Very interesting ! As a non Jew , I cant understand why those 350,000 Yeshiva Students who live in Israel , feel they can live in Israel without contributing, like all other young Israelis . If they don't want to actually fight , I believe they must give the same 3 years or so , doing farm work or whatever the state needs at the time ! I went to Israel for the first 4 months of this year and worked on a Kibbutz as a volunteer fruit picker . The Kibbutz was on the Lebanese border , there was rockets every day ! but I didn't really feel I was in any big danger ( iron dome ) Point being , most days it was just me and an Israeli guy ( now my good friend ) Whole crops went to waste because there were no workers ! These Yeshiva Students must contribute like everybody else ! ( Dear friends of Israel, apart from the obvious, I'm so glad I went to Israel and made some great new friends) ! I highly recommend to all non Jews to go to Israel and work on a Kibbutz! I promise you, you will have a great time and valuable experience !
The way the army is structured today, it is not just an army, but an educational institution. That institution has statistically shown itself effective at distancing Jews from Judaism. The same forces that leverage the army for great reshapings of Israeli society, would do the same for other contribution frameworks. You're essentially saying Judaism shouldn't matter that much, something to which the Haredim are diametrically opposed.
The problem I see in the west, I cannot convince 1 person how twisted the Hamas mindset is. They simply cannot believe that parents would 'martyr' 🤨 their children by refusing to leave their homes.
Making demands of the Israelis is the job of journalism? How come it is not the job of journalism to make demands of Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis or Iran? Actually, the job of journalists is to report and ask questions of BOTH sides and to be skeptical of answers that don't match what they see and don't correspond with what is possible. It is NOT the job of journalists or journalism to push an agenda.
I love how when he speaks on things he is sure of he is really strong in what he has to say and confident. But when he speaks on things more on personal views, you can see humility which is warming to see. I actually thought he was bit arrogant when i first heard one of his lectures before, but i think i may have be mistaken in that he was actually confident about his history, not arrogance. I also thought it was very wise what he was asked about 'hope and fear' and he replied with" isreals hopes have already been realised " your not hoping for you something you already have" that was a very good answer. Right wing intellectuals are rarer than their left wing counterparts, but God their level of clarity, nuance and integrity dwarfs the lefties by a huge margin.
Ive been following Haviv for a while now, and I think he has a brilliant mind. I appreciate in particular his great efforts to educate Israelis and Jews in the diaspora about the history that has lead to the current reality of the Jewish people inside and outside of the state of Israel, and to help people decontextualize their identity away from silly abstractions that treat us like characters in someone else’s fantasy about us. However, I do have some criticisms. These criticisms are directed less towards Haviv himself than the platforms on which he speaks. And this criticism extends to the way that many other relevant, bright public speakers are platformed. We are living in a time of major transition in global politics and culture, and the world is headed towards another one of its periodic convulsions that take place at predictable intervals throughout human history. A lot of what Haviv says is thoughtful and takes into account a great many factors about Israeli society, but it fails to address the degree of chaos and unpredictability that Jews face in and out of Israel, as well as the multitude of variables at play in geopolitics broadly speaking. He still speaks about a two state solution as if it’s a precise mathematical equation, that makes sense, while a “one-state solution” is mathematically wrong. The reality is that any “solution” to the so-called “Palestinian-Israeli” conflict is so far off in the future that the realities and variables in Israeli and diaspora Jewish life will be completely different than what they are at the present moment. I would like to see more public intellectuals like Haviv be subjected to competing visions of the future (and interpretations of the present) such that the public can be exposed to a deeper conversation about what is possible or probable in the future. The bottom line is that none of the models work anymore, and as soon as we can at least acknowledge that fact, the sooner we can start using our imagination and creativity to constructively change the conversation. If what I’m saying sounds vague, that’s precisely the point. I’m not advocating for an ideology. I’m advocating for an acknowledgment that the models are broken and that people like Haviv need to engage with other intellectual leaders to start considering new models within an evolving paradigm. Maybe these conversations need to remain behind closed doors for the time being, but they need to happen one way or another. We’ve solved bigger problems as a people in the past, and I’m confident that we will solve the many crises we currently face. But we have to get to work.

