I used an Ak47/mini-14 at different times when i lived in the country 😊 with no neighbors. But,i live in the suburbs now and could never use a high power rifle in any situation cause there are houses close enough to spit on and kids everywhere! So now i keep a few 22lr staged thru out the house a 12g and keep a 38 special on me at all times! I know it doesn't solve the problems, but makes it more manageable and i feel better and not as hesitant. Still got to kno that shot is going to connect, but, if it doesn't, it won't go zipping into the 4year old kids' bedroom across the way. Or less of a chance anway. So yes, id for sure use a ar for home d as kong as i was in the proper environment for it! Great vid!
I watched a lot of test and they have shown that the 9mm JRN is one of the most penetrative round. The 556 rounds generally penetrate less that the vast majority of 9mm or even 45. The shotgun slug is one of the worst. The 556 round is so very loud, so it may harm you and your family's hearing. A good reason to do away with the horrible tax stamp, etc. on suppressors. Great advice on the walk-through. We have done that to help us plan as much as we can, but understand nothing is perfect.
one of the most common sense video i seen in a while. truly word for word is good to go. as a person who has personaly dealt wth this issue, inside hoe and houses.. i truly agree. stock, simple, reliable, knowledged.. awesome! thanx man and Semper Fi from the woods of Maine!
I have been building 125 grain ballistic tip rounds for my 300 BO pistol. I watched a video a few years ago, where subsonic 220 grain were blowing through multiple 2X4's. While the supers were being stopped by a couple of 2X4's, like you talked about. I have the Vortex UH-1 Gen 1, mounted on it. I also have a scope for it, just to play with longer range shooting.
At one time, I had some Hornady Varmit. It was like 50gr in a balistic tip. It may have even been a 45gr weight? It's going to be loud, inside the house.
You bring up some very important points. Something I feel worth mentioning is not just the layout but things like furniture. Example a very large bookshelf by bedroom walls. You can be the coolest calm person in the world and know exactly where every shot you take is going to go. But if the intruder starts shooting, they don't care. Just a thought. Thank you for your insight and perspective. Gets a person to thinking.
Another consideration is the construction of different walls in an apartment. My last apartment had a couple concrete walls behind/under the drywall. Knowing that I needed to be mindful of potential ricocheting and/or fragmentation going in undesired directions.
The only answer to this question is. If the police or military was gonna raid your house what weapon would they likely bring? The answer is most likely have an sbr ar15 or an m4. If its good enough for them in a home defense situation its good enough for me
That is a completely different scenario. They don't care as much about over penetration since their family isn't sleeping there, and they'd 100% get cleared if they accidentally killed someone through a wall in a firefight, all of the blame would go on the person they were raiding the house for. If you're defending your home the last thing you want is rounds flying through your walls, tearing up your house, and potentially hitting family members. An AR in 5.56 is one of the last weapons I'd use for home defense, even if it's one of the first I'd pick to clear a house.
@@COMMANDandConquer199 Ammo choice….. If you choose m855a1 for home defense we can all agree that’s a terrible idea unless ur in the sticks. However if you choose a 55gr Hornady hollow point or a VMAX round it’ll fragment so violently there likely wouldn’t be any of the round exiting the body. Some rounds of 5.56 are bad for home defense and some are extremely well suited for home defense.
@ That's a fair point, I haven't much looked into the performance of hollow point 556, I just assumed it would still zip right through given the muzzle velocity.
Awesome video, Eric! I'm currently in a condo, so I'm leaning towards my PCC for home defense. This was right on time for me because I've been going back and forth on this exact situation.
Great content as usual. You mentioned the PSA Jakl for a home defense option. My home defense rig is a 10.5” suppressed PSA .300BLK. I would personally argue the point of not messing with factory equipment. I’ll take/trust the Geissele trigger upgrade in-place if the PSA trigger all day long. 🤷🏻♂️
As a new person to self/home defense and being 60yrs old , my concern is not only over penetration but also in the event of needing to engage a self defense event and firing inside the possibility of disorientation due to the sound and vision from the muzzle flash. With those concerns what may be a good solution for those concerns. Love the channel. Thank you .
