  • It's Adam Koralik here and today we're checking out the RetroTink 2X Pro M, or Multiformat, by Mike Chi. It takes RGB based component signals and converts them to HDMI. It also supports composite and S-Video as well. However, the primary point is to allow 480p, 576p, and 720p support as well!

There are three scart types that should be addressed in the description so that some players aren't disappointed.
    1. A scart adaptor - this is not scart - It is simply AV cables in an RCA to scart connection adaptor.
    2. A regular scart lead. This is the same as above but with an actual (7 pin) scart connection. Quality wise, it's still just an AV cable.
    3. RGB Scart - this is the true high quality scart. Usually 21 pin.

This had me confused for awhile, so using this review I was able to figure it out, but I still had to listen closely to really get what I was trying to understand. This isn't what you need if you have 6th gen consoles. The RetroTink Pro will work great with 6th gen consoles, if my understanding is correct. The ONLY difference is that the M supports 480"p" instead of just 480i, which all 6th gen consoles do, and thus should work fine on the Pro. -- Just seemed like talk about this device is overly focused on which console, instead of which signal. Luckily this went in depth enough I was able to figure it out.

I am going to gift this retrotink 2x M to a friend that has all Nintendo consoles from NES to the Wii and can't connect anything to his new hdmi only TV.
It might not be the best for the composite of the older consoles but it works and the Wii can connect with 480P making everything work with one upscaler witch is great !!!

Thanks for confirming I made the right purchase. I have a 25" Sony Trinitron and good quality RGB scarts for all my console's, the megadrive, N64, Saturn and PS1 all look great on it and I guess were made for CRTs. Even next gen looks fine. But I'd love to see my ps2, xbox, Dreamcast and Gamecube in 480p + and whilst on my sofa vs desk chair. Gotta soft mod my xbox though. I may someday get a Tink2x pro for older console's but don't know if I could go 2 x 6 ways scarts > 1 x 4 way scart > scart to component box > retrotink2x pro > flatscreen.
Also, I'm that xbox 360 guy haha! It still works, and has it's original component cable. Don't know if the Tink would make much difference though.

A scenario, at least for me, where having the PS3 through component would be handy is trying to use it using modern capture devices like an Elgato hd60 s... without having to buy multiple splitter/hdcp stripper boxes to figure out which ones actually work with the damn thing. A VERY SPECIFIC scenario, but knowing something would work out of the box when I wanna record/stream some PS3 game would be a nice bonus. Unless someone can actually recommend one and save me the trouble. Lol

I use an N64 with the Tim Worthington RGB mod, RGB cable from RetreGamingCablesUK (the best RGB cables), a Framemeister and finally a Mclassic HDMI and the result is similar to that of an N64 with the HDMI mod so the best option for N64 according to my humble opinion is ... ... A CRT TV. With other consoles the framemeister is the best but in the case of the N64 not even the HDMI mod can match an old CRT.

So I run all my Wii U and older consoles (Down to PS2 but not Gamecube as mine lacks the digital port) through component, for the simple reason of I've had very bad experiences with HDMI switchers and I got good deals on component gear from both the internet and from goodwills. This was all fine and dandy on my 2012 TV that had native component inputs and only did up to 1080p anyway, so running everything at 720p through these leads made things easy, plus I didn't have to worry about bypassing the PS3's HDCP. So alls good right? It was until that TV died on me about two months ago, I was paniced and searching every online review for new tvs that still had component inputs and found that, those ports are becoming more and more of a niche feature by the year. I did mange to find one, but the whole experience left me thinking about the future for a lot of these systems that I don't really want to risk damaging the cases to install HDMI mods when these outputs work just fine, so something like this in a way helps future proof my specific set up in a way that the RetroTink 2x Mini does for my older retro systems but for the newer ones. I should also mention my capture card does infact natively capture component video so no messy conversions needed there!

I bought this for SUCH a specific reason and it was the only real "lagless" option for what I wanted to do. Play Melee on a crt pc monitor using component to hdmi to vga and not have any latency in Smash Bros Melee. I hate interlaced signal. So I had to find a way to do this. There were other lagless converters in the past that could do this but they're not in production as far as I've found. So. I am the guy who wanted to do this for the weirdest "retro" scenario.

I tested an mClassic in “RETRO Mode” with a BC PS3 with “PS/PS2 Scaling” set to “Off” and “Smoothing” set to “On”, and the mClassic does such a better job than the PS3’s internal scaler.
It shouldn’t be surprising given that the internal scaler is at least a decade older, and I’ve yet to test it in games with a “Widescreen” setting, but it really breathes new life into these older titles.
May try this out with my original Xbox if the quality plug-and-play HDMI solutions still have supply issues by the time I’m ready to buy.

I ordered mine specifically for the Wii. You mentioned that you can use the Wii U for Wii games but there's actually an issue with the Wii mode on Wii U where the Wii U looks *worse* than the Wii with component cables due to how the Wii U upscales Wii games to 1080p, causing some colors to bleed. While you can actually set your Wii U to 480p which will fix the color bleeding, this will for some reason zoom the image in a bit in Wii mode, causing the image to look a bit softer. Also the Wii U only outputs limited RGB through HDMI, so you won't get the full color range with Wii games.

Why not just release a Pro version of the SCART model that supports all these formats plus all the features as the Pro M? The lack of a passthrough option and lack of support for non-RGB sources is a glaring omission on the SCART model.

I know that the Retrotink pro-m isn't ideal for older consoles- but given the goal of the project (Turn on a console, and play, minimal fiddling, to make it easy for nieces/nephews to play retro games), do you think it would work?
