  • It's Adam Koralik here and today we're discussing the OSSC (Open Source Scan Converter). This device, similar to the Framemeister, allows you to adapt older game consoles for use on modern monitors. Today, let's review it and see how it holds up!
    Thanks to Corey for making this possible!

    There are three scart types that should be addressed in the description so that some players aren't disappointed.
    1. A scart adaptor - this is not scart - It is simply AV cables in an RCA to scart connection adaptor.
    2. A regular scart lead. This is the same as above but with an actual (7 pin) scart connection. Quality wise, it's still just an AV cable.
    3. RGB Scart - this is the true high quality scart. Usually 21 pin.
    This will work best with the following consoles:
    Atari Jaguar
    Atari Jaguar CD
    Nintendo Super Nintendo (Super Famicom) (original model only) (some users report issues with this console)
    Philips CD-I or CDI (450 model not supported)
    Sega Master System (model one)
    Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) (models one and two) (I personally couldn't get this to work)
    Sega CD (Mega CD) (I personally couldn't get this to work)
    Sega 32X (I personally couldn't get this to work)
    Sega Saturn
    Sony Playstation (1)
    SNK Neo Geo AES
    SNK Neo Geo CD
    This will not work with anything older such as the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, Nintendo Entertainment System, Colecovision, Famicom etcetera.
    Some notable exceptions that do not work because of the limits of the console itself:
    Nintendo 64 (unless RGB modded)
    Super Nintendo Jr (unless RGB modded)
    3DO (any model, Panasonic, Goldstar etcetera, though S-Video is supported)
    NEC Turbografx 16 (unless modded or uses external RGB adapter)
    PC Engine (unless modded or uses external RGB adapter)
    Sega Pico
    This device includes a VGA port for use with these consoles:
    Apple Pippin (included on board VGA)
    Sega Dreamcast (supports VGA, but SCART is supported as well for non compatible titles)
    Component Input is also available, and is intended for the following consoles:
    Nintendo GameCube
    Nintendo Wii (not including the Wii Mini)
    Microsoft XBox
    Sony Playstation 2
    The following consoles will not require this device in any way as they already have HDMI on board.
    Nintendo Switch
    Nintendo Wii U
    Microsoft XBox 360
    Microsoft XBox One (and Xbox One S and X)
    Sony Playstation 3
    Sony Playstation 4 (and PS4 Pro)

      @@ManOfAttitudeLP1998 I'm not really into the technical things, I'm a simple guy and I just want to play my old PS2 games in a somewhat decent quality, I was thinking about the Framemeister and I heard a lot of positive things about it but then I saw the price tag and I was like nope, so I came across this thing and it technically does the same right? I also don't play on a TV I play everything on my monitor which is HDMI, and if I compare everything to my TV my monitor does a better job at cleaning up those games, I always used those cheap PS2 to HDMI boxes but still it looked not that bad but I know it could be better, I also don't know of any European games have progressive scan I tried some games which are listed to gave progressive scan but it doesn't seem to work here.

    Hey Adam, I think the OSSC might be worth revisiting since you last made this video. The 1.6 board revision support HDMI as the default with audio. For RGB you simply plug the cable in and use the audio toggle in its default position. For component you need to purchase a 2$ RCA two channel audio to 3.5mm adapter, and plug it in one of the two audio input ports on the board and toggle the switch to AV2 input. For VGA you need to provide a 3.5mm audio input to the second 3.5mm port.
    The OSSC also added a special VGA mode to address the dreamcasts non standard VGA output. I don't own the console, but the more recent reviews I have seen online don't complain about the same visual noise you talked about in your review.
    There are also other settings to address the sync modes. The OSSC wiki has instructions on how to fix the issue you had with the sega genesis. I haven't tried it, but I suspect it would fix your issue.