That is a hard question. A .410 shotgun with a self defense load might be for you. While not quiet, they are way more quiet then 12 gauge. And they don't have the penetration of a rifle or pistol round. I'm not sure how capable you are in the recoil department, but a .410 doesn't have much so that is covered as well. .410 doesn't have as much power as other options, but within the ranges of a house it should be plenty.
A pistol caliber carbine is my first choice. With a 16 inch barrel the muzzle flash will be minimal or non existent because handgun cartridges are made for handgun length barrels so all or certainly most of the powder will be burned up before the bullet leaves a 16" barrel. Plus the longer barrel will, up to a point, give you a bit more velocity. Henry makes a 9mm PCC called the Homesteader, I think, also, Ruger makes a couple of variations of a 9mm PCC and Beretta used to make one as well, but I don't know if they still do.
I don't care if you have plates or not. If you take 00 buck to the chest you're hitting the floor period, if not from the damage, just from the force of the hit.
In regards to ammo, I personally chose AAC Sabre blade 62gr since they’re non-bonded bullets. Hopefully never have to use it but also hopefully if I do, they break apart faster than anything else if I miss
Level 4 armor's defining characteristic is stopping 30-06 AP. What 30-06 AP gets through that ball doesn't is level 3. You're going to need M993 or 8mm SmKH to reliably penetrate level 4. 110gr TAC-TX 300 BLK from an 8" barrel isn't going to help against armor better than 3A, but it'll have more energy than 5.56 from an 11.5" barrel.
I have a couple of ARs, but neither are set up for inside home defense. For the inside, I have an 870 with no7 bird shot. It's not the most powerful round, but inside the house, it's more than enough, and dry wall stops it pretty well.
@@DinoNucci Are you stupid? You said “audible concussion would murder your situational awareness” dude you are dead wrong! Most human conflicts with firearms had soldiers not wearing hearpro and they still shoot people. A home invasion attempt happening at 20ft or less is gonna end in seconds you’ll get completely vibe checked by some 5.56 hollow points in close quarters. Your ears will ring boo hoo but at least you won’t be dead most of the people recommending a shotgun for home defense will be in the same boat. Unless you have a 300blk suppressed setup running subsonics hearing damage will just be a fact of life in a defensive shooting.
I prefer the Hornady Black 5.56 75gr HD SBR rounds for home defense. I would say it's more important to have training, practice with what you use, and know the layout and surroundings of where you are.
As a veteran of bother the army and law enforcement I have always (based on my experience) advised people to use shotguns for home defense (urban areas). I sudjust #4 or #2 birdshot. This reduces the risk of overpenatration through walls. Most invaders are not wearing body armor and this round will work well. If you need lore, then a bavk up pistol is advised. Suburban and rural areas a rifle is my choice.
@MS-1994 no 2 or 4 shot will put a hurting on anyone not wearing armor. Turkey shot will kill just as dead as buckshot with less chance of going through walls.
Lookin jacked, my dude! Been watching since the Barry days (RIP) and your health transformation has been impressive. MAHA! I use a suppressed 11.5” 5.56 AR loaded with Hornady 75gr SBR ammo for home defense. If it were just me, I might use my 12 gauge but my tiny wife can shoot my shorty AR way better than a shotgun.
After watching all of Eric’s videos on the “over penetration” if any of you guys haven’t I highly suggest watching the absolute legend Paul harrels videos on the subject. He did several videos about how different calibers react when penetrating interior walls. Bottom line is use common sense and select a proper load. Any bullet including 22lr will zip through sheet rock/drywall so don’t rely on a magic bullet that won’t “over penetrate”.
300 blkout, 8.6 blkout, and or the new 338 (hornady) arc, shorty (sbr or pistol) w/weapon light & suppressor setup and using your subsonic or supersonic ammo of choice for home defense, ftw!! Or your shotgun setup/option of choice.

If you live in Washington, I’d think twice before using an AR… no doubt the gun will be taken by LE during an investigation… even if you are clear, it’s not lawful to transfer the AR back to you…. Therefore, your rifle is gone.
