I completely agree with you, however, the issue being, mainly for Americans, is the EPA. With these little engines come high standards for MPGs. This system is flawed af.
We do have affordable sports cars like the Gr86/BRZ and Matia, but people constantly complain about them not having enough power. More power equals a higher price tag, simple as that. Stop complaining about power, and they'll produce more affordable sports cars. People want supercar horsepower but do not want to pay supercar prices.
@@tinhinnh They make 300hp people want 400hp they make 400 hp people want 500hp. It never ends. These people complaining are not the consumers they are just broke kids crying who never have any intention or money to buy these performance cars and support the car companies.
If they make a Sienna EREV with 100+km of all EV range they can take my money. As long as they have something like the GM Volt fuel age and a sealed fuel tank systems. GM shot themselves in the foot when they pulled their Voltec system seeing how Toyota is banking on a similar system now and nobody is buying the Bolt anymore.
As you say, the regulations need to change, no way that such high persantage will be BEVs by 2030. Hopefully the regulators here in Europe will change that too
Yea im super interested, but thinking about dealing with the dealership markups and all their fee’s im prolly not even gonna bother. When i was interested in a gr corolla toyota wanted me to enter a raffle to win the chance to buy the car over msrp…. What a joke.
After seeing Toyota corporate's responses with denied warranty claims on the GR Corolla because they went 114 mph I would NEVER, EVER buy a performance vehicle from that company. That's setting aside the fact that their reliability as a whole has turned into an absolute dumpster fire with the V35a and these new GR Corolla fires.
That’s what happens when people want to the other Japanese automakers to go out of business. I mean, it’s also the automakers’ faults that they’re not doing as well as Toyota, but still. Toyota being a monopoly of reliability is horrible. The GR Corolla scandal only proves that.
I've got my Now and Laters and my Coke Zero and I'm buckled in !!! Let's go !!! Both the Celica and MR2 look promising but concepts always are. I remember seeing the concept VW New Beetle and concept Ford Mustang at the New York auto show. Both were brilliant. I was especially impressed with the New Beetle. It managed to capture the zeitgeist of the old Beetle but with more severe, minimal geometry. The resulting car was a dumbed down dud. Hated the thing. I felt the same way about the Ford Mustang. Automotive manufacturers can make cars as great as the classics but they choose not too. Automotive designers are handcuffed by the suits who care more about profits than cars.
For corporate vehicles where the owners are given company fuel cards, for the most part when privately owned PHEV are purchased people plug them in. Few folks are paying extra for a PHEV/EREV just to pay even more out of pocket to fill it up with fuel.
Just bought an LC250 1958 for my wife to replace her 2021 Venza. Hopefully at some point there will be a plug in hybrid LC250 by 2028 also and I can get here that and turn the 1958 into a rock crawler lol 😂

It looks sad. 😂 it looks like the car is saying I have to spend my life as a Toyota? Boo when it should be saying, I could spend my life as a Toyota? Hell yeah!!!! in other words, they need to change the shape of the grill!
Kirk - we need another comparison between the Toyota Celica, MR2, GR86, and Supra. At first glance, it looks like Toyota is just trying to grab more of the low to mid cost sport car market share. What type of audience is Toyota trying to target for each model?
They'll build the MR2 like an Evo with a 2.2l stroker ,with 4bolt main, rigidity to the block, and oil pan, as well reinforced chassis, forged wheels, twin scroll 66 or /72mm turbos, 84×84 mm stroke and bore and it'd hold 600 awhp no issues even 800+HP with an upgraded clutch and larger intercooler with iridium spark plugs and wahlah!
Those PHEVs in Europe would have less electric range in EPA. Those chinese long range PHEVs are not good. They are not good as a BEV because very short range (at best 100 mile real range), and they also aren't good as hybrids because the ICE is very small (3 cylinder with under 1.5L on a 5000lb car) is used only to go to a charging station to charge your battery. Doesn't make sense for a PHEV to have more than 60-70 miles of EV range.
While it’s technically possible for them to produce a 600hp engine, for profitability reasons, the actual output might be between 200-300hp. The vehicle’s weight will be kept light, ensuring it still offers plenty of power for an enjoyable driving experience. Although there are rumors suggesting a 600hp model, it’s unlikely they will produce one. Currently, Toyota offers the GR86, and unless they discontinue it, we might not see the MR2 or Celica in North America.
3:28 I have a 2024 NX250 on loan this weekend the Prius shifter is the worst thing I've ever experienced. Last night I thought I had it in drive and it was in reverse and I floored it backwards. Even in Manual mode with paddle shifters the transmission software locks you out of gears no matter the speed. Whatever transmission they use for either MR2 or Celica wouldn't even consider buying one with that shifter.
