You pulled out the Ola gear in this one! Fantastic 😎🤘🏻
Go Ola, or go... home?
@@TaylorDanley could you please demo a Blackstar DIST-X pedal? Thx
I always appreciate videos on the Fortin-era Randall amps.
Regarding the Satan, which I have brief experience with, the voicing is tight and the gain never goes into excess territory, which is very useful for mixes and also external boost options. It’s also not insufficient by any stretch, either; just remains dry and tight. The general formula for dialling it is to have the gain itself at maximum, the channel volume fairly high, followed by adjusting the low and high frequency parts to preference and using the clean onboard boost as needed. It’s a somewhat similar deal with the Thrasher and the Diavlo, with some notable differences that keep them distinct from one another. I have the 100 watt version of the Diavlo and like the Satan, with these amps, the channel volume is meant to be pushed further up in order to get more low end and thickness while the gain itself just keeps tightening up even when dialled to the maximum. The dry clank is just central to the voicing of these amps and something I personally prefer. They’re just meant, by design, to be dialled in a manner that’s quite atypical to the convention of classic high gain amps, but what’s on offer is quite unique and a gain structure that’s an ideal combination of tight and dry.
From the demonstration here and broader review feedback, the Solar Chug pedal seems like a good tribute to the Satan’s voicing formula, but it also presents an identity of its own. What can really be appreciated here is that it can be used as a preamp, as well as a potential boost, with more EQ shaping options and a built-in noise gate. Makes for a formidable device on its own or as tone augmenting gear with a large amp.
Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I agree, it's like an homage while also presenting its own unique-ness. A great option for people who love the Satan sound for sure.
@@TaylorDanley Well said and thanks for the thorough review. The fact that there’s often some killer Blackened Death Metal mix demonstrations along with more detailed content on the dialling-in process, is an immense service to the viewers. \m/
By the way, I somewhat envy the fact that you have the Satan, but given this demonstration along with the previous one, I think it’s definitely under worthy ownership. It’s just a real shame that all these amps are either very difficult to find these days, or exorbitantly overpriced on the new and used markets.
I recently got one of these pedals and it is fucken dope as hell! I live in an apartment so can't really use a massive amp, I have an Orange crush 35RT and this pedal is so god damn good for playing high gain and as mentioned in the video the noise gate is really good. Best pedal for playing metal I've owned so far.
Is that the smaller amp with the 10" speaker??....if it is, I had one and I was sort of happy with it.
My buddy passed away a few years ago, and had a half stack, and another buddy of mine has held on to it but doesn't play.
I've been sober for a few years now, and because of that, being sober from drugs, the buddy that held on to the amp ( and Ibanez guitar) thought it should be passed on to me on one condition. That I don't ever get rid of it.
Our friend who passed would be happy to know I've been jamming the shit out of it. 4x12 Marshall cab, with V-30s. Kustom Quad solid state amp, that I have the MT-2 Waza Craft reissue running through the clean channel front end. It works good this way ( I know Ola has videos running through the FX loop).
It shreds!!!!!.....sorry for the long ass story.
The whole point of the Crush amp is to use that nasty ass chainsaw distortion. So putting the Chug on it seems weird to me.
@@ericwilliams538 pretty sure that's the same amp man i love it, the dirty channel is fucken dope too even without any pedals. I'd love a big cab but would only piss everyone in my apt building off reeeal fast. Much love to your fallen homie.
@@DeadRingerMachine yeah that orange distortion is the exact reason i got the amp, I don't have the money to get a new amp just for the pedal though so one thing at a time. Got the pedal mostly out of interest so yeah now i need a new amp for the pedal - the financial rollercoaster continues..
If you don't own any pedals this is probably a solid first pick. It'd be hard to pick between this, the Loomis signature that just came out, or maybe even Glenn's as well. That'd be a fantastic 3 way shootout video too!
KSR Ceres?
I would recommend the Friedman BE-OD.
Empress Heavy for the win 🤘
Can we see a a Revv G4 pedal with a tube screamer into the effects return of a cheap Marshall MG 50 solid state amp for a future rip it or skip it video? That would be interesting to see.
VERY specific lol. Possibly. I think rip it or skip it will most likely be a series for new gear that comes out, but possible I'll check out some other things like that if there's interest.