All guns that have been used in a shooting will be taken. They are evidence. 🤷 All confiscated evidence MUST be returned back to you if the investigation is over. This is law 101. 🤷
12.5" side charger AR "pistol" with brace.. 20rd P-mag loaded with 70gn varmint loads, or good old 55gn SP's... LPVO 1-4 with Illuminated (and etched) reticle/ centering square... plus a Ruger SR40 by the bed, loaded with 15rds of hollowpoints ;)
Interesting. I would ‘t have thought of a riffle round that could pierce through armor to be more easilly slowed down by drywall or derailed by a twig.
Mossberg 850 turkey gun with the thumbhole stock n full open breacher choke with 0000 buckshot will cover, clear most rooms We have a code word if the family hears it they know to lay flat on the floor
55gr vmax for home defense, technically a varmint round, but over penetration is my biggest concern so a very light, fast, frangible, rapidly expanding projectile is what makes sense to me, and it's still going to have better ballistics than any pistol with less over penetration.
A very thorough discussion. To each his own of course. For me, any rifle is too much in a "something goes bump in the night" scenario. A pistol or at largest a PDW with a Surefire light would be my go-to for situation I hope I'm never in.
In any self defense situation it is important to remember there are hostile lawyers attached to each bullet or pellet you fire. There are instances of people using an AR in defense of their home and from the mid 19th century on there have been instances of someone using a .22 short for the same task. I try to land somewhere in between. Although it is possible to fantasize a team of 7 or more people armed with high capacity firearms and wearing level 3 armor requiring an MG3 with a full belt to defeat them, it is fairly unlikely here. Although I have a fairly wide spectrum to choose from, I think .45 Colt hollowpoints will probably handle most situations I might encounter. I envision little need to slide a cartridge into one of my Martini Henry carbines or a magazine into my AK or ARs.
I would never use an AR in 5.56 for home defense. I fired one at an indoor range, and it had a very uncomfortable amount of blast; and I don't want to imagine what the noise without hearing protection would be like. And I'm not going to drop tons of money and jump through a bunch of hoops to have an SBR in .300 Blackout tricked out with a suppressor. Unless my house is invaded by a bunch of goons packing body armor, which is unlikely, my Mossberg 500 12 Gauge with #4 Buck is sufficient; and it's something I already have.
Shotguns are fine but my #1 choice is a high capacity pistol in the caliber of your choice. Easy to maneuver inside a house instead of a rifle or a shotgun. In some states or cities, the shotgun is better because high capacity pistols are banned.
@@CyborgZeta I also think a small carbine with a short barrel, pistol grip in a pistol caliber would be fine as well, for those who cannot handle a shotgun.
@ I think a lever-action carbine could work too. I have a Rossi 92 carbine in .357 Magnum; very light and handy. Load it with .38 Specials, and it would make for a very low recoil HD option.
I've generally been hesitant to have my AR-15 at the ready for home defense until I get a suppressor. Yeah, I know the Mossberg I got leaning up against the wall is really loud too which is why my 9mm is generally within arms reach at all times whereas the shotgun is just a couple steps away. Or am I too fixated on the decibel level?
Always a good topic! Folks must accept their living situation. People living in apts./Condos/Wherever your 'Neighbors' may be living on the OTHER SIDE OF THE WALL/CEILING/FLOOR, over penetration has to be considered. For myself, living very rural, we deal with things that could be INSIDE (Mostly rodents, but the occasional suicidal raccoon/'possum tries to get sneaky using our Pet Door(s)), but usually outside (ie, Bears, Mtn. Lions, coyotes, hell, even feral pigs are starting to move into the region!). So, we have a variety of platforms 'At-the-Ready.' From my Mossy .12, AR(s), .22 rifle and pistol, having a selection of tools suitable for the needed task is nice. Testing and using the appropriate ammunition also has to be given serious thought. Aim small, miss small!
I've always considered the AR-15 platform to be the best home defense weapon, having 30 rounds (or 10, 20, 40, 60, etc) is a lot better than being stuck with only six to seven shotshells Will I likely need to fire more than a few shots? No, but, you don't prepare for the best, you prepare for the worst
I had my Swiss K31set up for home defense when I had no other long guns available to me. Crazy? Yeah, but that was the only serious firearm I had at the time, besides hand guns.
I can randomly shoot through 75% of my house. Have a hill on 2 sides and 5 miles of big timber on the other. Best part is my bedroom is againt the one wall i cant shoot through.
