  • From Bob Gibson - Where I'm Bound (1964)
About Bob Gibson: Samuel Robert ("Bob") Gibson (November 16, 1931 -- September 28, 1996) was a folk singer who led a folk music revival in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was known for playing both the banjo and the 12-string guitar. He introduced a then largely unknown Joan Baez at the Newport Folk Festival of 1959. He produced a number of LPs in the decade from 1956 to 1965. His best known album, Gibson & Camp at the Gate of Horn, was released in 1961. His songs have been recorded by, among others, the Limeliters, Peter, Paul and Mary, Simon & Garfunkel, the Byrds, the Smothers Brothers, and the Kingston Trio. His career was interrupted by his addiction to drugs. After getting sober in 1978, he attempted a comeback, but the musical scene had changed and his traditional style of folk music was out of favor with young audiences. He did, however, continue his artistic career with albums, musicals, plays, and television performances. In 1993 he was diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). He died from PSP on September 28, 1996 in Portland, Oregon. FROM WIKIPEDIA

In 1964, I performed this song before about 1500 students at Northern Illinois University. I finished my set with it, and I was amazed that I got a 5 minute standing ovation. As it turned out, that was the high point of my musical career. BUT, I'LL ALWAYS HAVE THAT MOMENT.

I've seen some of the greats. Folk, jazz, rock, blues, soul, classical, bluegrass, u name it, but the one artist I'd give anything to see again is this man, BOB GIBSON!

Boy, does Bob Gibson ever convey the feeling of this song. I sure do wish he had been around longer. So underestimated. Missed him entirely in college in the 70's but you can be sure he was around performing. My loss, our loss. Thanks for putting this out.

I never heard about this artist before today... This is really 60s cool US folk music. Thanks. This has been covered by Jeff Buckley in the 90s

All in all, I would agree with Billtip down there- the best version of this song ever, although it doesn't have a lot of soul... but it has some and feeling and wasn't he the first folksinger outside of Lomax to commercially record this song. Dink's Song is my song and Bob Gibson is my man, may he rest in peace!

This is by far the best version of this song ever recorded.

Funny because I feel more attracted to other versions of the song I have heard. But that's ok. Everyone has their own opinion

billtipp I couldn't agree with you more about this. BY FAR the greatest version of this song ever. Van Ronk's version may have been more popular but no one, in my opinion, conveyed the feeling that Bob Gibson did.

I kind of feel like, and I may be biased here, but Dave van Ronk puts so much more passion into this song.

In 1964... having to much soul... was frowned upon.. heck they wouldn't even show Elvis on TV from the mid belly down 😆 his dancing was toooooo "sexy" 😆🤣😁
