How does the AF compare to the previous models in terms of confidence when pulling from one subject to another? I ask as they've switched from hybrid PDAF + CDAF to contrast-based AF alone. Does it overshoot or wobble when the subject distance changes, like in a product showcase? Thanks!
The product showcase is bad. It uses a small center box and forces it vs the big frame on the Z-V1. So it's constantly wobbling between your chin, chest, nose, etc. Do not recommend that mode on this camera. Eye detection works well. Moving from one object to another by panning or moving focus point is decently smooth and more confident than competing contrast systems, but it's not perfect and there is some hesitation and overshooting. But that product showcase mode is so bad on this camera. If you watch DPReview's video around the 8 minute mark, you can see what I mean.

They need to make the X3000 with a better mic, way cheaper. That is what people want. Fun, and cameera that works amazing. They KNOW THIS ALREADY !!!
I honestly think that whoever decides to upgrade from a Smart Phone to a Point and shoot camera as the sony will definitely pick the ZV-1 over the ZV-1F . Even if it is cheaper I doubt it will be an appeal for many people in 2022/2023. It is already outdated and it doesn't offer enough, Sony should've worked on improving the zv-1 not limiting it .

Thank y'all for this review! I'm a professional artist who does realism pencil/charcoal drawings and watercolor paintings. I'm currently looking at the Pixel 7 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro to use for talking head videos/time lapse videos of my artwork for RUclips. I'm still indecisive, but leaning towards the Pixel 7 Pro because of it's color accuracy. However, I plan to use the back camera of the phone. If y'all or anyone has any helpful input for me, I would greatly appreciate it!
Regarding that jittery wobble: You can even see that perfectly at 20:37 - The light bars are jittering all over the place. Looks like the stabilization (optical or digital) is kicking in way too hard to compensate for " shaky hand".
Clearly cameras at $500 will disappear in a year or two as phones continue to improve. I expect the technical prowess of the Samsung S23 to be incredible, officially sounding the death knell of “budget” point and shoot cameras
disagree - ill tell you why - I don't want to use my phone as a dedicated camera. I want it available as my phone all the time. 2 - 1k+ phones doesn't make sense over a $500 camera with objectively better image quality.
Gerald… you NEED to do more phone camera reviews. These are the most honest reviews of those cameras I’ve ever seen, and they aren’t even the focus on the video.
I hate that the industry is headed towards micro content. Got Cinmematographer degrees but the only thing my entire team is doing is reels! This camera makes zero sense to me and so does 90% of people's approach towards content creation.
I think the new ZV-1F has a lot of potential mainly in less developed countries where products are way more expensive, here in Brazil for example the ZV-1 is awesome but so much expensive that only a few RUclipsrs and content creators actually buy it, most people are just using phones and not even high end devices, also lens are even more expensive.. You can pretty much keep saving half of the year just to buy lenses, meanwhile in countries like US/EU where tech products are easier to buy then the camera maybe will not perform that good in sales.
I wonder how the stabilization would look when run through Gyroflow, since that allows you to dial in the rolling shutter correction and stabilization options better than Catalyst Browse. Note that Gyroflow isn't for the average user since it's an extra post-processing step, but it does allow for better results.
I am pretty sure it records the gyro data, but that rolling shutter jello is something really bad, it looks like a footage from 50 bucks keychain camera.
@@georgitushev It does record the gyro data (I have a ZV1 and use it with Gyroflow a lot!), so in theory Gyroflow should be able to fix the jello completely, even the super bad keychain camera jello seen here! I just like seeing test results to confirm the "in theory" claims :)
*The iPhone 12 can be a great Vlogging camera.* So can the 10, 9, 8, etc. People need to stop buying every new thing that gets dropped, and just shoot! Also homie on the right, just sitting there looks so uncomfortable, not sure who this dude is, but it made the whole video awkward.
