- It's Adam Koralik here and today we're discussing the Super SD System 3 by TerraOnion. This is a multipurpose device for the PC Engine/Turbografx 16. It acts as a flash cartridge for the NEC PC/TG-16 that can allow for all games to be played off the device. It also supposed the CD-ROM units. On top of that, it even offers RGB and composite output for those looking for a better way to connect the consoles. This is kind of the all in one package for any fan of the system.

The reason TO does not specifically support the TG16 or mention it is due to the slight fit difference. The SSDS3 was designed with the Japanese consoles in mind and the mold 100% works with them. However, the TG16 is a bit of a tougher fit and people can and have bent pins/pushed pins on their TG16 trying to put the SSDS3 on. The unofficial fix is to simply loosen the screws on the SSDS3 to make it easier to put on. Again, that's not TO supported...so do at your own risk. Mostly, just don't be a monster when trying to slide it on and it will be OK.
Interestingly, I have also tested the SSDS3 with the PAL TG as I own one and it works just fine with it. But, as you'd imagine, it's 50hz. So all the games will slower and the music will be slower. But that's expected as the PAL TG was meant to be used with NA games IIRC. Again, the PAL TG is not supported by TO so use at your own risk.
I have my SSDS3 hooked up to my SuperGrafx and it works perfectly with all the SGX games. This includes the recent release by Nicole Express called Space Ava 201 which has not just SuperGrafx support but also CD support as optional features for the game. The SSDS3 runs it perfectly.
Thanks for that!
SSDS3 is the device people need to own these days. Wish PCE was s video native thoe
5:45 Meanwhile in a high security lab in the outskirts of Iowa, Andorra: Mike Chi and TerraOnion design the RetroTink Multi SD Pro flashcart & RGB-to-HDMI combo that works with the Apple Pippin, Casio Loopy, and Nuon master races
Seems easy to use and has a boat load of features. Very good for PCE/TG16 users.
Great Vid, thanks Adam. for $300 dollars though I will just get a Series S and emulate them, lol
Well, whatever works for you son.
I’ve got the Mister on my Christmas list.
My DC has a MODE. My Saturn needs one.
Hi Adam. Interesting what you were saying about the turbo turbografx regarding versions. I'm in the UK and for me the only version I've ever come across is the pal version (the grafx without the 16). Accept once at London gaming market where I saw the pc engine? I honestly thought it was more common?
The PAL version? It's rather uncommon from my understanding.
@@AdamKoralik it came with a separate box which came with the power supply and scart lead. It plays ntsc games but in 50htz. I got the krikzz ever drive and works perfectly fine with it aswell. Quite lucky as tg16 are not the most common here. There was a brief period where they were all over ebay and quite cheap. I believe I paid £100 for mine in 2016 new in box.
I need those HD Retrovision Genesis cables for my Genesis & PCE SuperGraphx.
FYI: One well know flaw this thing has is a hissing/buzzing noise if the volume is raised above low-medium level.
Recommendation: Get an MiSTer instead. For $400, sill do the same but will also allow you to play all 8 & 16 bit systems.
´didnt you have a megaman game for the turbografx?
The CD? Yeah, I do. I just didn't include it because it's fan made. Guess I should have thought more about that.
@@AdamKoralik ok, so i wasn't just imagining things (i actually do that sometimes), thanks
Is your Turbo hanging off the table? Man, your setups make me go weird.
Have to make it fit in the frame.
Hey Adam, do you have a Turbo Express?
@@joshuawick5382 Unfortunately no.
Hey Adam, one thing to mention is that the PAL Turbografx is capable of supporting composite stock without any extra hardware.
I assume you don't have an American Turbografx CD then right?
I hope sega bates everyone and says they are making a new console and then it is reveled to be the pico 2
I like turtles
Me too!😁
Cool bro!
i like turtles
Every TerraOnion Product is nice, but too expensive as a retro accessory for me.
The SSDS3 is an amazing piece of kit. I was lucky to be gifted one and it really is the best way to enjoy the entire on real hardware. I ended up getting a smoked shell from Retro Game Restore on twitter to match with the SSDS3 as close as possible and it looks great! There's so many awesome games you can check out now with the SSDS3. Let me know if you want a digital copy of FX Unit Yuki for PCE 😁
Cool video man 😎
It "looks best" with a Transparent Smoke Retro Game Restore PC Engine replacement shell (fits original white PC Engine, CoreGrafx, and CoreGrafx II). ;)
Have this one waiting for me under the Christmas tree. Can’t wait to tear into it!