Rippin'! Also, I have the Soldano Mini and run a Maxon OD808 in front of it. Emg81s in a neck through. Sound is plenty brutal for home writing / recording. Keep up the good reviews!
Thanks dude 💪
Ahh a proper demo of this pedal! I think this is the best metal-focused distortion pedal I've heard in a long time, Ola and his team fucking killed it. I wish I had a concrete reason to purchase it, but I don't. 😞
I think MOST gear purchases are irrational, but good on you for making logical choices 💪
Hey Taylor this is probably the only demo I missed thus far on this Chug pedal of the good tubers I steer towards! U rock bro 💪 🎶😈🤘🍻🎄
Thanks dude 🙏
2:45
Omg thank you so much for saying this!
I mean, it’s true 🤷♂️
@@TaylorDanley I agree 👍🏻
I'm liking that title of the video. Hopefully it's going to be a new series.
Thanks! Yeah I think I’m gonna stick with this one for a while!
Love your playing style! Well done sir. Sounds killer!
Thank you! 💪
I have recently bought chug pedal - sounds killer for me :) your sound with it is also great :) gonna check it with my band this sunday :D
💪
Yep liking my Chug pedal alot and my fave is through the loop of my Thrasher 120 so far. I gotta try boosting it since that is exactly what I do with the Randall. Thanks Taylor you did in this video exactly what I was thinking to do with the pedal. Big fan of your videos \m/
Thanks dude! And yea, I just did what it seemed like people wanted to see, so on that end I really appreciate everyone's input. It's super helpful.
Man trying to decide on a pedal to get lately is hard, so many awesome ones popping up
so many good demos on this pedal, and i'm dying to get my hands on one even if it is collector's item only due to all that i use currently.
Hey Brandon! Yeah dude they are very cool for what they are. Might not be everyone’s flavor, but for metal heads I think it’s a win
I already knew... RIP IT! Everything Ola does it top notch and the pedal is gorgeous and sounds amazing. Just like Solar guitars.
RIP IT! I figured this would be a rip it before I plugged it in also. I was actually surprised that a lot of people didn't like it on launch. I thought it was great!
Taylor, a tip for you is to run all your guitars in the passive input instead! I had a Randall Thrasher and thought the gain was super low even when i had the gain maxed out. Passive input solved this problem :)
Now use this pedal through a shit solid state amp and cab while playing an entry level Ibanez with stock pickups. If that pedal can make a Squier starter pack sound awesome I would sold.
Nice riffs sir! 💯
Thanks dude 💪
It's almost like the EQ in the pedal + cab/speaker/mic are the important parts.
I think it's all important, but those definitely play big roles. It's like the sum of a bunch of smaller components make up the tone.
The chug sounds absolutely brutal and it's pretty great, but I think the Gehenna beats it in terms of flavour and uniqueness.
It sounds so different in a very good way.
Totally valid. That noise gate does do a LOT for me though lol. It's a hard call between the two!
@@TaylorDanley Definitely some of the best value for money preamp pedals on the market rn. The only thing on par is the KSR Ceres/Vesta but that's double the price!
Well… how about adding a noise gate on the next revision or a Gehenna deluxe? 😁
@@danielringl8501 You told me in DMs a few stuff about the deluxe and oh my does it sounds extra spicy.
But I think the current circuit is just perfect! It's so unique!
Tbh I didn't want to watch the first chug pedal demos from Ola and started with this one and dude it sounds awesome! But what else suprised me is that SE X1A mic you're using. Sounds pretty solid and is even cheaper than a SM57. I think I have found a new pedal + mic to check out. keep it up, bro!
I already know this pedal rips, I just came for the beastly riffs. 🤘🏽
💪
That's a Rip It in my book. Great review Taylor.
Thanks dude!
Dude your pretty great at guitar!!.
I like it. I have been looking for a pedal to make my GK guitar amp sound better. I think this will do it. Badass song btw! I'm new to your channel. You're a good guitarist bro!
you did very good comparison, chug, soldano and randall. thanx
Glad you liked it!