Great discussion but the answer on the question of the continued utility of Zionism misses the point,. I think we should stop using the term “Zionism” for any purposes other than to describe the historic movement to build a polity for the Jewish nation in the holy land. Since that has been done and the state exists, we should retire the term. Its continued use suggests that Israel is an abstraction, an idea that you can agree or disagree with. This enables the anti-Israel crowd to call for genocide while pretending they are merely disagreeing with an ideology and that Zionism wasa bad idea which should be reversed. The use of the term Zionism places the burden on Zionists to constantly prove Israel’s right to exist, which is not the case for any other state. We should say:”Zionism succeeded, whether you like it or not. Its progeny exists, whether you think the baby should have been born, or aborted. Now it’s too late. The baby was born and has grown into a full-fledged state with 10 million people, which possesses all of the legitimacy-markers for states in international law. If you want to deny our right to exist, you are a proponent of genocide, full stop. Call it what it is.
I have spent months writing letters to the press such as this posted below because Americans and our journalists are not curious or probing as you note in this discussion: Hezbollah started this war and they are terrorists … who have infiltrated, co-opted and destroyed the nation of Lebanon- …they are a massive mercenary army under Iran - this was as targeted and precise a strike against an war-mongering enemy as anyone could want- clearly you have no concept of the current military or geopolitical situation existing between Israel and Iran’s proxy terror army Hezbollah. Why don’t you take some time to google around and read some articles about what Iran and Hezbollah have done to Israel and Lebanon. For example-Do you know that Iran is thousands of miles away from Israel and has no business stationing a massive terrorist army on its border? Are you cheering on the Houthis, Assad in Syria, Iran, and Hamas as well? Why do you believe Israel has no right to defend itself against terrorists?
The blockade was only against weapons and entering illegally to Israel. They also have a border with Egypt, so why did Egypt closed its border with Gaza?

There are rotten apples on both sides. Nothing in life is binary as he suggests. And if anyone, the blame is on people like Ehud Barak that's gone absolutely mental in his persuit to destroy the government (and even Israel as a whole, if thats the price. Pure blind hatred).
My theory as to why Iran is obsessed with Israel, and also why Oct. 7 was perpetrated, is this is a power struggle over who dominates the Middle-East; Iran and its proxies on one side, and Israel and Saudi Arabia on the other. Oct 7 was done to scuttle the Abraham accords, a raproachment between Israel and the Saudis. It's not as if the Saudis love Israel, but they need their expertise and technology to deter Iran. If Oct. 7 hadn't hapenned, Israel would've continued its expansion in the West Bank and the Palestinians would have been left out and forgotten. The Middle-East might have even settled down somewhat.
@@davidk2471 I've heard numerous interviews with Haviv recently, not just this one. In one of them he even admits he is secretly a leftie, although he does so with some humour. Israel has been torn from the inside because of people like that prior to Oct 7th, we don't want this BS anymore.
@@davidk2471Even without being Israeli I can give you some reasons. 1. The entire Israeli defence system was completely unprepared on Oct 7. Imagine the Israeli air force went to the breached fence quickly. Hamas invaders would have been killed before most of the killing began. There would have been no hostages. It would have taken a couple of minutes for planes to get there, & a couple of hours for tanks to get there, because Israel is small. 2. There were Israeli soldier girls who wore hijabs who spied in Gaza. They knew something was brewing & their warnings were ignored. Why? Their very purpose in Gaza was to look for signs of military preparations. Why were their warnings ignored? Unless Netanyahu proves himself there will be investigations in these matters once the war ends. He has already set himself up to fail Israel in his promises because he promises both the defeat of Hamas & the rescue of the hostages. It is a no-brainer that fulfilling both is mutually exclusive. Sinwar will keep a group of hostages as his own personal human shields to the very end, & will kill them if the IDF gets close, the way they did recently. A great leader would prepare his people that achieving both goals would be almost impossible, but he would try. Instead Netanyahu lies that he will do both, adding more impossible promises to impossible promises he has made down the years.

