Bless you Masked Man. Thank you for this video & for trying our Hoshino sensei’s masterpiece. One of my fav manga of all time. I have many fond memories of the series even though the story gets fucked up at times. But, yes, Maked man, Allen Walker is such a well written protag. Kind yet with a tinge of tragedy surrounding him that makes him such an admirable character. His development too feels so raw even iconic. Thank you for giving this series a try and advocating for others to read bc this is a much loved series in my heart. Oh! It’s also not in hiatus. It’s just releasing its chapter at a slower pace of 3 months. As long as we get an ending and the vision that Hoshino wants, I’ll gladly wait those 3 months.
Honestly dgrayman shares its #1 pedestal for me with Berserk and Vinland Saga, it’s just got that *spark* that so many other series don’t have. And it’s simply incredible basically through 100% of its runtime.
@@manoarun6837 I haven't had time, but it's on the list I know I will never get to read. I've heard it's good though. DGM, on the other hand,, is the only manga I keep up with.
It is weird that this series doesn't get a ton of love. A girl I dated said it was her favorite manga, so I watched the anime and I'll admit, I had to struggle through a bit of it, but once I got to a certain part, I was hooked. I read the manga from there on and it was phenomenal.
BROOOOOOOO... this series is so fucking good! The story is very interesting, the characters are really good, the story is really good. Somehow it plays on the fact it's a shounen, but it twist that around, and the plot twist are some of the best in shounen. There's so many interesting abilities, and the antagonist are something else. So much symbolism, and it really knows how to keep your attention. Somehow, it just doesn't get old and keeps trying something new. The recent chapters have just been incredible, whenever I go back to this series, I'm just shocked at how good it is. Just please please please, read this series if you haven't. And yes, it does have an anime, and it's just as good. Except for the 2016 anime, which is fucking horrible. It ruins everything, and doesn't give you the real experience. You have to read the manga after the first anime
There are a variety of factors as to why its a great series. One of its strengths is that even though the main crew of exorcists had pretty awful lives during their younger years they decided to use that as a means of pushing them towards doing good. The flipside is also true where you have the apostles (I think that's what they're called) under the Earl who have lived fortunately but become inherently evil. Its a great contrast and interesting to read/see play out.
I think that the best thing about D.Gray-man is that it is literally morally gray. It tells you "we have the 'good guys' here and the 'bad guys' there". Then it shows you major wrongdoings of the former and humanises the latter.
Backstories don’t only reveal the character or connect him to us, they are mainly there to undestand why he is how he is right now and they explain his motivations. It’s not there to surprise you lol
100% agree, 13 years later and no anime/manga has made me feel the same way edit: you should definitely finish Pandora Hearts. The ending of it is honestly something special
@@pj1016 The pandora hearts anime is not good, unfortunately, the anime doesn't follow the manga at all. The manga is a masterpiece though. For D. Grayman the anime is also good, it's just that people prefer the pacing of the manga.
The D-Gray Man anime was one of the reasons I got into anime and manga . Also for those curious the anime was pretty and also covered the light novels that were out at the time .
When I first watched D Gray Man like a decade ago, I thought it was a generic demon anime but something about kept me watching. Now a decade later, I'm painfully waiting for the whenever a chapter drops, this series really stepped out there in a way most shonen weren't doing back then
It definitely has a devoted fan base. I know I've been waiting 10 yrs to find out what happened to lavy. Also it's not on hiatus, it's been on a tri monthly release schedule for the past 10 years due to the authors condition
Allen's compassion is compelling for me because he's in a unique position in his world. He lives for both humans and demons. He wants to destroy demons not just to protect people but to free their souls because he's the only one who sees how much demon souls suffer with his cursed eye.
I remember watching D. Grayman and my little brother would just sit next to me and watch it with me. Now it's one of the animes that he fondly remembers and feels nostalgic about. Sigh....Good times.
That transition into sponsorship was CLEAN. Glad to see you covering this gem, it might not be my favorite shounen of all time, but it’s easily in my top 10. Rock on mask :)
I watched this when I was 8, it was aired on our local television and I was obsessed with it a lot. A lot of my peers were also into it back then so it's amazing how when we get together, whilst recalling our favorite shows, nobody forgets this masterpiece. And most of them are still updated to it (mind you, half of them aren't even manga or anime fans). It's that good. Some may argue it's nostalgia but to me I have alwaya been attached to the mystery and the mc, Allen Walker. Yes, he was my first anime crush but rereading and rewatching D.Gray Man allowed me to see better what made the show develop a very devoted fanbase. (Yes, my people. The fandom is pretty much alive and kicking to this day.) I'm still looking forward and hoping it will get a revival adaptation. It's Japanese fanbase is still there so it's not entirely impossible. I hope if it happens they get the old voices back. They managed to hire Allen's original VA for Hollow. I hope the newer generation could appreciate this gem. Oh yes, other than the MC being lovable, I love the friend dynamics of the main cast. Lavi, Lenalee, Kanda, Miranda and Krory! Their abilities are also very unique for me. Also, I want to see more from the Generals. And we still havent explored Lavi's hidden eye and the Bookman clan. There's still so much to unpack. I'm turning 20 this year and i'm still inlove with this series. I really hope it gets more attention soon 😭
That's "Kento Ankokuden Cestvs (part 1) Kendo Shitouden Cestvs (part 2)". Literally no one has talked about it on RUclips. It's been ongoing since 1997. Has artstyle rivaling Berserk. Great characters, fighting, drama, etc. For some reason, no one knows it exists.
@@lancelotc2100 I've thought about making video's like that. Just not very tech savy. Would have to figure out what programs to use, editing, equipment, etc. Analysing and writing would be the easy part. It's really all the technical stuff that's gonna be difficult to get started on.
I'm gonna be honest here..... The 5th episode...... I cry every time I'm rewatching it. I.. I don't know why but Lalas song.. I can't stop my tears man😢
I will give you a clue: All of that 1st quarter of the anime/manga was intro and exposition. Of Allen's true past. And also all those situations/arcs are foreshadowing of what awaits Allen and what he will go through and what he will make others go through. If you Go back, with this in mind and re read it, it will sock you. I got this from one of Hoshino 's Instalive where she had questions from fans and some one asked her about this and she simply said (paraphrasing) "you know I have left clues form the very beginning all over the place you need to pay attention and see if you catch them".
Oh yeah and Dgrayman ain’t on hiatus, it’s just quarterly. So it gets a chapter every three months. The new chapter comes out in 5 days I believe and it’s been going strong ever since.
I came across this first volume in my local bookstore, made a purchase, and haven't regret anything since. It is just damn well written and things being intertwined to each other just made me appreciate how it has been so consistent throughout the year
This was one of the few animes that aired in my country, which is still weird to me considering that popular animes like One Piece and Dragon Ball were never aired. It makes me so happy to see D Gray Man get the praise it deserves.
Masked Man/Asura, you've become my favorite RUclipsr for sure. My favorite Manga rarely gets any attention and the Anime usually gets slept on, the community is great but it feels a lot like a cult but it fits the aesthetic of D.Gray Man, and honestly thank you for making this video it put me in tears also I have to note that the Author Katsura Hoshino made a masterpiece cause she's a trump card, Joker, just like the character she made, Allen Walker, a Jack of traits and a master of most.

