For removing old paint, a better solution is a heat gun, it is not expensive and lasts longer than a chemical paint remover for the same price, and it can handle more types of paint, it looks like heavy oil paint on old doors,
Be cautious of lead in the paint. Most exterior paints contained high levels of lead, and sometimes even mercury. If you use a sander make sure you use a high quality organic respirator with lead filtration. Best way to test is to draw a metal tool over the paint. If it leaves a dark streak it probably is lead. You can’t ever be to cautious with your health!
Don’t think of it as a fail. I love watching these videos of you guys and this house in the village. It’s great to think of all the generations of people who lived and laughed and raised families in this home and now it’s yours .
You don’t need to remove all of the old paint. It‘s sufficient to remove the loose parts and all the dirt. Sanding would indeed help! Then give it two or more coats of fresh paint and it will be good as new!
Scrape the loose stuff. Coarse sand to blend surfaces. Prime bare wood. Paint use a single edge disposable razor to squeegee paint on glass back to glazing putty. I used to use only acrylic water based paint. Now I’m seemingly going back to oil. Use paint conditioner.
I've found the jell paint removers work the best, 1 coat usually takes off most paint surfaces. 2 coats should remove it down to the wood. Then sand and stain or paint. 😊
Another way of removing paint is to use a heat shrink gun and a scraper. You heat up the paint until it bubbles, then scrape it off. If you are using stripper, It takes a lot of time and many coats to get the paint off. Best to ask at your store what is the most effective stripper. It just takes patience and work.
@@zlauriault My guess would be that it is an oil based paint. The heat gun method works just fine for all paints. With stripper, I found some paint that just defied stripping. I don't know what it was, but it was a hundred years old. Have no idea what they used back then.
It is customary to use 2 band clamps on the end of the hose. Try and find good stainless steel ones with hexagonal heads to tighten. The cheap ones will rust off in a couple of weeks. To strip the doors it is MUCH easier to take them off the hinges and work on saw horses. You need a paint scraper (not a spatula or putty knife) and a power sander (or more than one type) for that job. Just because a job takes more than a day it is not a failure.
"Submersible pump" is the name, and everyone with a well in the USA has one. I have a water well that is 300 meters deep! The hole is just 6" diameter and so the pumps are long and narrow. Just wire brush the door and paint it blue. The rough surface is a good look, much sought after.
I still enjoyed your video and don’t consider it a fail. It’s a process. I think it is so interesting to see the good, the bad, and everything in between to appreciate the finished product. You are doing a great job guys!
Never a failed day guys. It’s all about learning. You’ll get it figured out. When you do get it all sanded down with a powered sander, make sure to use a high quality primer on it before painting again. Also wear good dust masks as well because I’m sure that is lead based paint. Luba is turning into a star. :-) Where Jack?
Your work is amazing, especially when a woman handles tasks like renovation and technical work. It's inspiring and shows that anyone can achieve their goals with effort, regardless of gender.
Your efforts ,and at times struggles, will make you love that place that much more. Not sure how that works exactly, but it does. It'll become your door, you'll know it well
Hi guys, thanks for sharing your project 👍. Just a suggestion regarding of removal of such a thick coat of paint: try to use a heat gun and paint scraper. While heated the pain shuld come off easily with a flat paint scraper or putty knife. And after that you can use sander or sand by hand. Good luck!
I really like watching you guys work on that house. The wood on the door is so old and the grain of the wood is splitting. The word for the machine in English is “sander.” But it still will look blue, but any new paint can hide that blue color. You just can’t use a stain. A good oil based paint will cover it good.😀
Pavo this will change your painting life. "3M 7771 Stripper Brush, 4" Diameter. " It fits in a drill and works much better than drill wire brush or chemicals. It will even remove rust from metal. They don't last very long but each one could do the door and some trim.
Ah now I know why people over here found it easy to greet me in dialect. 'Moi' means in my dialect 'Have a nice day' and we use it a lot, even greeting people that we don't know. In Dutch it would be 'Goedendag', 'Hallo' or 'Hoi', but why make things difficult :) I love what both of you do with this house. I know for sure it's gonna be awesome!

Pavlo, you did not fail. You got a lot of work done. You now know what paint removers don't work. You will succeed next time with stronger paint removers. Luba looks beautiful in her dress. God Bless.
A Caustic Tank is the most commonly used method to strip paint from wood doors and furniture. Many people assume a stripping tank is an acid bath, it is totally the opposite; caustic soda is an alkaline
I have never had luck with paint removers. Always just sand and refinish. It's such a cute house. The blue is unusual with brick, but I really like it.
I have old house, built 1981, to clean the doors is a big job. I used paint stripper and then 2000psi water blaster, cleaned out all the grooves as well. But mind, wear protective clothing, the piant stripper splashes everywhere and can still cause damage on other sirfaces, or burn your skin.
Wear a dust mask, and old cloths because it has lead in the paint. They make a paint remover that you can brush on. It will bubble up the old paint, then you scrape it off. All old paint has lead in it, very hazardus to ones health. It is better to remove the wood and do it in an open covered area so paint dust remains out side not in the house. Out side wood once the paint is removed, coat with Linseed oil let the wood soak it up. You may need to use a rotary sander with 80 grit to remove the layers. Then a vibrating sander with finer grit to smooth out the wood surface. Another way is to sand-blast off the old paint. So use the best dust mask you can get.
Good Video Pavlo & Luba .Keep going guys .Yes a heat gun and an angle grinder with a grinding head or sander will help .Do get more jell paint remover .And wait till it bubbles .Its going to be a big long job .Take care guys .