    You know Adam, the best thing about the OSSC is that the box spits out the exact refresh rate of a console that is connected to it. So let's say we're playing SNES, a console that outputs an odd-ball refresh rate for the video signal, CRTs have no issue with it, but with certain HDTVs, the screen will glitch every 2 seconds because HDTVs aren't equipped to handle raw refresh rates of old consoles, like the SNES and original NES. But if you have an HD or 4K TV that can handle those raw video signals flawlessly with the OSSC, than you're gonna have a good time. You know why, because the OSSC spits out the same refreash rate of any console you hook it up to, there's no lag comming out of it, the only lag you get is from you're HDTV or 4kTV. The XRGB mini has 1 frame of lag on HDTVS and that Cheap SCART to HDMI box has 3-4 frames of lag on HDTVs

    I have this and it works great with all of my RGB consoles, component consoles, and Dreamcast. I have an LG TV which accepts everything that the OSSC has thrown at it.
    I was disappointed with how the Framemeister handled 480i and 480p over component after fiddling with the different settings and never really getting a very good result. I'm very happy to say that the component video of this is AMAZING.
    I also wish that audio ports were included, but my workaround is using a separate manual A/V switch which is plugged into my receiver. I have a SCART switch and a component switch feeding into the OSSC with the audio leads from each connected to the A/V switch. It's not pretty, but it works and required only one extra piece of equipment.

    Since that jack is outputting analog audio, you could wire whatever pins it's plugged into with more appropriate RCA jacks if you want. So you don't go through that mess of cables. It's fairly easy to do since both have left, right and ground pins just with a different connector

    If I remember correctly my SNES came with a RF-cable and only a decade later I bought an s-video cable to hook the console up to a projector - projectors never featured SCART ports. Most modern TVs now have a legacy port to which you can hook up one RGB SCART device via an extra dongle.

    This is a very interesting device. The ports used (or not used rather) is an Achilles Heel with it, hopefully future iterations will offer more flexibility. I would love HDMI but as you said it's a licensing issue... however RCA audio jacks have been around forever, do those really still require licensing? If not for such limitations and the way it handles upscaling for systems that have unusual resolutions like the Genesis you mentioned, this could easily supplant the Framemeister. I look forward to future developments but I will stick with my cheap scart to HDMI box for now as it does the job well already, with a couple of notable disadvantages.

    Nice video Adam. Only thing I'd add is the Xbox 360 had a first party VGA cable with the red and white rca plugs to connect. Only reason I know this is because back in 2006 or so I didn't have a good HDTV at the time. I did have a nicer CRT IBM monitor that was I think 22". It could actually output the xbox at 1920-1080 with smooth but letterboxed results. Probably not the best way to connect but it definitely did the job at the time.

    the way to look at it is, the OSSC provides pure RGB colour output, where as the Xrgb mini colour space is compressed, the Xrgb mini has much more fine tuning and scaling options, whereas OSSC is a line doubler or triple which leaves a lot less fine tuning. in my case i owned both and sold the XRGB Mini, due to two reasons the OSSC outputs much better RGB colour and in some instances the XRGB mini produces minor image noise on some colours/consoles.

    Seriously!!! If you have a Dreamcast and an HD TV, you GOT TO have this!!!! Forget about all other vga to hdmi rubbish devices. THIS IS THE ONE! OSSC makes it looks crystal clear like how I used to connect it to my old CRT PC Monitor.
    I got mine on ebay for £106. (They are selling around £110 but you can send an offer to try to ask a cheaper price). Yes, it is sent from the factory in China, but it works great!
    All the OSSC (1.6 and above) hardware now lets you have audio input from your dremcast when you connect it via vga.
    You just need to set your HD TV in 4:3 mode
    Then in the OSSC, go the menu by the remote control, to sampler opt to ensure that "480p in sampler" is set to "DTV 480p". Then if the Output Opt, in the 480p/576p proc, set it to
    Line2x which will Line double 960p/1152p output. (That give you the crystal clear image for me)
    If supported by your display, it is also recommended to set H.active to 640 in the advanced timing menu. You may also need to adjust H.backporch and/or your display to center the image.
    Then you can save this as a profile in the Setting opt.
    Here is the reference I read from one of the youtube comments I found then found out more.
    ======================================================================
    The correct setting for Dreamcast (which should result in a wider AR) is DTV 480p. The problem is most VGA inputs expect 640x480 since that's what all computers used. See the OSSC wiki for more info and optimal settings (junkerhq.net/xrgb/index.php?title=Dreamcast)

    Have you tried feeding the DVI to HDMI cable into the HDMI in on your Framemeister or even the SCART/HDMI to HDMI box? Some people tend to feed the OSSC's output into a separate scaler, like the DVDO line of scalers, to handle the off-spec resolutions. There is also an audio upgrade that you can buy to integrate the audio and video into one signal and as stated before, you can feed the audio from VGA and component devices through the SCART input.

