      They probably feel it doesn't need a remake thanks to "the dark side chronicles" that re did the main parts of the game.

    • @penguinjay
      @penguinjay 2 года назад +1

      @@soulstice18 wasn't that the on rails shooter? That's whack, that's more like a good version of gun survivor, or a sequel to dead aim. This one missed my scope, I knew it existed, but my buddy had the dreamcast. I'm finally back to it. And it's becoming a tossup between re2 and Code veronica of which is the best RE game for me. It's so good. It's funny the stories are a continuation from re 2 for claire and re1 for chris.
      This is definitely a boss ass game. The last of the classic style RE games. It could definitely use a Re:make. The third one isn't that good and thus, the remake wasn't either.
      In re2 the intertwining stories make you play it twice. In CV they just make the game really long. With the choices you make in one part affecting the player in the second part. So very similar to re2. Foreal, this and re2 are the best resident evil games. I'd buy a remake of this day 1 if they don't change the line about Alexandria being a crossdressing freak. HAHA. Day 1, as long as they don't sanitize it.
      I bet they change too much in re4 remake for people to love it. That would be the longest of the remakes yet though, so idk, they better just make tasteful adjustments and not remove iconic parts. Im afraid they are going to sanitize it too since they removed parts in the VR. Capcom, man. Idk what they are thinking sometimes.

    I played this game on the Dreamcast, and it was amazing. The Dreamcast was hampered by Sega's reputation for churning out inferior hardware--that started during the Genesis (which was an unfair comparison to the newer SNES) and was reinforced with the lackluster Saturn. The Dreamcast was a monster, could do it all, and it didnt have the Playstation's nagging problem of going thermal. The unique memory inserts in the controller's allowed you to see your health at a glance. It was an amazing experience--I still have it 20 years later.

    • @JustPlayingTheClassics
      @JustPlayingTheClassics 3 года назад

      @Paul Bell Sony's early hardware, specifically the SCPH 100x, was known for overheating and honestly general problems until around the SCPH-5000+ models or so. Obviously best model to have is the last one (SCPH-900x) as far as reliability, but the other, earlier models have certain features like IO ports users may want.
      I knew many individuals who had experienced problems related to this and the general solution was to use the unit upside down (at least regarding the laser issues). Yes, this works! Not a great, long term, or permanent solution, but it'll get you through the last disc of whatever RPG until you replace that bad unit. :p

      Dreamcast also had anti-aliasing. With or without AA games often looked and played slightly better on Dreamcast than PS2. Code Veronica, Soul Calibur, Quake 3 Arena immediately come to mind.
      The Genesis also kicked the SNES butt in many versions of the same game for both systems. The sound chip was an acquired taste though.

    Really enjoying these RE retrospectives (and the rest of your channels content). I recently played through this game on PS4 and highly enjoyed it. However despite the creepy setting, the monsters, the controls (which were so clunky) and the infuriating Steve boss battle - the scariest thing of all was Claires reunion with Chris. I'm not sure what image they wanted to portray there but there were several scenes where I half expected them to lean in and kiss each other. It was... creepy. Not to mention Claire constantly saying "please promise me you'll never leave me again" and even the end ranking screen has her linking arms with Chris as they walk down a street. It was all just a bit... weird!
    Great game though. Really solid survival horror game.

    It's interesting seeing these older videos of your's.
    For me, personally, I never got into any of the early Resident Evil games. My friends owned a few of them, between them, but time spent at your buddies house was limited, even if you got to spend the time on the weekends back in the day. And they had other games to play.
    For me, my personal survival horror games were Parasite Eve, 1 and 2. And Dino Crisis, 1 and 2. Those were my babies. I played a bit of the RE games but they just didn't have a spot in the limited room and time of my younger heart.
    However, it was Resident Evil 4 that got my interest, and my exposure to it on the gamecube was enough for me to eventually buy it for myself on the ps2. A friend later got RE5 for XBOX, and it was "okay" but didn't impress me. For me personally RE4 was my Goldielocks zone.
    It's nice to get a perspective on the RE games I never saw or played.

    Interesting video, I love the Critical Drinker character for movies and can see that you were softer on video games but no less informative, kudos for mentioning that Code Veronica X made it to the Dreamcast too, but in actual fact when it came to sales, both the Dreamcast and PS2 managed to notch up over a million sales each. I think Code Veronica being ported to the PS2 once the Dreamcast was dying out was just good business sense rather than it failing to reach it's potential.

