Reubens are my favorite sandwich. There was a local grocery store I used to go to whose deli made Reubens and would then toast them for you. I had ordered them quite a few times. One day I went there and the lady behind the counter glanced at me, then turned and said 'Reuben!' And I said 'That's right!' all smug that she remembered me. There's a counter-sandwich to the Reuben known as the Rachel. It's a smoked turkey and cheddar with coleslaw on marble rye, grilled. Many restaurants offer this option where they list their Reuben sandwich.
That sounds nice, I'll have to that one a try, except for the Rye bread, as I cannot eat rye and a number of other grains. I would have to make some spelt bread first.
The meat is called “corned” beef, referring to the corn shaped granules of salt and saltpeter used to cure and preserve the meat. Using saltpeter to preserve meat was common all over the world, but the corned beef we eat today mostly originated in England and Ireland in the 18th Century and was a way to get meat into the bellies of soldiers before it could spoil. The sauce is called Russian Dressing in the US, but at least half of restaurants use a similar salad dressing they already have called Thousand Island dressing. But people should make their own Russian, it’s easy. The secret is adding a couple spoonfuls of fresh squeezed orange juice. The Rueben also must contain sauerkraut, a fermented mix of cabbages left to sit for 21 days.
Wow! They all got the magic of the Ruben right away: the Thousand Island dressing. And I love how half way through this episode, at the 4:12 marker, Gul Sher takes his first big bite, with that kingly black mustache bobbing up and down as he chews, staring at the sandwich curious and intense, trying to figure out what ingredients he tastes. Then he looks straight into the camera, realizes all of the tastes at once, and then his head jolts with a little face-dance of pleasant surprise from its unexpected flavors and textures. Those combinations are what makes a Ruben sandwich one of my very favorites. And I'm sure that Mr. Gul Sher has never even imagined the spicy flavor of a heap of juicy thin slices of corned beef, or the sweet and tangy creaminess of thousand island dressing, or even the chewy savory muskiness of good rye bread with its' caraway seeds (he always enjoys the seeds) - and then the melted Swiss cheese over the sauerkraut "Wow!" that must have blown his mind. What a delightful dancing facial expression he made right at that moment: so surprised, yet still majestic. He looks truly like the quintessential Pakistani Baloch lord straight out of some ancient Indian painting. Also, Nara's English is getting pretty darned good.
So many comments about how it’s not a real Rueben! My take on this is yes, in this video and others, sometimes it’s obvious that what they’re being served probably wouldn’t be considered very close to the real thing by an American or European - but it’s always clearly an honest attempt by the channel, and still exotic to the guys - and that’s close enough for me.
Rye bread - 1/3 lb thin sliced corned beef ( heated ) - Sour kraut ( heated ) - Swiss cheese - Thousand Island/Russian dressing. oh my. If you can find huge rye bread - make it open faced - scale up the ingredients and surround with golden crisp French fries. Wow - while they touch n play I woulda eaten most of theirs - they'd be touching empty air. Swap Turkey breast for corned beef and say hello to Rachel.
I watch many of these 'Tribal People' vids. They are not done poorly, which is why I enjoy them. Which one of these men would you enjoy to host? To me, I would host the guy with the blue headgear. He seems very respectful ( he looks the oldest). But, also, he looks like he has seen action, and survived.
Yes, the Reuben! There are many strong flavors together; sour, sweet, salty. The meat is put on in a thick layer, but it is sliced thin so chewing is not an issue! SO glad you enjoyed them! The sour stringy stuff is pickled cabbage; or sauerkraut. (like Kimchee but not spicy)
I remember when I first started watching this channel and the Dr would offer the food to the cameramen I first assumed it was because he didnt want to eat the food being offered and was trying to push it away. Now i know better and he does it simply as a kind gesture
Mangia !! Mangia !! Eat enjoy !!! I Love it. MONTECRISTO is my favorite. These are like the Pub type sandwiches I used to get in my old neighborhood. The Erie Pub in Dorchester MA. They made/make great sandwiches like this.
