IT'S BEUTIFUL!!! but i'm only a ten year old girl who just started today, so maybe i went to far ahead of myself. (also i'm using my granparents account, that's why the name is tony)
Since you’re just a beginner, you may want to start with easier projects like a pin cushion or a pillow, or if you’re really into making shirts use another video! This video does not teach you how to make the pattern, make measurements, etc. I’d recommend getting patterns from the sewing section at Walmart. Hmu with any questions you got!
It would also be helpful to avoid dark colours especially black. Any light is just absorbed and details become invisible. Also, there are so many way in which to mess up joining bias tape that way. Trust me, I have made most of them!
Press the hem on the sleeve in the flat, but don't actually hem it until after sewing the side seams. This results in a much more professional looking sleeve hem.
Why did you not stay stitch the arm holes and the neckline ? This is a must to prevent distortion and stretching of those areas. Also why a 1/2" seam when the standard is 1.5cm or 5/8" ? I'm afraid this video would be very confusing for a beginner.
Especially when sewing more stretchy material, its better to use zig zag stitch so the shirt stretches with your body. Otherwise the stitch is weak and can easily break (this happened to me and i felt upset i would have to go back and fix it). Also try to match the thread color as mucj as you can to the shirt bc if some of your stitches show because they werent close enough together each stitch, that other color will show
Easier way to sew in sleeves....before you sew in side seams! You will find it easier & will have less or no puckers to deal with! You can even sew in the sleeves without pinning too!
Yes. Thank goodness some videos assume a basic knowledge of cutting out a pattern and using a sewing machine; otherwise they would all be 60-90 minutes.
I love Angela Wolf. I wish she would do a complete sewalong on Craftsy video. Maybe an intermediate to advanced dress or slacks pattern. Like Gertie's dress or Susan Khalje's The couture dress. A nice, long class.
Great idea! Have you found the commercial bias tape shrinks the first time you wash it, after it's been applied to a garment? If so, how much? I've always made my own bias tape, but I'm getting lazy after 40 yr of sewing!!
My problem is my side seams won’t get even! Idky. Like the front of the shirt is shorter than the back of the shirt ☹️ any advice?? Because my shirt isn’t stretchy
not a professional but i i think because when you are sewing the front and back shoulders connect so i think the back will always be a lil longer before sewing
I’m mad because I don’t have a sewing machine yet(they’re legit sold out everywhere during quarantine) and I need to make my dress by July 3rd for the 4th of July. I’m sewing by hand but it’s taking way too long and I’m not skilled enough
I'm perplexed. The bias tape does not stretch so how can you sew a straight edge against a curved edge and not get puckers? Shouldn't you cut notches around all curves to prevent puckering? I learned from Professor Pincushion, Craftsy, and Sure Fit Designs, U of Fashion and others. Thanks so much for your time.
When applying bias tape to curves, you basically have to squash it a little at the inner, smaller curve (the edge of your neckline if you're binding a neckline), and stretch it out at the outside curve, and that takes care of it and helps it lie flat. With a bit of practice, you get the hang of it and just do that automatically. So you may still want to clip your curve if you're, say, using the tape like a facing and have seam alowances that you turn inside; but when you're using bias tape to bind an edge (without seam allowances at the curve you're finishing), you don't have to clip anything - indeed you shouldn't, because that would distort your curve. And bias tape does stretch because: Depending on the weave / type of the fabric, it usually does have some "give" on the bias - it's not stretch like lycra is stretch, in that the yarn / material itself does not stretch, but it does stretch as a fabric on the whole. (There are some tightly-woven exceptions, but pre-made bias tape is not made out of them, obviously.) You can test it out and see for yourself with some woven fabrics - grab it in your hands in two places along the true bias (that is, diagonally at a 45 degree angle to the grainline) and pull - in most cases, it will stretch out to some degree. Picture it like this: when the fabric lies straight, the woven yarns crossing over one another are like on a square grid (especially obvious if you're working with a plain/tabby weave). The yarns (if not stretchy in themselves) won't alow the woven fabric to stretch when they're lying straight next to one another. But when it's pulled on the bias, the interlinking yarns that create the weave will shift - it's no longer a square grid. The yarns are not stretching as such, their length remains the same, but the points at which they're interlinked are now at a greater distance from one another in the direction at which you pull. What stretches is not the yarns themselves, but the space between them. Like when you compare a diamond-shape to a square with the sides being the same length - even though the length of the sides is the same, the distance between two opposing corners is bigger in a diamond. Hope that helps you understand. :-) Ergo: fabric cut on the bias is much more pliable than a straight-cut strip of the same woven fabric. Not just in bias tape: think slinky evening dresses that hug the figure. It has some disadvantages, too - when you have seams cut on the bias (not just true bias), they can stretch out even when you don't want them to, so you have to sew them more carefully and maybe stabilise them with some fusible interfacing or some tape sewn down (not bias tape :D ) if they will be under more stress (better-made garments often have some tape sewn down along shoulder seams, which are slanted somewhat). Well, I hope this was exhaustive but not too overwhelming. :-)
First of all this is not the best pattern for a beginner because of the bias neckline and set in sleeves. This is Grainline's Scout Tee. If you are a beginner, pick a different pattern. I have heard that Itch to Stitch has great instructions. Maybe her Melrose Top? I like her patterns and have a few. Grainline's Scout is a great pattern and I love it because it is basic, a pullover, and made for a woven. Second, Grainline Studios uses a 1/2" seam allowance not 5/8" which is a standard of the big 4 pattern companies: Simplicity, McCalls, Vogue, and Butterick which dominated the home sewing industry for years. Most independent pattern companies use the 1/2" or even 3/8" to 1/4" seam allowance when drafting patterns for the home market. Grainline has great patterns but not the best for beginners because her directions. But the drafting is great. I, too, prefer doing a flat sleeve insertion. Also, I would complete the neckline while flat before sewing the side seams. It just makes it easier. I have been sewing and pattern making for 53 years. This doesn't make me an expert, just someone that has made many mistakes and hopefully learned. So that is my 2 cents. :o) Hope it helped someone.
Im making this for my furry costume bc she is a wolf that loves purple and im making this white and a purple flower skirt bc shes wholesome ans sweet and nice

Tysm! I needed this because I made a shirt two times and failed both times. I really need this to make a cosplay so ty for this tutorial 😁
what cosplay are u sewing?
So much easier to put the sleeve in before the side seam, hem sleeve first and sew sleeve seam and side seam together
Press the hem on the sleeve in the flat, but don't actually hem it until after sewing the side seams. This results in a much more professional looking sleeve hem.

Her stitching is very neat. don't expect the same results if you are just starting out.

A woven fabric with no zip or other opening. Is it really going to be possible to get this top on?
gillian bc my question,too.
This does not need a zip. It is fairly loose, with a large neck opening.
It will not be easy, but it does look better without a zip.
just on your head or one leg haha
Thank you for teaching
I want to learn how to stitch clothes...😂😅
