I come back every few months just to rewatch Elizabeth Loscavio's variation (16:25). Such terrific dancing! I wish there was more video of her dancing Balanchine.
Her proportions, her unifying strength, lyrical arms...all of a piece in the service of a united vision for that piece, that time...sorta timeless after all....
Judy Fugate is terrific here -- as is Elizabeth Loscavio -- I also love Viviana Durante in the Man I Love pas de deux. This was from the 1993 Balanchine Celebration.
Who cares? I do! I saw this in Glasgow years ago and it made me so homesick for the US. To see real ballet with an infusion of Broadway-style dancing is wonderful.
What fun!! Just love this wonderful example of Balanchine's genius at work. Such innovative choreography! Remarkable partnering. A Real Pleasure to watch. Thank you so much for posting it.
Classy ❤ Beautiful ❤ Graceful ❤ A Treat for our eyes ❤ Healer for stressful minds ❤ All of the performers/ artists are superb ❤ Music is Fantastic ❤ Concept is Awesome ❤ Choreography at its par ❤ 🎉🎉🎉🎉💐💐💐💐💐💐👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤
I just saw Who Cares performed at the Vail Dance Festival, and I was surprised that the Festival added vocals. I didn't remember that being the way Balanchine staged it. This video confirms that my memory isn't going. The vocals that were added at Vail were a bit strange in that familiar lyrics were updated to make them more gender neutral. "I Got My Man" in "I've Got Rhythm" was updated to "I Got My Friend". It was jarring because the original lyrics were so familiar to us.
Ottima la sensazione dell'occupazione spaziale e del mantenimento del raccordo duale anche nella distanza da parte dei ballerini. Accattivante l'invasione en danceuse nel finale. MOLTO BRAVI TUTTI.BIGHIN GIULIO RENZO
Fugate shines: Russian lyricism plus American speed and sass. Sigh, have to agree about the kiss of death brought to the company by Peter-the-far-from-great, though...
My One and Only, in the best performance you will ever see on earth, is the goddess Elizabeth Loscavio, who does ALL the original steps (otherwise they have never all been done since Marnee Morris, who originated the role, retired); Liza is Jeremy Collins; Clap Yo' Hands is La Fosse, Lopez, Watts, and Fugate. I forgot to rave about Fugate in Fascinatin' Rhythm--almost as good as Patricia McBride.
first variation starts at 5:58 (which I know) Second variation starts at 11.24 (which I don't know) Third variation starts at 16.26 (which I half know)
Does anyone like Polunin? Or is it a gaffe to mention? U-Tube introduced me to Take me to the Church and I was so impressed by his dancing, so heartfelt it took my breath away despite his "bad boy" image. I'm a fan now.
Music of such sophistication, matched by the graceful choreography and dancing. I am amazed how the dancers avoid bumping into each other in the finale.
Ah the dnaces of Balanchine, it is classic american dance, he had vision, and inventiveness but bringing in some of the jazz broadway style dance into ballet peices, as well as his use of more angular holds and staging, but he still kept it ballet, and his dancers knew how to still dance the part not just execute movements to it like they do today so often, even if dancers today are technicaly cleaner, they are slaves to the music, and dont get me started on the lousy danced nutcracker last year
I believe this is from the 93 Balanchine Celebration gala, where various ballerinas from other companies were invited to dance a variation or a pas de deux. Man I Love is the marvelous Viviana Durante with Robert La Fosse; Stairway to Paradise is Lourdes Lopez; Embraceable You is the always emetic and here pathetically aged Heather Watts with Jock Soto; Fascinatin' Rhythm is Judith Fugate; Who Cares? is Melinda Roy with Ronald Perry; (continued)
Sorry--apparently Clap Yo'Hands isn't included here, sadly. And I should qualify that remark about Loscavio's performance by saying that there is, somewhere, although I've never gotten my hands or eyes on it, a video of Marnee Morris dancing the role. Perhaps at the NYC Public Library Dance Collection.
You know, I've yet to see the ultimate ballerina for me, where I don't see technique at all, when the choreography feels completely coincidental to her movement, but Viviana comes the closest.
Sorry, but NO ONE did "My One and Only" like Heather Watts on the Live from Lincoln Center performance in 1983. As in so many other roles, Heather was and always will be the Gold Standard!!!
You are not only wrong, you are visciously incorrect. I wonder how many of her performances you really did see...She was good enough for Mr B and Jerry Robbins, not to mention Peter, of course. I saw hundreds of her performances when I worked for NYCB and if they saw fit to cast her, that is good enought for me.
Pink girl is amazing.... But I really wish she lifted her head and chin up high in the finish pose... Only in pirouettes are u supposed to have ur chin completely parallel to the floor
I have a question, please forgive my ignorance, I see a lot of informed and devoted fans in this comment section. I first saw this recording when I was about ten and knew nothing about ballet. The ballerina at 7:47 is STUNNING. But is it the cut of her costume, or, as I wondered when I first saw this at a young age, is she pregnant? I know body shaming is a big problem in the ballet word, where athleticism is so important next to artistry. In no way do I want to put this beautiful dancer down. She's incredible. This whole cast is.
Alternatively, I have a friend who is a dancer and who is very thin, but she has moderate scoliosis, so her waist line also looks a little unusual. You forget as soon as she starts dancing though.
Who's the dancer who hits the deep pile in the fashion model pose and then just stands there for several seconds as the music continues? What a stunning choice. Is that Loscavio? Lovely.
If any of the Russian companies got a hold of this ballet, imagine what they’d do to it. First, they’d slow it waaay down. Then it would be “Who Knows What This Is?!”
Many bad things happened after Balanchine's death, but Martins utterly and totally destroying the company was the worst--and his elevation of Watts to 'stardom' was and is the avatar of his miserable taste, sensationalism, and complete indifference to the wholesale slaughter of Balanchine. I was subjected to far, far too many Watts 'performances' (although I was tempted to spend every ballet she disfigured in the BAR, I watched them all) and she did nothing but get worse and worse.
Sorry, but EVERYONE who has EVER danced ANY of Watts' 'roles' did them so vastly better as to reveal what an atrocity she truly was. She in every role was and always will be the DROSS Standard: hideously mannered, psychotic, and for the last two-thirds of her 'career' EMBARRASSINGLY technically INCOMPETENT.
That finale was so much fun. Love Balanchine, love Gershwin, love this ballet so much! It doesn't get the recognition it deserves. But eh, who cares?
I have been reading the history of NYCB. With what great difficulty has this glorious company come to it's present state. I am filled with gratitude..
First time I see this ballet. Became an instat fan. Classical, jazzy and definitely a Brodway flavour. Would love to see it live.
Two of the greatest Georges together. Love it!
I am so happy to find this footage of Viviana Durante!
I come back every few months just to rewatch Elizabeth Loscavio's variation (16:25). Such terrific dancing! I wish there was more video of her dancing Balanchine.
ondine217 Same lol. Elizabeth is just fantastic. And so is Judith Fugate.
the best. her timing is what makes it so great. and the flow!
She's so fluid, invested, charismatic & outstanding....love her rhythm & musicality
She's marvelous!
Viviana Durante. What an exceptional talent. I can’t say enough about her.
Her proportions, her unifying strength, lyrical arms...all of a piece in the service of a united vision for that piece, that time...sorta timeless after all....
In which minute can I see Viviana Durante?
@@valentinacarrara2446 She's the first dancer
Judy Fugate is terrific here -- as is Elizabeth Loscavio -- I also love Viviana Durante in the Man I Love pas de deux. This was from the 1993 Balanchine Celebration.
Melinda Roy was AD at a school in Florida I attended for 4 years. When she left in 2011, a bunch of people left, including me.
this was the best full day ever at NYCB.The Balanchine Celebration.was glad to have been there
I went to see Who Cares yesterday. This is infinitely better in all senses: technical, style, costumes, everything!
I love it. amazing!!!
Really? The early 1990s are considered a dip in the quality of dancing at NYCB.
Really sad to hear
Who cares? I do! I saw this in Glasgow years ago and it made me so homesick for the US. To see real ballet with an infusion of Broadway-style dancing is wonderful.
Oh how I love Gershwin and this video!

