- After nearly 10 years of complaints and with a global pandemic, fighting games finally are featuring rollback netcode. With such a massive leap in fighting game development, lets take a second to realize just exactly how we got here.

Rollback AND Crossplay. Those should be standard features and I'm glad fighting games are going this way
100% agree!
The communities are already small so having the possibility to play with as much people as possible is important
10:08 Correction , there actually was a business reason for this : it Arc System Works a massive boost in terms of player goodwill and bassically made them the favorite fighting game developer
I had no idea how small this channel was, this video was great and entertaining !
Glad you enjoyed!
Worth noting that BlazBlue's rollback was born from a similar fan effort as +R's, but everything else was AFAIK ArcSys in-house
it is not mentioned often likely because most people have not even touched street fighter x tekken let alone it's online but sfxt is actually capcom's first official implementation of rollback; it kind of blew ass and was difficult to distinguish from delay based netcode for that reason
it is also worth mentioning that most well made implementations of rollback netcode actually implement delay netcode anyway to a small degree to dampen the impact of rollback's apparent jitteriness, but is generally accepted and not noticed because it is constant rather than variable as it was previously, with rollback being what is actually now variable. i figure most people dont mention it because it's more technical and i guess people dont like that but i figured id mention it anyway
All that left is to add wifi indicator, i know its a harder than making a netcode but sometimes you gota do the hard working.
Hey! Good video, got me with the Granblue thumbnail haha.
I hope not to sound too rude or be "that dude", but a couple points I can make to add to your video: Japan has been ignoring rollback request because it's not an issue for them. Internet speeds are crazy good in Japan, and the amount of distance you need to cover to play with someone else is laughable compared to the US. Rollback was born as a product of a country with slower internet and much, much wider country to cover. This is now speculation, but Granblue having such an unlucky launch probably showed them how a perduring playerbase could benefit them.
The other thing I want to add is to point out Harada's phrasing. I don't know if you follow him much, but Tekken 7 once claimed to have Rollback, and while it improved the netcode, it magically didn't solve the problems Tekken online had, being a weird mix between the two netcodes. If you go to his Harada's bar channel, there are a couple of videos with Virtua Fighter's producer (Iirc) and a player or commentator, in which Harada tried to explain how the team tried to improve the netcode, basically explaining that you have so many animations and options in a 3D game that it was nigh impossible to predict what can happen in a match that quickly for full rollback to function properly. I suggest you give it a watch, because that's my take. It was difficult to make sense of the thing.
Still, hope you keep up!
Getting you with the thumbnail is what i like to hear! And everything you stated is 100% true, but even if tekken "technically" has rollback, its not very *good* rollback. But with Bamco working with Arika, who from what i know does have good rollback, the odds to Tekken 8 having good rollback is pretty high. Glad you enjoyed the video
Wonderful editing! Cheers to you, lad!
Glad you enjoyed it!
you made me check if it already came out lmao. subbed! great work, you have such a library I can't wait to go through it!
I watch so much fgc stuff on here, glad to find ya.
Thanks for the sub!
An awesome new find! Proud to be sub 465! You make good stuff and my new years resolution was to push all smaller creators and get this fgc community booming this year, so proud to add you to the list, man! Keep up the great work! It's our new golden age!!! LET'S F'KIN GOOOOOO!!!!!
Thank you so much! One of the kindest comments I've ever received! LFG!!!
@@Meta_Break You deserve it, man! You keep going, I'll keep coming back. That's a promise! I checked out the Splatoon videos just for you and I don't even own a Switch! 😂 But for real though, I can't wait for this era! We're getting the support and love for these games we've always needed. I'm an OldTaku arcadethrowback lurker type entity so I was around in the days when a roster update meant buy new game. Actually with DLC IDK if it's better or worse now. 🤷🏿♂️ But so glad that at least we're getting to finally experience the feel of those arcade matches with rollback. To anyone that want around during that era, explaining how bad the online matches would feel is hard unless you have a game to demonstrate on, SC6 is one of the few in the current generation.
Rollback getting popular was the best outcome of COVID
Smash Melee does have rollback and integrated online matchmaking via the Slippi emulator. The update came out in June 2020 and took 1 guy 9 months of full time work to implement(with the upside of melee already having decoupled rending and game state information) I know ultimate also has a fan project to add rollback but I heard it was in the works almost 2 Years ago and have heard nothing sense
Yes, smash does have rollback with Slippi, which is amazing, but the dream is for it to be officially made by Bandai Namco/Nintendo.
