"Last Run" of The Eureka

- Before you comment here, did you read the description at all? At the time, this locomotive was not slated to ever get another FRA Inspection, therefore, it was to be the "last run", While things have changed since 2012 when this was shot and uploaded. In 2021, the Eureka would make her first trip outside of the Las Vegas area with a trip to the Cumbres and Toltec.
Disclaimer: While the "Eureka" may run again here or elsewhere, it may be a very long time before that happens. The locomotive is due for FRA (Federal Railway Administration) Mandated inspections. Without this, the locomotive can not run on railroads such as the Durango and Silverton seen here.
(Editor Note:: I hate the autofocus, this was all shot with a point and shoot camera with no focus adjustment, hence the camera lens movement.)
Video shot from The Eureka & Palisade #4's Southbound trip from Silverton Colorado to the isolated siding at Tacoma. This was shot on August 20, 2012. Our locations take us from the Silverton Depot, to the "Timber Bridge" on the outskirts of town. Farther South, we make stops at "King Mine", Elk Park, Needleton Tank, Tefft, and "Cement Wall" and finally take on water at Tank Creek.
ThisWould be the last trip of the Eureka In Colorado until 2021. In 2021 it returned to the Cumbres and Toltec to be part of its Victorian in Iron Horse Roundup. There is shared the stage with sister locomotive the Glenbrook, from the Nevada state railroad museum. Also in attendance were the Rio Grande Southern 20 From the Colorado railroad museum in Golden Colorado near Denver, Denver and Rio grande 425, and Denver & Rio Grande 168
Passed the 15 year FRA inspection spring of 2017. :-)
mathue taxion Source please? Is really wanna see
well that's a relief Dan markoff and his and his crew always do such a great job maintaining their private engine.
I'm not sure if this train can ever run on these track anymore as of 2021 because the other trains caused alot of forest fires killing ppl and lose of many buildings, companie that runs the steam trains being sued. I believe they converted all to oil burning , so this being a wood burning train may never be allowed to run on tracks ever again
Yeah that's bullshit no railroad has been sued for starting wild fires that is made up nonsense
@@jaysontadlock1871 your wrong, look it up!!! The rio grande rail company caused the 6 biggest fire in Colorado history!triggered thousands to evaluate and destroyed 54000 acres of land and economy took a 33 million dollar hit. Also the US attorney office filed another lawsuit to recoup more than 25 million spent fighting fire!!
Great locomotive, I'm always glad to see it out and about. Mr. Markoff has done a fantastic job keeping this piece of history alive. Hopefully, it will eventually return to the rails of D&S. Nice video.
Classic narrow gauge in the mountain west -- gotta love it.
The 1472 SDI (service day inspection) means that at a minimum the jacketing and lagging is removed from the boiler, the sheets are ultrasounded, the tubes are removed and tube sheets cleaned and inspected, calculations are done for boiler strength, boiler cleaned, new tubes installed, driving axles are ultrasounded, frame inspected. This is in addition to the normal annual inspection (mechanical inspection, boiler wash, hydro test, internal boiler inspection, tender inspection)
mikado1555 thank you so much for that information it's something that I new must have happened because of the safety reasons but I never knew the overview of the things that had to be done. Sounds like it's a lot of work
I wonder how much of this is honestly needed for safety and how much is BS.
Well, considering the age of most of these locomotives and the potential consequences of negligence as we learned in 1994 with the CP 1278... it's better to be safe than sorry.
Hehehehee, time for a speed run!
baritonebynight
It's all very much safety oriented. Aviation maintenance regimens are borrowed directly from railroad safety protocol.
Beautiful track, just what I think of when I think of classic American railroads.
We plan on visiting during our Summer 2022 Western trip. The plan is northern NM and southern Colorado. Should be a nice drive from New Hampshire.
Why does it ring it's bell constantly while going down the track in open country? I thought the bell was only used around the station where people are?
A wonderful, beautifully shot film!
Thank you for saving her and posting this video.
Great video, William. Thanks for posting.
2:45 Guy in overalls gets beamed up!
Kinda ruins the transition, but it’s better than the “dead air” between movement.
@@Big_Diehl .
I connect with this train as well as the location.
Colorado kid who became BG McCoy's DCC at Nellis.