Definitely one of my favourite shounens great themes, fantastic gothic artstyle that has evolved beautifully with time and indeed Allen walker is a top tier protagonist. Just glad to hear anyone talk about it honestly. You mentioned it being on hiatus but that isn't really true, since July 2015 (coming back from an actual 2 and a half year hiatus) its been publishing in a quarterly magazine with it making chapter releases mostly consistly. I suppose it is only 4 chapters a year but at least its on a schedule which is more than you can say for berserk and hunter x hunter.
Yeah, I am just happy to be getting chapters at all. Especially since I do not believe the quality has gone done since the hiatuses. I love the author and I am glad they are still putting so much effort into the series!
D-gray man, is the best anime/manga that ever existed. To this day, never, ever, have I come across a story or protagonist like Allen Walker, and it won't seem like it much, but for me, D-Gray Man has the best villains I've seen in an anime, they are completely unique. It doesn't bother me at all that Kastura Hoshino takes three months to publish a chapter, because those three months gives her the opportunity not to damage the manga by rushing, she has enough time to plan well the ending and the development of the characters. . Each episode released is like a birthday present, not forgetting that D-GRAY MAN has some of the most beautiful art I've ever seen. D-Gray Man is hands down the best shonen manga I've come across, and I can't wait for its climax.
This has been my favorite shonen along with gto and ashita no joe, I’m glad to see you enjoy it so much. It’s so amazing and these quarterly releases are killing me
it is one of the first animes that I watched and it is still my number one. I watched it in 4th grade so I was around 10-11. I am 19 now and still support the series and wait for the updates. I can talk about it for hours. such an underrated anime. I didn't met any other protagonist like Allen. he is such a sunshine and sweetheart but he is not a fool and also has a kinda sinister side. I used to have a crush on him, well I still do but I am 19 now so that's weird I guess? :D edit: also yes Tanjiro is kinda similar to Allen but he is way more lightheaded than him. Yes, he lost his family but Allen never had a real family. the only men who he considered as family was a mentally ill men who named him after his dead dog and his master who was willing to sacrifice him for the 14th. Lenalee and others in the headquarters loved him but most of them doubted him/doubts him. and choose their "holy duty" over him.
This is one of those series that normally people would have just abandoned a long time ago. But it’s so good that I and obviously many others want more of. Wether it’s an anime or manga, the emotional investment in this world and it’s characters is impossible to ignore and even sever despite the hiatus.
I’m so glad that you’ve read D. Gray Man. I was going to recommend Pandora Hearts, but I just past the part where you said you drop it. When you have the time, I hope you can give it another go, since it has a REALLY slow and steep start, but once it reaches the peak it’s just a rollercoaster of a story.