If I were to live in an apartment or a trailer park I would definitely use a 12 or 20 gauge loaded with either #4 buck or turkey loads. I live in a brick house and my neighbors are at least 250 yards from us. I have a 12 gauge loaded with 00buck and a 9mm handgun for my wife because I leave at 3:30 am every morning, and that 12 gauge is too much for her.

Let's be real... A 24" long barrelled AR-15 with a 4-16x scope using 40 Rd promags loaded with m855 ball is the ultimate home defense gun.
Lol. Nice.
At one time, I had some Hornady Varmit. It was like 50gr in a balistic tip. It may have even been a 45gr weight? It's going to be loud, inside the house.
What?@@crafty714
M-14 has better stopping power, so it beats the AR-15.
Would not go for a 5.56 AR unless I saw there were more than 3 guys on security camera. I love pondering our hypotheticals.
You look great Eric 🤘🏻 Great information as usual.
Another consideration is the construction of different walls in an apartment. My last apartment had a couple concrete walls behind/under the drywall. Knowing that I needed to be mindful of potential ricocheting and/or fragmentation going in undesired directions.
Great to see you back kickkng asssss
The only answer to this question is. If the police or military was gonna raid your house what weapon would they likely bring? The answer is most likely have an sbr ar15 or an m4. If its good enough for them in a home defense situation its good enough for me
Big facts
Right, and then you have to be "one louder" basically.
Awesome video, Eric! I'm currently in a condo, so I'm leaning towards my PCC for home defense. This was right on time for me because I've been going back and forth on this exact situation.
A PCC has all the disadvantages of both a pistol and a long gun. Choose one or the other and minimize the negatives.
Thank you .
You are wise!
Pistol calibers for indoors.
If in 9mm out of a 16" you will have Velocity in the lower 357 mag range. So load up with good quality 124gr +p
Gettin JACKED, Brother!
Respect
The perp comes in your home and no one worries about where his rounds are going. Just the homeowner has to be concerned where their rounds are going.
Thank you for making this video. I feel it a topic that’s never talked about.
Thank you for this important information.
223/556 is NOT for home defense.
The audible concussion would murder your situational awareness.
The marines of the 1st and 2nd battles of fallujah would disagree with you as well as all the US soldiers of Vietnam.
@dariodicarlo8745 the Marines and soldiers were fighting in your house huh??
@dariodicarlo8745 wrong
@DinoNucci you really embarrassed yourself by saying that
I prefer the Hornady Black 5.56 75gr HD SBR rounds for home defense.
Birdshot is not adequate for home defense.
@MS-1994 no 2 or 4 shot will put a hurting on anyone not wearing armor.
Turkey shot will kill just as dead as buckshot with less chance of going through walls.
Everyone knows that a .50 cal Barrett semiautomatic is the best home defense weapon.
Too long. 300 Win Mag shorty with a muzzle break
Thank you Eric
300 blkout, 8.6 blkout, and or the new 338 (hornady) arc, shorty (sbr or pistol) w/weapon light & suppressor setup and using your subsonic or supersonic ammo of choice for home defense, ftw!! Or your shotgun setup/option of choice.
Yes they can turn living pricks that steals your property, into a biomass in less a second. me i use RPG7's for home defence, although it does put a hole in wallet, due to the ammo, and damage on my home that it creates.
Can't steal from your house if there isn't a house left! 🚀🇺🇸
Claymore roomba, patrol the family room.
you can't put a price tag on safety!
@@RAWBOT301 oh yeah I bought some surplus clay more from a dealer it's a MON-50 Russian claymores don't ask me how I got them what do you think where should I place these obliterators
@@joey9511 yeah I might rethink what should I use for home offense
If you live in Washington, I’d think twice before using an AR… no doubt the gun will be taken by LE during an investigation… even if you are clear, it’s not lawful to transfer the AR back to you…. Therefore, your rifle is gone.
All guns that have been used in a shooting will be taken. They are evidence. 🤷
All confiscated evidence MUST be returned back to you if the investigation is over. This is law 101. 🤷
Have you done any videos on the stopping power of filled sandbags? That would be useful.
Any recommendations on what grain 556 bullet for home defense ?