FWIW, neuroscience has proved that being objective, for us humans, is biologically impossible. The brain actually edits our memories during sleep when it changes short term memories to long term memories. We have no conscious control over this editing. It's why you can be at an event with someone, & the two of you remember it differently. Lawyers have known since forever that no two witnesses ever tell the same story, no matter how bright or how honest each may be. Your demand that journalists "report facts" is unrealistic in the light of all of this. None of us surmounts being human. So the next best thing is to be able to understand opposing points of view; to see how others come to opposing opinions, even when you disagree w them. I think this guy is strong in doing just that. FWIW. (Expect perfection & you will be doomed to disappointments.)
@@MrDavidbr1970Yep really. I'm not a neuroscientist but I follow their discoveries online. Science is incredibly elitist. They like believing they know more than they do. MRI scans can track if a neuron is firing or not, so they make metaphors w computers & call the info kilobyts. Like a juicy metaphor they have is the conscious mind processes about 66 kilobytes of info per sec while the subconscious processes about 66 million kilobytes per second; but the metaphor falls short. It makes it seem like "on" or "off" is all a brain neuron does, which ignores that they've found over 5,000 kinds of brain cells, & ignores how hormones (the endocrine system) affects the brain. Still, learning about things they have discovered (like the editing of memories when we sleep) is real interesting.
@@MrDavidbr1970I gave you a long answer but I don't see it. I've recently learned that sometimes RUclips doesn't completely block a post, but hides it so only the poster it's directed to gets it. Did you get my answers to your question about neuroscience?
@@brynawaldman5790 Yes, I saw it. So, we can agree not on one, but on two objective facts: (1) your nickname is brynawaldman5790 and (2) you wrote that message. Now let's apply this "impossible" standard to investigative journalism, shall we? Who broke ceasefire Hamas or Israel? Who took the hostages Hamas or Israel? Who broke the UN resolution 1701 Hezbollah or Israel. And so on and so fourth. Before pushing opinions and interpretations, a real journalist have a duty to inform herself/himself of the facts and then inform the readership of these facts. Now, when we established some facts, an undertaking you believe to be impossible, how about this: it _is_ unfair when an uninformed journalist pushes a counter-factual agenda. The last statement is my opinion about the profession and responsibility of journalist. It is the work of the journalist to fight her own bias. Hard, but not impossible.
As a Westerner and non-Jew offering an outsider’s perspective, I find Haviv provides an insightful and much-needed understanding of Israel’s position and the complexities within its society, along with a clear view of the average Israeli perspective. However, when addressing Israel's adversaries, he seems to lean toward oversimplification, often framing them through the singular lens of antisemitism and as monolithic entities driven by unified ideology of antisemitism. While antisemitism undeniably plays a role in the institutional narratives of Israel's adversaries, in my view is less central in their political strategies and the popular sentiment of their populations. Broader historical and political contexts are critical to understanding their actions. The tendency to conflate anti-Zionism with antisemitism-understandable given the deep generational trauma of the Holocaust and the longer history of Jewish persecution-can sometimes blur these distinctions. A more nuanced perspective of all sides could enrich the conversation, fostering greater understanding and hopefully encouraging less hawkish, more long-term approach in Israel’s strategies toward its adversaries:) And lol yes i used chat gpt in forming this comment..)
Haviv is always so intelligent and interesting to listen to. I wish his disdain for Israel’s government wasn’t so apparent though, especially because the majority of Israelis do support Netanyahu. So when people complain about Netanyahu, it’s ultimately disparaging the majority of everyday Israelis who believe he is the most capable leader we have. This kind of disdain is what is driving the wedge. Also, why should Israeli politicians show up in places where they will get brutally heckled? No one should be subjected to that, and haviv knows perfectly well that’s what would happen. These politicians are even heckled overseas by that crowd.
Most Israelis do not support Netanyahu, he has 30% support right now. And many of those who do "support" hi, say that they don't approve of how he's handling things, but don't think there's a better option out there. In my opinion he gives this irresponsible, authoritarian, corrupt government much more respect than they deserve, they are dragging Israel into the abyss.
Haviv Rettig Gur says “There is a God--“ and you interrupt him?? At THAT point?? Great interview (as usual, and thank you for it all), but I wish we could have heard him out on that part!
Until this interview I respected Haviv Rettig Gur. But given his rhetorical questions, (such as: why is HAMAS destroying Gaza, why is Iran interested in Israel when it has no border with Israel), reveals an utter lack of understanding of Islam and compels the conclusion that he never read the Koran. If so, given that little Israel is surrounded by 22 Muslim states and over 400 million muslims, this is incredibly incompetent of him. And, when he claims that he does not understand how could Sinwar have launched 10-7 when there must have been other sane persons in the organization, who are presumably not sociopathic or psychopathic, and could of prevented it, shows a colossal idiocy on his part. For they are all extreme Muslims on a Jihad to establish the supremacy of Islam over Israel. Its a 1400 year religious war ordered in the Koran (i.e. the word and directive of Allah himself devoid of any morality). If that alone is not sufficiently sociopathic, I don't know what is. Wake up Haviv Rettig Gur and read the Koran--its available in Hebrew too.
I don't think you listened closely. @ 0:52 "We have enemies who think they can destroy us ...." @ 1:30 "... big religious ideologies that come for you because you play some role in a big moral historical cartoon in their own heads . . . . Welcome to Jewish history." I think he takes it for granted that listeners have the overview you spell out in detail.
The rhetorical nature of the questions led me to think that Gur actually does know the enemy really well. He was just trying to show how incurious western journalists are that they do not notice these seeming incongruencies and ask more questions about it.
The podcaster chose 18 specific questions, & most of them were about Israelis' relationships w each other & w their government & history. I've heard him address the topics you'd prefer hearing about, in other videos. He did hint at your preferred themes early on with " . . . big religious ideologies that come for you because you play some role in a big moral historical cartoon in their own heads . . . . Welcome to Jewish history." (@ 1:30; that could apply to Islam & to Nazi thinking . . . .) Anyway; this wasn't an open ended discussion. The podcaster had 18 specific questions in mind.
Sorry but Haviv is way more knowledgeable about Islam than your caricature of him here. If you don’t realize this, go watch his interview with The Free Press from March 21st “The Gathering Storm”, also available on RUclips, where he dives deep into the nuances of the different elements of Islam at play within the wider regional conflict.
Listen to the interview again, he mentions these questions as as a criticism of international journalists who do not bother to deeply understand the politics and ideology of the parties involved, and who do not bother asking these questions.
When Haviv begins an answer on his religiosity with "There is a G-d..." and is about to launch into an undoubtedly interesting point--and you interrupt him to insist on prodding him into declaring an identity affiliation...you are making a mistake.
Regarding leadership: in Australia we haven't had a good, strong leader for many years. There are good people in government but they don't have the power to influence or make changes. I think this is common in many countries.