Elizabeth Loscavio is beyond awesome!
Love Gershwin, Love Ballet, Love the music, the dancing, evrything. Who Cares is perfect
Gershwin,Balanchine and the NYCB three of my favorite things!!! Genius!!!!
Stunning! Judy Fugate is breathtaking!

Me encanta ver a Balairinas y Bailarines del New York City es de lo mejor en Ballet.
What A Wonderful Dance - I"ve never seen Choreograph by George Balanchine before. 🙂
Loved doing this ballet. Did one of the five boys. Balanchine at his best!
Bravo , G Gershwin. Preciosa música

Yes. Loscavio is simply phenomenal and so is Judith Fugate...so sassy, light and natural. I like Patty too but this cast is my fav :)
A real gem Thanks

Elizabeth Loscavio (formerly San Francisco Ballet) just killed her variation. I haven’t seen anyone do it better.

What gorgeous Balanchine choreography! The dancing does it full justice. Wish I could get this on a commercial video.
LOL @petty argument below when just a few scrolls up reveals wonderfully musical dancing that makes people smile
Great to see this....thanks for posting!
I love Viviana Durante, Robert LaFosse, Lourdes Lopez, Heather Watts, Jock Soto, Melinda Roy, Ronald Perry, Elizabeth Loscavio, and Jeremy Collins.

No-one danced the man I love better than Viviane .
I love Viviana Durante, Robert laFosse, Lourdes Lopez,
Vivian durrante. WOW
Viviana Durante is FABULOUS!
Who is the ballerina in pink?
Judith Fugate, a great allegro dancer.
Does anyone know the names of the dancers in "Who cares?", "My One and Only", and "Liza"? Imo, they were the most genuine and spectacular.
+Arabella Tan The cast is listed in the opening credits.
Which dancer is Heather Watts? Hard to tell since it’s blurry