    • @AdamKoralik
      @AdamKoralik  7 лет назад

      I could do that, but it kind of defeats the point of the OSSC if I'm using the Framemeister.

    • @WhiteJarrah
      @WhiteJarrah 7 лет назад

      Might be worthwhile experiment though. The cheap box is more obtainable than the Framemeister, if it works with the OSSC it could be the solution to the OSSC's compatibility and if the Framemeister can handle it would be the solution to the Framemeister's poor handling of YPbPr.

    Adam, do you still have your old SCART to HDMI? I recently acquired an OSSC 1.6, which has HDMI output. I haven't gone into any hardcore testing with it yet, but I found the best way to use it, at least in my setup, was to plug it into the HDMI input on your old SCART to HDMI. My Sony Bravia 32inch HDTV worked with every console I threw at the OSSC, except the PS1. And of the ones that did work, the TV wouldn't accept anything but the linedoubled 480p or 576p modes. Plugging it into the SCART to HDMI input, I was able to get everything but the 5x mode working. And I found that by setting the OSSC's output to 3x mode, the image is scaled at 4:3 aspect ratio.

    The OSSC is a much more convenient and useful device now. They've replaced the DVI-out with HDMI-out and have audio inputs for the VGA and component video inputs. You get audio directly from the HDMI-out as well without the impractical audio workaround he describes here. Additionally, there is also line doubling support for 480p content (such as from most Dreamcast, Gamecube, Wii and Xbox games) which I don't believe they had initially. It looks incredible. Since the device is open source, the software is always being improved and you can buy perfect clones of the original device for just a little over $100 USD. It took time for the OSSC to become really good but it certainly has gotten there. I would recommend one with zero hesitation for anyone except someone who only plays PS2. To get really good results from a PS2, you really need something with a frame buffer due to the fact that almost all its games are output in an interlaced mode (480i).

    Couple of things: for ps2 you can use sync on green with this: sync on green is an rgb 480 p signal that is less noisy that ps2 supports. Also this is a line doubler but can line triple if your tv supports it it doesn't framelock inputs to the input resolution so it's bad with capture devices and can cause jutter with some consoles but has better 4 4 4 color conversion than the framemeister

      Most of my systems prior also came with them, I may have been an anomaly. All systems are compatible with the adapter anyway, so I guess the creator of the device expected you to just use them anyway as most TVs post 2003 went no lower than scart for picture where I live.

    Unfourtunate to hear about the audio situation. I'm mainly interested in using this for consoles with component but no easy in for audio is a big bummer.
    Good news though is that the most recent firmware has pushed the hardware inside the OSSC in its current form to its limit, meaning we may see a new version sometime soon if its creator intends to add upscaling to 4k.

    Oh my goodness gracious... I'm sorry Adam, but pretty much every computer (lol new Macs don't) has a line level analog audio input. And if you REALLY need an RCA input and a 3.5mm output, you can plug it in through the SCART port with an composite/audio to SCART adapter which I personally have a TON of laying around (tho I do live in Europe but still they're dirt cheap).

    • @vresi
      @vresi 4 года назад

      I have had home computers since 1978 and probably 50-60 of all kinds since then and not one of them has had a line input. I have had a Dell desktop and a HP laptop with microphone in, but both were for condenser microphones and isn't a line input. This is why I some time ago bought a Behringer UCA222, a device that has a proper line input over USB.

      I have an RGB modded N64 and it's amazing through the OSSC. There's a guy out there trying to use the "de-blur" that some of the more expensive RGB mods with the OSSC to take away the unnecessary blurring the N64 natively has.

      OSSC is actually better than Akura since it's the only box that can correct the Dreamcast's weird output aspect ratio. I have no clue why Adam got poor results with his Dreamcast via the OSSC.

      No but I've been chatting to the designer, it's going to be just a simple VGA to HDMI transcoder, so made for convenience rather than ultimate quality. Expect good results, most people don't notice the aspect ratio thing anyway.

