Why do two straight lines always diverge in the saddle one? Do you mean when going to infinity only? It looks like if they are moving towards the center they would approach but not converge.
Yes, it could be over a long amount of time. And you are right-instead of saying two lines, I should have said something like two paths that start out parallel to one another will eventually curve away from each other (the stronger the curvature, the more they will diverge).
