Sad Wings created the template for Priest and built them a live rep but at the time didn't sell many records at all. That came later. So for me it remains a most underrated album, possibly the most underappreciated album in heavy rock.
Good on you for picking up Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. All 3 of these were a significant influence on Judas Priest, especially early Priest. They got the whole dark and evil sounding vibes and riffs from Sabbath, blues from Zepp and general speed and shred from Purple. Judas Priest were probably the most important pioneer of speed metal, but not the first. Purple were first with songs like Speed King and Fireball (I believe this is the first instance of double kick drumming in rock/metal). And yes, Judas Priest themselves were an influence on Iron Maiden, along with the aformentioned bands (especially Purple), and (Ronnie Dio-fronted) Rainbow.

When I did a commentary for my Top 100 Artists list here's what I wrote for Judas Priest (which I ranked #20): "Looking back, it's hard to overstate how important Priest were in developing heavy metal from its roots in Zeppelin, Sabbath, and Purple into what it would become. They essentially took the dark, heaviness of Sabbath, the speed of Purple, and combined it with the compositional complexity of Zeppelin to create the template for all metal that came after. Priest were also the band that helped bring metal to the mainstream at the start of the 80s, and though they subsequently faltered trying to maintain that mainstream limelight, they eventually found their way back with numerous highlights in the 80s before setting a new standard for speed metal with Painkiller in the 90s." This track was from their second album, which was a quantum leap in terms of evolution from their first album, which was much more traditional hard rock. A lot of people think that this is the album where almost all of the generation of metal bands after Sabbath/Zeppelin spring from. Personally it's never been among my personal favorites because I really dislike the engineering and think most of these songs sound better live. From their 70s material I much prefer Stained Class, which is probably my favorite JP album overall. What's remarkable is that you can basically hear the entire evolution of metal throughout JP's catalog, and they even kept up with the extreme metal bands of the 80s when they released Painkiller.
As a long time Priest fan I couldn't agree more with this analysis. My favorite thing with Priest is the ever evolving nature of their music. Many fans like 90's priest, Painkiller, some 80's and others 70's. I have always enjoyed the changes over time. My car is on shuffle through all albums and live performances so I get quite a mix.
Priest is a band that sounded SO much better live then on the record. The pace they played songs live was how they should habe been recorded. Best examples are Parental Guidance and Breaking the Law!
Sad Wings of Destiny is one of my favourite albums. I really like the final part of "Victim of changes", the way vocals sound in "The ripper", the calmness and spacial feeling of "Dreamer Deceiver", the riffs and Halford's vocals in general. I think the track I like the least is "Genocide", the chorus has a dissapointing lack of energy.
I hit the like button 10 times. Yes, this is probably lacking the harmonic complexity to impress a classical composer. But this is one of the best rock songs of all time.
80’s priest was half and half for me, some good stuff and some not so good stuff. 90’s Priest was essentially a one shot deal with Painkiller (not dismissing Jugulator but it didn’t really leave a mark). 70’s Priest is something else, excellent stuff to be found on those records! I’d definitely go for “Victim of Changes” at some point, but “Beyond the Realms of Death”, “Run of the Mill”, or something from the 80’s like “The Hellion/Electric Eye” would be cool!
Doug I am so happy to see you work this tune(s) out. I have watched many, if not most, of your videos over the past few months and was going to write to you and suggest you taste these two tracks. Omg thank you Uncle for your interpretation. OMG I would give anything to have had your Keyboard skills from this. You realize this is from the 70's before Maiden et al??? This Vocal is a Landmark- Iconic Performance!
Sad Wings of Destiny was a full-fledged 80's metal album, long before the 1980's ever reared its head. A monumental entry into the long, raging, history of heavy metal. Tragically went unnoticed during its time (ca. 1976)
These two songs are my favorite, and the solo is the best solo I have ever heard....Dreamer starts off slow and keeps building ,then Deceiver delivers the goods.....
Sad Wings of Destiny is just a mind blowing experience from beginning to end. 10/10. Almost other worldly. I remember laying on my bed with headphones listening, staring at the cover just being transported.

@@ale.2p284 I think the songs on Sad Wings are great, I just don't like the production and think they all sound better live.
