Absolutely brilliant short story. One of the best of Stephen King's stories. I was damn near having a panic attack at the end when I read the original story.
Found out about this story cos Emesis Blue was compared to it, mostly for the Respawn Machine experience being similar the Jaunting. Some zombies seen in said film are actually called Jaunts in the script, likely as a direct reference. "It's an eternity in there"
Found this through a video essay by Crowmudungeon comparing this and Junji Ito's 'Long Dream'. In a way I'm glad I 'read' (or, well, heard) this story because it's so well written and good, but on the other hand it is very haunting. I will admit the speech isn't the best but even so, I'm more here for the story itself and there's something about The Jaunt that is truly horrifying.
"Gully Foyle is my name And Terra is my nation. Deep space is my dwelling place And death my destination." --- Alfred Bester, the SF novel that inspired Mr. King
I have an unreasonable fear of things that are very large (like the universe, or, actually, anything I can't see the end of--even a long road freaks me out) and of great expanses of time (the eventual heat-death of the universe terrifies me, although if ANYTHING is an "After I'm Dead" problem it's that). So the thought of spending an almost-eternity doing ANYTHING makes me panic--let alone just existing in a discorporeal state without any sensory input. Jesus.
jesus in omnipotent, and infinite, he calls hem to be : i am, and i was,yes i WAS and i am the one i will BE. jesus is living simont. in the past he future and the current. he calls himself to have no end and no begining. hes living infinitly in every microscopic millisecond from infinite backwards in time to infinit forwards in time. I heard about this story I another youtuber's video that was going over the topic of Hell. I *IMMEDIATELY* searched it and found myself here. That ending... on par with I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream... whew...
I've often thought about time displacement like this, but a little different. What if thru cybernetic brain implants, which are even around today, you could hook someone up to some sort of machine and with the click of a mouse, "send" this person on some 10,000 year journey in their mind, lasting only mere milliseconds in reality. You could program it and send them to a lake of fire, flying thru a cactus patch, sliding down a 20 foot razor blade to land in a pool of alcohol and then do it again and again for seemingly... eternity. It's awfully frightening to ponder because I wouldn't doubt that there are people more than evil and cruel enough to spam the button over and over again on some poor fool, just for amusement, and the machine would be used for far more insidious things other than punishment. I sure do hope we never cross such lines...😮
The trick would be to rewrite the story into what the AI can handle, but such amounts of unpaid work are already a pestering ordeal when it is just a short story.
It was pretty obvious early on that this is not a biological human. Several words were pronounced incorrectly for their context. For example, when describing the pencil that went through the first jaunt the narrator called it Lead as in leading a horse to water not Lead as in the metal.
Seems like in that universe, the US wasn’t doing so well and was being robbed by the “oil cartel”, plus having a nuclear war and an accelerate environment crisis based on the most extreme early 80s predictions.
It mentions the oil companies taking over the research, so presumably they made enough profit to warrant the change. You’re right though, it’s very unlikely
I dislike it, personally. It makes some of the pacing weird and the communication between characters falls flat. Also, lead (as in the Lead Curtain the scientist used) being pronounced as both 'Lead' and 'Leed' bothers me so very much...
[VAGUE SPOILER WARNING] I mean did you think it would end happily, or if not happily then at least mundanely? Perhaps it could've been less bloody but considering the buildup, the ending made sense. I thought it was a really good story, one of his better ones. I'm not much a fan either but he has some good ones.
Maybe I missed something but what is so terrifying about this story? I get things happen and all but this isn't terrifying. People act like this story is keeping them up at night or something.
The unknown. What would happen to you if you didn't pass-out. The fact a child loses their mind, what does longer than you think mean? You have this tech that they don't fully understand, that can do unfathomable things to you, and they use it for causal business transportation.
@AdeptusMumbles I guess so. I think my mindset is just your messing with the fabric of space and time. Of course something like this could and probably will happen.Just be glad something like Event Horizon didn't happen.
@@super1million11I think that’s actually a good way to visualize it, in a easy to visualize way for anyone who knows and can recall that scene. Except the fact that it essentially lasts for what amounts to a never ending infinite and eternal, conceptually unfathomable amount of time. Mere thought and internal monologue without any trace of sensory input for your entire existence. There’s plenty of people who have blown a gasket or popped a fuse or two just doing sensory depravation exercises, like a tank or one of those 100% fully sound proofed rooms where all you can hear is your heartbeat and your breath passing thru your esophagus. Spend enough time inside that place and you’ll hear your blood moving thru your veins and your own brain synapses firing as loud as the head exploding voice of God himself. I once had twisted my left ring finger in a brawl years ago that caused the tendons on the end of my finger to tear off completely. The result of this was not being able to voluntarily flex or bend the last joint in my finger when I grip anything. If I spend even a couple seconds thinking about it or paying any attention to it, giving any sort of awareness to it for longer than just a moment, I start to lose my shit completely. It’s like being severely claustrophobic, but just in the end of my finger. A mere 5 seconds in the absence of sensory input or functional expression thru just the end of my finger is all it takes to drive me *absolutely bat shit*. Can’t imagine being Ricky, nor do I even want to.
As per all Stephen king stories, absolutely brilliant - but what a shame the reader is so inept. He obviously can’t read more than two words ahead at any time, so sentences run into each other and needless pauses mid-sentence. It needs the guy who read dr sleep!
Why people don't see that mice are living beings, with nervous system and feel pain, in the same way we do??? This is just creepy tail of animal cruelty 🤬

This is so terrifying. Would be a great black mirror episode
Already a junji ito short story

Machine that make inmates sit only in their mind where there would be like thousands of years but in outside world would last like an hour
they explore this concept in some Black Mirror episodes - notably White Christmas
Read "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream". Something similar happend at the end of it
"AI Speak" needs to be honed to a sharper presentation. Some words and contexts are misrepresented.

I agree with you
The trick would be to rewrite the story into what the AI can handle, but such amounts of unpaid work are already a pestering ordeal when it is just a short story.
Eh, it's free🤷♂️
The AI voice messes up the pacing.
When he comes across the word "lead" as pronounced led, he keeps saying it as if it is pronounced leed.
didnt even realize this was AI

As if the government would let an invention like that out. It would bankrupt all of their oil tycoon backers
Seems like in that universe, the US wasn’t doing so well and was being robbed by the “oil cartel”, plus having a nuclear war and an accelerate environment crisis based on the most extreme early 80s predictions.
It's implied that in this alternate universe things went down the shithole, so I guess they were desperate.

I really like how you’ve used AI text to speech it gives it a more sci-fi feeling. Great work 🙏🏼
It's getting considerably better, isn't it? Some of the artifacts are a bit disturbing, though. Like the long breaths, one of which is at 18:23
It’s just laziness - no work was done by the uploaded

Just listen to skeleton crew audiobook not Ai

Hehehe, gas-passers
There is nothing terrifying or horrifying about this.
I wish could complain about this ending, but it spoils too much. I don't understand the Stephen King fans.

Is this text to speech?
I was wondering the same thing!! The pacing is weird at points that make no sense.
I think this is an AI voice
Awful AI reading, go listen to this anywhere else.
Suggestions?

The repeated pronunciation of "lead" as LEED outshadows the horror of the story itself.