    As a hardcore RE fan what can I say? Excellent retrospective Drinker. It's a shame you didn't play the original on DC as I was blown away on release day, pre-PS2. However at least you didn't miss one of the most vital REs in history. I've still got my original DC copy in my cupboard, no doubt collecting dust as I've got all the latest HD updates of course. Resident Evil was the ONLY reason I bought a GameCube, to which Capcom had entered exclusive rights with Nintendo with in the early 00s (RE remake, RE0, RE4 etc). But that's another story...
    Just for the record, I prefer the original C:Veronica 'Alexia vs Wesker' fight scene than the C:VeronicaX version. In the latter Wesker is more of a match for Alexia. In the former however he clearly shows fear, is injured more easily and runs away once distracted. I guess it's all just a matter of taste though.

      there's just something about playing games on certain consoles that makes them more fun. my favorite version of re2 was the n64 version. it was amazing to see them cram that whole game on a cartridge, and aside from the fmv scenes, i thought it was the best looking version.

      i've been replaying those same games as well. code veronica and re0 are my favorites because they are the most challenging and have the most complex level designs, making them more difficult to memorize than the others, which makes them more replayable for me. i know 0 gets a lot of hate but there are a lot of great things about it, i especially like how the partner swapping works in that game, it was so unique and perfectly done. it would have been nice if they had added a side pack to make the inventory management slightly less tedious but once you beat it a few times and know what you need and when, it's not that bad.

    Hold on a minute, the reason Resident Evil 2 was scrapped for the Sega Saturn wasn't due to hardware issues. It was halted because the Saturn had poor sales and was largely discontinued in all regions but Japan. The Sega Saturn was actually a much stronger machine than the PlayStation but given its complex design made it very difficult for developers to get the full potential out of it in a typical development cycle. This is also why it took almost 20 years for proper emulation to show up. Sega's hardware designers were forward thinkers that pushed the envelope way to far. It wouldn't be for another 9 years before developers began tinkering with multiple processors in games.

    • @itadapeeza8559

      But its a Japanese game and the saturn was huge in japan...

    • @Sinn0100
      @Sinn0100 3 года назад

      @@itadapeeza8559
      The reason for this is down to cost versus profits. The cost to port RE2 to the Sega Saturn would have been astronomical. Most developers back then simply did not know how to program a game that utilized multiple processors. Had Capcom decided to run with RE2 for the Saturn they would have lost millions of dollars in the process...
      Once Sega shuttered all Sega Saturn development in the US big games like RE2 were dead in the water. Without the US market a game like RE2 becomes unsustainable. Lastly, it didn't help matters that the Resident Evil series is bigger in the West than it is in Japan.

    I never managed to beat Code Veronica X. Why? Two reasons. First, Bandernatchs. Those things sucked so much ammo and their mobilty made it impossible to avoid them. I finally gave up when playing as Chris, I ended up caught in a death loop. I was in caution status, I went through a door, and as soon as the game loaded, a Hunter took my head. After a couple dozen deaths, I gave up. I came back years later and tried to get out of the death loop. And shockingly, I did! Unfortunately, I hadnt played in so long i completely forgot where I was supposed to go and what I was supposed to do. So I gave up again and never picked it up again. But i still want a remaster! I just want them to decrease the danger of the Bandersnatch, and maybe give a little bit more ammo.

    Loved the video, but did want to make mention of your point regarding CVX. Code Veronica X most definitely did NOT have sharper graphics. The best looking version of the game is on Dreamcast. The PS2 was just not as capable a machine as the DC and ended up looking fuzzy (Dreamcast CV was progressive, PS2 interlaced; RIP Dreamcast)
    CV was the game that first dipped my toes into the RE universe, and the idea of horror in a video game being a mix as good as peanut butter mixed with chocolate. I do hope they do a remake. CVX was upsetting and it was the code base that all subsequent ports/remasters were built on.

    • @Marc_Araujo

    • @BlacklistBill
      @BlacklistBill 2 года назад

      @@Marc_Araujo that's not really what I was getting at. Each CV:X had to be built for the respective consoles, so resolution might give a sharper picture, but at the cost of things like fog rendering look. I mean the overall look/mood /atmosphere. I have read that the ps3 release of X is best because it is most faithful, plus at a much higher resolution. Fun fact: Dreamcast could actually do 480i output on the VGA cable.

    • @BlacklistBill
      @BlacklistBill 2 года назад

      @@Marc_Araujo Turns out the PS3 version isn't very good either in that they changed some effects which ruined the color of the game (and thus mood) AND was actually built from the Gamecube version. The only upside of the PS3 version is the higher res and widescreen. Additionally, the Dreamcast supports 480p and this was one of the games that could output 480p. Gamecube one supposedly looks like the PS2 in terms of mood (too dark). Lastly, the "X" versions of Code Veronica insert stupid, unnecessary cutscenes that make the overall game worse. I will go back to my "Dreamcast is definitively the best Code Veronica release" position.

    Code: Veronica was the point when RE began to lose its way for me. It began that slide into absurdity and the ridiculous, not to say RE was hyper-realistic before but even from the opening cutscene it's a sign of things to come. The game itself just never clicked with me and I was a huge fan of the series up to that point. I especially didn't connect with the characters, Claire didn't even feel like the same person from RE2 to me, Steve is obviously obnoxious and the antagonists are kind of silly (Wesker included).
    It's always felt like the black sheep to me, lost between classic RE and the revolutionary RE4. A remake might be interesting though.