But you are NEVER going to get all the hostages that way. It's a false alternative and anyone who believes that it is a real alternative is a cretin. So Bibi it is.
Well said sir. As a gentile good luck to Israel and its people.

Thank you from the bottom of my Jewish soul for helping me navigate the despair and elation since October 7th. You pick me up and let me down gently. And, you are kind and wise. Be safe and well. From Downunder.

Thank you to all israelis who had helped us to send us our people dead body to Nepal, they were murdered by hamas. And IDF helped us to save our hindu nepali female students from hamas on oct 7. Thanks to israeli ambassador who went to meet those families in nepal. Israeli people never disrespected our nepali workers in israel meanwhile these muslim countries have always misused our nepali brothers and sisters. One is taken as hostage in gaza for that also israel is vocal. If ever israel ask help from nepal for nepali soldiers we will provide them. Nepal is small country but our soldiers are great. We are called as gorkhali soldiers whom Hitler used to fear. So we will always be there for Israel. God bless Israel.may israel and nepal friend stay forever.❤
@@Monkey_PNut No wisdom from this guy. Completely incoherent. First it's the job of "journalists" to oppose the government on Gazan deaths. He says in so many words, and a few minutes later he says it's NOT their job to be some sort of moral vanguard. He says this with no sign of cognitive dissonance at all. And he wants to lay 10/7 at Netanyahu's feet when the whole situation was created by Netanyahu's opponents. It wasn't Likud that pulled out and left HAMAS in charge of Gaza. Etc.

More than extraordinary. Have read &listened to Haviv for years. One word... Wisdom.
What is Zionism? It's why sine Jews survived the 20th century. In 2024, better get a move on. Back to the Negev.
I have listened to him for years as well and find myself more informed because of his lectures. That said, wisdom does not mean his analysis takes into consideration political realities that he seems to ignore. What are the optics of removing Netanyahu after Oct 7. Hamas claims a victory in bringing down the government of Israel. Netanyahu can be removed after Victory but not before.
He seems to be conflating a jewish state with a religious state...which is odd considering he is smarter than that. A Jewish state means a Jewish majority state, not religious state. He knows this. When it ceases to be majority Jewish it will also cease to be democratic.
@@bkrumer Where does he do this? Supply a time stamp. Or quote him. Or SOMEthing.
@@bkrumerthe idea that Hamas ends hostilities towards Israel with the removal of Netanyahu is comical. Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran don't want peace or a two state solution. They've literally said so in their charter.