Only you dare to tell about the wobbly issue of this camera to the audience. Most of the other content creators are hiding it🙁 I think it has the same issue of zve10
It is interesting that the zv1f is less usable as a vloging camera and more useable as a streaming camera. The one reason I like my zv1 over my iPhone is that the video and photos are more consistent. I was always battling picture to picture changes when doing stop motion on the iPhone which is much better with the zv1 due to better manual controls.
They really need to give these camera's some IBIS, even if it raises the price. Also I wonder how the 1080p quality is, because it's probably a significantly better camera just shooting in 1080p if it improves the rolling shutter performance.
It would be interesting to compare ZV-1F with the Xperia Pro-I, which has a cropped 1-inch sensor, a headphone jack, and can mount an external display.
I wish you had done the sponsor read with zv1f, iPhone, Pixel, and your regular setup in the studio. I would also like to see "what is the max performance we can get from the phone" using Filmic Pro on iPhone or mcpro24fps on Android
The biggest ISSUE with the zv1-f is the stabilization and rolling shutter. From the youtube commercials I have seen you would need to run everything that's not shot on a tripod thru Catalyst Browser. Not worth it. When this camera is released to the non-sponsered folks its going to be destroyed. When Sony can give us GoPro Stab in a 1-inch sensor that will be the bomb...
If only an 18-50 lens of f2.8 or higher had been included, the evaluation of this camera would have been very different. But the problem is that it is a 20mm prime lens. It's an entry-level camera, but beginners have already experienced zoom, albeit digital zoom, on their smartphones. Beginners buying this camera without any knowledge will be the first to know that some cameras do not have zoom.
Keep in mind (in Canada), the iPhone 14 pro is over double the price of the Sony. Are you buying the iPhone 14 pro over a cheaper phone JUST for the camera? Then it's essentially paying more for the iPhone camera than a Sony camera. Just something to consider. Overall the iPhone IS more versatile
Regarding the Pixel and it's facial issues. They've marketed it as a camera that captures people of color more accurately. Well, the issue for people of color is contrast and dynamic range, so it appears that the Pixel is using some facial dynamic range algorithm that's smoothing and brightening faces. That's my guess. If I'm right, they could make this a setting that can be adjusted or even toggled off, helping darker and fairer skinned people.

Could you make video and compare iphone basic camera app to filmic pro on highest settings with properly set exposure and good final grading? It is very interesting for me how much you can push IP14 Pro and close it will get to proper camera if you know what you are doing.
Appreciate the testing. This is exactly what I'm looking for. The phone camera has been updating so fast and I was not sure when it makes sense for me to upgrade to a camera for image, video shooting and live streaming.
you should check out sony 's phone. it comes with a secondary screen so you can use your main camera and have a viewfinder on back. also it's supposed to be much natural looking
The mushy appearance on the edges of the face is due to the averaging for the purpose of noise removal which even becomes more profound if you use the extreme zoom on iPhone 14 pro. Prolly mathematically speaking the resolution decreases on zoom which can be the cause for this but it appearance apple has not caught this issue on their radar.