    You can add digitized audio to this for about $15 worth of components (a bit more if you don't have the soldering skills, I sure as hell don't). Gets rid of all of the audio issues you discussed.

  • @emmettturner9452
    @emmettturner9452 7 лет назад

    It is available with HDMI if you order the DIY kit. Are you sure it doesn't accept S-Video and Composite through the SCART connector? JP21 is not "proprietary," it's just an alternate pinout. You definitely didn't need all those adapters for audio: cables that connect headphone jacks to RCA stereo are ridiculously common. I've even found them at Wal-mart, but I prefer the small Y-cable type that lets you use your own instead of being restricted to the length they are made. Most TVs allow you to connect analog audio for a digital source particularly because of DVI.

    hook your conoles up to the OSSC and let it do it's thing and then send the output from the OSSC into the framemeister, the quality is pretty amazing
    the compatibility issues you spoke of are 100% down to your TV, some TV's simply won't like the weird out of spec resolutions that the OSSC can send out which will result in no picture or poor picture like you described for the dreamcast, when used in conjuction with the framemeister or other good scaler it corrects the ouput and fixes the problems
    the only thing the OSSC really needs is on board audio passthrough

    • @dazzgc
      @dazzgc 7 лет назад +2

      no because you get the inferior rgb colour space of the xrgb mini, which defeats the purpose of getting the pure rgb signal out of the OSSC, best option is just buy a decent sized lcd monitor most will do line x3 mode

Do you think the OSSC would benefit me in any way to make the game feed look nicer than it already is (assuming I use the gamecube with component cables rather than a wii with component cables, and yes I know they look nearly identical between consoles)

    Makes me wonder if the people who built this thing could switch to display port from DVI because Display Port is a royalty-free product compared to HDMI. Plus Display port has audio just like HDMI. Granted you need a Display port to HDMI adapter but it would be more user friendly without the needing for those extra cables for audio.

      Depends on whether or not you're satisfied with composite video; whether or not you want to mod the system to output something better; or whether or not you're OK with using HDMI compatible clone systems like the Retro Freak or Analogue NT. I've used the same cheap SCART to HDMI that Adam has used for years, it works well with my PAL NES toploader that's been AC modified and is absolutely the best budget friendly option. Though if you want something that correctly recognizes 240p, either the RetroTINK 2X or the Framemeister are probably your best bet, but they are more costly. If you want to RGB Mod your NES, either the cheap SCART to HDMI, the OSSC or the Framemeister is a good option. There's also the HighDef NES mod that installs a HDMI output in your console. If using original hardware is not a priority, I've used a Cyber Gadget Retro Freak with NES and it's a pretty good option.

    I just ordered the OSSC and am dying for it to arrive. I have a question you might be able to answer: I currently have an original Xbox rigged up to my PC monitor through DVI-D. The only problem is that any game that outputs at 480i (including the Xbox dashboard menu) will not display on my monitor. 480p and 720p games look excellent, however... The problem is that many, many original Xbox games only support 480i. My question is, with the OSSC, will I be able to take an interlace signal in through component and output it at a progressive resolution? If so, I will have a perfect solution to the Xbox problem.

  • @skatcat743
    @skatcat743 7 лет назад

    vga always comes with 3.5 mm so just take that to your dvi to hdmi adapter that has headphone and dvi connectors
    for composite again passive adapters to do that
    it would be difficult if the scart did not have that
    also it does not need to process the audio
    so really all you need is a headphone cable switcher and you would have no issues
    the framemeister is not perfect either
    all you need is a different dvi to hdmi cable the better ones have a 3.5 connector

    Hey Adam, I have an interesting idea. You've gone and shown all these ways about playing games at higher quality. Is a CRT video in the realm of possibilities, HERE ME OUT! A good Trinitron getting fed a high quality signal will make games look amazing and if you use a PVM/BVM it's an image that will really rival the OSSC and even the Framemeister. There really big and bulky so it's probably something out there since it doesn't fit you're setup but it might be cool to pick up a small 14" or 20" CRT or maybe go to someone who does and use you're SCART to Component transcoder, that's what I've happily been using for on my Samsung 14" CRT and continue to use until I ever upgrade to a PVM or get an OSSC. Thank you!
