Try arriving between 5am and 7am when you have several A380s 777s A350s and 787s all arriving at the same time. Its chaos with extremely long queues and broken E gates.
I haven't used this terminal for a few years, so it is a bit different now. I found that buying something like a packet of biscuits at the departure airport, then declaring it as "food" on your arrivals card got me directed direct to quarantine inspection. I showed them the biscuits which are usually admissible, and I was free to go.
The recommended arrival time is mid morning or late evening. As you will avoid peak hour traffic outside of the airport. Sydney has a very capable & comprehensive public transport system. A direct rail link to the city 10 minutes. Or rideshare, bus, taxi.
So… kiosk, baggage, customs. Seems simple enough. I’ll be there in March and I’ll need to catch a connecting flight to Melbourne so I’ll need to go through domestic transfer and check my bags again, go through security and get to my gate.
I don't know what their rules about taking photos are, but many airports didn't allow it airside of the border control. Even back before 9/11, I created some sort of "major event" when I tried to take a pic of a "Welcome to LA" sign as I walked in from the plane. I noticed some close up pics in the video of people's faces which may be considered a breach of privacy.
customs is different from passport control. Smart gate automates the ‘checking if you match your passport’ part. Australian customs is very strict about bio security and that part can’t be automated.
Just being in the same country that Kylie Minogue is from is well worth all the hassle, as being Irish (Republic of Ireland), I’m a huge Kylie fan - aside from the Sydney gay scene, there is also Melbourne, where the goddess Kylie grew up, so that would be a pilgrimage 😍😍😍😍
The two stage passport system is simply dopey, and the layout with machines at various locations along narrow corridors is not fit for purpose. For a start the duty free shop should go. I never thought I would say this but my most recent experience at LHR was streets ahead of SYD.
Smooth wouldn’t be a word to describe arriving in Sydney. Nightmare - yes. Smooth - definitely not. And that’s before you encounter the national embarrassment that is Border Force. The Passport Control machines are also prone to breakdown, and if you’re unlucky enough to cop a broken machine, you WILL be abused by Border Force staff for this.

Was there in August, process was very smooth with arrivals and departures.

Well my parents and I will be going there next month for overseas to meet up my brother
Any nationality with a biometric symbol on the cover of their passports can use the smart gate.
What is the point of the smart gate, if you have to fill out a form and go to a customs agent anyway at the end?
customs is different from passport control. Smart gate automates the ‘checking if you match your passport’ part. Australian customs is very strict about bio security and that part can’t be automated.
Smart gate is about your identity; customs is about whether you carry anything illegal or untaxed

Brisbane is always fast
when did they start smartgate?
if EU people can use smartgate so should british people.
UK citizens can use smart gate .
i used one back in 2011 kinda creepy reminded me of Total Recall
Sydney international arrivals is a national disgrace and embarrassment.
I have always found it easy and efficient and often better than airports in other countries.

They are building a new one