12.5" side charger AR "pistol" with brace.. 20rd P-mag loaded with 70gn varmint loads, or good old 55gn SP's... LPVO 1-4 with Illuminated (and etched) reticle/ centering square... plus a Ruger SR40 by the bed, loaded with 15rds of hollowpoints ;)
Any opinions on frangible ammunition for home defense? Not taking into account armor.
Interesting. I would ‘t have thought of a riffle round that could pierce through armor to be more easilly slowed down by drywall or derailed by a twig.
Mossberg 850 turkey gun with the thumbhole stock n full open breacher choke with 0000 buckshot will cover, clear most rooms
We have a code word if the family hears it they know to lay flat on the floor
I haven’t watched this video yet but I noticed that this AR-15 video is 15 minutes and 15 seconds long. Coincidence? 😁
.308 pushes right through desert brush. Haven't tried it east of the Mississippi, but you must have
Kevlar blackberries!
18" 5.56 for me.
55gr vmax for home defense, technically a varmint round, but over penetration is my biggest concern so a very light, fast, frangible, rapidly expanding projectile is what makes sense to me, and it's still going to have better ballistics than any pistol with less over penetration.
Was considering a suppressed 300 for a while, but slow and heavy rounds are likely to over penetrate
Good morning!
PMC 55gr Hollow point 10in barrel. Stops faster than a 9mm fmj in drywall and ballistic gel block. At 25ft
Pcc is probably the overall best home defense gun
A very thorough discussion. To each his own of course. For me, any rifle is too much in a "something goes bump in the night" scenario. A pistol or at largest a PDW with a Surefire light would be my go-to for situation I hope I'm never in.
What does "too much" mean in this context?

If you have a smaller house/apartment the 12 gauge is still king
Unless it's birdshot, 12g is going through mutiple walls.
Thanks Eric
@@PassivePortfolios I don't disagree. A full-size pistol is perfectly fine too.
More and more the threat is very well armed, so you need the best possible weapon to defend yourself with
Eric how about a short video on your dramatic transformation? Your obviously in great shape now, and look healthy. What was your motivation? Take care
Backstops, Angles, distance, stressor’s, home defense ammo, training and then training under stress…
Shotgun with #4 buck baby!
Have you considered the level 4 plate armor crack head on croc and pcp?
How about frangible 5.56 ammo for home defense?
I've always considered the AR-15 platform to be the best home defense weapon, having 30 rounds (or 10, 20, 40, 60, etc) is a lot better than being stuck with only six to seven shotshells
Will I likely need to fire more than a few shots? No, but, you don't prepare for the best, you prepare for the worst
I hope you have an awesome lawyer for when the worse lawsuit of your life comes to you😊
Opinion on using 75gr Hornady Black Interlock?
It’s devastating
I kept waitin for you to go into frangibles, are they sufficient for apartment dwellers?
5.56 in confined space….yeah… not a fan.
Indoors....an AR. will blow your ear drums out
Are you really pushing SDI? I have not heard a single good thing about it, how do you learn a hands on skill while online?
I had my Swiss K31set up for home defense when I had no other long guns available to me. Crazy? Yeah, but that was the only serious firearm I had at the time, besides hand guns.
Would it be impractical to suggest building a wall of filled sandbags to stop potential stray or defensive projectiles?
Yes!
I can randomly shoot through 75% of my house. Have a hill on 2 sides and 5 miles of big timber on the other. Best part is my bedroom is againt the one wall i cant shoot through.

You are so right. I have particularly careful as i use the AR-15 big brother the AR-10.
7.5 inch ar pistol in 300 blackout with a dead air nomad 30 supressor. Best home defense build
Yes. The problem is that you have neighbors.
And?
Any gun is good for self-defense as long as you know what's behind your target and where that bullet's going even a 50 BMG
Certainly we can, if we try hard enough, come up with something louder so we can lose all ability to hear the enemy.
Eric out here aging like fine wine.
Yes, I use my suppressed AR15 SBR for home defense with 55 grain Hornady BTHP.
Wrong
@@DinoNucci Tell me why.
I live out in the woods alone my hime defense is a 300 wm loaded with steel core
#4 buck with a modified choke works friggin wonders. Test it out and see how it does for you.
Tried this, seems to be a great choice! Patterns very well in my 12's and 20's. Seems to pack a wallop on my homemade targets.