4k with crop and active stabilisation and i have the same size of sensor like with iphone, and I shouldn't have another device to film and post video. S-cinetone could be nice feature but... really poor camera
@Gerald, @Patrick, Here’s the math for the ZV-1 crop: (Credits: Peter Trub and Over-X-poser comments on Kasey’s video + my comments/clean up). UltraHD 24p crop: 1.094 Active stabilization: 1.185 Combined: 1.094 x 1.185 = 1.29639 ZV-1 sensor size: 13.2mm x 8.8mm FF sensor size: 36mm x 24mm Crop factor for ZV-1 to FF (ff/ZV-1): 36/13.2 = 24/8.8 = 2.727 ZV-1 Crop with 24p + active stabilization: 9.4mm x 1.29639 x 2.727 = 33.2mm FF-equivalent 25.7mm x 1.29639 x 2.727 = 90.9mm FF-equivalent So for 0.45x wide angle adapter from Zomei, you get: 33.2mm x 0.45 = 14.94mm FF-equivalent 90.9mm x 0.45 = 40.905mm FF-equivalent So for 0.75x wide angle adapter from Ulanzi, you get: 33.2mm x 0.75 = 24.9mm FF-equivalent 90.9mm x 0.75 = 68.179mm FF-equivalent You also have the new Neewer Wide Angle Lens with Macro + Extension Tube or the Gixmon UX-Tube Wide Angle Lens with Macro + Extension Tube
I think the pixel 7 needs to upgrade the ultrawide sensor, improve low light performance, and straighten out the camera software stability. The xiaomi 12s ultra has much better low light but poor color balance in many scenarios. Thanks so much for this detailed review
I got mine 4 days ago. Great 2nd camera. My Canon Vixia G40 is good, but it doesn't do the BOKEH thing well. (Depth of field, blurry background)The Sony ZV-1F does it very well. Great little camera for tight sets. It takes a 40.5 mm filter, so use a variable ND filter on those bright days. I mounted mine on a camera grip bar. On the top of the grip is a hot shoe. That's were the mic went. This camera is made in Thailand NOT CHINA. I am trying NOT to buy from China, a communist country. Great video guys! Are yous guys in Canada?
Was any footage from the rear 24mm iPhone camera? I'm struggling to see how the iphone has a 1/1.28in sensor, but yet the vid looks wildly less detailed than the 1inch sensor of the sony.
"Use your phone" is not really a good advice in my opinion. Not everyone owns the latest iPhone or Pixel phone, and therefore the difference between the ZV-1F and their smartphone is greater, thus creating a need to have a dedicated camera for youtube and vlogging.
I think the advice applies to the last few generations of phones though, like we say in the video. It's not just the latest phones that outperform in these regards.
Been using DSLR for my photography. Recently, I discovered that iPad Air (4th generation) takes excellent shots of any landscape (daylight only). So, I combined my photography, either with a DSLR or iPad Air. iPhone picture had lower quality compares to iPad shot. So, I carry a DSLR camera and an iPad Air.
I came to the same conclusion - Phone is better all around, after reading that they had released it. It's a $200 savings (street) off the much more capable ZV1 (optical zoom, ND filters, etc) and the ZV1 is providing what cell phones do not. The F model, well, they took those advantages away and now it's not worth getting the camera over a phone.
@@unwelcomemotivation Several years after the ZV-1 was introduced, and with the ZV-2 already on the market, the ZV-1 still costs $649 new at B&H. The ZV-1F could save you $200, (not half) but more importantly it takes away optical zoom, ND and other key physical features that, for some, are worth that $200. I'm not acting like $200 is nothing, just like the optical zoom, ND filter, etc are also not nothing. It's clear where the cost savings came from.
@@IEBATechThoughts huh? Like I said, that's almost 50% of the value of the product. It's not "just 200" especially when the zv-1f is 400 dollars RIGHT now. You don't just double the value of a civic and say get a bmw for just "20k" more lol
My initial reply that you're complaining about was made over a year ago. Go check the prices I was referring to that were available back then. You can't look at prices today, and then tell me my comment about prices, from a year ago, doesn't make sense. That said. Current price on B&H for the ZV-1, just the camera, is $648 Current price of the ZV-1F, - "With holiday savings of $113" is $400 - Regularly $511. Are you pointing to a 1-week sale, at one retailer, to complain about my comment about pricing, form a YEAR AGO?
@@IEBATechThoughts yes, yes I am. the zv-1 certainly wasn't 648 a year ago, but go off, hypocrite. America isn't the only country in the world - the zv-1 is 999 on SALE for 899 in canada vs the zv-1f at 659 on sale for 549...which might make it make more sense for ya.

I think ZV is not for people who has 1000usd phone. In Poland, EU Sony cost 2999 PLN and Iphone14 PRO 7199 PLN. So ZV could be great update over 400USD android phone and I think that is what Sony is going for.
According to dxomark test on 7 pro that soft look you get is because of the distance you hold it from your face. It works better farther away in their test.
