      Go super with 300. Nearly triple the energy, and if using 110 gr. VMAX or varmegeddon rounds, you have a greater chance of the bullet breaking up/diverting through a few walls before it becomes a problem for the neighbors.

    • @ewby_
      @ewby_ 9 дней назад

      @@CrashRacknShootthe biggest pro with 300blk for home defense is hearing safe rounds. Not everyone is single or no kids/family and able to put ear protection everywhere in their home.

    • @CrashRacknShoot
      @CrashRacknShoot 9 дней назад

      @ewby_ to be fair, it is only hearing safe with a suppressor. Subs are just as loud as any pistol, and supers are, well, supersonic lol.
      But if you're going to have a home defense firearm with a suppressor, 300 blackout with supersonics such as 110 gr VMAX loaded rounds or 115 gr Berger TAC bullets is about as perfect of a load for any threat with two legs as it gets. Will it be louder? Yes, of course. But it wont ring your ears, meaning no temporary hearing impairment and no long term damage. Everyone will be able to hear just fine during and after any altercation, which is the biggest plus for talking with dispatch on the phone, communicating with family and knowing where they are, being able to hear any other intruders in the house, etc.
      An 8" AR pistol in 300 with a suppressor is short enough to fit through a standard doorframe almost completely sideways without any extra manipulation. Doesnt sound like much until you try to slice the pie into a room with a fulle sized rifle.
      The whole package is shorter than an unsuppressed 16" AR rifle by a considerable margin. To be able to be that mobile with 1100 ft lbs of energy per round on tap for shots mostly under 15 yards is *FORMIDABLE.* It simply is the perfect close range PDW/HD round.

    • @CrashRacknShoot
      @CrashRacknShoot 9 дней назад

      @ewby_ when it is suppressed, supersonics *ARE* hearing safe. That's the point of the suppressor. That and flash suppression, but that's a different discussion entirely.
      Without it, subsonics mean nothing and are exactly as loud as any 9mm or other firearm.

    Hi Eric.. Off beat with this video, But, thanks for doing your informative video's.. I bought a SKS 20 years ago (numbers matching) from a Walmart.. I cleaned out cosmo all day and into the night, and test fired the rifle the next day with about 20 rounds of Tulammo (functioned good) then cleaned again and stored.. YEARS later, I saw your video cleaning your SKS.. After watching your video, I "panicked" and immediately grabbed the SKS from the closet and followed your step by step instruction.. Upon taken completely down, I was relieved to see that I did a pretty good job on my first cleaning years ago.. "BUT" I did notice some chipping of the blueing on the face of the trigger hammer, and in accordance with your video, I found the firing pin was installed "wrong" and was "STUCK" protruding from the block.. Removed pin, re-cleaned, and replaced.. Another 20 rounds of Tulammo, Shoot's great, much smoother, and back in the closet... Thank you so much.. Regards, Dan...

    I've had this discussion many times with many people and a 38 Special with you barricaded behind a bed with it pointed at the door and a cell phone in your hand with 911 on the end is a pretty good defense that will stop 99.9% ot threats. That being said my personal choice is a suppressed 11.5" AR with full house varmint loads piled in a 60 round Surefire mag with a red dot on top. I live in suburbia and I like my neighbors and I built a section of dry rock wall and another with insulation and siding to test those loads. There isn't much left after leaving the sidewalls of a house. That might not be everyone's cup of tea especially someone that doesn't train. Replace that 38 Special with a Mossberg 20ga 590 loaded with #2 buck or even a S&W FPC in 9mm, it really doesn't matter, an armed homeowner wins almost every time just don't think your going to clear your home. Set up a plan in a defensible location like a choke point and harden enturences to direct threats there and to protect your family and make sure you're on that phone.

    • @JohnSmith-f6o

      Agree on the idea of clearing the house. If you are a home owner call the police and set yourself up in just such a defendable choke point as you describe. Make it like a deer hunt. Don't give the advantage to the intruder by moving. Stay alive and defend your position until the police arrive.

    • @JohnSmith-f6o
      @JohnSmith-f6o 11 дней назад +3

      Agree. If people would stop shooting heavy controlled expansion bullets in their 223, and use varmint bullets the AR-15 won't penetrate excessively. A 50 grain soft point would work wonders for stopping 2 legged varmints.

      Depending on where or how you live, I would strongly suggest supersonic in that setup. You nearly triple your energy per round, and it will still be hearing safe. Loud, yes. But hearing safe in short durations. And if you're using VMAX loaded rounds, you also get the advantage of the bullet breaking up more quickly as it hits walls if you miss compared to the big, slow moving subsonic bullets.

    We have very little crime where I live but we did have an attempted break in down the street and they're getting more and more common everywhere. Shook up all the soccer moms who drive SUVs pretty severely. What scared them off is that almost everyone has motion triggered lights and Ring doorbells. The house across the street had a flood light system that popped on and every security camera on the street caught the three guys piling into a very indistinctive dark colored car, license plate covered, tearing down the street. However, our state is famous for virtually every house having at least one firearm and I'm sure that played a factor in their quick getaway.
    Middle to upper middle class neighborhoods in the Potato State are quite well armed, usually have cops as neighbors, and it's pretty risky to be a crook here. The detective in charge of the investigation lives in the neighborhood and we were talking about it at the pool at the clubhouse. He was saying that Constitutional Carry states with high percentages of firearm ownership dissuades potential crooks from home invasions and carjackings as much as any other factor including tough/weak on crime DAs, demographics, anything. FBI studies bear that out very clearly and unambiguously. 2A works, criminals are cowardly predators, if they think you're able to defend yourself they'll stay away.