I need Somone happy and joyful to jam with like this fella actully is nice to hear happy people
First demo that I have seen the Chug pedal take a pedal like a champ. Kyle Bull and Stay Metal Ray I believe both tried and didn't work for them. The one difference was I think you lowered the level knob to a workable one. The pedal to me wasn't as clear as the SLO mini, and no it wasn't just the low end, the mids and highs also smeared around a bit to make everything kinda cloudy sounding. Not going to say muddy, that implies too much low end freqs, cloudy kinda sums it up. Bright but not clear.
I have to go back and watch those to see what they boosted with, but honestly, I think it's why the TS9 is sort of the GOAT boost. It really works in almost any situation. Like if I tried to put a fortin grind in front of this, it would have been a mess!
@@TaylorDanley I think they added it in the typical way. L10 T7-8 D0. So I think its level related more than anything.
Taylor have you tried a dirty tree into the chug yet?
I'm sold! Sounds brutal
Cool review Taylor 🤘🔥🤘 I recently got the Headrush mx5 and honestly didn’t like it going into my Seymour Duncan power stage into a 2x12 cab. Sounded nothing like what I heard in the RUclips reviews. I guess I’m just and old fart who can’t figure out these modellers… must’ve been a lot of post processing 🤷♂️ I’ll stick to the Revv G3 and Chug pedal 🤘🔥🤘
Of all the modelers I've ever tried, I had a hard time dialing that one in as well. It was good, I could just never get it how I wanted it to sound. I always assumed there was some secret setting I couldn't find lol
@@TaylorDanley yeah the secret sauce button was missing 😂 thanks for taking the time to reply 🤘🔥🤘 The Mesa Badlander 25 is next on my list !!!
Chug pedal is ok ,but I prefer the empress heavy pedal...check it out...
Killer intro !! Man I really dig that green cable any info on where you got that from?
It's from a company called Happy Cable Co. I contacted him through IG
@@TaylorDanley I know its a bit off topic but I dig it. Thanks man
@@21stcenturymetal31 all good!
The "Gehenna" rips it for me 👹
Oh man, it's SO good haha
❤️
i thought the un boosted chug sounded better! im very tempted to get one and use it on bass...
Unboosted definitely sounded better
And it would probably work really well for bass cause u can control gain on low end
Had the Chug Pedal for a week and already sold it. It is not really high gain, it doesn’t take overdrives very well and the EQ has weird center frequencies….
Sounds incredible!
Awesome video content aside, Solar shtuff is awesome sauce, that fucking intro was SICK! Ears are sti bleeding, ass is still puckered! \m/
They really thought of everything for a metal player with this pedal. Definitely ordering one. Drives me insane that it doesn't come with a power supply though. Idk who's genius idea that was lol
I love Ola. But I’m not spending 200$ for a pedal to do my amps job
You don't need a pedal when you have this head
This sounded exactly like Ola. That Randall Satan with the pedal and Mesa cab.
I absolutely love this pedal my ideal tone BUT! I'm not sure if it's user error but this pedal does not take well to my fishmans , same settings and IR on Guitar with Nazguls in Eb give me the best sounds I've ever had but plugging in a Strandberg in drop C with fishmans just made me want to return this.. but ill use it with my Nazgul for now.
Weird, no idea. I have fish mans in my 7 string, I'll have to try it out.
@@TaylorDanley if you could and remember would you get back to me? Your EMG sounds fine. I even unplugged my fishmans asap and got a new battery still sounds like ass. but I just got a 7-string last night with Lundgren's sounds AMAZING!! Nazgul and Lungren's are a go with this pedal. Ola's Discord is no help just trolling on this question.
This pedal seems very cool! Great tone! Very heavy and evil!
Nice video Taylor
Glad you like it!
I feel like the chug pedal has that randall tone to it 🤘
I want to hear that engl powerball!
YOU WILL!
Hey great review! Im in a hunt for a high gain metal pedal, I'm kinda a total beginner when it comes to gear, but i enjoy playing stuff like gojira, meshuggah, etc. Down tuned high gain and meaty! would you recommend me to invest in this pedal or are there bettwe options out there?
Thanks!
I thought it sounded better before the tube screamer was added
Hey Big Tay, long time follower and fan here my dude wondering what kinda studio monitors/ headphones you use/ recommend for a low budget.
also that sludgy riff around 4:16 was pretty fire
Define "low" =) I recommend the Audio Technica M50x headphones (around 90 bucks) if you're into isolation, beyer dynamic DT770 for less isolation.