It's hilarious how phones have been trying to become "proper cameras" for ages and now "proper cameras" are trying to be more like phone cameras with fixed lenses, wider FoV, computational photography etc.
I think we're at a crucial moment where the phones need to feature a stronger camera game because phones are already so much better. Battery life is way better for phones. The lens are way better for cameras. That's literally all you have so it's just a matter of adding a better lens to the phone somehow. I'm willing to accept a bitter camera bump. Not sure about others.
I can’t believe he didn’t include Sony Xperia 1V in this conversation? I’ve been using that phone against iPhone 14pro. And I can tell you there is no comparison. Sony phone camera is at another level.
I love the video! I think you are the most honest tech/camera youtuber from all of those who did reviews of this camera. I would love to see you doing a battle between the Sony ZV-1F and Nikon Z30 maybe you can add even the ZV-E10. I know they are not the same type of cameras but I think it would be cool. I wanna see if the Nikon camera has better stabilization and built-in mic compared to the Sony ones. Btw..will Canon ever release a G7X Mark 4? ✌😉❤
Why Sony removed from this new model the effective stabilization of the Zv-1 and why it removed phase detection, opting only for contrast detection, and finally, why Sony betting on a 20mm fixed lens, got worse your aperture, from f/1.8 that the Zv-1 had to f/2 this Zv-1 F ? Why didn't they set it to an aperture of f/1.4 since it's now a fixed focal length?
I really wish Google had tried harder at video from the beginning - i.e. Nexus5X/6P. They waited over half a decade to finally start working at it and it shows. Not unlike the Google's re-use of the ancient camera sensors from the 1-5a though, so the slow-walking optics is very on-brand for Google.
Both you guys fail to mention that the Sony has a storage advantage because you are shooting to a card not internal storage which is really important for vacationing. You can switch cards without having to dump footage everyday.
Based on this I can just say that if you are going to spend money on upgrading your vlogging setup, you would be better off spending more money on apps and accessories for your existing phone before skipping the ZV-1F and going straight for the ZV-1 or ZV-E10.

Regarding that jittery wobble:
You can even see that perfectly at 20:37 - The light bars are jittering all over the place.
I think the off-centre 1/4 mount is because this camera is designed to be used with the shooting handle :)
Great video guys! Good to see my man Patrick helping out again. Cheers.
Thanks!
Broooo, in the beginning I thought that dude was a younger time traveling Devin Supertramp.
I wonder how the stabilization would look when run through Gyroflow, since that allows you to dial in the rolling shutter correction and stabilization options better than Catalyst Browse. Note that Gyroflow isn't for the average user since it's an extra post-processing step, but it does allow for better results.
Pretty sure this camera does NOT record gyro data. So you can stabilize it that way
I am pretty sure it records the gyro data, but that rolling shutter jello is something really bad, it looks like a footage from 50 bucks keychain camera.
@@georgitushev It does record the gyro data (I have a ZV1 and use it with Gyroflow a lot!), so in theory Gyroflow should be able to fix the jello completely, even the super bad keychain camera jello seen here! I just like seeing test results to confirm the "in theory" claims :)
Finally people who actually know things about cameras and colors reviewing these things.
One of the only honest reviews I’ve seen on this, pick the phone everyday
Only you dare to tell about the wobbly issue of this camera to the audience. Most of the other content creators are hiding it🙁 I think it has the same issue of zve10
It is interesting that the zv1f is less usable as a vloging camera and more useable as a streaming camera. The one reason I like my zv1 over my iPhone is that the video and photos are more consistent. I was always battling picture to picture changes when doing stop motion on the iPhone which is much better with the zv1 due to better manual controls.
I would say for gateway camera ZVE10 is proper since you can change lenses... which is really crucial in understanding photography
With a lens you're spending double the money though. Or close to it if you get a bad lens.
@@adventurepromo I would get zve10 + Sigma 16mm 1.4 and keep that shitty kit lens for zooming. this zv1f is just too small an upgrade from an iPhone.