@@Meta_Break the only way we get it is new game which won't happen until new Nintendo system. And even then smash fans are worried because Sakurai has effectively retired from development roles
I'm a fan of this.
Now, what’s left is crossplay. Great video btw!
Yes! Thank you!
HOW DOES THIS CHANNEL HAVE THIS LITTLE SUBSCRIBERS?!?!??! I genuinely thought you had thousands???!?
Intro to ASW with Strive transition was 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you very much!
arc sys didn't put rollback in old games for nothing. Adding rollback gets people to buy the game
THE ROLLBACK!!! THE ROLLBACK IS REAL!!!!
I discovered the joy of fighting games during covid when my friend gameshared dragonball fighterz with me, now I stay awake at night shadow labbing combos in my mind while trying to sleep
You have less than 500 subs?! This video is worth atlas 5985 subs man! Great job!
Glad you think so!
The guitar bit is from Core-A Gaming
Correct
when you take core-a’s analogy word for word you at least need to give him credit
You know what. I was gonna put the links in the description, but I totally forgot. Thank you for reminding me.
Great video my guy!!!!!!!!
Great video, very informative and fun!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hundreds of thousands.
After years of delay based net code we can finally PLAY the game. Let's go Samurai Sh---- oh, it's dead.
A "Dead game" doesnt mean you cant play it online and hav a good time.
@@Meta_Break Unfortunately that's exactly what it means. I can't find anyone.
That's where discords come in. If the online matchmakimg doesn't have players, thats usually because most of the community moved to discord servers. A quick google searched and you can find a server full of players.
this is a reach but i truly think if these developers put work in their fighting games as they are doing it now
even if this should be standard years ago, we might just see a new rise of players in the fgc community and i mean that like a surge amount
My problem with this video is that you left out the fact that SFV and Tekken 7 (games that predate Strive by more than half a decade) both tried to implement early versions of rollback netcode.
So the narrative that you paint from 5:30 to 7 is actually false. You touched on it at 8:30 but I feel like it'd be more accurate to say "Capcom and Bandai didn't prioritize quality netcode the way they should've" rather than "Capcom and Bandai chose not to implement rollback netcode at all because it wasnt that important to them". All rollback netcode is not the same.
They both had rollback since 2015/16
GGPO came out in 2010 with a final release in 2015. It should also be noted that Tekken and SFV implemented "rollback" netcode, but it wasn't very functional.
Capcom and Bandai Namco both decided a cheap license was beneath them and believed they could create their own system. They failed pretty hard. It wasn't until GGPO went open source that the developers of major IPs got their netcode right...I wonder why?
True, but the story was that they didnt put high priority on good rollback for so long, but they do now.
So true that not all rollback is the same, T7 ‘rollback’ essentially doesn’t exist compared to Strive it feels completely delay based
Im here to collect the royalties for this clip ruclips.net/video/VKCuZ9j_20E/видео.html
:D :D :D
on more serious note, good video :), thank god that rollback is finally coming the standard for fighting games.
We have suffered long enough.
Rip the console Blazblue fans 😭😭😭😭
Ps4 has rollback, right?
7:54 Might be coincidence but have I found another radical soda enjoyer?
Maybe
@@Meta_Break lol
So.. Bandai, can we get rollback for Jojo ASB-R? pls
That would be amazing!
Smash has rollback. Just not Ultimate because Nintendo can't do what Fizzy did in a CAVE with a box of SCRAPS!
That's the dream, tho!
under rated vid
Good vidoe. nicely done.
Thank you very much!
Smash is a lost cause, really the last dream game that needs to get the rollback treatment is under Night In-Birth!
I'm still holding out for Smash Ultimate Definitive Edition or something. Huffing that Copium like its my day job!
rollback 4 uniclr...
Hopefully soon...
It is just not true that there is no incentive to update old games to rollback. They can continue to sell those games forever now.
YOU FORGOT MVCI IT HAS GREAT FUCKING ROLLBACK-
That's right, but with everything that happened with mvci and how it was abandoned by capcom, I forgot to mention it. Plus strive was the game to really put focus on it in the community.
@@Meta_Break fair, everyone forgets MvCi :(
I liked that you mentioned ultimate but melee already had very solid rollback netcode via slippi
True, but the dream is for smash to have rollback officially
That isn’t the developers melee depends on players
Bruuh tekken 7 has rollback.
I want you to look me in the eye and tell me Tekken 7s rollback is good
