Heartley had a chequered past however when he was given the captaincy he really did switch on I don’t think he was the most skilled player but he was good enough for international and his leadership kept him in there and all the analysis he now does for BT I actually think he’s very observant and a very intelligent pundit
Never liked Hartley. Guy's always been vicious and borderline psycho. He accumulated 60 weeks of bans in total in his career. That's more than a calendar year.
I agree, it was embarrassing to have him as our captain, as he was never capable of playing within himself, I did feel that he was made captain for two reasons, to actually place some responsibility on his shoulders, and as he was clearly our best hooker, to ensure that he was not accountable to a different captain who would not be able to handle him.

From this perspective, it seems a bit odd, that he went with the soft-spoken and gentlemanly Tom Curry for that odd game, and now with the critically thinking, almost an intellectual type of Courtney Lawes, but I guess it worked because Lawes is still an intimidating dominant tackler on the field with full tattoo sleeves, even though he's an articulate and coherent autonomous thinker off the field.

He is/was a bloody bastard to play against, niggling, slagging off, trying to incite a reaction, playing right on the edge of the laws, bloody infuriating nuisance. And he’ll defend his teammates both vocally and physically. But one thing he’s not is a cheating, cheap shot merchant.
gatland was seriously fucked over by the blazers at the irfu and has a legitimate beef with them...but it does seem to have spilled over into his dealings with irish players over the years...especially some of his lions selections. i would say when it comes to playing against ireland he is extra motivated to beat us. but i wouldnt say he hates irish people...just not particularly fond of the irish rugby setup and its reps

He was a heineken cup finalist in 2012, he won a six nations and grand slam with Ireland. He played for the British and Irish Lions. His career was cut short at 28. If his body had stood up he probably would have won another 2 6 nations. Absoulte quality player.
