  • Another fabulous selection from Hot Rats, the second solo album produced by Frank Zappa done without the members of the Mothers Of Invention, except for Ian Underwood. "Son of Mr. Green Genes" is an instrumental re-arrangement of the song "Mr. Green Genes" from the Mothers' album Uncle Meat. The unusual title of this song led to an urban legend that Zappa was related to the actor who played Mr. Green Jeans on the television show Captain Kangaroo. Of course NOT, but the style of SECTIONS of the song does sound like a sentimental homage to the show, childhood, and the man in the green jeans who reminded us to eat our vegetables, especially the green kind! Was Mr. Green Jeans a possible inspiration for "Call Any Vegetable" besides?? Of course we'll never know for sure.
This video is a tribute to the children's show, to Hugh Brannum who played the friendly, knowledgeable farmer, and Captain Kangaroo (Bob Keeshan) ... a kind of psychedelic mashup, with a few vegetable surprises thrown in, including footage of Frank Zappa playing two out of the three extended lead guitar solos. So dig in ... and pass the asparagus!
Introduction with music and opening sequence between Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Green Jeans is from the show aired on July 22, 1961.

Always enjoyed this video. Thanks for "re-releasing" it. More Zappa from your extensive catalogue please, Mike.

Thanks Ross! Well, "Willie the Pimp" is forbidden on here. When I tried to upload it in July 2022, I IMMEDIATELY got a red warning light, a siren, and it was taken down on the spot and I got what remains as a Community Guidelines Warning. Of course I have a number of Zappa videos on here, but the views are very low. This one and the other Mr. Green Genes were two, so they are re-uploaded and the first uploaded ones from two years ago deleted. Maybe they will do better this time? So far, not so good. I uploaded "Brain Police" two years ago, it got next to no views, so I re-uploaded that one several months or so ago (or so it seems), but it still is not doing well. "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" has been up a long time now, and it is not making it. "Idiot Bastard Son" the same thing. A few others, same thing. Nobody seems to like my Zappa videos like they did back in the teens right up to August 2019. Just like they don't care for my Sharon Tate dedications or Marilyn for that matter, dance videos either. Nobody seems to like much of anything, regardless of how popular the videos were on my previous channel. Seems like a setup to me. Or Gen Z?? The Far Left? Cancel culture? Ageism? Just plain bratty a___h__es?

Captain Kangaroo was my favorite hosted kids show. The Mothers and Zappa were my favorites during high school. A perfect match-up!

Thanks! I actually remember the opening part of this episode. I was 7 years old.