4:03 Plot Twist: Adam has the rare Nuon variant that runs SuperGrafx exclusives
Here's a bright idea. Why don't we make Sonic Mega Collection Ultimate to include the Sonic games that weren't in Collection Plus. The rest of the Game Gear/Master System games, Sonic CD, Knuckles Chaotix, Even the Sega Saturn games. The Xbox can run and fit it all with their 448kbps DOLBY FREAKING DIGITAL! In fact why not make the effort to make Sega Sonic the Hedgehog possible to emulate, gotta include some of those arcade titles like Sonic the Fighters (already on Xbox 360/PS3). Mega Collection Plus is only 2.6+GB of the 4.38GB available on DVD. Imagine everything up to the DS and OG Xbox with just 46.6GB blurays with 640kbps Dolby Digital.
The switch on the Turbo Everdrive is only for what kind of console your are plugging it into I believe. You can play the whole Japanese/US Library on it.
"Designed in Iowa"
Now that's a selling point.
LOL I was waiting for that.....Designed with Love....Lots of Love in Iowa. ;)
I have the European Turbografx, brand new but without the box and controller. Also, compared to the American version the picture is better. My American version has shimmering.
I believe this was only available by mail order in the UK 🇬🇧 from magazines like Computer and Video Games. I think it was more popular in France however I don’t know if you could buy one from a high street shop. Not getting an official release of the PC Engine in the UK 🇬🇧 is one of the banes of my childhood. That and the Neo Geo AES (although I could have never afforded it!)
@@martinevans1206 Honestly, I like the look more if the PAL version. The grayish blue is very unique, it screams out 90's, lol
@@martinevans1206 Yes, it was never available in the shops, a company called Telegames bought the stock off NEC when they aborted the PAL launch and sold them mail order.
Cool video tech talk lol yes ok yep oh ok
This is a nice unit, but I honestly prefer the Duo setup with a Turbo Everdrive for HuCard games and an Arcade Card Duo to handle the few worthwhile arcade titles that exist. The Arcade Card Duo is much cheaper than the Pro, I don't know why it is but my guess is that the Duo console was more common than the CD modules? Nothing wrong with the Terraonion unit at all, I just like collecting CD games plus the CD games can be burned fairly easily if the game is too expensive. PCE Works also has a great selection of pressed repro titles that normally either have a language block or are just too expensive in general. My Duo is also RGB modded and it looks amazing on the OSSC.
I was just looking yesterday into getting one of these! Emulators and fpga with their fancy hdmi just don't do it for my like an old CRT and that beautiful little PC-Engine.
I was confused as to wether or not this would cause problems for an RGB modded PC-engine, I couldn't find one that was working and unmodded for a good price. Thanks for clearing that up, now I won't have to buy a CD unit, an interface unit, an Arcade Card and a Super Card 3 before having the CD unit recapped, cleaned, possibly new gears and find a compatible CD walkman for laser replacement in case that fails, for more than this single device. AND it can back-up my Hu cards.
"I'm from Iowa!" -no one cares! (Red Vs. Blue 💙) lol oh and I guess they now have a pro hd version with HDMI out! Fpga NES core too. Now I've got to get this
I need the MEGA SD
Adam, don't forget to update to the recently released 1.03 bios. It's so much better, as the ugly interface has been streamlined and directory caching enabled. I have the entire redump set and no intro roms on my 256GB card, and it used to take forever to boot and change from roms to cds as it keeps on scanning all the games. This completely remedied the problem, as well as adding seek time emulation to fix the CD titles with audio desync issues.
Man, to not have to chuck out $300 bucks😓 Take advantage Adam... Hey, the SSDS3 is AWESOME...!😎
I mean if it helps anyone with all the turbo/pc engine consoles it doesn't work with, the reason why they did this is because doing rgb on a turbo/pc engine, yadadada is ridiculously easy to do. 30 bucks and some soldering. Boom, done, rgb. Since it does it natively.
Liked before watching because I know this will be awesome. LOVE PCE & the SSDS3 is absolutely amazing.
Lmao, the Gaul of them to be “anti piracy” while literally inventing a pirating device
amazing, that will help you to make restoration videos again
They're actually based in Andorra! 🇦🇩
That's why I showed that, son.
It's made in Chyyyy-nah~
Will this let you play actual Japanese pc engine games, or just the roms of those games.
ROMs, the console is still region locked.
@@AdamKoralik thanks, I have a TG-16 and I’m debating this and maybe getting a core grafx as well, or just a rgb modded duo
Rich (ReviewtechUSA) horse loves this.
Hey mate how you doing? Check out my very short video with this. I’m very confused what’s the issue. I’ve tried it on 2 consoles with the same results.
Looks like you're using the OSSC? Most likely that's where the problem is as that's responsible for the resolution change.
19:47 Fo rizzle my nizzle.
*Hold original SSDS3 with major RGB issues* Hmmm... didn't know they shipped out replacements for the original purchasers. Can you confirm that your statement is 100% accurate? Thank you!
Yeah, check their website.
@@AdamKoralik Awesome thank you!