Had no Idea of his love of this until after he passed and I saw a few photos on his FB Page.
Much history and more memories of better days.
The smoke stack on that engine is designec to be a spark and cinder arrester. Just anout all the wood burning engines working in the woods had one.
Can't wait to see this locomotive! The 4-4-0 American type is my favorite loco
My favorite is the 4-2-2 number 123 ruclips.net/video/_0R8uERY-Yk/видео.html
Sadly my favorite will likely never move again
Great job Bill!
A true treasure. The wood-burning 4-4-0 locomotives were what opened up the wild west. To have one still in this day operational is truly priceless. Many have said that the risks involved with actually using this engine for excursions is pure folly due to it's rarity.
I express my condolences to Mr Markoff as he won't be able to run his beloved locomotive for at least 2-3 years
Great video of a classic engine.
Bill Beverly jkjmmmm uhhgonhh. Bbbbvv
See the Eureka together with the Glenbrook August, 2020. Information here: cumbrestoltec.com/50th/roundup-of-victorian-iron-horses/
she will be back
Dan Markov restored the little engine in his garage in 6 short years, so I'm sure he can have the locomotive up to par with FRA in another 6 short years. :)
Chris9017 I heard it passed inspection last year
Somebody should send Jeff Besos a model train.
5:25 could almost be a snap shot in time for when the train, the track and bridge were first built
It is now 2021, and the Eureka has run on the C&TS recently
Yes…. As it’s been outlined in the video’s description for years now, things changed since this video was made
It's a shame the chances of this engine returning to D&S is very unlikely now because it only visited for the railfest events which stopped being held after 2013. Not t mention the fire dangers with the fleet being oil fired now. I think it's fair to say, that the chances of Eureka retrying to this place is very slim.
Yes, very much. You don't get the colors and paint jobs on others like you do on the old wood burners.
mine to there cool lookin
Whats with the constant clanger?
Guess what? It's running again! Toy Man Television has a few recent videos about it.
Trainzguy 2472 Hold up, really??
@eclemensen I didnt know that. I know it was running more recently but I havent seen it that much.
2:40
Where am I
Am I alive
Is this the 1900s
Is the Needleton water tank back in operation?
I've watched a million videos of engines, but lately I've seen several of Eureka, and these are some of the best videos on this subject I've seen. Don't know what makes them so much better, exactly; it must be someone who really knows the art just stands out that way. What do others lack?
Is the FRA deal that bad? What takes so long? The repairs? I'm sure flue tubes and sheet thickness is part of it, but what else?
Eureka is a late-model replica, right?
Why the last run? What's wrong with this beautiful locomotive? Loot at it (1:45), a reminds you of old west and James Stuart.
It's time on its Form 4, and at the time of the video and this run (2012), the owner, Dan Markoff was not going to take on the task of doing it. Since then, he's changed his mind and it has been re-certified for another go around
Sad to hear that it is gone
I wonder what you have to do to get permission to run your locomotive on this railroad?
This ended up not being its last run
As well mentioned in the video description
@@Big_Diehl yeah I know that and its said that the eureka will be heading to the cumbres and toltec sometime this year
so why isn't this loco gonna get another FRA inspection?
She got one and came back to Colorado in 2021 on the Cumbres. A video for another day!
@@Big_Diehl yay When do she get her mandatory rebuild again?
Why is this the last run. Explain please. Thanks 🙏
Ronald Stephens the original reason why is still in the initial description
Love that engine but geeze that guy needs to lay off the bell
Why ring the bell all of the time? How annoying!
athopi cus
The bell is rung whenever the engine is operating in the presence of people, particularly at stations.
They may be "over-doing" the bell ringing specifically to enhance the experience.
In station area I understand, but along the route, going over trestles? Ridiculous...
I suspect that the folks who paid $$$ to ride behind the Eureka specifically asked for "All the Bells and Whistles". When I was an apprentice motorman on Galloping Goose #4 on its one and only trip on the D&S, I didn't over use the signals. Although, when approaching road crossings I did make lots of noise.
Stop ringing the damn bell!!!!
I really hate those stupid bells on US locos, they drive me up the wall. What is their purpose anyhow ? the loco whistle should suffice as a warning.
stop ringing the fucking bell