I have a turbocharged 91 MR2 with 300whp. I don't care about 400+ hp or 4-wheel drive. I want it to be light and simple. We have enough super cars out there. The whole point of the MR2 is that it's light and affordable. The Lotus Elise and the Alfa Romeo 4C were good replacements, but the went extinct, and we can't get the Alpine A110 here.
@@byhsu6140 yes, and has been out for a while. No “common” manufacturers (Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, etc) have been able to pull this off in USA besides the Premium brand Mercedes. Honestly all I want from Toyota is a TRD Camry with a manual transmission.... I mean why put a TRD badge on it and only make it in an automatic. Blows my mind.
I own an SW20, and I'd rather have a 4cyl base version and a V6 for higher trims. If I was buying a mid-engined sports car at that price point, I'd want more than a 4cyl. I would probably go look for a Lotus instead...
Lets talk about the awkward front end design of the forthcoming Honda Prelude. Its stealing design cues that its competitor the Celica is likely to have as well as the design shared by the Prius and other Toyota models... I like the look, but don't want my Honda ripping off the look of its direct competitor at Toyota.

For goodness sake we need more cheap sport cars not upmarket ones which means more $$$. what 2.7 are you talking about? did you meant the 2.4?
I completely agree with you, however, the issue being, mainly for Americans, is the EPA. With these little engines come high standards for MPGs. This system is flawed af.
@angelabov3n All while SUV and Trucks still enjoys leniency despite being more gas guzzler by default.
@@abcwarrior91 300hp for 40k is asking a lot? they could keep the prices on these cars down without turning them into luxury cars
@@tinhinnh They make 300hp people want 400hp they make 400 hp people want 500hp. It never ends. People are never satisfied if a car doesn't have 500 hp these days, anything under 500 hp is a slow, boring car that nobody wants. These people complaining are not the consumers they are just broke kids crying who never have any intention or money to buy these performance cars and support the car companies.
That MR2 looks GREAT! How will a 2 liter have 600hp without electric power?! That’s a lot of boost holy moly. I highly doubt that’s even possible.
By the time they are out, I will be probably too old for them. For now, I will keep chasing the W206 dream.
Fun Fact: The Crown Sport would be the best selling Crown in the U.S. if they were to bring it here.
Exactly. Makes you wonder what the Toyota executives are smoking to not bring it here
A prediction is not a fact
I agree with what you said about the looks on the MR2
If they make a Sienna EREV with 100+km of all EV range they can take my money. As long as they have something like the GM Volt fuel age and a sealed fuel tank systems. GM shot themselves in the foot when they pulled their Voltec system seeing how Toyota is banking on a similar system now and nobody is buying the Bolt anymore.
As you say, the regulations need to change, no way that such high persantage will be BEVs by 2030. Hopefully the regulators here in Europe will change that too
The from reminds of my favorite generation Toyota Supra Mark lll (A70) without the pop up headlights.
I can’t wait until the new SLR Mercedes album
Wonder how much the I4 is would be nice to swap into a first gen FRS/86
MR2 looks sick!
I love the MR2 look. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
I'd so buy an MR2 but I know they will not send many to the US and dealerships are gonna mark this up to the wazoo.
Yea im super interested, but thinking about dealing with the dealership markups and all their fee’s im prolly not even gonna bother. When i was interested in a gr corolla toyota wanted me to enter a raffle to win the chance to buy the car over msrp…. What a joke.
the f*ckin dealers gonna make into a $150,000 mr2
I owned a black 86 and a red 90 Toyota Celicas. Almost bought a 90 Supra.😢
Toyota please keep prices affordable.🙏
Gloss black no, matte black yes!
I hope the MR2 looks like that!
Kirk, are you doing a video on the Acura Type-R?? Raiti did one and it’s insane.
Now have to get people to charge up their hybrids. That's apparently a problem in Europe. Thanks for the video.
Wait.... I think that with the Supra dying off as a solo plate. It may go back to a trim level of the Celica!!! There is your real Supra for all you Toyota purist out there.
Very good conspiracy theory , but Toyota is not that cool.
@@fortheloveofnoise wishful thinking I know 😂
@@fortheloveofnoiseWell Mazda has a turbo straight six now. I'm sure someone would still find a reason to bitch, but at least it would be fully Japanese.
@@DragonKnightX12 and here is that guy.
I hate that the Mazda inline-six has the timing chain on the back side of the engine.
MR2 front end rendering wrong....my guess.