I have one and it was a bitch to get it on my tg16... it would bend pins like crazy... especially the sound ones. Also it does not like region free modded tg16's. The graphics will be fucked up. Damn shame my tg16 has the jailbar fix in it along with being rgb modded as well. Over all its a good product and worth the $$$.
So I find that odd, you're the second person to say that. But I had no issues with either TG-16 of mine.
@@AdamKoralik It's worse when the switch is set to pc-engine mode. Maybe has something to do how it's wired. Who knows. The RGB is on par with SEGA's and looks fucking amazing on a Sony PVM.
11:20 "composite is disgusting" *Tell us how you really feel, Adam!*
🟡🔴⚪
No Dreamcast no that’s a big miss. Damn GD-rom I hope they find a way to make a dvd drive read the data on this discs
...wut
@@AdamKoralik Dreamcast make the dvd do so much gdrom. Hopefully making do not so much mess for data make. Understand?
Hey Adam what's more likely: SEGA coming out with a Dreamcast mini or SEGA coming out with a Saturn mini?
I wouldn't bet on either.
@@AdamKoralik Why? Are the Saturn & Dreamcast that difficult to emulate? I really don't know.
Saturn is too niche and too complicated to emulate, even now.
Dreamcast is more market viable, but to get it to run properly on a small device at a price point people would be happy with is not feasible.
Hell, that's why we haven't seen an N64 mini yet, and that's much easier.
Between the two, the Dreamcast is more likely...but you'd need to give it quite a few more years.
@@AdamKoralik that sucks.
🎄
I noticed we do the same thing with our directories instead of just the console name using a “NEC -“ before it.
The reason they don't list TG16 is because it doesn't quite fit with the original shell design. Loosening a couple screws helps.
People keep telling me this, but...I didn't have that problem with either of mine.
@@AdamKoralik Perhaps they revised it but word earlier on was that they were not going to. :(
I mean, you can see mine fit in the video, twice.
@@AdamKoralik Yeah, and I also saw it "fit" in GadgetUK164's video when they sent him a final shell for his prototype Super SD System³ but the plastic was stressed and he suggested loosening the screws. That's what I meant by "doesn't quite fit." It's a very small difference such that merely loosening the screws can alleviate. There was also some concern about it scraping the console, unless that was just for SuperGrafx (lots of people upset about scratching their SGX).
I think that was just an issue with the early version everybody has seen in the My Life In Gaming review of it.
Does it have save states
Not that I recall. That's rare with these things because they're not software emulation.
I like original hardware and games more but turbographics is like saturn expensive as hell to collect for. So this would be cool to have. But awesome video. I wanted to say I love your channel bc I don't think anyone's else channel that is like yours.
That's a good thing right?
That is a great thing. Your channel is amazing.
Actually, if you don't mind, I was more curious what you meant by "I don't think anyone else's channel is like yours." There's a lot of retro gaming channels. I'm curious what makes mine unique to you, if you don't mind.
@@AdamKoralik I don't mind at all. Just your attention to detail. How you respond to most of my comments. Like your livestream no one would be on for 7.5 hours it was so awesome. The products you cover. I have learned so much from you. You got me back into collecting last year. I only had a ps3, ps2 and a ps4. Now I have 19 systems and about 400 or so games. I never knew I could use my ps2 on our 4k tv. Everything you recommended is a great product. Plus I love your retrospective videos and your stories. Your passion for this hobbie and how I can relate to you. I was fighting with my mom and family and your words to talk to your mom bc you only get one really me get me through it. So sorry about your mom passing away earlier this year. Like some of your older videos. You responding to a few I commented on. You saved my snes, dreamcss Thought that was so cool. sorry if this was too long. Hope that answered your question.
@@richardfosterII7575 Most definitely, thank you. I thought you were going to say "you shoot videos like crap, and you don't care that it's out of date" or something. What you said is much better. :P
After all the pushups I did. And quarters I threw in the wishing well... still didn't get 1st!?!
If you want digital upscaling then it sounds like you want UperGrafx UGX-02 instead. That is the one that works as an ODE and Everdrive but also gives you perfect digital output with a DVI to HDMI cable. It handles 240p properly and is the only plug and play video upgrade with proper YUV colors. It also let's you dump games and run virtual system cards.
UGX-02 does not support Arcade Card titles without an Arcade Card but you can get away with the cheaper Arcade Card Duo since it will work with the virtual Super System Card. Of course, there are only a few games that ever used it.
UGX-02 does not support ROMs over 512k but only a few games are larger. Of those few, some are available on CD and work perfectly with the UGX-02's ODE functions (Bonk 3, Air Zonk, etc), so you aren't really missing out.
It doesn't scale with interpolation so you'll want to use an integer scale. The aspect ratio will be a little too wide but it's still a perfect scale.