Don't do more work than necessary. Remove the paint that is loose and leave the paint that is firmly in place. Paint over with new paint. Do not paint with dense acrylate paint (plastic paint), but preferably with some oil paint, preferably linseed oil paint. Those are my tips for you and maybe they will give you something. From my own experience, I recommend a wood burner that will remove all layers of paint, and then you only need a grinder and the wood is like new. Exactly. Old paint contains stuff that is harder to remove, so I would go for powered sander.
You two are such dedicated and hard workers and you still manage to laugh at things and make it fun. Love your videos!!
You did not fail. You learnt that somethings don't work. That is success. The best of luck to you both and your families.

Do not give up. Gel removers work best for paint removal. Pavlo you can also use sandpaper to get the surface smooth. Keep up the good work. 😃
I love watching you both fix up this home
This is not a fail day, you two are making a lot of progress, that will be a nice place to live when you are done
I love thrift shopping, too, and love Luba's dress! When you get an electric sander it will help. Thanks for sharing!

Try using a heat gun to strip the paint and sander/sand paper to sand the excess, a good quality primer and paint.
A Caustic Tank is the most commonly used method to strip paint from wood doors and furniture.
Many people assume a stripping tank is an acid bath, it is totally the opposite; caustic soda is an alkaline
You need to go to a place that sells paint there and ask them what kind of paint stripper you need to get older paint off of the wood.
Please be careful. That paint very likely contains lead. Love the channel.
I have never had luck with paint removers. Always just sand and refinish. It's such a cute house. The blue is unusual with brick, but I really like it.
Definitely not a fail day! You got the water pump working!
I liked the old door patina & colors! A heat gun would probably work to remove the paint, heat & scrape.
Been there, done that. Not so easy. Not a fail, but more experience gained. Thank you both for making the videos you do.
Removing that many layers of paint just plain sucks! I say new doors! You two have a wonderful work ethic. Keep at it your house will be beautiful.

in this case only sanding with a electrical sander will remove the old paint. First use sanding paper with grid 60 or 80 and then 120 , 180 and 250.

You can use a sandblaster as well. Would be easier on the Valance too. Just be careful around the windows 😮😊

Palvo next time you use paint remover spray in small area at a time 2 foot square ⬛ or 0.186 square meters area it will work.

You need a carbide scraper for that paint. Or maybe a sand blaster.
It won’t always be like this Pavlo, one day all your hard work will pay off!
You need an paint scraper with blade, and an orbital sander with different grit sandpaper.
that was fun. It is a nice house. Good luck. I will check in later to see the progress 🧐
Hi,
Try (brown) solid soft soap - can be used by everyone, and the method is cheap and effective. It must be scooped up with a spoon. Smear the wood in brown soap and cover with cling film. The soap will slowly but surely first soften the paint and then loosen it.
Let the mixture sit for a few days and then remove it with a putty knife. Brown soap works more slowly than the harsher chemical paint removers on the market, but it is kinder to the environment.
After treatment, wash with water added with acetic acid (2 l water to ¼ l acetic acid) to neutralize the process. Let the wood dry before working on it.
All the best - SLAVA UKRAINI :)
Hard work but worth it. Keep up the good work.
I would have kept the old paint, just brushed off the loose paint and then put on clear coat and you still have the old nice look🙂
Bonjour les amis. Pour un rendement efficace pour décaper utilisez un "heat gun". Vous pouvez aussi décaper avec un mélange d'eau chaude et de la soude caustique.

Maybe see if you could rent a pressure washer of some sort to strip the paint off. I use one to strip stain off my shingles of my house, might work for that old paint.
Another great vid! Be safe!
It is never a fail when you learn something 😊
Well the two effective ways to take paint off is to sand blast it off, which creates other issues if done incorrectly. Plus needs special equipment. It's obvious the base coat is strong and adheres really well to the wood so keep it, just "fix" it where it's rough.
That's my 2 cents, or rivnah's.
You didn’t fail , you just learned what does not work. So you move on to other ways until you find what works. That’s a life lesson.
That wire cup you used with your battery drill is very efective for removing the paint, its just meant to be used with angle grinder not with a drill. Drill is to slow.

No need to strip the old paint off. Just scrape the peeling parts then sand the rest and wipe it down well. Afterwards prime and paint 2 coats. It will hide the uneven spots very well and will be fresh and beautiful.
They were not wanting to paint it. Maybe the plan was to stain it I guess. I didn't hear them say except that they didn't want to paint.
@@zlauriaultoh. At 7:44 Luba said they've never repainted before.

Better still get a specialist to dispose of them if you can. Stay safe - it is much worse than paint dust>
That is tough work. We love your videos.
It’s not a failed day, it’s a trial day. Every day moves you forward
You could remove the paint with a sandblaster and then after the paint is removed, use a sander to get a smooth finish on the wood.
A paint scraper with carbide steel inserts is very effective at removing old paint. Warner, and Purdy are two major brands.
Hey Pavlo Try a heatgun if you can find one they work excellent heat and scrape

It's a waste of time and money, with solvents you'll be tired before you find the right one. Good luck. Opalarka elektryczna do drewna Hot 2200
