As a console peasant, hard to believe it wasnt too long ago, we were lucky to get a couple new shmups a yr. Now, 2023 & beyond is looking absolutely fantastic for us shmup loving peasant folk : )
Sweet video SJ! It’s awesome to see more and more these indie titles get released, and in physical form no less. I need to play Gunvein #BOMBA 😆. I’ve listened to the soundtrack on my way home from work numerous times, it’s so dang good. All the games you showed here are great, there are some real bangers in this list, but I’m gonna be honest, the most anticipated game for me in 2023 is CYGNI. I cannot wait to see what Konami has done with its return to the shooting game genre.
I'm really looking forward to playing a lot more of it as well and feel lucky to have a chance with the early beta testing. I think it will definitely divide a lot of players as they are aiming for both casual (non-shmup) and shmup players alike. The inertia is going to be a sticking point, but if they do it right it can show others it's possible. Another game ExtraGalactica has it and it's super fun. No question the production value is off the charts. If they can maintain the same level of presentation across the entire game, it'll quite possibly be the most polished looking STG of all time. In the meantime, enjoy some Gunvein! Just added you for the giveaway my friend.
While I'm sure its (current) PS5 exclusivity is a sticking point for lots of people, Final 3 might be my most hyped thing on this pretty incredible list. For me, there are very few games, shmups or otherwise, more nostalgic than R-Type and it wasn't that long ago where I thought I'd never see another one. I hope you get the opportunity to cover it in depth here on the channel.
Since I did an in-depth for Final 2, I can imagine doing it for Final 3 as well... long as there is enough new content to justify it. I own a PS5 and will definitely pick it up and find out. I'm hoping it's really good and worth the upgrade too. My favorite thing about Final 2 thus far is how much DLC has been released. I knew they would make them but didn't imagine it would be so many.
@@ShmupJunkie The DLC output has been really staggering. As a backer, I was kind of floored with how big the game got. To the best of my recollection, we've covered everything they wanted to do for stretch goals, even the ones we didn't hit, and beyond. It has been a real treat to see (and play). Hopefully Final 3 packs in enough new stuff to make it worth the video.
Thanks! Yes, I always do my best to show off other gameplay. Not only does it help save me some time, but it lets people know where they can check out legit, well played and not cheated gameplay for these. I always hope it helps bring a little more exposure to talented players.
Great video! I love how your videos always make a good showing of those kinds of high-energy retro-style indie games that might not have hit the big time. Can't wait for a lot of the future releases here! #VENGEANCE #WITNESSME
A total banger of a video buddy!! Just finished watching now my Sunday roast has been consumed and it’s pretty much confirmed, 2023 is absolutely shaping up to be one of the best for both shmups and top tier quality retro games. Iron Meat looks amazing as well as Prison City which is totally up my street! Love that you’ve included Batsugun and the M2’s Zero Fire so quickly after being announced too!! Really looking forward to Terra flame as well as the console version of Schildmaid MX but pretty much every game in this video will be added to my collection. Thanks as always for the enthusiasm and love you always put in to these premium videos
Thanks dude! I only wish it didn't take me a month to put this stuff out and I could produce more of it. But I've settled in and am much happier doing more with less and making them as good as possible. Even so I had to rush this out and wanted to include even more games I couldn't. I did have to throw in the Zero Fire announcement in at the last minute! Here's to another year of an endless array of worthy games draining our wallets haha.
Gonna be extremely disappointed if R-Type Final 3 Evolved doesn't drop on Steam. It's good to see they actually put time and effort into the new stages as they look fantastic, I just hope some of that graphical love goes to the original game as well (Looking at you, Stage 3.0). Also didn't realize Valfaris was getting a shmup spinoff, and thanks to a friend giving me a tip-off, seems Pocky and Rocky Reshrined is coming out on steam sometime soon, uncensored too! It's looking to be a great year for shmups! (Just have to sit and pray Devil Engine: IGNITION gets a release in the future... fingers crossed.) #BOMBA #VENGEANCE #SUPERSTAR #THUNDERFLAME #SHIELDMAIDEN #WITNESSME
Yeah I am really not hoping that it remains a Sony exclusive, that would be a shame. Cutting out too many potential players with that move. Just added you for a shot at the games. So good luck!
