It's a big problem in america, I didn't know the proper pronunciation till my 20s, the first time I heard about a gyro was in seinfeld. I was corrected though by a local greek restaurant when I ordered there. As long it's made correctly with high quality ingredients a gyro is amazing, with a balance of bread, veg, meat and sauce you can eat it every day.

Do you have the word "gyroscope" in the Greek language, and do you pronounce it "yee-roh-scope?" I heard that it was named after the rotating spit. In the US I've heard it pronounced yee-roh... also jee-roh or jie-roh. I've never heard 'guy-roh' like in the video.

Döner kebap (Turkish), Gyros (Greek), and Shawerma (Arabic) are all basically the same thing. The meat may be seasoned a bit differently, and they may be commonly served with different toppings, it's the same general idea of stacking thin slices of meat on a vertical spit. All the cuisines in that region have a lot of similar dishes that are only named differently in different languages. I've even seen a number of instances of Arab or Turkish restauranteurs in the US using the word "gyros" on their menus just because it's more familiar to Americans.

    • @andrewhcit

@@abraham2174 The bit about shawerma is not true; it's usually lamb or beef and only sometimes chicken. (I can say this with some confidence because I grew up in an Arabic-speaking country.) Gyros and döner kebap also use a variety of meats. (In the US, gyros is usually either lamb or beef.) The type of meat is not really important, the process of stacking thin slices, slow roasting on a vertical spit, and shaving it off the sides is the important part.
Mexico's al pastor is more-or-less the same process as well (and is in fact a Mexican adaptation of the shawerma brought by Lebanese immigrants) but differs much more in that it is almost always pork and is seasoned with a chile paste and pineapple.

Just connecting some Dots here: "gyros" could literally meant "turning/spinning" or "to turn/to spin". i am under the impression "Shawarma" means something similar. Eastern Mediterranean region and Anatolia share many characteristics. The "histories of the sword" may have kept us apart throughout the ages, but the "histories of the spoon" bring us together.

No ground meat, no beef, no lamb. All other variations are welcome, it's just 95% of all fast foods in Greece, sell it like that.

So though lamb is not traditional, the flavor profile is gyro, and not shawarma.

You may not care about these things, and that's your prerogative.
But don't get in the way of me trying to make someone aware of the fact that calling people "pure", when you have no idea who they are, is damaging to language and communication. And remember, THIS is still just a Gyros that is not made in Greece. Greek food in Greece is waaaay better than anything outside of Greece. And this is true and I will tell you why. Greek cuisine is very heavily based on fresh ingredients, fresh herbs, fresh vegetables, fruits and so on and so on which all are world famous for it's absolute excellence of quality and flavors. So when you use these ingredients, they are far better than what you get elsewhere. So even if you have a wonderful Greek grandma making the best recipe, the same recipe tastes 100% certain better in Greece.
And let me remind those people that may come from countries where there are Greek restaurants, and having been already in contact with them before going to Greece. they ALL say, WTF the food in Greece tastes SO good. And also those who are from countries like India (I regularly watch Indian couples visiting Greece on their vlogs) all are also very much in love with Greek food.

We have a couple Greek restaurants in town that popped up in the last five years. It was so exciting for me because my absolute favorite restaurant growing up was a little mom and pop Greek restaurant with incredible traditional Greek dishes. I lived without Greek food for probably 15 years, then one Greek chain popped up in town. It was okay but definitely Americanized. Another small shop opened up a couple years later. Much better, but still not that Greek mom and pop flavor that I miss. If I remember right the owners and cooks could barely speak English, though they genuinely tried. And at least a couple of the kids conversed with customers and manned the floor. I miss that place. They closed their doors years ago as the parents were getting old when we moved away in 2003, but God bless them and their wonderful cooking. Someday I'll stumble across a Greek place that can match those flavors, but I doubt I'll find it in my little town.