Yes. Still wouldn't get that one either but it does makes way more sense.
You learn nothing about photography/videography by working with the f1.
They really need to give these camera's some IBIS, even if it raises the price. Also I wonder how the 1080p quality is, because it's probably a significantly better camera just shooting in 1080p if it improves the rolling shutter performance.
lol and eat up 6400 sales? doubt it
@@takoflame4948 both camera's aren't even going to appeal to the same person
Ehh, not sold on it. DJI just needs to release a Pocket 3 with the new 1/1.3 type sensor in the Mini 3 Pro and a 20-22mm fov lens on it..
It would be interesting to compare ZV-1F with the Xperia Pro-I, which has a cropped 1-inch sensor, a headphone jack, and can mount an external display.
Hello, this video could have wrapped up at 5 mins when you show the rolling shutter wobble. that right there is the total deal breaker for me.
I wish you had done the sponsor read with zv1f, iPhone, Pixel, and your regular setup in the studio.
I would also like to see "what is the max performance we can get from the phone" using Filmic Pro on iPhone or mcpro24fps on Android
Awe I was curious to hear what dynamic range you got for the iPhone lol. If you had to give an estimate, what would you say it gives in usable stops?
The biggest ISSUE with the zv1-f is the stabilization and rolling shutter. From the youtube commercials I have seen you would need to run everything that's not shot on a tripod thru Catalyst Browser. Not worth it. When this camera is released to the non-sponsered folks its going to be destroyed. When Sony can give us GoPro Stab in a 1-inch sensor that will be the bomb...
Do you have a problem moving large 4K video file off of the iPhone?
Great comparison! The movement/shake from the Sonys stabilization drives me nuts! They need to perfect that, then release a new camera :)
Watched a lot of videos on this topic and really couldn't decide until now.. Cheers fellas you nailed it!
My two favorite camera nerds in one video!?!? 😱 💯yes yes yes!
1:07 there's a fingerprint on your lens. Test is instantly ruined! 😝
Lol! I love how Patrick just lives in your studio now.
I cook and clean so its a fair deal
😂
Keep in mind (in Canada), the iPhone 14 pro is over double the price of the Sony. Are you buying the iPhone 14 pro over a cheaper phone JUST for the camera? Then it's essentially paying more for the iPhone camera than a Sony camera. Just something to consider. Overall the iPhone IS more versatile
I really wanted to see the DR on the phones, and how that compares to the ZV-1F
No phase detect autofocus and bad rolling shutter in a "vlogging" camera... Ok.
TLDR right here
you should check out sony 's phone. it comes with a secondary screen so you can use your main camera and have a viewfinder on back. also it's supposed to be much natural looking
USB Streaming support for 1080p60 like A7IV or is it capped at 720p30, if available at all?
Just the 720p stuff unfortunately.
@@geraldundone ow, too bad :/
4k with crop and active stabilisation and i have the same size of sensor like with iphone, and I shouldn't have another device to film and post video. S-cinetone could be nice feature but... really poor camera
Nice video, loved the outro, good job both of you!
Gerald and Kasey. We need this video. Time is running out for some of us.
Great review - love this kind of video with the two of you
@Gerald, @Patrick,
Here’s the math for the ZV-1 crop:
(Credits: Peter Trub and Over-X-poser comments on Kasey’s video + my comments/clean up).
