I was 14 in 1981. My oldest brother came home and played this record. I was fascinated by this song, and have always been since then. Fourty years ago that was. I missed my brother then and still miss him today. Being close to him, that's what I was looking for then and am still today. I lifelong yearning for being close to him. But I have understood that I will never get close to him as long as he and I live. This song reminds me so much of him, and of my yearning for being close to him. How I miss him.

I definitely subscribe to that future fantasy, the classic Sci-Fi film epic Blade Runner was made the same year ‘81/‘82 as Star Child and set in 2019. This song wouldn’t have been out of place alongside Vangelis synth masterpiece film score, it still sounds magnificent and contemporary in 2021

Of all their brilliant songs, this one song stands out as a very rare gem, it somehow captures their unique blend of pin sharp funky instrumentals that works perfectly with the dreamy melody and lyrics. Not so typical of the genre and period, with many songs laced with sleaze and corny macho attitude headlining the charts. The early Level 42 were much more than Mark King thumping out typical bass signatures, more than the typical Brit Jazz funk riff going over the top. They were a cracking band of master craftsmen until their snap and crackle got very soggy after drinking too much commercial pop.

Mark King....in addition to being one of the funkiest and best bass players on the planet Mark is an excellent drummer!
He actually started out on drums.
Later he moved from the Isle of Wight to London and got a job at a music store.
He played the guitar but told the store owner he played bass....which he actually did not at the time.
During the course of working, demoing gear for customers and practicing Mark became a superb bass player with an impeccable groove and feel.
Mark King also has a phenomenal vocal style....one of my favorite singers of all time.
I am putting together for my listening pleasure a compilation cd of various artists I’ve titled “Spaced Out....The Final Frontier” 🤣.....and Level 42’s “Star Child” definitely makes the list!
I really dig Mike Lindup’s singing with the spacey reverb.
Mike Lindup, Mark King, Boon Gould, Phil Gould and Wally Badarou sure to cook a spacey jazz/funk gumbo on Star Child.
I always love Level 42....great vibe and atmosphere!!!

I would watch the starlight in her face
'Cause I was reaching out to understand the cosmic charm
I am just a starchild born in space.
Way up high above the sky
    All that beauty passes by
    Whole worlds still unknown
    And out beyond the blue
There's a place for people too
It's time for us to go.
I have seen the sun shine bright in paradise
I have been there, I have seen it
Everywhere space people stare through ageless eyes
I have seen them, I believe it
    [Repeat chorus]
    We have time
    (In my dreams)
    Time and space
    While we're young
    (Floating free)
We can chase to the stars.
Searching for the magic in the universe
Guided by the stars that light my way
I have seen the sun shine bright in paradise
I am just a starchild born in space

I'm 40 years old I'm a huge fan of this band. As a young kid in the 80s I started watching MTV and VH1 when I was 3 and I just love all kinds of music from funk, pop, R&B, jazz. I grew up hearing my dad play sou, jazz, and funk music around the house.

They composed this MASTERPIECE at their 20s... maybe this is the best song. Or turn it on? Or love games? My dream is listening level 42 live in Italy. I continously Ask Mark King in every social to come here for a tour. Lots of italian people love this legendary band

Starchild and it's remixes were big in the NYC dance club scene. Mind you I was 16 in 81, but I had older brother who brought me in since he was a club rat/DJ who knew everyone and actually hung out with Madonna and Jellybean before they became famous. Great times...
