, fan of first spiderverse but really didn't feel hype for this one until a week before it came out and im hanging up the poster and building thr standee like "*sigh*, this is gonna fantastic isn't it"
I also noticed how quiet it was! I thought it must have just been the theater I saw it in but now that you also mentioned it I wonder if it was the actual mixing!
The impact the Spider-verse films has had on the art world cannot be talked about enough. I took a concept art course the year after the first film came out and as a break-the-ice we were asked to introduce ourselves saying what our favorite movie was. Everyone said Spider-verse.
This year, Amazon put the pre-order for the art book for Into the Spider-verse HALF OFF leading up to the film. So many people pre-ordered it Amazon ran out of stock and started sending out "Hey do you still want this?" emails and many people who pre-ordered are only just receiving their copies in August.
Seeing films like The Mitchells VS the Machines, Puss in Boots: Last Wish and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem build on the phenomenal foundation Spider-verse laid has been incredible. I'm really hoping Pixar can catch the hell up because their story telling (esp with their recent trend towards AAPI stories) with style like this would be such a treat.
They put in the work and it shows!!
hi! i work at a movie theater and the issue with the sound mixing is because there was an issue with the copy that was sent to the theaters (the distributors weren’t very specific about it sadly) so it’s technically the movies fault but they know about it and might be trying to get a new copy sent out soon
Had the same issue with sound mixing. It was for me really hard to clearly hear what they were saying and i was not sure i was alone or whether it was the movie or the theater. It was a negative note for me
Just got out of my 5th screening - what a freaking AMAZING follow-up
It's been said that good time travel stories never use time travel as a solution, they use it as the source of the film's problems. I wonder if the same can be said about muliverse stories.
3:28 they used SO many more colours in each frame. That made the scenes so much more vibrant and alive-but the changing and melding art style quirks probably helps with the latter more.
There’s also new…. Just, THINGS, in the art and animation of this movie. What other animated movies has newspaper clippings make up the entirety of a character? What other animated movie includes little details that make the scene messier in such unique ways like the sketch skeleton on Spot? What other animated movie just starts changing the background and physics of the scene in such seamless and fitting ways?
Tbh I wouldn’t be surprised if they had to pull a Frozen and create new, quite advance software for animating some specific parts of the movie.
I am not someone that cries in films & this brought me to tears from the visuals so many times. I saw it the night before it came out in LA & I even met some of the voice actors who did little pick ups here & there. Everyone seems to proud of the film and there was so much excitement before/during/after w all ages. Right away we noticed it was quiet tho :( I saw the first one 3x in theatres & I’m omw to see it a second time now. Couldn’t have asked for more in a film ❤
I agree about the multiverse thing, it kind of made it feel like nothing had much significance in marvel movies, like characters could just come back, but in the new spider verse movie it felt relevant and the natural progression of that story so i didn’t mind it at all
Pulling for that Best Picture nom let's go Academy
I think it really says something about these movies that I only ever met ONE person who didn't like the first movie. And even then, I'm pretty sure it was largely, if not solely, because it was animated.
If that statement makes you feel irrationally mad, don't worry; I'm there with you,
see I finally got to see it yesterday (2 weeks after release) and I was the only person in my packed theater who recognized most of the cameos/references
New profile pic and new outro? Kartsen stepping his game up, I see.
As a standalone movie I think ITSV edges this one just barely but wow the animation in ATSV absolutely blew me away genuinely one of the most beautiful pieces of media I’ve ever consumed
been waiting for this one
One thing I think this film captures perfectly is that it feels like an event comic book. Bigger stakes and a sense of scale. Lots of moving parts and even the cliffhanger at the end is straight up how and event would go in the last stretch. They even do the advancing wall oblivion from Crisis on Infinite Earths which is a DC story and it's more Kirby crackle but the filmmakers did there homework.
Spider-Man India, Spider-Punk, & The Spot were my favorite characters. They stole the show every time they were on screen!
It’s rare that I’m impressed by a film. Dune was the last big budget film that really blew me away. It’s even rarer that a film gets under my skin. Everything everywhere was one of maybe fifteen to do so. It’s even rarer for a film to completely blow me away and change how I perceive filmmaking.
This does all of that and more. I’m genuinely in love with this movie in a way I never really have been. If they stick the landing with the third, this trilogy will rival the lord of the rings and Star Wars for GOAT.
4:56 ooh that’s a CLEAN matchcut
i truly did not believe there was a way they could have topped into the spider verse it was the most original, unique and creative movie i had ever seen and wow i could not have been more wrong. it’s a masterpiece
Great review, but you did Gwen DIRTY by not mentioning how much they put on her in this movie. She was great in the first movie, but this one seems to be almost equally about her than it is about Miles. There's so much pressure on Miles about "his story," but there's a TON of pressure on Gwen as well, which of course interplays with Miles' story, and it makes for some really engaging internal conflict and some great character moments.
omg i thought it was my theater that had a low volume in the beginning !!! we even asked them to turn it up lol
I didn’t know the movie had an abrupt cliffhanger ending going in, so seeing that “To Be Continued…” kinda landed like a wet fart at the end of the movie for me, but beyond that one incredibly minor grievance this movie might be a 10 for me. Like you said, every goddamn frame of this movie was beautiful.
I didn't mind the ending as much as it seemed others did - I'm with you in liking the ending & with it building anticipation for the third film.