The red meat is called "corned" beef. It's raw beef marinated in a substance for about three days which changes it's color to stay red even when cooked afterwards. For cutting into slices for sandwiches it's usually baked in an oven. The other way we eat it is to simmer in water a long time with cabbage, potatoes, carrots, and onions, then eat it cut into whatever size of a piece of meat we want. It's usually simmered with a bit of pickling spices & herbs like we would use for cucumber pickles.
I need a kosher dill pickle with mine. Now I know what i'm having for lunch. I think these things are approachable to everyone, just have to learn how to make it. Be creative with your traditional foods and create new dishes and we can try making those where we live.
Without a doubt this is my favorite group on ur channel 🎧💖 Would love to see u do this again one day w the sauerkraut and mustard. They'd love it I think because it has such a unique taste.
A Rueben usually has sauerkraut. Did their sandwiches have that? Is that why they’re saying onion and sour? Sauerkraut is an acquired taste. I love it.
I enjoy these videos so much! It would be great if viewers could have more details about what exactly is being served. Often there are side sauces that are never described, and sometimes ingredients are changed due to availability and the diets of the "tryers".
A good Ruben sandwich includes corned beef, rye bread, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, thousand island dressing, and a lot of people like to fry them on a grill like a grilled cheese sandwich. They’re really good and popular here in the US. Another sandwich that is similar is called a turkey Ruben. a turkey Ruben includes usually white bread along with turkey, coleslaw, Swiss cheese, and also thousand island dressing but a lot of people like to just keep it off and eat without any dressing. The coleslaw itself usually is enough to take the place of dressing.
This makes me want a New Yorker from Miracle Mile deli which is corned beef and and pastrami on marbled rye bread with cole slaw and 1000 island dressing on it. It’s the ultimate version of the Rueben. It’s so big, one sandwich can feed two people.

That sounds nice, I'll have to that one a try, except for the Rye bread, as I cannot eat rye and a number of other grains. I would have to make some spelt bread first.
The Reuben Kincade has smoked Partridge😜
Keep your Rachel. Have heard of this one before, lol. Give me a Reuben any day. Yummy
I absolutely love the way everyone responds to the names of foods. I truly love Rubens. So Good! I assume sauerkraut is forbidden as it is fermented.
Tahir's speech is often so much more eloquent that the subtitles depict.
Dr. Tahir would always share his food, what a great man !
The King Gul digs right in spilling nothing on his pristine clothes ! I love all you guys .
My all time favorite sandwich! Best if fresh and meat warm, bread toasted hot cheeses melted, then the kraut yummmy and dont forget the mustard!
One of my favorite sandwiches. I'm glad they all seem to enjoy it ☺️
Reubens are my all time favorite sandwiches. Love see these guys trying on for the fish and enjoying them.
I love watching these guys, don't understand why they aren't given a napkin.
7:48 onwards. i see no video or hear any sound . the subtitles keep going however. love this sandwich!
I don't even like sauerkraut, but I love it on Reuben sandwiches!😋
Russian has horseradish. TI doesn't, but might have some hard-boiled egg.
My mouth was watering just waiting for them to try it and hoping they liked it. Love that sandwich.
Not being a rye bread fan, I have to admit that somehow it makes an ordinary Ruben sandwich taste phenomenal.
Yeah, that's the only time I eat rye bread.
Agree.
You should try it with Sourdough! It's delicious!
I love rye bread 🍞😋 BOTH light and dark
@@Sorrowdusk I may like it now that I'm older.
I love me a good Reuben sandwich!
Right!
Same here one of the bet sandwiches
best sandwitches

Rye bread - 1/3 lb thin sliced corned beef ( heated ) - Sour kraut ( heated ) - Swiss cheese - Thousand Island/Russian dressing. oh my.
If you can find huge rye bread - make it open faced - scale up the ingredients and surround with golden crisp French fries.
Wow - while they touch n play I woulda eaten most of theirs - they'd be touching empty air.
Swap Turkey breast for corned beef and say hello to Rachel.
My favorite sandwich 👌🏼. Glad you got to try it. Love your videos
Tribal People - nice that you made them Ruben sandwich , its missing the Sauerkarut.
Awesome array of tastes. Perhaps show the gentlemen how sauerkraut is made/cured??
Looks like it was missing the sauerkraut. I would have liked for them to be told what corned beef is.