I hit the like button 10 times. Yes, this is probably lacking the harmonic complexity to impress a classical composer. But this is one of the best rock songs of all time.
Did we just make a Priest fan... Hell yea
Definitely a one and out for the 90s but man that album just crushes from start to finish.
Spot on man!! Some of the absolute best hard rock/metal of the 70's.
Their 2018 album, Firepower, was surprisingly amazing.
Don’t forget Angel of Retribution. I love that album.
Absolutely agreed
Judas Priest finallyyy!! Looking forward for more JP videos
Simplesmente incrível marcou toda minha adolescência essa canção
Rob's vocals are rare gems with unworldly range. NEXT try "Victim of Changes", same album.
Doug I am so happy to see you work this tune(s) out. I have watched many, if not most, of your videos over the past few months and was going to write to you and suggest you taste these two tracks. These two songs are one of my all time favorites not just from Priest, but from pretty much all artists. 30+ years later and a full listen still gives me goosebumps. I love watching you react to these songs, applying your vast knowledge of music and your objective ear. I am so glad you enjoyed what I consider some of the best audio selections around. Thank you.
And''''''' Damn'', you have some amazing ability in music to be able to just play along like that'
Thank you Doug! Favorite album right now!
very well done analysis - thank you!! other Priest tunes - The Sentinel, Hellion/Electric Eye, The Sinner, Green Manalishi (cover), Genocide
Omg thank you Uncle for your interpretation. OMG I would give anything to have had your Keyboard skills from this. You realize this is from the 70's before Maiden et al??? This Vocal is a Landmark- Iconic Performance!
don't know how i missed this one. definitely my "daily doug" pantheon!
The harmonies Rob creates with those high notes at the end of dreamer are so moving.
Well Doug, welcome to the world of the GREAT Rob Halford!!!
Sad Wings of Destiny was a full-fledged 80's metal album, long before the 1980's ever reared its head. A monumental entry into the long, raging, history of heavy metal. Tragically went unnoticed during its time (ca. 1976)
At last, Doug. I was waiting for the moment when you would find Judas :P
Either "Victim of Changes" or "Diamonds And Rust" I think would be interesting for a future Judas Priest reaction.
This and Hear Comes the Tears ... two great songs.
I absolutely loved you play along.
Run of the mill from the album Rocks Rolla which came out before that. What a song that is and it really showcases Rob's early vocal acrobatics.
Judas Priest fans love the differences in every album from pain killer to rockarolla
These two songs are my favorite, and the solo is the best solo I have ever heard....Dreamer starts off slow and keeps building ,then Deceiver delivers the goods.....
The single sonic sound set in the cosmos is the vibrating sound wave of the "big bang", start of the universe.
You are funny - "We have to talk about this", lol
"I haven't quite sensed the power yet..."
Oh my! :-D
By far the best review video you have made! Rob Halford is known as "The Metal God" and is considered one of the best Metal vocalists.
Thanks for the excellent commentary on this song! Much love
Sad Wings of Destiny is just a mind blowing experience from beginning to end. 10/10. Almost other worldly. I remember laying on my bed with headphones listening, staring at the cover just being transported.
Great comment on one of my favourite songs from JP. You got it to the point. Thank you for your work on YT.
The best Priest is the 70's Priest. My personal favorite is Stained Class.
That is a fav of mine too. Not a lame duck song on it.
I think they would have loved to have you in the studio Doug the way you jam over the song is cool y’all - not taking away from priest as they are the metal gods
true tenor indeed. Metal God.
You never disappoint!!
these are the videos i subbed for. Where you take a beloved song and add your own to it. Love it!
This is such a dreamy song it's beautiful. The lyrics and the tune seamlessly take us on a journey
Loving your channel, amazing content. Greetings from Portugal 🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹
The birth of the metal gods, amazing songs on this album
Smoke a j any time with ya Doug. Great song and group
Amazing selection. Two of my favourite tunes of all time. Halford here is not from this world...
Halfords gives me goosebumps. His vocal range is just incredible.
It’s fun to see your reaction to music I’ve been listening to for over 30 years. Lol love it
Thanks Doug...Love Rob...best metal singer ever. Sounds perfect live too.
