Making Rom Dumping/Direct Reading easy is what emulations needs the most. It's an Open Secret that 99% of people just pirate the roms. Being able to do itself closes that issue, also incentives actual collecting, which is kinda cool since many of these old systems will start failing soon.

Also no shade, but actually wanting to “own” your entertainment is getting more and more outdated every year. Young people like Netflix, Steam and Spotify more than they like physical discs. Same thing with games. Only the most enthusiast of people will want to actually physically collect their games. Also collecting became more popular the game would be even more expensive and less people would bother.

I would buy a device like this and use it to play GB and GBA games I already have, and for everything else I'd download a ROM and put it on an Everdrive because screw the used prices. Used sales don't give the company any money anyway, so I'm not taking from the companies by downloading a ROM instead of buying from a scumbag scalper.

Also if you have any GBA SP shells laying around they make a nice housing for the submodel. Though some minor shell trimming for the usb-c slot is required. Made mine into a submodel sp not long after I got it and threw a dead screen inside for weight. Totally unnecessary but would recommend.

I've been dumping/restoring GB saves and extracting GB Camera pictures since the late 90s. Back then I used a GBC GameShark that came with a parallel port to linkport cable and a Windows 98 program to use it. I'd take an out-of-game snapshot in the GameShark, transfer it to the PC, and then use an emulator that can import/export GameShark snapshots to convert to standard sav files. For GB Camera, I would then open the sav file in a program called Tile Layer Pro (typically used to extract/insert graphics for NES and GB romhacks), resize it to the right width and scroll until I started seeing pictures.
In more modern times, now that computers don't have parallel ports, I can use the GameShark to take a snapshot, restore it onto a GB flashcart, and then read it off the flashcart into a computer.
Neither of these methods extract the ROM though, but every game's ROM is readily available for download so that won't be a problem unless I get ahold of some prototype cartridge. The GBOperator is definitely quicker and easier though.

I got this thing to use with my Pocket and it works so effortlessly.
Took me about ten minutes, maybe less to archive my 40 GB/GBC/GBA physical collection.
Plus I backed up my childhood saves from all my GBA games. Sadly, wasn’t able to save my Yellow file, but what’re you gonna do? 🤷‍♂️
I’ve never been one to be a fan of emulators, but being able to use my own ROMs is extremely appealing to me. Especially since I can transfer my emulator or Pocket Open FPGA file over anytime I want. It’s like the convenience afforded by something like a switch, but retrofitted to work with old hardware. Even if it isn’t anywhere near as convenient as just plopping the switch in the dock, it’s still pretty easy, and worth it for someone who loves collecting physical media.
Plus anything that can put to bed any of the legal gray area regarding piracy is great. It’s fully legal to use your own ROMs, and hopefully it’ll make emulation and preservation easier in the long run for anyone who wants to try these games.
It’s not like Nintendo is gonna do it. And frankly, Nintendo has no room to be angry about us “pirating” their retro games.
“How can one steal an item from a shop that doesn’t sell that item?”
I can’t just go onto a modern console and buy a copy of Pokémon Ruby, so in my honest opinion, it’s 100% ethically correct to pirate the game if it’s not available in any other way.

We could have done the same thing, there was enough duplicates being sold at the time. We just did not want to hoard them without not being used. We also did not have the E-reader that we have now to actually use them. It is the Original EReader, not a copy like the one that you likely have. There is actually one specific ereader card that has to be scanned with the original ereader. The other variety will not work with it at all. The specific ereader card was a Isabelle animal crossing card if I am recalling correctly. It even listed in the description of the product with all caps on the emphasis on the original ereader only.

07:14 I thought it was funny that you commented on this, because I used to play flash games all the time just like this before ever really becoming a PC gamer and getting used to WASD for movement. My brother always thought I looked like an idiot, but controlling movement with my left hand always felt natural to me.

@@skycloud4802 I like it. I'm in grad school, so I haven't had a lot of time to play with it, but I put it through its paces. The software is extremely user friendly and my eventual plan it to backup all of my GBA games to my computer. I still need to figure out the controller. Ideally I want to use an NSO SNES controller, but worst case I think an 8BitDo will do just fine.

Introduced my daughter to Pokemon and we've been playing for a week or so. I just got my first retro handheld (RG35XX) and I want to move my save file from my classic hardware to it. This is a perfect unit and I can't wait for it to come it. Plus I can backup all my games and save files whenever I need to replace batteries or want to start new games without losing progress of the old saves. The playing on computer is just a huge bonus.

Personally I got the GBxCart because you can buy a cheap GBA cart shell, trim it a little, and use that as a case for it. It's pretty neat and only mildly disturbing to use a cartridge to read another cartridge.

I'm glad devices like this exist, but for me personally, I'm not really interested unless it's running my games straight off the cart, not through emulation. (Of course, IDK how possible that is.)
I also tend to feel that this kind of thing doesn't really help piracy much. I don't think anything will short of making game roms for older games legally available to purchase.

The Analogue Pocket is a portable console that's coming out that plays GB(A) game cartridges without emulation. You can also buy an optional dock to play it on your TV. It's compatible with 8BitDo controllers.

I love the Rumble feature. I have been playing Legend of the River King 2 with Rumble after Running the game through the Gameboy ROM Analyzer for Windows. I changed the cartridge type to 1EH and fixed the header. Rumble was programmed into the Japanese version and just needs to be opened on the English version. The Earthquake at the beginning will let you know if you did it right. I am playing on the USB Smartcard but plan on getting a couple of Flashcarts from ETSY that save without a battery. Nushi Tsuri Adventure-Kite no Bouken English patch also has Rumble. You just need to go to settings in your Epilogue GB Operator and set it to Rumble and have a Rumble controller. Great Fishing games that work way better with Rumble. I am catching fish way more often now. This also worked for me on the Pow Kiddy V90 with the Pocket Go Firmware Update. Have Fun !!!🙂

For the same price, the GB Operator is leaps and bounds better. The better design and software support makes it a device that is LESS niche and I think that is where the hype comes from. I personally plan to buy one as it excites me to get to interact with physical cartridges in this way.