I can’t believe this video didn’t come up in my video feed until today. Stupid RUclips! I’m so hyped for these games! Wish I could afford them all. You’re so lucky you could play some early! Great work! #BOMBA #VENGEANCE #DRAINMEBABY #SUPERSTAR #THUNDERFLAME #SHIELDMAIDEN #WITNESSME
A lot of people had it as their top new shmup of 2022 so yeah, it's really good. I'm looking forward to what they make next, but more importantly I hope Sophstar sells well for them.
Man, bringing up the teleportation mechanic in Sophstar jarred my brain and made me want to revisit Velocity 2X on my PS4. That was a trip of an action game! The art wasn't amazing, but when I'm in the mood to test myself with crazy speedrunning levels, it really is trememdous! Glad to see Valfaris getting a sequel. I really liked it and Slain.
You won't be disappointed with that one. It feels like a dream to control, their input delay is nearly non existent and the extras are great. It's going to be a huge boon for Toaplan fans. And a legit online leaderboard for these games.
@@ShmupJunkie wow, thanks!thats all I need to know. I will still get the M2 as well to support them but it's cool so many release at once. BTW the cave butter had me in stitches and ot was great to see Timmy back!
Thanks Junkz for setting me up for 2023, I’m excited for the year!!!. 2022 highlight was on the past, getting the Konami shooters for the super famicon and Saturn but this year I’m locking with excitement to the future
you know what's funny? most of the shmups recommended for beginners are absolutely kicking my ass (referring to drainus in this case but not exclusively), while i have an easier time with titles that are often called harder 😂
Ha! To each their own. Did you ever see that old video I made called Best Shmups for Beginners? It really did have some good ones in there that are really accessible.
Iron Meat was developed by Mike Matei’s friend, Ryan and his company. You can see the passion and love they have for Contra. Excellent video, I discovered some new games
I just found out that M2 shottriggers has announced Toaplan arcade garage #3 Zero Fire! with Zero wing and Hellfire! I'll pick that one up on day one! It's a great time to be a classic shmup fan.
15:31 Timmy!! I miss you so much!! Anyways, I am kinda sad that there aren't much game that is similar to Gunstar Heroes. Still a great year for old school games.
I'm not sure how I missed this vid, I blame youtube... Great vid as always mate, I've got to say that Gunvein is fantastic and can't wait for the others! Keep on shooting! ;)
Glad you found it at least and sorry for the late reply. Trying to catch up on all the giveaway stuff. Gunvein really is great and we're all hoping for a console release sooner than later. But it's coming.
Nice one as always, always good to be educated on the new hotness (even though, as a Ladybug fan, I might have picked up Drainus day 1 on Switch haha) #BOMBA and have a great rest of 2023 !
I saw gunvein earlier while scouring steam sale, it would be the first time i play one from these developper, looks really rad with all those features! Thanks again for all the heads up, there were lots of cool find here, most of which i nver hear about anywhere else!
You’re very welcome. I do 2-3 videos like this per year so keep an eye out for updates! There’s already a lot more great games I’m looking forward to showing
Thanks for the video! As I got to the part abt Drainus, I got instantly hooked by the presentation and rushed to Steam to check it out, only to realise I already have it Geez it's so much easier to get excited abt getting a game than actually getting committed to playing it
It takes no time to buy a game but plenty to actually play and enjoy it. Believe me I know. I usually don't get to playing many until it's time for the review.
