Fantastic old motors for their time. Every old fellow in Australia over 60 probably thrashed them around in their youth and had a ball. I still have one in a 59 ute and it gets along fine.
+TommyTwobats Yep, those old motors didn't make much. That's why everyone considered the old Valiants to be such powerhouses. While the Fords and Holdens were making 75hp (EJ Holden) and 101hp (XL Falcon) the Valiants made 145hp (AP5 Valiant).
imagine how many young guys abck in the day had an FJ and wanted something like this in it.. im sure most attempts at modding the grey ended up no better than the factory rated 60-75 hp..
My first car, 2 door lj torana s 138 3 on the tree. Painted yellow and black (xu-1 style). All show n very little go. But jeeza it held up well, considering I'd flog the shit out of it EVERY TIME I drove it.
What do you think you could do with a worked Falcon 144 c.i. engine. Would it be fair to say if this 138 makes 135 BHP with a small cam, could you get the 144 up to 160?
Well done, to get a grey to rev that hard was where it gained its HP, well done again but I would like to see it stay there for even a full minute. Each to there own but why choose the engine ? they to me were pathetic, they needed a low ratio diff to get them up a steep hill so at sixty MPH they were just about valve bouncing, they could get close to 30 mpg but so did the pommy Zephyr witch could blow of a early Holden with ease. They were not much of a car but I will admit they were tough, the could handle the rough outback roads, also at least to me again they were not all that good to look at, the FC,FB,HD were OK and the Monaro
More nonsense it never ends. These engines powered Holden's boats forklifts and who knows what else for 16 years. They where sedate standard but bored out ,hotcam head multiple carbs exhaust etc they went very well. And contrary to popular opinion and we did not blow them up on a weekly basis. Also balance ,lightened flywheel main bearing supports.
There was also the Canadian cast grey engine block with high Nickel content , around 150 were made, l had one in a FC Holden l bought off a old skool drag racer back in the 1980's, triple downdraught carbs on a speco manifold, cam & extractors, the bloke l bought it off had photos of the FC launching off the line with both front wheels off the ground.
Piece of crap,we use to race these shit boxes , including using the repco xflow head and waggot twin cam even used the southcott rotary valve head , all crap, and you better becareful on the back off, they have a serious fault in the cranks that like to snap at about 3200 rpm.

Legendary engine and love a workover.
nice one old school brings back happy memories
Nice one. Hope the old fella can handle the extra grunt.
60 h.p from the factory! Wow. Didn't realise what a leap the reds were. It should be painted grey! My 173 got 118h.p.

Ended up being 75 hp by the time the ej came out
@@chrishenderson5094 but they had decent torque for their HP

Nice, my first was two door LJ with the 173 and Auto
@@STREETMACHINETV I could only dream of a 173. big block territory 🙂
That Torana motor was actually a red motor much better engineering than a grey motor coincidental that it has the same cubic capacity.
How much for a motor like that

@@chrishenderson5094 because making the most of something within its limits is beautiful.

Grey motor painted red haha
considering plasticine has more integrity than these old grey blocks
dingus malingus Thinking the same.
Nonsense they could handle a good thrashing. Once thru a rod in a179 straight out the side no 6 piston and hit the starter motor.
No that's not correct, seen many that are very strong.Maybe you had a dud or did something really wrong