    But,i live in the suburbs now and could never use a high power rifle in any situation cause there are houses close enough to spit on and kids everywhere!
    So now i keep a few 22lr staged thru out the house a 12g and keep a 38 special on me at all times!
    I know it doesn't solve the problems,but makes it more manageable and i feel better and not as hesitant.
    Still got to kno that shot is going to connect, but, if it doesn't, it won't go zipping into the 4year old kids' bedroom across the way. Or less of a chance anway.

    I watched a lot of test and they have shown that the 9mm JRN is one of the most penetrative round. The 556 rounds generally penetrate less that the vast majority of 9mm or even 45. The shotgun slug is one of the worst. The 556 round is so very loud, so it may harm you and your family's hearing. A good reason to do away with the horrible tax stamp, etc. on suppressors.
    Great advice on the walk-through. We have done that to help us plan as much as we can, but understand nothing is perfect.

      That is a completely different scenario. They don't care as much about over penetration since their family isn't sleeping there, and they'd 100% get cleared if they accidentally killed someone through a wall in a firefight, all of the blame would go on the person they were raiding the house for.
      If you're defending your home the last thing you want is rounds flying through your walls, tearing up your house, and potentially hitting family members.
      An AR in 5.56 is one of the last weapons I'd use for home defense, even if it's one of the first I'd pick to clear a house.

      A pistol caliber carbine is my first choice. With a 16 inch barrel the muzzle flash will be minimal or non existent because handgun cartridges are made for handgun length barrels so all or certainly most of the powder will be burned up before the bullet leaves a 16" barrel. Plus the longer barrel will, up to a point, give you a bit more velocity. Henry makes a 9mm PCC called the Homesteader, I think, also, Ruger makes a couple of variations of a 9mm PCC and Beretta used to make one as well, but I don't know if they still do.

    Level 4 armor's defining characteristic is stopping 30-06 AP. What 30-06 AP gets through that ball doesn't is level 3. You're going to need M993 or 8mm SmKH to reliably penetrate level 4. 110gr TAC-TX 300 BLK from an 8" barrel isn't going to help against armor better than 3A, but it'll have more energy than 5.56 from an 11.5" barrel.

    As a veteran of bother the army and law enforcement I have always (based on my experience) advised people to use shotguns for home defense (urban areas).
    I sudjust #4 or #2 birdshot. This reduces the risk of overpenatration through walls. Most invaders are not wearing body armor and this round will work well. If you need lore, then a bavk up pistol is advised.
    Suburban and rural areas a rifle is my choice.

    After watching all of Eric’s videos on the “over penetration” if any of you guys haven’t I highly suggest watching the absolute legend Paul harrels videos on the subject. He did several videos about how different calibers react when penetrating interior walls. Bottom line is use common sense and select a proper load. Any bullet including 22lr will zip through sheet rock/drywall so don’t rely on a magic bullet that won’t “over penetrate”.

    In any self defense situation it is important to remember there are hostile lawyers attached to each bullet or pellet you fire. There are instances of people using an AR in defense of their home and from the mid 19th century on there have been instances of someone using a .22 short for the same task. I try to land somewhere in between.
    Although it is possible to fantasize a team of 7 or more people armed with high capacity firearms and wearing level 3 armor requiring an MG3 with a full belt to defeat them, it is fairly unlikely here. Although I have a fairly wide spectrum to choose from, I think .45 Colt hollowpoints will probably handle most situations I might encounter. I envision little need to slide a cartridge into one of my Martini Henry carbines or a magazine into my AK or ARs.

    I would never use an AR in 5.56 for home defense. I fired one at an indoor range, and it had a very uncomfortable amount of blast; and I don't want to imagine what the noise without hearing protection would be like. And I'm not going to drop tons of money and jump through a bunch of hoops to have an SBR in .300 Blackout tricked out with a suppressor. Unless my house is invaded by a bunch of goons packing body armor, which is unlikely, my Mossberg 500 12 Gauge with #4 Buck is sufficient; and it's something I already have.

    Always a good topic!
    Folks must accept their living situation. People living in apts./Condos/Wherever your 'Neighbors' may be living on the OTHER SIDE OF THE WALL/CEILING/FLOOR, over penetration has to be considered.
    For myself, living very rural, we deal with things that could be INSIDE (Mostly rodents, but the occasional suicidal raccoon/'possum tries to get sneaky using our Pet Door(s)), but usually outside (ie, Bears, Mtn. Lions, coyotes, hell, even feral pigs are starting to move into the region!).
    So, we have a variety of platforms 'At-the-Ready.' From my Mossy .12, AR(s), .22 rifle and pistol, having a selection of tools suitable for the needed task is nice.
    Testing and using the appropriate ammunition also has to be given serious thought.
    Aim small, miss small!