Outstanding coverage of so many great games and games-to-come! I own or have played the demos of several of these, but boy does this video's cup runneth over :) It's a nice problem to have when there are too many great games on the horizon to play on any given weekend! Looking forward to your in-depth videos and coverage in 2023, Shmup Junkie! #vengeance #drainmebaby #superstar #thunderflame #shieldmaiden #witnessme #bomba
One retro-style game that I am definitely looking forward to getting released this year (hopefully) is "Freedom Planet 2", since I loved playing the original when it was released on the Nintendo Wii U back in 2015, and I have been eagerly waiting for the sequel to be released on home consoles for over six years now.
What's cool is the demo is very bare bones, as I see him posting a ton of updates on twitter with all kinds of mechanics. So there is still a lot to be added and done. I'm looking forward to it too.
And thanks for watching and enjoying. If it’s not a game I want to play or I’m excited for it’s not a game I’m going to show. Will have another new games 2024 video coming up in the next months again! Some real bangers I’m looking forward to.
Your channel is one of my new favourites of the past 12 months I've discovered. Looking forward to the next preview video you were teasing. What game is the music at the very end of the video from?
You have no idea how happy i am that old school style games are still going strong. I like new games with fancy graphics but nothing makes me happier than an old school, hard as balls side scroller or metroidvania.
Welcome! And sorry for the slow reply. This video had a ton of comments so just catching up. Glad you enjoyed it and hope you find other similar vids you enjoy too.
Retro: Recent Nostalgia From The 1960s-90s Any item at least 15 years old can count as retro. However, you can also call something retro if it's new but still evokes vibrant styles like Mod or Maximalism. The 1960s was also a revolutionary time for fashion.
super emocionado por todos estos futuros lanzamientos, en especial rayz y rtype final 3, y tengo que decir que dead end city me hiso recordar super spy hunter de nes
2 Days to go for Toaplan collection! I am taking Wednesday off for blister recovery. Was playing some Aero Fighters and UN Squadron all weekend to get my shmup focus up but seeing Moonrider...WoW! I'll be playing some Revenge of Shinobi instead for the next few days hehe. #BOMBA #VENGEANCE #DRAINMEBABY #SUPERSTAR #THUNDERFLAME #SHIELDMAIDEN #WITNESSME

Even I was missing Timmy a bit haha, turns out he was moonlighting. I've been doing videos where it didn't make sense to have him on so when there was a good opportunity I made it happen. Time to start working on another very long form video... already deep in it.
another Excellent video junkie, 2023 is becoming a pretty good year for gaming or at least for indie developers. Iron Meat looks awesome and I can't wait to play it and I didn't know about the plethora of shmups being released is overwhelming!. Too many games too little time! #BOMBA
Because it really plays almost identical to Contra and the stages are very straight forward. It doesn’t have the exploration of Turrican, but I can definitely see where you’re coming from. It has a bit of that look.
@@ShmupJunkie yes and both the character and way of aiming is very similar - as well as the music just pumping up the game. I’m looking forward to its release!
A big part of it was them getting Boghog on the design and programming, it's very much his game aside from the graphics and music. So I hope they utilize him again for any similar games they do.
Oh, man, Iron Meat looks incredibly exciting. I'm going to keep my eye out for the physical release on Switch! Moonrider looks fantastic too. The fast pace and heavy action really does for it to make it feel like an awesome blend of Shinobi with a Contra-like or something like that.
Moonrider is like a lost Mega CD game, if anyone ever used the system's full potential to produce a top tier precision action platformer, keeping the MD's limited colors, but utilizing the Mega CDs extended storage, CPU and scaling/rotation capabilities. It doesn't sound like you played Super Shinobi 2 much? The running and downkick mechanics are straight from that game and Moonrider plays very much like a no shuriken's speed run. Super Shinobi 2 is a true 16-bit action masterpiece. Speaking of Shinobi, have you ever played Shadow Gangs? It's an excellent tribute to the arcade Shinobi and Shadow Dancer (arcade and MD) games. It was a bit rough then it came out but the dev has really polished it since then. I put dozens of hours into that game recently. So, you like Alien Wars better than Hard Corps? Iron Meat must be better than Blazing Chrome (the game next my playlist)? Thanks for the video! Added a bunch of new games to my Steam wishlist!
