Arkadia - How to Play 🎲 and Is It a Gem? 💎

  • In Arkadia, from Rüdiger Dorn and Ravensburger, players place buildings and workers on a board in order to build a castle. Okay, ignore that setting and the almost stereotypical "dry euro" cover. Underneath is a clever combination of stock manipulation and polyominoes, well before the current popularity of polyominoes in board games. Arkadia was nominated for Game of the Year in 2007 and did not have a printing since, so it's likely unknown to a newer generation of board game enthusiasts...
    Board Gems highlights older board and card games that are still great games today, and deserve to not be forgotten!

    Great video as always. I find it interesting that board games with a beige/brown palette (often featuring a 17th century nobleman looking at a plan or map on the box cover) appeal to me a lot more than colourful alternatives like Zombicide or Radlands. There's something charming and quaint about them and I must be associating this style of graphic design with the types of board games that I prefer. In comparison, some of my best dining experiences have been in drab looking family run restaurants and it's probably because they focus on the food itself and not the decor.
    I'd like to try this game. The timing of the shields reminds me a little of Heaven and Ale (evolved from Palaces of Carrera) in which you need to time when your crops both score and pay out. There's a tension between "if I hold out a big longer, I could have more tiles to score" and "I really need cash soon!" In Arkadia's case, the biggest difference is that there may be a shared incentives to drive a particular colour to a higher value and I think that must make for a more interactive experience.

      You sound like one of my people. I love Arkadia, I love Carrara, I love old Euros and beige/drab looking games. I can't explain it either but it is true that this is my kind of game.

    Wow just discovered your channel and subscribed. Being a 51 year old board gamer I love to find these older gems and so few are focused on these classics and are only focused on what’s new. I checked your video list and don’t see a TOP 10 - I’d love to know your best of the best of these older games! 😁

      Thank you! I find it so hard to compare different board games to do a Top Ten. I know that's kind of the expected format of content, I know other RUclipsrs do it, but anything I do feels quite arbitrary. Like, how do I compare Ave Caesar with The Rose King with Kingdoms, three of my favourite games? They have completely different "use cases" - I can say one is better than another in a particular situation, but not overall.
      Well, I intend to take a small break for the summer, and during that period I'll probably put together a handful of one-off videos without a set schedule. I'll give some thought to maybe doing something more or less along those lines. Cheers!

    I have a request. for what I beleive to be one of the best family board games ever made, and one that has never failed to impress non-boardgamers. Based on your love of Downfall of Pompeii, I think you likely enjoy it a lot but am curious as to what you think os: "Survive! Escape from atlantis!" or maybe one of the various offshoots like the european versions, like waddingtons etc. if you've played them.
    Love your videos and enjoy seeing remarks about stuff not in the popular "hotness" so to speak. I feel the majority of the best of the best is behind us at the moment, and finding the good stuff means exploring like an archaeologist, and not at Target.
    I bought Arkadia about 16 years ago, and my GF at the time really enjoyed it as much as I did. We didnt think it was dry looking, and we really love ameritrash titles. Ravensburger just goes above and beyond when they produce a game. *Looks at "Indigo" with yearning eyes*

      @BoardGems  9 месяцев назад

      Yup, I'm familiar with Survive. I like Pompeii better, but Survive is good fun too. There's quite a few versions I've played, including Escape from Atlantis which used a kind of cool spinner. Unfortunately I don't have any of them anymore, except for Stronghold's outer-space one which I have at the restaurant. So I won't cover it anytime soon but I'll add it to the request list. Cheers!

    Quick suggestions for your next videos: Thebes or Maka Bana.

    First of all, love your analysis of any game, gem or not.
    I don’t want to sound like that guy but I couldn’t consider adding a game like this to my collection when I find myself looking to streamline my collection to include only the very best of games (to me). I’ve played and owned over 250 games over the years and for my situation, I simply don’t have room to keep all the games I’m initially interested in purchasing.
    For me, any new game to me, regardless of when it came out, has to stand out somehow. Mechanically, it has to bring something interesting to the table.
    I don’t want to come off as dismissive to old games, El Grande has a good seat on one of my more used shelves. Calimala, Black Friday & Mombasa are others that we enjoy and will not part with.
    Although there are still many games that still hold up today, I personally find that my wife and I are enjoying some of the heavier games that are coming out and that have come out over the past several years.
    Games like Dominant Species ,some of the Uwe Rosenberg & Lacerda games (Not all), & particularly some of the most recent Vladimir Suchy games that I’ve come across.
    One game that may or may not be up you alley though, is Craftsmen. It’s a heavy one and I don’t know if you know of it but It’s one of my favourites and if you ever come across it, I’d love to see you cover it. Kind of hard to find though. Best to you.
    Regards,
    RJ

      That's completely fair. I definitely want to remind viewers that this channel shouldn't be treated as a Buyer's Guide. I think we hobbyists are somewhat conditioned to think that a reviewer saying they like a game means they should go out and buy it. Certainly there are board game reviewers on RUclips that push the consumerist aspect of the hobby, whether on purpose or not. I hope I don't come across that way.
      I originally dismissed Arkadia years ago, because it "didn't stand out" and I had to make room for new games. But I regretted it, I realised later that this type of game is exactly what I love in board games. For any one viewer, not every game will spark interest and further investigation - but every game I cover might be of interest to someone out there.

      I’ve watched enough of your videos to know where you’re coming from. I wasn’t saying that this was a bad game either, just probably not for me.
      These titles are definitely worth have a light shined on them though. So thanks for that. Cheers.

      @@BoardGems Ha! Caveat emptor and all that. I got a good price. There will be no regrets even if I discover it isn’t for me. My sense is it has the right amount of complexity and interaction. Shut up and SD’s last review made a good point about most new Euros being just okay exercises in colourful spread sheeting. Thus I think your channel provides a valuable insight into past substance over the cult of the new. Thanks!

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  11 месяцев назад +1

      Do you know, that's the first ever SU&SD video I've watched? I'm a little embarrassed. But it was recommended to me, and the point made was bang-on. These mid-to-heavy Euro puzzles are fun, up to a point. But the style is common and each title is interchangeable. JASE (Just Another Soulless Euro) is an acronym that's been around for a long time, and it seems to get more and more fitting as time goes on and Euros evolve further in the "soulless" direction...