UltraHD 24p crop: 1.094
Active stabilization: 1.185
Combined: 1.094 x 1.185 = 1.29639
ZV-1 sensor size: 13.2mm x 8.8mm
FF sensor size: 36mm x 24mm
Crop factor for ZV-1 to FF (ff/ZV-1):
36/13.2 = 24/8.8 = 2.727
ZV-1 Crop with 24p + active stabilization:
9.4mm x 1.29639 x 2.727 = 33.2mm FF-equivalent
25.7mm x 1.29639 x 2.727 = 90.9mm FF-equivalent
So for 0.45x wide angle adapter from Zomei, you get:
33.2mm x 0.45 = 14.94mm FF-equivalent
90.9mm x 0.45 = 40.905mm FF-equivalent
So for 0.75x wide angle adapter from Ulanzi, you get:
33.2mm x 0.75 = 24.9mm FF-equivalent
90.9mm x 0.75 = 68.179mm FF-equivalent
You also have the new Neewer Wide Angle Lens with Macro + Extension Tube or the Gixmon UX-Tube Wide Angle Lens with Macro + Extension Tube
I think the pixel 7 needs to upgrade the ultrawide sensor, improve low light performance, and straighten out the camera software stability. The xiaomi 12s ultra has much better low light but poor color balance in many scenarios. Thanks so much for this detailed review
Great job on the video you two! Thanks for making it.
That Ending was just as good as the whole video. :)
I use my iphone 14 Pro with Filmic pro (and Rode video mic Go ii) which displays audio levels :)
Man, i would have loved it if y'all compared the main rear camera 🫠
Does the ZV-1F support A7 iv -style webcam use? That seems like a very good environment for this camera
Unfortunately, no. Just some 720p stuff
Does it support the streamlined connection to computer though? Zv1 and zv-e10 don't. A7iv does. Zv-1f?
Been using DSLR for my photography. Recently, I discovered that iPad Air (4th generation) takes excellent shots of any landscape (daylight only). So, I combined my photography, either with a DSLR or iPad Air. iPhone picture had lower quality compares to iPad shot. So, I carry a DSLR camera and an iPad Air.
I came to the same conclusion - Phone is better all around, after reading that they had released it.
It's a $200 savings (street) off the much more capable ZV1 (optical zoom, ND filters, etc) and the ZV1 is providing what cell phones do not.
The F model, well, they took those advantages away and now it's not worth getting the camera over a phone.
you act like 200 is nothing, when 200 is half the cost of the product...
That said. Current price on B&H for the ZV-1, just the camera, is $648
Current price of the ZV-1F, - "With holiday savings of $113" is $400 - Regularly $511.
Hello , can you please follow up if this new zv1f camera has the same setup as original zv1 where you have to push c2 button for your video to be stabilized(but you loose wide angle cuz it crops), i don't have sony stabilized tripod and won't get one
Thank you!
Where you using the pre-release camera app? On release day they updated the camera app with a pretty big download
Can you guys now do the Nikon Z30 in the same kind of comparison? I've be very interested in that!
Brilliantly comprehensive. Thanks, guys.
Great job guys! The ONLY thing this video was missing was including some of Sony's own flagship phones like the Xperia Pro-I or Xperia 1iv
Interesting. In Sweden the ZV-1 is $620 ZV-1f current list price $665
Btw what's up with the no card warning on every camera review?
Just curious
I think the better use case is for streamers and talking head in controlled environments. The jello makes handheld vlogging a non starter for me.
I hope you can make a review of Motion Cam App on Android. It can shoot raw video
Zv e10 vs zv1F?
Not having that ugly artificial sharpening is already a plus against phones
I'd love for canon to finally drop a G7X Mark 4 too!!!
The d4 mini can’t be monitored it self, the output port is for the audio signal, the input is for second mic
Sony, where's our RX10 mk5? Where's our entry level APS-C camera with 2023 specs?
Both you guys fail to mention that the Sony has a storage advantage because you are shooting to a card not internal storage which is really important for vacationing. You can switch cards without having to dump footage everyday.
preparing my stomach for Kasey review too.
Can you monitor audio via Bluetooth headphones on phones while the mics are on?
The Sony rolling shutter, can it be fixed by Catalyst? Maybe its how it supposed to be processed
This is the comparison I really want to see!
Based on this I can just say that if you are going to spend money on upgrading your vlogging setup, you would be better off spending more money on apps and accessories for your existing phone before skipping the ZV-1F and going straight for the ZV-1 or ZV-E10.
