God, he is zombie drunk. I used to drink myself into that state / had to deal with people in that state. Seeing Nate have to try to navigate that situation on stage... my heart goes out to him.

@@IndyLiveMusic congratulations: I had a psychotic break where my minor psychosis (I am the son of a schizo cult leader you have heard of so I am terrified of hearing voices) turned to full fledged music/choral/chant and shit like "i have witnesses" and all of this other stuff, and I thought it was ... nah, you guys think I am crazy, but that is because I am. anyway. I decided to stop being a mean person for it, and I am a month clean from fentanyl. never thought I would quit it. My foot ulcers are already fading. "you are missing your audience with conor oberst" is what I heard while my first therapy meeting was occurring.
I think drugs made me more selfish and isolated than I ever could have imagined and I hurt a lot of people. I thought not interacting and living in my own world made even lyrics mean different things and my own words, the words of others suddenly seem less hostile. If you go around feeling like you're a piece of shit, you might look, act and smell like one... you will certainly talk like one.
Anyway, if you are still sober,. cool. If not, now is the time, or maybe not. Just be nice to yourself because someone loves you.

I see a lot of people commenting under these saying “I would never pay to go to one of these shows!” I’ve seen them twice over the past year. Once, he was pretty shitfaced and slurring his speech and sort of out of it. The other was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, and he seemed completely sober. The latter show was only a few days before this one. It’s a gambit, but if you love Bright Eyes to the extent I do, it’s definitely worth risking a rough show when the great shows are truly fantastic.
With that being said, I definitely hope that Conor can get better, it’s hard to see someone who has done so much for me through his music like this.

Nothing like the extreme sense of miserable self indulgence by which one can lose themselves to self loathing in a very difficult to balance catharsis. All of it is playing with fire and oddly undermines the danger in the decay of one's ability to even identify the existential complications that can leave one empty and confuse the mind with dopamine floods of imagining one's own tragedy. The ones who balance it and can create boundaries and maintain live quite a diverse array of narrative that isn't contained in the fictional presentation of subjectivity and the big other who will eventually weigh you down with their gaze as you try to resolve your embarrassment reduced to a amygdala desperate for self preservation trying to hide from the one who observes you always. You'll project your insecurity and grow contemptuous of anything and anyone, especially those who try to accommodate you because they can't make you love yourself. I think.
I don't know man. I am just some schizophrenic cult leaders son who lost themselves to trying to not be a failed musician like their father and now I kind of have no identity but negative space and second guesses. Having to put that on display and have people pay me for it would be a fucking disaster. Thank goodness I privately let the feedback loop concentrate the disappearing self.

Gimme a fuckin break man! Are any of you familiar with his catalog of work? Bands argue and people who struggle with mental illness self medicate. He's played better and he's played worse. He's still a once in a generation lyricist and incredibly prolific. Cut him some slack. I saw the show in Missouri the next night and thought I was a great show despite any imperfections with the set. Once upon a time that was part of the appeal.

@@CW0123 What's gatekeeping? They're just saying that so much of the music is about being angry, depressed, and getting super fucked up so if you listen to it why would it be surprising that his shows get messy ?

    • @aaronperrin3661
      @aaronperrin3661 10 месяцев назад

I guess maybe I'm guilty of gatekeeping to people who haven't struggled with those particular problems. I'm just saying if you can't understand his art then it's probably not for you, and if you're put off by a show where he's clearly shit faced then he also probably isn't for you. Save you're money and go see someone else. Save the seats for fans... Of which there are still many. It's past your bedtime anyways.

      @@morganghetti
I’ve seen Bright Eyes 50+ times, at Sokol Underground with about 20 people around 2000 for a surprise show, at The Holland Center, at Memorial Park, at Scottish Rite Hall, and have been to his house a couple times with friends who are close to him.
I don’t know Conor myself, though.
That said, I’ve never seen him like this during the times I’ve seen his shows.
He wasn’t this bad until after Phoebe Bridgers and him seemed to go their separate ways.
Yes, she helped him remaking a couple of songs from Fevers & Mirrors last year, but they used to be together all the time for a couple years.
I don’t know if they had a relationship, and decided to part, or if they were just friends. Either way: If you look at The Tiny Desk from 2019, where Better Oblivion Community Center performs a few songs, Conor looks happy and healthy and at ease.
But something happened after that. Either it’s because she moved on, or perhaps something else happened unrelated to Phoebe -- maybe the pandemic took its toll.
Whatever it was, it happened after 2019.
My theory is that Phoebe and him were “together,” and one or the other decided to not commit, or to move on. Either way, I think it has something to do with that.
But I may be completely wrong.
I honestly hope he’s eventually alright, and that things even out for him.
