Consequently this camp was the catylyst to purge the upper rugby echelons of all the fools who thought this was a good idea. Unfortunately the whistleblower on this camp comitted suicide eventually.
A camp designed for elite units. Not "normal" civilians. We love to think our Springboks are tough and they are, but nowhere near those guys. So maybe not the best fit.
I heard him say on another interview that it wasn't that bad and that it's small comparing to the army some guys had to do. Here he only answers very specific entertainment questions. Context.
Well, sure. I'm sure if you took the average Israeli 20 year old, they would have competed it easily. But these were professional athletes who has never been through anything like this.
@@randomlyfactual1943 I’m saying all those units ( didn’t say they were standard military. I grouped them all together so you’d assume I’m talking SF). Those boot camps . Selections are all Similar in structure. Nothing new
The Bok coach at the time, Rudolph Straeuli, was an absolute dinosaur straight off the ark. Worst coach in SA's history.
Agree 100%. And a face that makes Kwagga Smith look like a brain surgeon.
*Harry Viljoen has entered the chat*
@@nicgeld I'm on the floor with laughter. Great comment!
@@randomlyfactual1943 Rassie called Harry Viljoen "a businessman who didn't follow rugby". Enough said.
Nah the worst was Alister coetzee by a long long long way
“I’m pretty sure they aimed to miss” 😂
That camp sounds like a Horror Movie!
back in my day, the train was at midnight, and it went to Georgia
Midnight train to Georgia... Gladys Knight?
cumtown reference
cmtown, gay guy
Hilarious recount of events 😅

The circumstance around his death is very sad.
T0 John keeping well from Mel J0y Miss you so much

I can’t display the disgust publicly for the fool, the man was an embarrassment to Bok rugby.
Who was an embarrassment ?
@@thejediknight203 None other than Straeuli. See accurate comment by Grant below.
Absolutely!!!
Why Boer so strong
Obviously John never went through the same, or any national army service like many of us had to in SA

He was a professional rugby player, not a conscript. Kamp Staaldraad was always a stupid idea.
Staaldraad was not normal army, though; it was more like Recce training.
@@dirksteenkamp6757 exactly. It has bugger all to do with rugby. So stupid

Kamp-staaldraad was a great idea at the wrong time, it should have happened much earlier and we would probably have had another WC.
Funny asf!
Standard military bootcamp. Vasbyt. Paras. Royal Marines. Seals. SAS . Recces. Nothing new. Shows the difference ?
Paras, Royal Marines, SEALs and SAS are not "standard military units."

None of those units trains naked or has comparably futile exercises like that involving the rugby ball inflation.
