  • In this powerful TEDx talk, Vanessa shares her personal journey as a survivor of the Family policing system also known as the child removal / welfare system, and how it led her to become a human rights lawyer and advocate for change.
As a survivor, Vanessa witnessed first hand the flaws and injustices within the child removal system. This experience ignited a passion within her to challenge the very notion of the state as a parent. Vanessa sheds light on the inherent limitations of the state's role as a parent, and why it is crucial for us to take responsibility and work collaboratively to support families in need.
Vanessa seeks to challenge the status quo and embark on a journey towards a society where community support and collaboration take precedence over a flawed and impersonal state system. She believes that, together, we can create a future where every child thrives and families are empowered to flourish. A proud Bundjalung Widubul-Wiabul Woman, lawyer and advocate for Human Rights, Vanessa took out the Australian Human Rights medal awarded by the Australian Human rights commission which her acceptance speech saw global recognition and responses. Vanessa is a 2023 Fulbright scholar where she is building international and national relationships in the field of human rights, and is a recognised speaker and media commentator globally and domestically here in Australia. Vanessa is also completing her PhD at the University of Technology where her research is centred around decolonising child protection in the lives of First Nations people and is currently writing her first book titled “ Long Yarn Short: We are still here”. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I grew up in the system taken from my family as a baby. And I know full well that the system is not kind on any child no matter the background and heritage. I still believe to this day as a woman in her late 40’s that most of the time being in the system is worse than being with our families. And once you are in care the system doesn’t listen to you anymore. It’s like we are punished for the sins of the past even though we had done nothing wrong except being born to parents who needed help and support and where there was none to be given. I am not a First Nations child but I am Australian and I believe that the system needs to change to support children and their families and not punish us because our lives may be difficult.

Powerful words from a strong woman. Unless you've ever been in this situation or you work directly with these youths and families, you'll never know what it's like to go through this.

I am so glad that i'm not the only one who believes that the system needs to change it causes more damage than it does good. This is happening in Canada, too. We need to make a change to have a positive future for our children!

We need to strengthen the welfare state, not weaken. Conservatives have been tearing away at the social safety net for decades that’s why it has failed.

At the core of this message is the fact that our system has become too complex and removed from communities. This is a very important message to share with people that no one‘s coming to the rescue and that we’re living in a time of transition. We need to remember that we need to be actively creating, and co-creating our communities if we are to move from this terrible timethat we find ourselves into something better please share this message with people. Thank you for the work.

01:04 🚸 First Nations' children are profoundly impacted by the child removal system, facing disproportionate removal rates, often justified under neglect, poverty, or mental health issues.
03:30 🤔 The concept of the state acting as a parent to children in care makes no sense; it's crucial to reconsider the current system's approach.
05:19 ⚠ Children subject to family policing end up in various unsupportive settings, from inadequate care facilities to incarceration, reflecting systemic failures.
06:16 🚫 Advocacy calls for the abolition, not reform, of family policing, drawing parallels to the anti-slavery movement's approach to systemic change.
08:39 💡 Communities hold solutions; structural changes redirecting resources from child removal to community support and engagement are pivotal for change.
10:33 🏠 Reimagining the system involves structural changes where communities are empowered with direct support, housing, and alternatives to child removal.
12:25 👥 Shared responsibility is vital: community members can offer practical support without over-pathologizing issues, fostering a more supportive environment.
13:53 💔 Personal tragedy fueled a deep understanding of systemic failures, emphasizing the importance of responsive, humane community engagement over institutionalized care.

Stolen genaration is a completely different story and a very sad one indeed. Working as a child and family health nurse in NSW I can say it takes multiple ROSH reports from different sources for DCJ to even consider removing the child. They will and other NGOs will try to support the family first. Sadly, we do see many children (not just the first nations child) are at significant risk living with their own family and it is clearly impacting on their development and health. Its a very hard one😢

DCJ spend barely anything on fanilies or supporting families and majority of the funding goes towards out of home care and intervention. Indigenous children are removed at a higher rate now than what occurred during the stolen generation, its not a different story. Its worse now than ever. NGO's (I work for one) do not have the funding and resources to support these families, especially when working in a system that removes indigenous children at a rate 10x higher than white children Listen to her words as they come from lived experience, instead of justifying a system that has 20,000+ indigenous children living away from their family.

3:30 "This idea that the state can be your parent, makes absolutely no sense... This idea that a minister remains the caretaker of a child, makes no sense...". She's absolutely correct here. That's why she absolutely shouldn't be repeating that govt slogan "your children are our children"!! Community solutions start with family solutions. Community solutions will come back naturally, when govt "solutions" are abolished.

Indeed she is... And she even contradicted herself. First she says she wants to abolish, rather than reform, the whole idea of govt control, and explained how they keep changing the name of the departments in very insideous ways to appear benevolent... (She's absolutely correct here). Then offers a way to "restructure" the department, which is no different that "reforming".... (She's absolutely wrong here). No, abolish the dept altogether, humans haven't needed these govt departments for thousands of years and it wasn't until they were created that we've had these issues.

@@NCC-1701D Have you ever walked in her shoes? Can you stand up and make an informed presentation like her? I think not. You just want to pick it apart because you don't happen to agree with her. Typical male. Why don't we shut it down now.

    • @NCC-1701D
      @NCC-1701D 5 месяцев назад

Lol you're just so bent on groveling at her shoes that you don't even see that I support her general premise, (that the state cannot be a parent), but that her solutions play right back into the hands of the people who have been trying to make the state the parent. Use some critical thinking and don't just assume because someone has suffered that they somehow have the solution to end all suffering. She had the right idea when she said abolish that system, then she backtracked and offered a way to "restructure" things... Which ultimately is no different than saying they've had legitimate power to exist all along and at least SOME authority over your kids. Youre so prejudiced against guys that you can't even do your own critical thinking. You're a sycophant for her and will just parrot anything she says as gospel with no extra thought to consider if what she's proposing would truly solve the problem she's presenting, kick the can down the road, or make things worse. Its people that don't use their own brain and just go along with one cause or movement after another, because it "feels" right that fuel the rapid decline in our civilization and the rapid consolidation of power that is happening. Easily manipulated.