In 1991, SW20 MR2 base model sold for $19,000 ($43,000 in 2024)
The most expensive iteration of the 90s MR2 Turbo in 1995 was $28,000 ($57,000 in 2024)
70k is absurd!
Screw these new car prices!
Hey, I was hoping if you heard the rumors of the ND Miata being produced until 2030? Thanks for all the good car info.
I would like to have that 70 mile range hybrid in the upcoming mini Landcruiser!
ever get one of those feelings when you’re looking at something and you have that feeling in your head that something is slightly off but you can’t figure out what? That’s the way I felt when I was looking at these renders. I couldn’t figure out what it was That was just… off! I agree the MRI looks really sweet from the side profile, but something was off when it came to the front end. It finally occurred to me.
MR2 is a cayman and boxter rival. Gr86 is a mx5 rival. Upcoming Celica luxury focused sports car.
They’re probably going to use electrification similar to the new Mercedes 4cyl.
The rear tail lights on the updated rear are giving very strong Mustang Mach-E vibes
0 clue why the Mr2 is 4 wheel drive will we be able to turn it into 100% power to the rear wheels?
If it's got GR-Four you can tweak the power split like the GR Corolla has. I think it'll go as high as 70-80 to be the rear.
Sports cars in 2026 = Rich guys that’s it for the future, thank you I’ll keep my 86 for sure.
Starting Msrp $45k+
Miata nd
I have a turbocharged 91 MR2 with 300whp. I don't care about 400+ hp or 4-wheel drive. I want it to be light and simple. We have enough super cars out there. The whole point of the MR2 is that it's light and affordable. The Lotus Elise and the Alfa Romeo 4C were good replacements, but the went extinct, and we can't get the Alpine A110 here.
200hp/ll at the crank on pump gas with a warranty should be a reality these days. Probably been difficult with current emissions.
Mercedes AMG already has a 2 liter inline 4 with over 400hp.
@@byhsu6140 yes, and has been out for a while. No “common” manufacturers (Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, etc) have been able to pull this off in USA besides the Premium brand Mercedes. I think this type of power should be much more common and available but don’t know the realities the manufacturers face to homologate for sale in USA.
I have the 86 I love the look I love the handling but the nine lets you down. Probably will trade for type s integra or civic R
I like the crown sport also
I hope they make them affordable after all
I had a MKIV supra...I didn't buy the new one as it didn't have the same energy. Give me a GT4 Celica that looks great and has all the bells and whistles and we have a deal.
24 GLE 450e has 48 mile range but C&D tested over 50 in the highway.
I would love to have a new Celica but only with a naturally aspirated motor and a manual transmission, built in Japan!
Not until Supra is gone
So 2027 the earliest
And will will start mid 50s
I would rather have modest power and lower price. I always dream of a MR4 hybrid awd similar to a NSX. Like a baby NSX at a anffordable price.
Ima say this with full respect, fuck toyota rn. They have been shit show lately, from corporate to dealers, and they need to get their shit together. Im saying this as a toyota fan for a long time.
The yellow render reminds me of a 180/240SX.
Honestly all I want from Toyota is a TRD Camry with a manual transmission.... I mean why put a TRD badge on it and only make it in an automatic. Blows my mind.
Why the hell do guys in the UK say “Sa-Leek-Ah” when saying Celica? How did Toyota not standardize the English pronunciation?
That picture of you in the thumbnail is so ridiculous 😂
Probably the better range Toyota is claiming is because of the release of their SS batteries.
I own an SW20, and I'd rather have a 4cyl base version and a V6 for higher trims.
If I was buying a mid-engined sports car at that price point, I'd want more than a 4cyl. I would probably go look for a Lotus instead...
The Yellow version looks best on the Celica.
This is exactly what I need Kirk another expensive car I can't afford
Lets talk about the awkward front end design of the forthcoming Honda Prelude. Its stealing design cues that its competitor the Celica is likely to have as well as the design shared by the Prius and other Toyota models... I like the look, but don't want my Honda ripping off the look of its direct competitor at Toyota.
honda boring ugly slow yes thank you
I wish it was rear wheel drive that’d be my car
Is the new Lexus rc+lc will be based on the ceilca ?
I had a 91 mr2 I’d love to buy a new one but for 70k I’d rather get a vette.
I’m 6ft7. Wonder if I can fit in the mr2
Can’t believe no one’s reporting on the rumors of the WRX STI slated to release soon and having 400hp
Can we really trust California's automotive golden boy, Jonny Lieberman, regardless of how long he's been with Motor Trend, meaning he lives in EV-fornia?
