It's sort of interesting to listen to Rodion Shchedrin's rendition/re-creation of Bizet's Carmen on its own - to see whether it works musically without the visual/dramatic element of Alberto Alonso's choreography. This performance certainly has vibrant colours, sly wit, and is very rhythmic - I am almost certain that the conductor knows the ballet. It's entertaining and enjoyable. I think one can appreciate how Shchedrin describes this as: "a creative meeting of the minds".