I will not judge on Bibi. All I know is that it is not easy to satisfy everyone internally and drag Israël as a nation through the world-turmoil. Look at Churchill. He was not loved in England, voted away before the end of the war, but peculiarly he was hard to replace to face the crucial period of WWII.
❤
You clearly haven't a clue what's up. Bibi the immoral opportunist liar should never be mentioned in the same sentence as Churchill. Disgusting.
Haviv is a national treasure, i love love love his measured, nuanced, strawman approach to any question or situation… i learn something every time i listen to him & honestly i could listen to him for hours.. this was more than a conversation, this was brain food ! Thank you gentlemen… ps you are so right about western journalism or what passes for it, it’s mostly infantile 🇬🇧🇮🇱🇬🇧
The Kibbutz was on the Lebanese border , there was rockets every day ! but I didn't really feel I was in any big danger ( iron dome )
Point being , most days it was just me and an Israeli guy ( now my good friend ) Whole crops went to waste because there were no workers !
The yeshiva students contribute to the country by sustaining an ancient culture ... not so different from what you propose (eg doing farm work etc)
God bless Israel! I stand with You forever.
The problem I see in the west, I cannot convince 1 person how twisted the Hamas mindset is. They simply cannot believe that parents would 'martyr' 🤨 their children by refusing to leave their homes.
There are a few that understand it but definitely not enough

As little as possible for things you love. Fantastic answer.
Magnificently erudite, wise and disarmingly honest.
Insightful comment and well written to boot.

Question: Was Haviv protesting against Likud and Netanyahu before October 7th?
Listen to the interview & find out.
A wonderful interview- great questions with an amazing Israeli
Loved this! Thank you!
I have spent months writing letters to the press such as this posted below because Americans and our journalists are not curious or probing as you note in this discussion:
Hezbollah started this war and they are terrorists …
who have infiltrated, co-opted and destroyed the nation of Lebanon-
…they are a massive mercenary army under Iran -
this was as targeted and precise a strike against an war-mongering enemy as anyone could want-
clearly you have no concept of the current military or geopolitical situation existing between Israel and Iran’s proxy terror army Hezbollah.

Haviv is great, and he has a lot of facts and notions right on spot, but I bluntly disagree with him on the topic of blaming this specific government for the division among Israelis. There are rotten apples on both sides. Nothing in life is binary as he suggests. And if anyone, the blame is on people like Ehud Barak that's gone absolutely mental in his persuit to destroy the government (and even Israel as a whole, if thats the price. Pure blind hatred).
So, in your opinion, who would be a better PM?
Netanyahu is the best leader that Israel can have in this challenge. Do realise that, Haviv !!!

I'm an Israeli and I'm disgusted by him
@@r0di223 tell us why

Your first duty as a journalist is to report facts.
@@brynawaldman5790 Really? Is your nickname brynawaldman5790 and did you write this reply?

Jews say Jesus is in hell
What’s the name of the book ???
Now is not a time for political analysis, too many enemies
Israel for ever
Such a brilliant opening question: how do you feel as a Jew? Just utter brilliance.
Haviv Rettig Gur says “There is a God--“ and you interrupt him?? At THAT point?? Great interview (as usual, and thank you for it all), but I wish we could have heard him out on that part!
Such a smart man
I love listening to you Haviv, but you didn't answer directly regarding Iran. Most have speculation, but I care to hear your thoughts.
If so, given that little Israel is surrounded by 22 Muslim states and over 400 million muslims, this is incredibly
incompetent of him. And, when he claims that he does not understand how could Sinwar have launched 10-7 when there must have been other sane persons in the organization, who are presumably not sociopathic or psychopathic, and could of prevented it, shows a
colossal idiocy on his part.
@ 0:52 "We have enemies who think they can destroy us ...." @ 1:30 "... big religious ideologies that come for you because you play some role in a big moral historical cartoon in their own heads . . . . Welcome to Jewish history."
I think he takes it for granted that listeners have the overview you spell out in detail.
He did hint at your preferred themes early on with " . . . big religious ideologies that come for you because you play some role in a big moral historical cartoon in their own heads . . . . Welcome to Jewish history." (@ 1:30; that could apply to Islam & to Nazi thinking . . . .)
Anyway; this wasn't an open ended discussion.
So who would you like to lead the country in place of Netanyahu? Honestly, nobody comes to mind. Maybe Einst Wilf...

Why didn't you let Haviv give his proof of God?!
When Haviv begins an answer on his religiosity with "There is a G-d..." and is about to launch into an undoubtedly interesting point--and you interrupt him to insist on prodding him into declaring an identity affiliation...you are making a mistake.