@@ThrashingBasskill ur not big tay :/
whats the diff between the dt770 and dt880 is the terms of a simpleton
Honestly I don't use headphones often, and when I do I usually buy the cheapest AKG or Sennheiser ones I can find just because I'm liable to drop and break them.
Studio monitors, I'd just go with what's in your budget and has decent reviews. KRK, Mackie, even Persons all have pretty decent budget options.
7.40. This is death metal tone.
💪
Nice demo... but I ain't convinced that this thing is more worthy than the distorted tone on a great metal amp in combination with a regular overdrive to tighten things up. I've been down the distortion pedal route dozens of times... it NEVER sounds better than your Amp head's distortion + overdrive. That Randall Satan + a boost / overdrive is WAY better than that Chug p.o.s.
Hey Taylor! Thank you for your video, do you recommend me to boost my chug pedal with a maxon overdrive in a solid state amplifier to get more saturated tone? Cheers! 🤘🏼
EHX Nano Metal Muff or Chug Pedal?
What's Ur bands called dude I liked that
Sacrificer
Dumb question will you add this to a kemper as pre?
isnt better since u added the grn pedal?
dude I own a the solar in my profile pic....I put the exact EMG pickups in it like you have and I had an insane time trying to fit them....did you have the same issue? the cavity needed to be shaved it was a nightmare.
Funny, they actually fit so tight that I didn't need mounting screws to hold them in place. I don't know if I ever put them in or not, I think the pickup may just be wedged in place lol.
@@TaylorDanley I didn’t in the neck either
A pedal to boost a pedal! hehe
Sometimes you gotta..
If you need a pedal in front of the pedal is not the good one for you .... The chug sound great as is .
Hey Taylor, did you modify your solar v to have the output jack on the other side as it normally would be?
Yes, as it should be lol.
@@TaylorDanley Ahh sweet, did you route the wires through the trem cavity on the back?
@@johnkirk6980 tbh I’m not really sure, Royce at Deviant Guitars did it for me. I wouldn’t trust myself to do that lol
I don't like the sound too much. (I had it myself.) It has this overly "grainy" kinda cliche SM57+V30 sound. The riffs are killer, though.
Thanks dude. Yeah, not everyones flavor,.. but neither is the Satan for that matter
Rip it! Skip or it!! Lol
Great riftsman great review too I've been waiting for it you always review honestly do you think it's better than the oh my goat pedal what do you think it's about the same or is the chug pedal a little better I have a oh my goat pedal I love it it's probably the 1st pedal I have I don't really mess with pedals a whole lot but In my opinion I think that oh my goat sounds much better but I was wanting to know your thoughts or maybe you can put it up against it in the video one day keep up the good content you're awesome great guitar plan your band is fucking bad-ass
I've never riffed that pedal before, so I couldn't tell you honestly. I think a lot of these preamp style pedals are probably in the same ballpark, but with he noise gate, it really does make it better IMO
I realy wish it had clean channel too
So it needs a tube screamer as well? Guess I'm skipping this.
Idk think it does I think it sounded better before he put the tube screamer on it
🤘
it chugs ola-ver the place
What’s the BPM of the short song at the beginning of the video?
I don't understand distortion pedals. Like if you're into metal, surely you want a high gain amp rather than a pedal? Dunno, but for another few hundred bucks you can get a decent 20w tube mini head...
From my perspective, I look at it as an additional tonal option without having to buy another entire amp. I only have one amp head, which I love, but having a pedal like the Chug would give me a chance to change try some completely new tones, and then still run it all through the same power amp section and cab.
Tight like a Tiger.
Rips for sure, impressive amount of range with the eq. And as always, Hanks!
I think I liked it more through the Soldano than the Satan.
Yeah the Satan was sort of doing this weird compression thing I noticed. Which is odd given it has kt88's in it.
The Soldano changed the tone into the Crate territory, the death metal tone Taylor chased in a few recent videos.
How is it compare with Gehanna?
The noise gate is a plus for the chug. I feel like the Gehenna is more versatile though, and having a second channel is cool if you need it.
With head phone the intro riff sound different in the left ear
Because I was playing it in real time, I didn't have the luxury of EQ matching them after I shot the video. Did my best!
@@TaylorDanley i think it sounds great honestly. i wasn't complaining 🙂