Never played Shadow Gangs no, so thanks for the heads up. I'll check it out and see what it's about. I do like Hard Corps too it's like quick boss rush that's great to run through, but I did find the SNES game just memorable overall. They're both good of course. You know, I actually do like Iron Meat more than Blazing Chrome and it's not done yet. BC definitely has more of it's own flavor going and is Contra inspired. Iron Meat is straight up another Contra game, no BS. It's just done really well and I know people are going to dig running it on hard, it's that kind of game.
Awesome list. I'm looking forward to the Gunvein physical. Great game! BTW, Sophstar got a PEGI physical release that dropped December 30th. I think it's sold out at VGP and Redart games though.
It's not going there. What's interesting is the demo is just a very basic representation of what I see now in the works. The dev is posting so many things on his twitter and new mechanics that aren't in the demo yet at all.
I love these lists because these kinds of action games are always ignored by 99.9% of "most anticipated" lists, so I never have a clue of what's coming out. But so many of these games look sick! And I cannot recommend Drainus enough to commenters, especially if you're a fellow Shmup Scrub like I am - It's mega accessible difficulty-wise, but the level design, core gameplay mechanic, and presentation still make it a JOY to play. It's not like many other easy shmups that become boring without much going on. Honestly it may be my new favorite shmup, although I'm still a scrub trying to break in to the real meat of the genre, haha
Aside from some indie and smaller channels, I agree, these games don't get shown or talked about compared to so much other riffraff I have little interest in. So I like to do this every few months to update everyone on what I think is cool and upcoming.
That game is looking really cool too, I wanted to get it in here but ran out of time. I'd love for the dev or someone to get in touch with me and an expanded build for the next video like this. I'd gladly feature it.

Great work!

Thank you. And it's not too late! You still made it in time and just entered you for all these
@@ShmupJunkie Thank you!
Of all the shumps I think Sophstar impresses me the most it has a lot of variety..
Great stuff as always.Great to hear that the steam toaplan collection is a good one-counting the hours till that one is out!
@@then1533 Timmy moonlighting on the Electric Underground channel is an idea I wanted to do for a while 🤣
Retro games are everywhere in 23
Awesome video, please do more. I love Shmups ❤, specially when they come physical to the Nintendo Switch
Thank you for showing us this collection. I have been making a list of all these, I want my retro game collection and this has been so much helpful!
You're welcome! Glad it was helpful.
Can't wait to sit back and watch this tonight. Thanks for the videos you make , always appreciated.
You're welcome! Please enjoy and hide your wallet! 😂
GREAT GAMES!!!!! 🤯
Gunvein was quite a surprise. It is so much fun and motivating, I really get this: “one more round”- vibe from it!
Thanks Junkz for setting me up for 2023, I’m excited for the year!!!. 2022 highlight was on the past, getting the Konami shooters for the super famicon and Saturn but this year I’m locking with excitement to the future
Super excited for Iron Meat, love me a good Contra style run and gun
AND GIVE ME THE TOAPLAN COLLECTION ON SWITCH,MY BODY IS READY
Great video Junkie! Always cool to hear about new indie games. #bomba #vengeance #drainmebaby #superstar #thunderflame #shieldmaiden
Thanks. And you're IN for all these games. Good luck!
Already got a few of these but glad to see there's more coming! Just inject the games into my veins and let's go already! Great video by the way.
aside from Giveaway comment. i saw this video seems like weekly retro game news. very rare finding a Gaming news primarily for retro games like this.