I love them for their humble gratefulness and kindness. Tahir is still my favorite.
I just love how genuine these people are.
That is the most anemic Rueben sandwich I ever seen lol
😂😂😂
I had to look up a Rueben just to make sure that I wasn't wrong lol
That Reuben is a crap Reuben!
@@Jesus_Loves_Hitler Needs some lovely rye and sauerkraut.
@@Jesus_Loves_Hitler They seemed to like it, but I'd wager if they had a proper one they'd be really happy.
Corned beef is usually beef brisket cured in salt brine and spices. It was invented to export beef before refrigeration.
A club last week and now a Reuben?! Two best sandwiches America has to offer
Maybe next they'll get French dips.
BLT the King of Sandwiches.
Mangia !! Mangia !! Eat enjoy !!! I Love it.
MONTECRISTO is my favorite. These are like the Pub type sandwiches I used to get in my old neighborhood.
The Erie Pub in Dorchester MA.
They made/make great sandwiches like this.
I love Reubens!!!! now I'm hungry for one!!!!
There's not enough meat in those Reuben sandwiches! A Reuben is packed with beef! Packed!🤨 you ripped these guys off.
You are speaking the truth!
💯Agree! Reuben's are my favorite. Those look 'weak'.
It looked nothing like the thumbnail picture
Looks like missing the sauerkraut, too. Didn't look like rye bread.
I imagine meat is expensive and hard to get "lunch meat" in Pakistan
The dude with the blue headdress loves everything. He’s down for it all!
I love watching these videos! They always make me smile too!
I need a kosher dill pickle with mine. Now I know what i'm having for lunch.
I think these things are approachable to everyone, just have to learn how to make it. Be creative with your traditional foods and create new dishes and we can try making those where we live.
Fun video to watch. Ruben sandwich is my absolute favorite. I'm glad they all loved it.
chaudhary speaking english?!? heck yea!
Without a doubt this is my favorite group on ur channel 🎧💖 Would love to see u do this again one day w the sauerkraut and mustard. They'd love it I think because it has such a unique taste.
I wonder how they would react to a bratwurst on a roll, with sauerkraut, onions, and coarse ground mustard. One of my favorites.
A Rueben usually has sauerkraut. Did their sandwiches have that? Is that why they’re saying onion and sour? Sauerkraut is an acquired taste. I love it.
I'm very surprised they enjoyed it.
Great video but it lost it sound and picture at the end.... look forward to watching these lovely people again soon...
They should have put it on rye bread
I enjoy these videos so much! It would be great if viewers could have more details about what exactly is being served. Often there are side sauces that are never described, and sometimes ingredients are changed due to availability and the diets of the "tryers".
Yet another meal that I've never experienced myself, going to have to make myself one soon though
hot sauce is handy to add to counterbalance the sauerkraut
Go to a fine restaurant and get one. If you make it at home for the first time, it is not going to taste right.
@@Matthew_Loutner delis and even supermarket chains like publix have them
@@toomanyaccounts If it was my first time, I would want the best tasting sandwich I could get.
@@Matthew_Loutner then go to a kosher deli (even thought the sandwich is not kosher) or the publix.
My favorite sandwich 🥪!!!!!! Yummy 😋!!!!!!!!!!
same
So happy they enjoyed it! Did anyone else lose video on or around 7:55?
Now I really want a Reuben sandwich 😁
It makes me happy seeing these gentleman enjoying the food.
Rye bread, mounds of corned beef, sauerkraut, dressing. Grilled.
Edit: Forgot, Swiss cheese!
👌 Damn you, now I'm hungry for sure! 😂🍻
This makes me want a New Yorker from Miracle Mile deli which is corned beef and and pastrami on marbled rye bread with cole slaw and 1000 island dressing on it. It’s the ultimate version of the Rueben. It’s so big, one sandwich can feed two people.
My favorite sandwich. Good times.
I love these fellas, i could chill with them anytime.
Love the gentlemen's reactions as always but calling these Reuben sandwiches makes me want to call the internet police.
I'm glad they enjoyed this. I have enjoyed it since I was a young boy. This was what I would consider the first "adult" sandwich I ordered for myself. I felt so mature 😋
