Character instruments and their tunes - Mother 3

- Each playable character has an instrument. When you hit an enemy, that character plays a brief melody part on their instrument. If you combo another hit, another melody part will play, and another one if you time a 3rd hit. Then it just loops these melody parts (creating a melody), until you reach 16 hits or mess up.
Each time you are presented with the choice menu, where you can choose what to do next, the game randomizes the next tune for each character. By reverse-engineering it, I found a code that sets the first party member's tune:
0201DB2A:XXXX, where XXXX is a number from 0 (first) to 5 (last). Any number above 5 will play sounds that don't belong there, which can lead to some interesting results, specially with Duster (since he's the last on the list, and from there on, are completely unrelated sounds)! If the code doesn't work for you, try setting the character as the only one in your party (using the debug room).

I tried to search the address for the other party members' instruments, but I couldn't find it. If it's just the standard party - Lucas, Kumatora, Duster, Boney - I can find the address for Kumatora and Boney (Duster's doesn't change, remember), but if the order is switched, even if it's Kumatora trading places with Duster, the addresses go wild. I couldn't figure out a pattern on such a subtle change in the party, much less adding characters like Salsa or Claus. So, at least for now, I can only provide the address for the first character, which seems to be the same address all the time.
Curiously, due to a glitch, Duster's tune isn't randomized like the rest - it's always 0. Duster has 6 tunes like everybody else, and with this code, the unused tunes can also be heard. The folks behind the English patch said they don't plan on fixing this on a new release.
I used the Debug room to change characters and recorded the 3 notes of each tune of each character with Zombeat. AFAIK, these melodies where made in 120BPM, which is Zombeat's tempo.

Salsa's synthesizer: 1:26 (or cuíca, as pointed out by TheSaxophoneStar)

Rather ironic that Duster is the only playable character who's a musician, yet he has the least musical diversity in battles.

Well, he does play bass, which is a backup instrument. Makes sense that he wouldn't play a more complex melody given that thats not what the bass is for.

@@Neogears1312 Maybe Flint might have been for the chp 1-4-8 cuz in the files Flint is able to use all of Lucas's weapons maybe the idea was scraped for being a copy paste thing cuz in the debug menu he can replace characters some times on accident and the game won't crash and why put him on a high lvl (also I think you should have a chance to swap out characters after beating the game so we play as Claus more)

@Lochlan Smith you wouldn’t be able to play the lower harmonies with it but yeah you could just play the main melody with one finger
the songs that are related to Hinawa usually have the same electronic piano, so that would probably be her instrument
a harp comes to mind, given that Claus has a string instrument

Y'know, I always assumed Duster only had one attack tune due to his leg handicap. It sounds weird, but I imagined it that way for some reason.
Still, his tunes are badass. All of these are, really. I love the battle system for this game so much! Sometimes I just listen to combo videos just for the sake of hearing the instruments. Wish more games did stuff like this, honestly.

I think the ‘Wacky’ instrument noise would have ruined the tone of the final battle. That’s the only reason I can think of for removing it in the final fight.

kumatora's electric guitar always was my favorite, but flint, duster & lucas' instruments always were great to me too. rhythm based combo system is why i love this game

Lucas: 00 (Goes best with pretty much every song)
Duster:05 (Goes best with Back Beat Battle, and slow pace songs) My favorite out of them all!
Kumatora:04 (Goes best with fast song, and Stringent, near the end)
Boney:03 (Goes best with Mambo De Battle)
Claus:02 (Goes best with pretty much every song)
Flint: 01 (Goes best with slow songs and Dangerous guys)
Salsa:01 (Goes best with And, el Mariachi, tragic reconstruction, and dry guys)

Claus has the best tune
In the original game, Duster only plays the first instrument only while attacking. If im not wrong, this was fixed in the english translation 1.2.

Some enemies have "Double attacks" if I remember correctly? I know the screws in thunder tower had a weird sound to them.

Yeah, it's notorious for being difficult to combo on an emulator. You'll have to either get used to the weird timings, get the game on a physical cartridge, or use cheat codes.

@RandyTheZeldaFan I tried looking for other addresses, but I just couldn't reach a conclusion. I updated the description explaining it, but basically, if it's the default party, the values aren't too hard to find (except for Duster's), but if the party changes slightly, even if it's the order of some characters, the values are completely different. The only address I could find that always works is the first party member's.