Moonrider is on Switch currently as well. Great Video (as usual)!
you know what's funny? most of the shmups recommended for beginners are absolutely kicking my ass (referring to drainus in this case but not exclusively), while i have an easier time with titles that are often called harder 😂
U’re one of my best source of « games i didn’t know until now », keep it on !
I just found out that M2 shottriggers has announced Toaplan arcade garage #3 Zero Fire! with Zero wing and Hellfire! I'll pick that one up on day one! It's a great time to be a classic shmup fan.
Yes! I included it toward the end of this video too. Always exciting to get the next M2 Toa-port. Maybe next we will finally see Tatsujin and Ou!
15:31 Timmy!! I miss you so much!!
Anyways, I am kinda sad that there aren't much game that is similar to Gunstar Heroes. Still a great year for old school games.
Timmy missed being dumb on camera as usual haha
I'm not sure how I missed this vid, I blame youtube... Great vid as always mate, I've got to say that Gunvein is fantastic and can't wait for the others! Keep on shooting! ;)
Glad you found it at least and sorry for the late reply. Trying to catch up on all the giveaway stuff. Gunvein really is great and we're all hoping for a console release sooner than later. But it's coming.
Nice one as always, always good to be educated on the new hotness (even though, as a Ladybug fan, I might have picked up Drainus day 1 on Switch haha)
#BOMBA and have a great rest of 2023 !
Thanks. And you're in for a shot at Gunvein.
@@ShmupJunkie Gotcha, will sure do!
Thanks for the video!
As I got to the part abt Drainus, I got instantly hooked by the presentation and rushed to Steam to check it out, only to realise I already have it
Geez it's so much easier to get excited abt getting a game than actually getting committed to playing it
It takes no time to buy a game but plenty to actually play and enjoy it.

Thanks, and just added you for all these games. If only many of us could find time to play even half of them, it's overwhelming but in a good way.
Hell yeah, so happy to see Timmy again 😂 "LLLEEETTTTSSSS GGGOOOOOOO!!!!"
One retro-style game that I am definitely looking forward to getting released this year (hopefully) is "Freedom Planet 2", since I loved playing the original when it was released on the Nintendo Wii U back in 2015, and I have been eagerly waiting for the sequel to be released on home consoles for over six years now.
I really appreciate your content! I've added several new games to my Steam wishlist while watching this vid.
Prison City is what Power Blade 3 should be. I told the dev that, I love it probably my favorite on this list.
What's cool is the demo is very bare bones, as I see him posting a ton of updates on twitter with all kinds of mechanics. So there is still a lot to be added and done. I'm looking forward to it too.
Another awesome video sir, brilliant, have wishlisted all that are available to do so.
And I'm sure the devs appreciate it! So thank you
Every Shmup Junkie upload is like a warm sunrise
I'll take that along with a tequila sunrise thank you 😂
Literally the first streamer with an actual boom ass game line up !! I appreciate the video
Gunvein
@@then1533 much appreciated!
Coming back and watching this again. We got great stuff this year
Loved the video waiting for the top new retro games 2024 video 🦾😅🦾
I’m here to maybe win something.
But man, Gunvein is freaking awesome. Super hyped for Dodonpachi Daioujou M2STG, more so than Zero Fire.
Great video and have not heard of a lot of these. I added them all to Steam and will get them at some point when they go on sale.
You have no idea how happy i am that old school style games are still going strong. I like new games with fancy graphics but nothing makes me happier than an old school, hard as balls side scroller or metroidvania.
Many of us still prefer the older pixel art and style myself included, especially when it's so well done like some of these games.
Awesome video. Just got into retro/arcade games last year. Thanks for the recommendations.
You're welcome! Awesome how many great incoming games there are to be excited about.
Absolutely love retro games, so much to look forward to. Wrote quite a few down 🙂🙂😃😃
Really enjoyed this, just subscribed.
Welcome! And sorry for the slow reply. This video had a ton of comments so just catching up. Glad you enjoyed it and hope you find other similar vids you enjoy too.