@@amlandutta2933 It's great. There's some filler here and there but once you get to Hallow it's adapted so well you'll wish there were more material to continue the series. And the openings are legendary.

Please consider a video diving into D Gray Man more in depth with inherent spoilers. I just want to hear what you think of the current state and there’s not much content about D Gray!
I loved hearing you gush over this series and Allen! I do think it is an underrated gem! It took me awhile to get into the anime because of the jank release of the US releases, but once Hallow came out, I was in love with the series. Allen is genuinely a superb character. I started reading everything after the Hallow anime and it's been a treat. I do definitely want to read the manga from the start someday. The fanbase is still strong online, but at cons it seems to come and go unfortunately. I've cosplayed Allen a couple times and hope to bring him back to a con next year, but it's rare to see another DGM cosplayer anymore. Really hope to see a big resurgence someday. It's a shame Hallow was never physically released, but here's hoping to someday!
I read d.gray-man since I was 14 years old and bought my first manga(12 years ago), bought it because of the aesthetics since I had never heard of it and it became my long lasting obsession. Every month, for 12 years, I check for updates and get excited as soon as I see a new chapter was released. And at least once every two years I bring myself to reread everything from the beginning. I love FMA like every other anime fan from the 2000's, but the pure love I feel for D.gray-man doesn't make a fair comparison.
Missed? Boy I lived that era. I still enjoy the opening and ending songs. I wasn't big on manga at the time the anime was airing but got aeound to it about 7-8 years ago or so?

how is the anime ?Tell me its pros and cons bcz i am confused whether should i watch the anime or read the manga,I like the anime format more but if it is average then i will read the manga
@@amlandutta2933 Read the manga cuz the anime ends on a cliffhanger and its sequel is bad. Plus the manga releases every 3 months
Loving the Lenalee appreciation. She hasn’t appeared in the manga for half a decade now.
@@amlandutta2933 anime has some arcs that manga didn't had and vice versa. read the manga first but anime is also very good. I watch the anime as a beginner and it is still the longest series that I've yet to finish (113 episodes). it ends on a cliffhanger but those episodes are sooooo good. also musics are banger. openings, endings, 14th's Melody, Lala's lullaby... it is a must.
Was wondering if you'd get around to this one. D. Gray Man is by far the most underrrated manga I've read in the past twenty years.
Noooo
Check out "Kento Ankokuden Cestvs (part 1) Kendo Shitouden Cestvs (part 2)". If anything is underrated, it's this. Atleast D.Gray-Man has some people talking about it.
I am so glad masked is getting more and more sponsor, it's been a ride for me, seeing the channel grow from 4000 subs to where we are now. Love you masked and all my fellow masked fans.
Fax, I found out about his channel late last year and he's a chill dude and great manga RUclipsr 👍🏾.
The fanbase is super dedicated

Then it shows you major wrongdoings of the former and humanises the latter.
like ffxiv
D gray once was famous but due to hiatus it popularity fizzled out it I one of my favorite stories I have ever read
Backstories don’t only reveal the character or connect him to us, they are mainly there to undestand why he is how he is right now and they explain his motivations. It’s not there to surprise you lol
I started Reading this series back in high school and IT'S SO GOOD! It's a Shonen that I loved just as much bleach at the time and still to this day!
D. Gray-Man isn’t on hiatus, it is released quarterly (4 chapters a year). So take that Hiatus X Hiatus.
100% agree, 13 years later and no anime/manga has made me feel the same way

I love both of those series!
How is the anime?

The most underrated manga ever
That's "Kento Ankokuden Cestvs (part 1) Kendo Shitouden Cestvs (part 2)". Literally no one has talked about it on RUclips. It's been ongoing since 1997. Has artstyle rivaling Berserk. Great characters, fighting, drama, etc. For some reason, no one knows it exists.

The way you compared my favorite protagonist (Allen), into Guts, Musashi and Thorfinn was perfect becaused I loved them a lot too!
edit: also yes Tanjiro is kinda similar to Allen but he is way more lightheaded than him.