@@ShmupJunkie thanks man
Looking forward to Valfaris Mecha Therion 😊
Retro: Recent Nostalgia From The 1960s-90s
Any item at least 15 years old can count as retro. However, you can also call something retro if it's new but still evokes vibrant styles like Mod or Maximalism. The 1960s was also a revolutionary time for fashion.
Who needs a Super Bowl when you’ve got THIS?! 👾
I heard there was some football game on today but not sure what that noise is all about. 😂
Awesome review 👏, I'm definitely picking up a few of these games. Especially Iron Meat.👍🤙
Thanks! Loved Iron Meat and anticipating it myself quite a bit.
super emocionado por todos estos futuros lanzamientos, en especial rayz y rtype final 3, y tengo que decir que dead end city me hiso recordar super spy hunter de nes
You're IN for a shot at all of these so good luck. Keep an eye on my community posts for the winners. They've now patched the Toaplan releases 3 times with a lot of improvements. Hope to see them keep coming.
@@ShmupJunkie Nice thanks! Truxton arcade is crazy hard!
Can't wait to check out Prison City and Shinobi non Grata in particular!
Another epic Shmup Junkie video? I'm in!
I was just about to comment about how I wonder how Timmy is doing . Then boom, there he Is lol. I missed good ol Timmy . And yeah Junkie you're cool too I guess . As many others have said I really look forward to your videos, they're always so damn good and I like that they're longer form .
#BOMBA
Wow! Moonrider looks like a Megadrive succesor of Hagane.
You refer to Contra when talking about Iron Meat, but I see Turrican - and that’s a great thing!
Valfaris Mecha Therion is freaking fantastic them visuals are stunning and love the mele aspect
Gunvein looks very impressive from one of my favorite indie devs. I love those guy's, they have came a long way since the Dreamcast day's..
A big part of it was them getting Boghog on the design and programming, it's very much his game aside from the graphics and music. So I hope they utilize him again for any similar games they do.
Ikaruga 2.0
Oh, man, Iron Meat looks incredibly exciting. I'm going to keep my eye out for the physical release on Switch!
Moonrider looks fantastic too. The fast pace and heavy action really does for it to make it feel like an awesome blend of Shinobi with a Contra-like or something like that.
Man i can't wait for Iron Meat to come to Switch im a huge Contra fan so this is right up my alley!
You and many others I’ll bet. It’ll go Steam first as usual but I know they have a Switch release planned.
I am hyped for Gunvein PS4,...holding out for a physical release sometime this year 🤞
Nice video!!! So much new cool games for me.
Thanks! Please enjoy the discovery.
Awesome list. I'm looking forward to the Gunvein physical. Great game!
BTW, Sophstar got a PEGI physical release that dropped December 30th. I think it's sold out at VGP and Redart games though.
I'm glad to hear it's selling well enough to sell out. That's good news!
Whoa. Tons of good stuff incoming!
Best thing on Sophstar. A ship is a giant mech turtle!

You're IN for a shot at these games, so good luck!
I love your content man, thanks to you I'm rediscovering genres that have always pushed me away due to their difficulty. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! And will do. Working hard on the next one.
Ahh Prison City! I was about to try its demo but I got distracted by Eigengrau and Grim Guardian.
It's not going there. What's interesting is the demo is just a very basic representation of what I see now in the works. The dev is posting so many things on his twitter and new mechanics that aren't in the demo yet at all.
Praise indies and smaller developers, it made me come back into gaming after almost abandoning it fully during the 7th generation od consoles.
Good video, already have Gunvein and Moonrider. Great games
I can't wait for Gravity Circuit! Hoping you get to review it soon.
That game is looking really cool too, I wanted to get it in here but ran out of time. I'd love for the dev or someone to get in touch with me and an expanded build for the next video like this. I'd gladly feature it.
Yet another fantastic video; as always, worth the wait. Some definite bangers in the line up.
